Several months ago, I heard from a distant relation on my father's side of the family tree who had information about my grandfather's grandmother. I had known that Edwin Prentice had married Ellen Hooker and had 2 sons in the early 1870s, but that was all I knew for certain. Family speculation said that Ellen had died young, and that Edwin took the 2 boys out west. At least one of the boys returned to New York, but Edwin supposedly remarried and only came out to visit once, when he was an old man.

Anyways, like I was saying, this new contact had information about Ellen Hooker. In fact, she had photos, pages from the family bible documenting births, deaths, and marriages, and a lot of work on this side of the family tree. The slide show of images had me crying, to see images of my great-grandfather as a small boy, and my great-great- grandfather as a young man. It also revealed that Edwin and Ellen had had a third child... Jerusha Brill (or Belle, depending on the census) Prentice. Apparently, she was a toddler when her mother died, and was left with her maternal grandparents.

That's my latest!

The main family I was researching, CLARK went dry a few years ago. I made great progress through census and birth/death indeces on other branches. Then last week tried a different approach on "James Monroe" found Mannrow born in MO at right time and other names finally matched. I just don't know how I overlooked this years ago. I guess sometimes you mjust need to go on other branches and come back with a fresh frame of mind.

My latest good break came when ancestry.com posted the South Carolina death certificate images online. I was able to locate several "lost" female relatives as well as had break throughs on several maiden names. emoticon

I had no new info. in over three years when some one found my tree on ancestry.com last year and contacted me.They were looking for closest living relative to my husbands grandmothers brother(John Floyd HART). They were able to clear up some hear say info I had on John's children. We helped each other out, I now have email contact with the missing relation.

I have found it very hard to find translations when I can't figure out the writing. I think I have to find out what they usually say on those French Canadian records.

My good break happened quite a few years ago when I was going back over a marriage certificate that was written in French. I hadn't caught it the first time but on this reading I noticed that the father of the groom was deceased! Knowing this I found the son living with his step-mother who was labeled as a widow in the year before the marriage certificate! The other good break was having a contact who was able to confirm from a noted historian/genealogist on Acadian genealogy that the connection I made was indeed as correct as possible since birth records no longer exist for the tiem period when the groom was born.

Definitely take a second look if you are learning to translate yourself. You never know what you might have missed!

New here but we had a nice little breakthrough within the last month. My g-g-grandfather wrote out a little bio of his grandfather, Hans, that included info about a fight over a gunpowder patent with a DuPont. Said he escaped from jail, disguised himself as a woman and got on board a ship bound for America. We could never find info to prove any of that. Well, I googled his name recently and something popped up. Apparently, there really was a court case with DuPont but it was here in the states. We are still analyzing the info but it does prove a few thing. My mom started doing our genealogy when I was a month old (I'm 40) and we still find little tidbits. Don't give up!

I finally found my grandfathers birthplace, parents and brothers name. Now if I can find age 10 to age 38 I would have cracked the mystery!

Often when I'm searching for Census records, if I am unable to find the male head of household I will search on the female.

My most recent BIG "bingo" was finding my great uncle's first wife. In a short time I went from 1890 back to 1529, in England.

tHE SITE i FOUND. tHEY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON FOR 30 YEARS. THE GENTLEMAN IS A RETIRED sCIENTIST.SORRY Now that is better. The family line is now going for the world Guiness Book Recrd for the most relatives. They are registered. As I go along I check different families out. When I find an interesting story I print it and Add it to my book. The chart he gave me is the pedigree. He asked me which way I wanted it but being a computor dummy I didn't really know so I told him the easiest. I just started doing this before Xmas. So I am green. When I first started my Tree search I just wanted to find out about my great grandmother. Now the earliest date in my tree is 758. The history I have uncovered is so fantastic that it leaves me speechless.

Be creful taking others' research though. Be sure to have documentation. I have found things posted that have not checked out for my family.

I've only gone back to the 1800s so far.

yeah it might take a while but it will be worth it. I finally after about 4 years got to the bottom of what my family didn't know. I now have all the way to 1456 in my family genealogy. Just hang in there and you will get through it.

What's the latest breakthrough you have had in your genealogy quest? I haven't had one for awhile and am somewhat at a standstill. But I know this is a slow process.
