Today I dragged a sofa down to the dumpster across the parking lot and then ripped all the cushions, and stuffing out all the way down to the wood and springs.

I work at a university so I have access to a big beautiful campus for walking. I try to take a short walk in the morning and I do all my own errands instead of having my employee deliver paperwork etc. It gets me out. And then during lunch I take a longer walk.

I'm a senior in college and don't have a car, so I walk EVERYWHERE, especially on campus. If time is not an issue, I'll walk instead of taking a bus.

Are you kidding? Let's see....my exercise to get fit, house cleaning, snow shoveling, laundry (running up and down stairs), door-to-door ministry (more stairs)and all those unexpected things that seem to happen on a daily basis.

I'm tired.

LOL Esther! I WOULD be constantly running to the bathroom if I drank THAT much coffee/tea! The water is bad enough! Although at least if you don't get Alzheimer's by drinking the coffee, you'll REMEMBER where the bathroom IS....! Guess that might be a win-win situation! emoticon

I schedule an hour exercise block each day, usually either walking or swimming, but you are right, that's not enough, and with my RA, if I'm still too long I stiffen up like the Tin Man. So I try to juggle computer or reading time with housework, gardening or other activities, and am always looking for tips on working quick exercise into these, like the laundry room workout I found yesterday on another forum: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player

Nothing conscious, although I have a 3 story town house and by the time I get the dogs walked and the daily routine taken care of plus the job for the day, I guess I get around. Your plan is a good one.

I just read in Prevention magazine that you should drink 3 cups of coffee daily to slash your risk of Alzheimer's, 3 to 5 cups of tea to keep your skin supple, and of course, 8 glasses of water. Then you could get your cardio running to the lavatory! emoticon

When walking my dog - 3 times a day - I do leg lifts and lunges, and zumba steps. In elevators, if I'm alone, I do wall presses. While waiting for the barrista do prepare my latte I move around. And on and on....I'm willing to look a little crazy to get the activity in!

I'm getting a lot of good ideas about how to increase my movement. I tend to forget that it all counts and helps. I have started purposely parking further away from the door of wherever I'm going. Funny side effect--I think my car might be a little safer from bumps from other cars. Never thought of that before.

I do a lot of sitting but my best walking days are when I go down to the hospital to check on Nursing Students. They work in multiple buildings and it takes a lot of steps to visit each one.

The chime clock idea is a good one. I've tried that with a timer.

I get up from my desk at least once an hour at work and deliver messages, walk to the kitchen, say hi to co workers etc. I also take two 10 min walks during the workday. I have to say I'm not very good when I get home.

I used to be rather efficient when I worked. Now that I am retired, I too, try to be rather inefficient, esp. when shopping, and it really seems to be helping. I do have difficulty walking a lot due to disabilities but I "push the envelop" as far as it will go!

LOL NDORRIS... ME TOO!! I was always worried about saving TIME and not thinking about the benefit of walking up and down the stairs more times etc! Now I've shifted my focus... And I have to admit I was a pretty darn good contortionist!! HA HA HA...

I'm on public transit and I live on the 2nd floor. I'm always having to do errands, so some weeks I'm gone from mid morning till 7-9pm. Then around the house I'll do chores and play with the cat by running around pulling a shoelace or a piece of ribbon behind me.

That is a very cool idea. I live in a second story apartment and I'm always trying to get everything up stairs in one trip. I never thought of making a lot of trips for the cardio benefits. Seems like it might be easier on me 'cause I do some serious contortionist behavior to get everything up there. (It hurts and the stuff is way too heavy.)

We have a home office that I work from so my days are generally a combination of computer/sitting and housework/moving. I'm able to drink tons of water so I get up constantly for bathroom breaks. My knees are shot so the sit down times give them a rest and then it's up and at 'em again emoticon

I once heard the term "purposely inefficient" and it has stuck with me...

SO during the day I do things like when I'm unloading the dryer I might bring only half the load out of our laundry room to fold, then go back for the other half vs. before when I'd load my arms WAY up so I only had to make one trip...

And with groceries, I'll carry a bag in from the garage then go back and forth 20 times unloading the car vs. when I used to carry as MANY bags as I could possibly handle!

I just keep that in mind on household tasks... My biggest issue is that I end up being on my feet alot but not doing things that would raise my heart rate etc. Although I HAVE noticed if I run errands, I tend to walk alot faster now -- like when I go into the grocery store -- you'd better watch out because I am barreling down the aisles, trying to make it more like cardio....! LOL... emoticon

I do things in chunks so that I'm changing tasks frequently. This generally means I'm getting up every 20-30 minutes and walking through the apartment. I also break my workout up throughout the day.

You know what... that sounds like an awesome idea. Except that I don't... I'd like to, but a desk job makes that difficult. I try to walk to the kitchen or bathroom as much as I can justify and I go for walks during my lunch break but it's definitely not enough.

It seems sort of silly for me to knock myself out with Zumba for an hour in the morning, then plop down in front of the computer until lunchtime.

So I hit upon an idea to keep moving. I have an old clock that chimes every 15 minutes. Every time it chimes, I get up and walk away. Sometimes just to make a cup of tea, but sometimes I get involved with something else and don't come back for a while.

What do you do to keep moving all day?
