You can take your time. You'll continue getting the weekly emails each week, but you can still work through them at your own pace.

Do we have to complete the challenge in four consecutive weeks? I joined the challenge because getting my family healthy is a main goal of mine, but then I remembered my son is going away next week. Should I wait to actually start, or can we take however long to complete it that we need?

You can just put a "1" in the box if you did it. That way you'll be able to see how many times you did it over a week compared to the 3x/wk goal.

When I go to track the goal of eating together at least 3 times a week, it asks me how much. I am confused what it wants.
thanks!

Thanks you for replying so quickly Jen! :) Can't wait to get started and hopefully get my whole family (mainly my husband because I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter so she will still eat what I fix) to get into this new healthy lifestyle.

It can take a few days, but if you don't get it, at the top of our Team page you'll see a link to Week 1's Action Steps. That's the same as the email, so click there and you'll get all of the info you need.

Hope that helps,

Coach Jen

A week after you get the Week 1 email, you'll get the Week 2 email and can access those action steps at the top of the team page.

Hi, I joined last week and finished the week 1 action steps. I can't see the week 2 action steps and received no spark mail about it. How do I get the rest of the action steps to show up so I can see them?

Just joined this team and like many of the posts here say.... my biggest issue is that the family isnt on the same page as I am about eating healthy or making changes for a healthy lifestyle. In the house I have....

a husband that makes these changes for himself but only for very short periods of time then its back to the same habits

a 15 yr old son whom is an xbox addict... and thinks vegtables should be outlawed!

a 14 yr old daughter that hates any type of meat and would rather be a vegitarian

So any changes I make to things have to be sneaky. I love changing recipes without them knowing and reduce calories and lower fat and sugar content. Since i am the only one that cooks in the house it is easy for me to alter recipes. Getting them all to be active isnt an easy task so I just try to model good behavior myself with hope they will learn from that.

Im excited to hear about others and how they get their slightly stubborn family to make positive changes.

Working hard towards Eating Disorder Recovery!

Hi, I just joined the team. My son is 10 and is always wanting to know if what he is eating is healthy, but is also happy having non-healthy snacks. He eats so much better at Grandma's house because she doesn't buy snack foods. Hubby will pretty much eat what I cook. The trouble for me is plannimg. If I haven't planned and somewhat started a meal, my family will call me at work to pick up takeout on my way home. I don't really like to cook because I'm not that good at it, but I'm also sick of takeout. Tonight they had pizza and I ate leftovers from the fridge! Hopefully together we can make some good changes.

Hello my name is Teresa, and I have the same problem. My family does not seem to be at all interested in doing the necessary changes to become healthy. My son wants to eat only his foods my husband wants only his foods and I am making the changes to my food. Some days I have to make three meals for three different people. I know this sound terrible. Like last night I made a healthy version on Macaroni and Cheese, with Fat free hot dogs on the side. I ate one cup of the mac and cheese and two hot dogs no but, just plain, in a little ketchup. My husband ate it, my son complained and refused to eat it, he said it was good but he would not eat it. My husband asked him if it is good then why will you not eat this. My son said it was just not what he was in the mood for. My husband said oh I can understand that. So my son gets up from the table and goes into the kitchen and makes himself two slices of toast on wheat bread, Good with peanut butter, and butter Bad. Then he eats a honey bun. very bad, and then he eats a Hostess cup cake choc. Very bad. I protested and he says I am eating what is the big deal. I have tried to explain to them that they are setting themselves up for heart issues. Speaking of hear issues my husband has a stress test tomorrow. Ugh.. I am working out and neither of them have any interest in that as well. They are both couch potatoes, one a sports watcher and the other a gamer. I am alone in this battle. I have tried in the past to cut back on the television for everyone the house gets to the point where everyone snaps at each other and there is not a nice word. Noting really nasty just not pleasant. I have cut back my own television. I started that Nov first. I just wish that instead of the boys doing there things and me on the side trying to improve myself, that they would see that everyone needs a healthy life. I love my family. We have always been on the opposite side of everything. I wish I had solutions but I don't at this point. May be together we could brainstorm and come up with some solutions. Check out my blog half baked. Teresa

Teresa Kaye, Thanks for listening.

I think you'll learn some good information from the weekly emails that addresses this issue. You might also consider posting your question in the Diet forum on the general Message Boards, where more members will see it and give their suggestions.

Hope that helps,

I've got an unwilling partner in crime. He is stubbornly hanging on to that junk food like he will wither and die without it and I've got kids who are used to too-big portioning. Any tips or articles on these "challenges". I don't want this to be an individual pursuit, but it can be if necessary.

I can only change what I am willing to acknowledge

Did you get the Week 1 email? There are 4 specific action steps in there to follow (like reducing TV time, etc.)

I'm not sure if I understand the 1st week's challenge..is just to tell your family about the plan to go healthy and make a weekly meal plan? Or will I get more specific action steps?

Can I redo week 3? I have done well however I have not forced my children to exercise per se. They have had playdates where they play on the trampolene, water play with friends at summer camp, etc. but not with me. Not sure if it count as family exercise if I am not there with them and they are doing it at school or at a friends house.

I have a silicone steamer that just fits in the bottom of a pot that i use to cook most veggies and cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and string beans all turn out fabulous with so much flavor. You can sprinkle sea salt or onion salt or powder on them or even braggs spray and cover them while the water under the steamer boils. Depending on the veggies it can take anywhere from about seven to twenty mins for them to be soft when you poke them with a fork. I got my steamer for Christmas a few years ago but never used it till recently. Now i use it almost daily!

Hi everyone, I have been reading a lot of posts on here about veggies, my daughter is willing to try new veggies, but I don't know how to cook most of them. I can do corn, string beans, she loves roasted carrot's, but how do you cook zucchini? or cauliflower? or squash? I have no idea......any ideas would help. Also.... what are you sneaking them into? and how?

Thank you!

I am wondering how to add more challenges. At one point I came to a screen with the option to add "make a family favorite meal more healthy" or some such. It had more goals on it, and I intended to add a few more. I can't find that screen now. Any ideas?

I had this problem too, but came up with a clever solution. When my ex and I were together he worked late hours but could either get away for a dinner break or leave work around dinner time. He also worked near a local playground. Waiting for him to get home, eat dinner, and then go to bed was not an option so at lease a few times a week I would pack a picnic dinner and take our son to the playground where we would meet him for dinner. My son loved this and was more motivated to actually eat (he was really picky) so that he could go play on the playground. So we were eating as a family and getting some good exercise together as well.

I am a work aholic myself. The breakfast is a good idea and i hope you can make it work? If not are you able to meet him at work and pack dinner? If so that might be an option even if its sitting in the parking lot and talking and eating something light. My wife and kids have done that before and it makes my day and my kids as well. I hope he can get to the point that he can slow down and get on a better schedule but i feel your pain. I am rite there with you. Good luck and hope you can make it work.

You cant force them. They have to make that decision on their own to get healthy. All you can do is give them the information and let them make the decision. No matter how much they need it. My parents are diabetic and i can not get them to excersize for nothing but when i see them doing something rite, i tell them. Hope you can get as many people as you can to join and good luck.

I joined this team because I'm trying to motivate my whole family to eat better and live healthier lives. But except for my dad, none of them have SP accounts. And my dad never checks his or logs on.

I went to the "Invite others" link, but you can only enter SP names, not outside email addresses. How do I get my family to participate in this challenge, since they haven't responded to my emails to set up SP accounts?

I have a question, and am up for any suggestions. Our family just started the Week One goals (I think we'll be on these goals for more than just a week). My husband works long hours. He doesn't get home until after our daughter is in bed. So, eating dinner together, even just 3x a week doesn't happen. We've tried to make breakfast our "family meal time", but the problem we have is that everyone is so tired from getting up earlier (to get that meal time in before hubby has to leave for work) that it isn't really a communal, family experience. It's more like 3 zombies hanging out around a table. The only regular day hubby has off work is Sunday, so we eat all our meals together then. Is that enough? Should we be putting more effort into family breakfast? Do meals that we eat with other families count? (For instance, we often eat Sunday lunch or dinner with my brother and his girlfriend, or my in-laws.) Thank you in advance for any advice.

If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes.

I have been sneaking veggies into all sorts of things for years. I have been caught a number of times, but I still keep doing it!
I like the suggestion of cauliflower in mashed potatoes. That's one I haven't tried, but will.
Looking forward to more suggestions!

I have to add that I also sneak veggies into other foods (puree or dice squash, spinach, green beans, etc and put them into casseroles, soups, pot pies, etc....this is how we discovered that we actually LIKE mashed cauliflower MORE than mashed potatoes! LOL), but after the meal while we're cleaning up I tell the kids what was in it, I don't present it in an "Oh YEAH! I GOT YOU!" way, but I very casually while we're discussing the meal work it in... Either something like: "I thought it turned out very well too. I'm glad I thought of adding the summer squash to it." or (on the other end of the spectrum) "Yeah, I thought it was kind of unusual tasting too, next time I will leave out the broccoli."

When the kids cook I tell them their meal must have at least 2 veggies in.

My 15 year old likes carrots, raw cauliflower, and green beans.
My 13 year old likes cooked broccoli, carrots, and green beans.
And my 5 year old likes raw and cooked broccoli, cooked cauliflower, carrots and green beans.

They all three say they like onions, spinach, and squash cooked and in other foods, but NOT alone.

Our house rules is that we will NEVER force them to eat anything they don't like, but if it's on their plate have to try it. That could mean a nibble that they spit back out. Giving them control worked well. All three of them had moments when they went "Mommy I didn't like this before, but now I DO!"

Just keep offering and act like it's no big deal.

I sneak veggies into food. They have cookbooks available that show you good combo's or you just have to keep trying them. I put spinach in a lot of meals, dice carrots up real small, etc.

Kids go through stages with fruits and veggies. Keep offering it and maybe one day he will surprise you. Good luck. =)

I am having trouble getting my 2 and a half year old to try veggies! He does love fruit and oatmeal...for the most part he is a pretty healthy eater, but I cant get him to eat any vegetables unless my husband is eating a salad, then he will eat the lettuce!

Sorry it took me so long to respond, I have been having a rough 2 months. The best advice I can offer is to keep trying to make healthier options available. Switch out the junk for healthier options and do as you have been doing and keep inviting them to Tae Bo or even offer them a class they may be more interested in like yoga, tai chi, pilates, etc. Good luck!!

How do I get my teenagers to agree to this, or do I just not say anything but keep inviting them to Tae Bo with me, give them healthier meals,etc.. I kinda mentioned it (the challenge), and I was given the "What, no mom, thats lame.."

They are in the weekly emails. If you don't get the emails, you'll find them at the top of our Team page.

Hope that helps,

Hi Joalyne, I'm new to this challenge and to spark people as well. I think as we get used to the system we'll both make more friends. I've noticed that in reaching out to people and joining lots of teams the friends slowly start to make their way to your page. Enjoy your journey and good luck to you!

This thread is really to ask questions about the specifics of how this challenge works. I'd recommend starting a new thread with your question- more people are likely to see it and give you suggestions that way.

Hope that helps,

Coach Jen

My family is in to this and we are really having fun, but I just don't get how this whole team thing works. I wanted to make friends as well, but am new to the online way of doing so. My other teams (which are not challenges) have a lot of impersonal one word posts, and I don't feel particularly welcomed or acknowledged by that. Am I missing something? I would like to immerse more into the community aspect of the weight loss and challenge as I have read about how people were so encouraged by their teams. I don't want to sound like a whiner either! I realize I have my share of responsibility in the community as well. Thoughts?

We are moving cross country next week, with a 2 week roadtrip, then 2 weeks in military hotel, then a 2-day drive to VA. Do I have only exactly a week to post my success, or is there some leeway for travel? :)
