Members should be aware that we cannot do a search and be assured that your results absolutely exclude member input as a possibility.

It's in the 'fine print' on clickable words in the tracking options you can select:

"....If you run a search and we find no results in our main database, we will automatically search shared foods for you."

mrs_avery, there is an option on the food tracker to not get the "fast food" info or "submitted by other members" info. so, if you have those checked, you should get a more limited result. the other posters are right too. i personally LOVE the new food tracker and hope they do the same thing to the fitness tracker.

Many times I just get the info off the label such as skinless chicken breast from Aldi. I open add foods not listed and enter, then save to my personal foods. When I grill I add that to my tracker, as well as oil or pam spray that I use besides other ingredients that I use such as lemon pepper, etc. I do this even if I find a food listed, because many times it will show 1 serving. Well what's a serving, ounces, tablespoon, medium, large, etc? I want to know exactly what the serving size is, not a generic word like serving! Doing this has eased my frustration with it.

I manually enter in my foods because I've found a lot of errors with member inputs. I don't want to think I'm eating less than I really am.

No longer relying on SP's tracker. Too time-consuming and frustrating to sift through all its inaccuracies. The food tracker and I got along pretty well until member inputs were added. I was tracking in detail, but member inputs were/are often incomplete or totally inaccurate (yup, I sat here comparing labels to the nutritional facts.)

If we have private favorites, fine. But only SP inputs or approved inputs should be brought up when we search an item. In my case, I eat few manufactured 'products' and still ran into multiple and total dissimilar postings for items. Because of the inaccurate inputs, I think that it's easier to track on paper using a plain calorie book and/or box labels. If I'm tracking, I insist on accuracy.

On the whole, I like it. Sure it doesn't have everything, but you can very something really close, or enter it manually one time & next time you need it, it's there!

I sometimes get frustrated with it.

But even if I have to resort to just writing what I ate in the Nutrition Notes on the Tracker page, it helps me stay honest and keep on track.

I'm lousy with the paper and pen method of food tracking.

A women is often measured by the things she cannot control.
She is measured by the way her body curves or doesn't curve, by where she is flat or straight or round.
She is measured by 36-24-36 and inches and ages and numbers, by all the outside things that don't ever add up to who she is on the inside.
And so if a women is to be measured, let her be measured by the things she can control;
by who she is and who she is trying to become.
Because as every women knows, measurement

Yes, I too have gotten sick of the food tracker and returned to just writing it down in a paper notebook. It is much faster but I use the tracker to find out calories for certain things. I guess I am not the most patient person. The grilled chicken is such a good example In the end one has to enter the right amount of chicken and the sc. used on it. But say that there is no sc. Why is there no listing for chicken-grilled, chicken-roasted, etc. Oh well I will go back to using it after I get done with the lawn for this summer. I still love Spark but the old and new version of the tracker have been my secret bugaboo for a long time. I just use the fast version on the spark page for exercise, food and water and am happy with a paper journal.

I'm surprised that so many people are less than enchanted with the new tracker upgrades - I am a devotee of the new system. I find it saves me a lot of time, but maybe I was just unnecessarily slow before!
emoticon
However, I tend to take advantage of all of the options and to use specific keywords that will get me what I want (i.e. search all words in a combination entry, exclude fast food etc.) and I save any foods I eat more than once in a blue moon to my favourites. I love how I can search within my favourites now (and that there's an autoprompt function) as opposed to having to scroll all the way down under the old system.

I do agree with MISOTU though - I wish there was better integration with SparkRecipes, and that you could copy and modify an existing SparkRecipe with your own tweaks (like using 1% cottage cheese instead of fat free) without having to re-enter every single ingredient. Does anyone know if there's a "suggestion box" for spark tools? It seems like this would be a change that would benefit everyone.

I know what you are saying. It took me forever to get correct info on the NY Strip Steak, as I had to take a restaurant version for a long time. When it finally came up just plain and homemade, it had about 1/2 the calories!
So anyway, my other frustrations are disappearing as I learn to use this new version. I wish when I removed a food from the tracker, the screen would not return to the beginning so I have to start all over again and stuff like that. I have a huge list of favorites and I use the groupings a lot for sandwiches, salads, etc. so I save on typing and clicking.

BTW the tracker is great!.....if you cant find a specific food try entering that food in the recipe calculator....it is just a recipe with 1 item...... emoticon never know, it couldn't hurt emoticon this work for generic items good.

Also when in the food tracker under search the item description you are looking for ...if you check the boxes under of any words and a-z sort it makes it easier to find what you are looking for..default is exactly all words...and the any words brings back more descriptions to choose and alphabetical order to scroll emoticon emoticon many name brand items can be found on the web...with nutrition info search the brand name or company..make sure any thing you have to look up save to your favorites ...easier to find again

I like it .. you can also manually enter in food that you eat all the time, saves time. if it is something you cook that is not on SP data base, google it and manually enter into list. I have a whole bunch of my creations or regularly eaten food on the list. At first it is time consuming, as you have to manually enter all the info, now it is a breeze !

I love the food tracker. For me it is the best tool Spark offers. It has really opened my eyes to what I think and what is actually there. I'm with Azure-Sky, I just use the chicken no skin and add the other stufff depending on how it is cooked. You do have to be careful when you use foods entered by others. They do tend not to add all the nutrition facts.

Yes, I agree with FLA-1956. Suddenly the nutrient amounts that were "minimum for good health" increase and this really doesn't feel right!

If I used a journal, I could record calories quite easily. But I think it would be harder to check whether I was eating sensible amounts of carbs/fat/protein/fibre. Do people use the daily report much? I always check it towards the end of the day and I use it to choose what I'll have for my last snack in the evening.

The only thing that truly bugs me about the food tracker is the nutritional counter. If my weight changes, so do the nutritional values. I prefer for them to stay the same unless I change them since I'm trying to stay within a set value for calories, protein, carbs, and fat. Every few days I'm having to redo the nutritional values. emoticon

I like the new tracker. I have saved so much to my favorites that I can click on multiple foods for different meals at one time and with one click add them all to my tracker for the day. If you use all the features, add hard to find foods, groupings, favorites, etc.. there really isn't anything better out there!

I'm quite new to Spark and this is the only food tracker I've ever used so I have nothing to compare it with. After the first few weeks, I quickly realised that most of the user-entered database entries really can't be relied on. I cross-checked entries against labels and found that even basics like calorie count were often way out! So for any food I think I'll be eating fairly regularly I take the time to make my own entries and add to favourites. As my list of favourites grows, my tracking is faster and faster.

I think there are things that could be improved a bit - the integration of the food tracker and "my recipes" is not awfully good, for example and I had to stop using cook books as it's just way too complicated to get those meals into the tracker. I'd like to be able to take a Spark recipe and edit a personal copy to reflect changes I've made - at the moment I seem to have to enter the whole thing again from scratch which is a shame. Same thing for foods in the database, I'd like to edit a personal copy because often they just need a tweak.

On the whole, though, I really like the tracker. It's pretty easy to use, it makes me stick to my weight loss range and it shows me whether what I'm eating is balanced between the important nutrient groups. All for free! Very happy with that emoticon

I really don't like the nutrition tracker since they made the "upgrades". It now takes me longer to add my foods than it did before.

I believe there is a check box to not show fast foods which should help limit what it shows you.

I spent a lot of time at the beginning manually entering the nutritional values for everything I ate so now most everything is in my list. I rarely use the SP / member added list because it was too hard to find what I was looking for.

You can filter out fast foods. Spark people food tracker is better than a lot out there. Take time to enter your own recipes into a personal cookbook, especially if you are like me and tend to tweak things for personal and family preferences. Nothings perfect.

There are times when I choose the best available option for what I ate. Other times, I will take the nutrition information off the package or look it up online and enter that. I'm much more likely to enter accurate information if I plan to eat the food again.

I consider the food tracker a guideline, but not 100% accurate in tracking my nutrition.

I like the nutrition tracker. I'm in Australia and most of what I track I've added to my favourites so its quite easy for me, I just tick in the box and click add.

I love the food tracker, especially as it's been upgraded and improved over the past few years. The fact that I can access entries made by others speeds up my own tracking and I often use the web search facility to look out the more unusual foods I sometimes enter...

Only frustration is with myself for repeatedly losing the same pounds emoticon

I've tried numerous other online food trackers, and IMHO, SP is the best. It has the largest and most comprehensive food database I've found.

The secret to searching a food is to be specific. "Grilled chicken" is ambiguous, because it could be a breast, leg, thigh, neck, wing. Since grilling doesn't add any calories to the chicken, the fact that it's grilled is irrelevant. What is relevant is the chicken part and the weight. So, type in chicken breast - after you type the word chicken, a list appears and you can select the option you want. Make the food a favorite, then instead of searching the whole database, you only have to scroll down the list of favorite foods to find it.

If you were having fried chicken, that's another story - but you would still have to identify the chicken part you ate. So, if you have chicken breast, that's what you type in the search bar. Even if I'm having something like breaded chicken, I'll search for chicken breast, then search for the breadcrumbs, the oil, etc. and make it a grouping. Then, make that grouping a favorite.

If the food isn't in the database, and you have the nutrition label, add it as a new food. I prefer to do that, rather than depend on foods other members have added, because I've found that some members don't put in all the nutrion info. Sometimes they only put in calories, or leave out sodium or fiber.

if you click on the search foods from other members, sometimes you may find what you are looking for.

Make sure your tracker is set on the setting that SP offers, and not on the setting that allows for food entered by other people.

Do you have food tracker frustrations? Tell us about it.

I have had it with the food tracker. Is there some kind of teaching tool that I can read on how to use it? I'm so annoyed at it!

Simple things like finding grilled chicken is so hard. I tried typing in "grilled chicken", and I get all kinds of fast food stuff. I tried typing in "chicken" and I still got fast foods or other restaurants. None of the options are for "grilled". I hardly ever eat out, and I'm tired of sifting through tons of restaurants suggestions.

I finally gave up and selected chicken breast, no skin.
