I agree with the majority of the people here. While I don't generally count regular housework, I do list an abbreviated time when I do major projects (like cleaning out the closets). Anything that gets you up off the couch and moving counts, regardless of how long you do it... whether you want to track it in your fitness log is completely up to you.

I don't count general housework it as exercise. I just don't get my heart rate up enough for long enough for it to count. But shoveling a significant amount of snow (at least 2 inches) definitely gets my heart rate up so I would count that.

Absolutely not! You are burning calories and doing the work. Why shouldn't you get the credit for it?
Like you, I try to adjust my time spent doing home work-outs to the time I feel I actually did some calorie burning. :-)

I used to be on a different fitness site and now I can't remember if the SP profile includes the same info. Anyway, on that other site you could rate yourself as "sedentary", "lightly active", "moderately active" and so on. I consider myself sedentary, and darn rights I counted calories spent on housework. But if I had rated myself as "moderately active", I probably would have considered those calories as part of my normal lifestyle and not counted them.

I don't count using anything with a power engine because I think it is doing most of the work. But I hand push my reel lawn mower and my mop and my cart of groceries home from market so I count those. Anything that makes my breathing heavy, raises a sweat & increases heart rate for several minutes after I stop the activity counts to me - Spark lists most of these, too.

Thanks INDIANOAKS for the link. I remember skipping the article before because I read the title and thought 110 of anything?--my attention span is not that long! Glad I gave it a 2nd chance. I would not have counted anything but formal cardio workouts. And I work up quite a sweat when I scrub the whole bathroom, the whole kitchen (including--cupboards, inside the oven and refrigerator), or the whole apartment-especially spring and autumn cleaning. Recently a friend and I put up blinds and curtains. It took hours, lots of ladder work, fine muscle coordination and a grand sense of accomplishment when we were done, which is far better than any Spark Points. I was glad to see snow shoveling and lawn mowing on the list. I do both and it can fatigue me to the point of needing to take a break sometimes. Now that's a workout! (big yard and long driveway)

No its not cheating. Sometimes its the only way I can get a workout in and the house cleaned too. Its a win win.

Cheating is having the kids clean the house while you watch them and eat cake then count the time. That is cheating.

ok..i'll be unpopular. i dont count housework, or shovelling, or raking leaves. I only count my planned out workouts. I dont count hikes if i'm going for fun.
But that doesnt mean you shouldnt!!! The only reason i DONT is because i tend to overestimate, and i dont want to be on the wrong side of it.

This is a tricky question, in order for me to consider it cardio for me, I have to maintain a rate of 78-93 beats per minute for 20 minutes or more. I don't think it is cheating if I target my heart rate.

Well, depending on how hard you are doing the housecleaning and if your heart rate is up consistently during the cleaning then I say it counts! There is a place in the fitness tracker under cardio where you can search and they count as cardio activity. If you don't see it on the list I would still add it. You are moving, working the muscles and staying consistent with the activity.

Not cheating at all. If you do something that raises your heart rate, makes you sweat and/or makes you breathe harder then it's exercise.
It should count for double, if you're doing something that's not much fun, like cleaning.

I definitely don't think that's "cheating"! I mean, Spark has it on THEIR list, and think I read somewhere what's considered "cardio" and they talked about household "chores" like that. They just said it needs to be something you do for more than 10 minutes and where you feel your heart rate goes up... Maybe you could search it on Spark...

I log my time for stuff like scrubbing the floors, vacuuming, window washing, moving furniture (if we do a major "rearrangement" like we did the other day), cleaning our bathrooms IF I do all of them AND if I'm cleaning the shower, toilet, etc. I don't count that if I'm just wiping up the counters, cleaning the sinks or stuff I do in under 5 minutes to "maintain"... Does that make sense?

Hope this helps...

As far as I'm concerned, it's not cheating. Particularly if you're working up a sweat and doing activities you would not normally do. So if your chores are above and beyond what is normal, I'd count it.

I am continually surprised at the SP fitness tracker. There seems to be a wide variety of activities whose calorie burn has been calculated. I was especially pleased to see farm work and snow shoveling in there.

When you go to the fitness tool and click add cardio and then hit browse there is a place for home activities and it list heavy cleaning along with other things being done around the house.

I don't consider it cheating. I consider that "Heavy Cleaning." I put 30 minutes down for myself on Sunday for "Moving: Carrying Boxes" because I put together a computer desk and chair by myself. It took me much longer than 30 minutes but not all of the time was lifting, holding and/or moving pieces so I estimated how much time was actually spent lifting, holding and/or moving the pieces where I needed them - not to mention having to then upright the desk as the instructions had you put it together upside down!

I spent yesterday cleaning my house. At the end of the day, I credited myself with 20 minutes cardio exercise for the time I pushed the vacuum. That chore makes me sweat! I also call washing windows "Heavy Cleaning", because even inside, I have to climb a ladder to do it.

How do you decide if your "other activities" and "home activities" can be called a cardio workout? Fishing? Gardening? Playing with the kids? Bowling? Driving a lawnmower? Washing the car? Cleaning house?
