When family was young and still at home , I was "Supermom", so everthing was from scratch especially bread because I stored my own whole wheat kernals and ground my flour.

Today my grandchildren and great grandchildren do not even know the terms "scratch vs. store bought" they say" what do you mean, store bought? isn't everythig?"
It's a different world and changing faster than this old gal can keep up with! emoticon

I mostly cheat and use a mix, but I definitely think that scratch is the way to go.

Always from scratch! Then I know if I want something bad enough to pull out all of the ingredients, it's a craving worth satisfying. If I don't really feel like getting everything out, then I know it's not something I really want or need. When I used to keep mixes around, I would make sweets all the time!

I feel the same as Jenae. Last year my roommate and I were making cakes from boxes regularly. I was teaching here how to bake as she's not from Canada. Unfortunately the constant cake eating was part of the reason i put on over 40 lb. So we don't make cake anymore. It's a shame. I love baking. I am also able to bake from scratch. I just can't because I'm not active enough to burn the calories. So no cake for me!!

Sweet things and good breads were always calling my name.
They, unfortunately, kept me hostage in a morbidly obese body for many years.
They are like drugs to me.
I just can't be satisfied with just one piece.
I simply MUST stay away from them.
That means no more baking of cookies, pastries, cakes and breads.
Since I have been concentrating on creating a healthy lifestyle the desire to gorge on these things is under control.
One job I will never be able to do is work in a bakery.
Actually, the trade off is worth the 'sacrifice'.

Both, often together. I don't bake as often as I did, but still like something for special occasions, gift giving and hospitality. It is possible to make delicious low fat, low sugar treats.

I rarely make/bake cakes anymore. In the past, I would make them from scratch which I enjoyed. Now, for that occasional Birthday, I will use a mix or buy something from the bakery. emoticon

Sometimes I will use stock in a box but prefer to make my own and freeze it.
To save room in my small freezer is cook it down to concentrate it and freeze in ice cube trays.
I do use some convenience mixes like Swiss Miss 25 calorie hot cocoa mix.
Really satisfies my sweet tooth.

Do you make cakes from a MIX or from SCRATCH?

I make most cakes from a mix but I make my chocolate cakes from scratch. I also have a fruit cocktail cake that I make from scratch.
