I totslly agree with swithing to lowering the fat content of milk and switching to whole wheat bread will increase the fiber.

Switch to lower fat milk or a higher fiber bread. My family tried that (they didn't want to make any changes) and it started them on the journey to conciously choosing healthier foods.

I read somewhere that every movement counts, including fidgetting. So while I work on the computer or sit anywhere, esp. the car, I fidget my way through the day. It has helped me, especially with the inches.

If you are struggling with water intake, try using a straw - the bigger the better. I've found that I can seriously suck down some water if I use a straw but take dainty little sips once an hour or so if I'm drinking from a glass. Also, play with the water temperature. I'd never have thought it, but I can drink room temp. water much quicker than cold. Good luck!

I'm definitely working on the water intake...having trouble getting past four cups. Do you include Tea as "water"?

This is a great thread and it's making me realize how far I've come. So many of the habits suggested are things I'm already doing and have been doing long enough that I don't even think of them as a "loose weight habit" - it's just something I do without even thinking about it.

Instead of playing a game, searching another site or eating something while I wait for websites to load, I try to take some cleansing breaths and/or use those extra few moments to reconnect my mind with my body... Sit up a little straighter, stretch in my chair, get up and move around, take deep breaths, get a drink of water...

I have been getting out and doing more stuff with family and friends. I used to be the one that would sit around and not doing anything, but now I am going out more and doing more stuff. I thought it would be a drag at first, but its fun! I take my dog on longer walks now (which he loves), I stand up and clean instead of trying to sit down and do it all and I switched from regular pop to diet, which has been a shocker for me since I was raised on regular soda and told that I could never have diet, well my new doc found out I could with a little research, so here we go to diet! This is why I posted this question...these are great suggestions! Thank you!

Yesterday I happened to find myself strength training to the Teletubbies (while my 1 year old was playing). I grabbed a couple of 5 lb weights and went to town. It felt so good and satisfied my craving to be active.

Thanks everyone...keep them coming!

emoticonI second the motion on brushing your teeth after dinner every night. It really stops you from craving snacks. Also I find that if I brush before I start food prep for the day (often in the morning) it keeps me from tasting everything I am doing.

Drinking water is a very good start. Next I would recommend starting tracking. It doesn't matter (at all) whether you go over or under - just start writing down everything you eat. For me, it was 6-7 months before I was able to start staying in my calorie range, but it is a real important habit. Good luck.

I try to stick to a scheduled, even on weekends:
Go to bed about the same time every night
Get up in the morning the same time
Work out about the same time everyday
meals about the same time

Some weekends are busier than others, so I PLAN ahead for the day--make sure I have healthy snacks, or even something for lunch--pack a cooler.
And if I end up at one of the kids practice, or sport events, I find away to walk--during half walk the around the field--things like that

I guess the point is I try to be prepared and plan ahead so I do not get sabotaged by being at the fast food joint at meal time, because that is my only option...

It's all GOOD!

Add to your "Other Goals to Track" list. Things like positive attitude toward lifestyle change, low stress level, doing something for others. Make these 7/days/week goals you have to account for each and every day.

This Spark People program is a total lifestyle change and is not completely devoted to your lbs. number on that scale. I have found that when I check off several items in my daily goals list, and hold myself accountable for those, that my day goes much better and I feel more encouraged.

I've always been one to load my arms with things to be taken somewhere and put away. Now I take one thing at a time and make several trips. Sometimes this means a few trips up & down the stairs. Adds steps to my day.

While I'm waiting for the microwave, I "march" and pull my knees up really high and try to touch my knee with the opposite elbow. After doing that as my only core work (shame on me! LOL) I discovered I had a couple of ribs! Now, it's gotten to be such a habit, I caught myself doing it at my MIL's recently. LOL

Another little habit that's really helped - I brush my teeth immediately after dinner. Helps me not want desert or that late night snack.
