Okay so how long before I should see improvement - I am doing everything (I think) one hour technology free, nice shower, glass of milk, then bed at the same time every night ... very relaxing quiet music as background noise as have already tried earplugs before sleep challenge with no luck, hubby's snoring is killing me ... and day one I got between 3and 4hours sleep day 2 and 3 none at all and day 4 the only sleep I got was a bit on the couch :-(

Help :-(

I may have not set myself up with realistic goals. I wanted to get 8 hours sleep with consistent sleep/awake times or 11pm and 7am.

Day 1 yesterday I tried but couldn't fall asleep until 12:30. So getting up at 7 left me short of my desired 8 hours. I do have the option of sleeping longer and wonder which is more important at this point - sticking to the schedule or getting the 8 hours. I've been surviving on less for a long time.

Cryssybug, falling asleep is a huge problem for me. I understand that my long residency in Alaska has messed up my melatonin levels to the point where I can exhaust myself, do relaxation drills, listen to relaxing music, pratice self-hypnosis, or anything else I care to try, I can't make the cross over into sleep. My doctor finally told me to try melatonin pills. It works! But I still have trouble settling down, so that instead of taking the 45 min it's supposed to take, it's taking about 2 hrs. More work is needed.

I've just received an answer to that and am as of yesterday getting messages - boy am I getting messages, lol, I was advised to go into my Start page and select Email Preferences in the upper left under the word Start. Go thru the preferences and make sure you have selected all that you want and at the very bottom make sure you have not checked off the Do Not Send Me Any More E-mails - mine was checked off and all I had to do was un-check it and voila!

I'm wondering if anyone seems to actually have more trouble going to sleep because one of the questions for your sleep journal is what time did you go to sleep or how long did it take you to go to sleep. It also asks if you woke up, how many times and for how long. I seem to lie awake trying to fall asleep hoping to get to sleep quickly or I try not to look at the clock to see what time it is and I find myself awake longer than usual. Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, what do you do about it?

I've found lots of people tell me that generics do not work as well as the brand names. I have read this online as well. Especially with antidepressants, antipsychotics, and sleeping medications. Some people have bad side effects with the generics and others report that they don't do anything at all. If you can afford the expensive stuff, I would try it. Maybe your doctor will write a script for a few to see if it helps.

I am on Serequel XR as well. I have found that since I have been switched to the generic brand of this drug, it actually causes me to wake many times during the night. When I was on the name brand, I slept like a baby. My Dr. can not figure out why I can not sleep. He just said that I am taking a very powerful drug that should definitely make me sleep so he has no idea. I also found that if I take it too early I am asleep within 35 min. and if I take it too late then I have the same problem of not being able to stay awake during the day and I feel groggy all day long. Honestly, I think it is just the meds. Being on that many I think that you will have a hard time not feeling groggy in the morning. I know that this has probably not helped you at all, but I just wanted to share that I have the same problems with that drug, as do other people that I know.

Hi there!

I am not a DR and I guess a lot of people would feel a bit intimidated to give you advice unless they too have had similar experiences. One thing I noticed is that your doctors focused on the meds (and the times of the meds) and that you mentioned that coffee/other stimulants weren't options for you. I kind of wonder if there is something else you can either add or change about your nutrition or your routine that might help. For instance, do you get your exercise first thing in the morning? I have read from some of the articles here on Spark and elsewhere that exercising at night can be problematic in terms of getting to sleep and I think that it may be useful in the morning.

Best Wishes!

I've only just recently joined the challenge, and I love the idea of it and to be able to complete it. The only thing is, I have an added hindrance which comes in the form of many little pills. I was hoping that maybe someone else could offer some advice or weigh in on the subject.

You see, I have epilepsy, and my seizures aren't completely under control, despite being on three different medicines. The cause of my epilepsy is scar tissue on my brain from a surgery I had as a child. Anyways, most all of my seizures happen at night. These are called nocturnal seizures and normally happen during the changes of the sleep cycle. I also take Seroquel XR at night for my depression, since it is supposed to make you sleepy anyways. A medicine called Remeron was introduced several months ago. It has several uses and is an antidepressant, but also makes you sleepy and sleep more deeply... since for awhile I was waking up in the middle of the night for hours at a time, and it keeps my mind from going through sleep cycles at a normal rate, hence lowering my chances of nocturnal seizures in the process. I'm also taking Vistoril (anti-anxiety and OCD med) and Zoloft (antidepressant).

That may be a little bit too much personal information, but I'm really looking for help here. I've played around with the times I take my medicine. I found if I take my medicine too early (say 7:00) I wake up in the middle of the night. If I take it too late, I have a habit of waking up early enough to get my daughter ready for school, but I'm so tired that I go back to sleep...and from there I sleep about 4 more hours.

Anyways, my point to this is... I'm trying to get my sleep cycle regulated. I want to get my eight hours in, but I also want to wake up feeling refreshed. I can't exactly rely on morning stimulants such as coffee, because they can trigger anxiety. Both my doctors have told me just to play around with the time I take the medicines, and I might can work something out. However, to me, it is more than just a hit or miss and taking chances. There has to be something that works so I don't feel groggy in the morning.

I'm terrible at journaling, but I wear a BodyMedia Fit (almost) all the time. It is great-- it figures out when you're laying down vs when you're actually asleep. I'm not sure how accurate it is but it seems to me that when it shows I had a high sleep efficiency night I'm usually more refreshed, and vice versa. I use that to help me figure out how to improve on my sleep. Unfortunately, my alarm goes off at 3 am on weekdays so even if I go to bed as early as 8 pm I'm not getting enough sleep. I am "bad" and "sleep in"... 'til 6 am on weekends but try not to stay up past 9 pm to keep a good nighttime habit.

This may sound silly, but I am confused as to when to indicate my sleep accomplishments. I track in the Other Goals area if I was able to get to bed on time, sleep at least 6 hours, etc. It is obvious that I track on the day that I wake up if I got up on time, but I get confused as to which day to indicate that I went to sleep on time and that I got 6 or 8 hours of sleep (I have more than one challenge that I am tracking sleep for). Does that go on the day I wake up or on the day that I went to sleep?

that is completely up to you. some people set their alarm but want to get up earlier so waiting for their alarm to go off is getting up late for them. if you feel like waking up earlier is getting up on time then check it.

I have a question about the get up on time challenge. I realize that if I sleep beyond the time I am supposed to wake up, I should not check the box. But what if I am waking up too early and not being able to get back to sleep. Technically, that is not exactly "on time" (the time I set the alarm for and was intending to get up). Should I still check the box saying that I got up on time if I got up earlier than the time?

My challenge is my BF doesn't believe in going to bed at the same time every night, and when I try to sleep he keeps me up. He doesn't sleep more than about 6 hours, and I'm sleeping about 11 hours (trying to get in to do bloodwork on that for my doctor).

So even if I go to bed at the same time I can't necessarily sleep, and it takes me a while to get to sleep. I wake up maybe 4 times a night to go to the bathroom, and about 15 times a night because of him making food, or snoring, or talking in his sleep, or thrashing about.

We live in a one room trailer, so it's not like he can go in another room. We're always within about 10 feet of one another.

Any suggestions?

I would say yes and no. This challenge is designed so you can sleep better without having to take anything. however I think if you need to take something in the beginning then thats ok but make sure to ween yourself off of it. To me its kinda like taking a water pill to help you lose water weight or even a diet pill to help you lose weight. Try to see if you can sleep without taking a sedative.

If you go to the top of the page there should be 4 weeks listed and a box that you check when you finish that week. Click on the week you are on and it will tell you what you should be doing for the week to obtain better sleep. That is all you have to do. Nothing more to it other than work on getting more sleep and sleeping better at night.

I like that get up on time each morning was added to the goals, but shouldn't it be a check box like the get to sleep on time challenge, and not one where you enter in how much? Just what I was thinking... or what should I be entering in the "how much" box each day for that particular goal?

Sry nobody's questions have been getting answered. I never paid any attention to this and thought other people were anwering your questions. I will get better even if I have to answer all the questions myself.

Ruth that is a very good suggestion and as soon as I figure out how to add it I will certainly do so!

This is more of a suggestion than a question. Would it be possible to add the team goal of getting up on time each morning? This is something I would really like to track as part of my goal, and joining the goals is by choice, so it wouldn't necessarily be something that everyone would have to choose to do. I would love to get a streak going on this goal.

Thanks

Ruth

I am not receiving any emails; my main problem at present is not being able to sleep for 8 hours every night, I may sleep 4,5 or 6 hours, although I am in bed for 8 hours to be on the bi-pap machine. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thank in advance.

I am not the page moderator; but I can't see why anyone would NOT be able to continue the challenge on past the four week goal. If you need to build a better habit pattern, then keep working it! It will come together for you better if you are able to satisfy the need to achieve this goal.

This is my first challenge. Whenever I have to take something that smells or taste awful, I hold my breath, sounds funny, but it works for me.

I chose this challenge because I now only get 4 or 5 hours of sleep a day (I work 3rd shift from 1200 midnight until 8:30 a.m.) I normally don't get into bed until 3 or 4 in the afternoon and get up at 9:30 pm. So far, I have solved the problem of having a bright room by painting it dark brown and purchasing blinds that restrict light. I am going to set up a schedule that will help me to get into bed earlier everyday and also try some calming techniques. If there is anyone else on the team who works odd hours, let me know what you are doing to get enough sleep.

Sweet dreams to all.

The smell is awful so I plug my nose when I take it. But my real secret is to take it with green tea which neutralizes the taste. I take the capsule. Hope it works for you.

Not sure if this challenge will apply to me and how to pick goals for the weeks:

My problem is sleeping too much and not getting up on time in the morning. I sleep more than 10 hours usually and I want to cut down to 7-8. I have no medical issues, just like to sleep and unlike most people here I fall asleep very quickly and easily - I just don't want to get out of bed in the morning.

HI I don't know if this will help or not...you mentioned hurting when you sleep but did not mention what caused it..did you injure yourself or have you been diagnosed with anything? I randomly started having a problem with my lower back. It was severe and acute. I ended up going to a chiropractor for it. Turned out I had a sacroilliac joint problem. I can tell you two things that helped me and I think you cuold try without a problem but you should see a doctor. 1) get a new mattress or sleep on a bed you know has a good one to see if that helps. If it does, it's your mattress and you need a new one. 2) Try using a pillow between your knees as you lay on your side and use only one pillow under your head so your spine stays aligned. A bod pillow might even be better. 3) Check on youtube for exercises for lowerback...part of my problem was that I was sitting a lot and not moving. So doing some stretches really helped AND in my case if I layed on my back with my knees up and my feet on the ground and tried to squeeze my legs together working against force this helped a lot. I had my son go to one side of my legs and he would place his forearm between both knees and I would squeeze inwards while he tried to keep my legs from closing inward. You could also try using a pillow and squeezing it hard between your legs as you lay on your back. Be aware I am not a doctor but sharing what helped me. Try walking a little and stretching and see if movement will help. If none of these work and you really have bad pain that is immobilizing you or the pain you have doesn't go away after 1-2 weeks..go see a chiropractor or doctor. As far as starting over...quit the team and rejoin. Hope this helps.

I don't know where to put my questions: First off, I didn't get to set my goals because of computer issues--only got one and can't go back. Second, I'm not doing good at week one and they think I'm on week three--the time change wasn't my friend. Thirdly, I hurt when I lay in a position to sleep no matter what it is and wake up with my lower half sore. Any idea what you call it so I can research it? And four--can I start over?

Is anyone else having problems with the Quiz link? I'm at the end of Week 1 and the link hasn't yet worked for me. I could check the box and move on but...meh, I feel like I wanna take the quiz. I don't think I know anything about sleep so taking the quiz would probably be really informative...

JJS1959 said her sleep doctor stated that you don't stay asleep if your iron is low. That is real interesting. Thanks for that information. I have had problems with low iron and this could explain my trouble with sleep.

I'll try the gingersnaps with his tea. He's already a tea drinker (he's nearly 14) since he's had problems for so many years. He was on melatonin for 5 years and maxed out the dosage and it stopped working. I am making him take some time off of the melatonin just to get his body to try to regulate it's self. They had him on sleep medication that was also a mood leveler but took him off that a year ago so we are back to square one.
He does a "sleepy" tea and antianxiety teas but I will try catnip. He's pretty open to anything because he doesn't sleep well. He also has some stomach problems so the gingersnaps may do a great double duty.

You are right about the smell of valerian, it smells like Toe jam! lol I take it in capsule form but you still smell it! Some times taking it with grapefruit or orange juice helps with the taste. But I alway take it after I had some food in my stomach too.

As for kids, try catnip tea with honey and gingersnaps will help them with sleep and tummy aches. That's easier for kids to tolerate and also help their stomachs too. And it will make them sleepy. Gingersnaps cookies are more tempting than taking valerian capsules. Or you can pour some ginger ale soda in the tea. Will taste sweeter and if you first put some honey in the tea before the ginger ale, kids will think they are grown ups to have tea. Will tempt them to drink to be like Mommy. (But dont let them see how you make it!) Hope that helps. Chamomile is also a great eta for helping kids sleep. But you will have to nnake it sweet for them to take it! Both help to sleep for kids. I cant tolerate Chamomile (allergies) but I have taken it when desperate with another tea ( mullein) .

How are you taking the valerian? I tried it once before and it tasted so awful. I took the whole bottle as directed and it was the worst month of my life. Just the smell of the capsules made me sick to my stomach. And then I would burp it up occassionally. It worked nicely and I would love to use it with my son who has a lot of sleep problems. However the taste is so prohibitive.

I think I slept better last night. Took a valerian (its much like Valium but nit as powerful ). I got two hours of sleep before I woke up. and woke up again and again every two hours. I hope I can sleep longer each night.I got eight (8) hours of Rest! (I wont say sleep because I never get to deep sleep!)

I can't sleep at all.
I have night terrors.
Wake up screaming sometimes.
Don't know why, I see spiders ALL
the time while I'm sleeping but it's the
people that wake me up. As soon as I wake
up I'm ok because I know I have this problem.
It's just so ANNOYING though!

I already do try to go to bed at the same time, but I want to be able to go to bed an hour earlier, and I do stay in bed the whole 8 hours, for I believe it helps me lose weight. I learned that eating no later than 4 hours before going to bed does help. I eat my heaviest meal for breakfast, then for lunch I eat even less and at night I just have some fruit and a piece of cheese to help me get thru the night. I still wake up every hour! The Drs tell me its panic attacks that keep me in a state of arousal! I feel I wake up in REM sleep cycle because of the reticular system malfunctions; it started after having been in a car accident. And my sleep problem got worst after a fall and my bones shrunk one inch. I blame it all on my reticular system; it does not shut off, and I believe its due to too much trauma to my nervous system. I dont think any Dr even understands that. I know several people who said their problem with sleep and MS happened after a spinal injury? How was your sleep problem initiated?

DID YOU KNOW TAKING BENADRYL EVERY DAY YOU CAN GET HOOKED ON IT AND IT CAN RUIN YOUR ABILITY TO SLEEP EVENTUALLY? iTS HOW i FIRST STARTED HAVING A SLEEP PROBLEM. MOST SEDATIVES AFTER AWHILE CAUSE SLEEP PROBLEMS. WISH I HAD KNOWN I WOULD HAVE NEVER STARTED TAKING IT! (sorry about the caps).
