I'm a nurse in the hospital. When a patient is admitted, we have to ask (as part of their admission history database) if they have an advanced directive, regardless of age or admitting diagnosis. Most cases, it's obvious if they do, but some are legitimate questions. We have to know, legally, if--heaven forbid--something terrible happens, how far do you want us to take the efforts to bring the person back? Some people only want the chest compressions, but not intubated. Some want everything. Others only want a little time, then let go. It's a very grey area sometimes.

Unfortunately, I saw a doctor pulling the same nonsense with a patient a few weeks ago. he kept commenting on her being very obese. Did he think she had vision problems in addition to weight problems? Sometimes--especially in her case--some medications that are needed to function can cause significant weight gain. He didn't bother to ask if there were mitigating circumstances for her weight, he just assumed, like many people, that she was lazy or ate too much. He was ultimately removed from her case and she refused to have him ever enter her room again. Some doctors do have the bedside manner of a wet sock! Some also have what I call the "god complex" because they believe their own pooh doesn't stink. We nurses do our best to avoid those doctors because nothing will ever please them, regardless of whether they're wrong!

End of life directive is a voluntary form you fill out that if anything goes horribly wrong in the Dr's office or hospital, you have given them permission to either keep you alive even if your brain isn't or not to keep you alive. this is becoming more and more the practice for most doctors and hospitals.

Never say you didn't have enough time: You have the same amount of time that was given to Helen Keller, Albert Einstein, William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Winston Churchill.

Nice that you called him on that! Some Drs just don't have that "bedside manner".

Proud of you. You go girl. I went to the doctor as my knee was giving out and the nurse asked if I wanted a "End of Life Directive". I thought what the heck, its just my knee. emoticon

I just love it when doctors state the obvious. Like the doctor who told me (at 280 lbs) that I had a weight issue. Really doctor what was your first clue? emoticon You tell it like it is girl.

You go, girl -- keep doing what you're doing, and if your doctor has the tact of a falling brick wall -- let it be water on a duck's back.

Think of it this way -- you know *you're* going to change, pity him, because he won't.

i love it when the doctor shows vast medical knowledge by pointing out the obvious,,,,so...now do they have a cure for cancer that theyve figured out im obese....lol
i got hit hard recently when i looked at my chart and seen my bmi....im half fat. a croissant. but- i chose to fight back and not give up. but it hurts. i dont like it one bit. and on a recent trip to a different doc, he called me a "heavy lady' ELEVEN times.....i finally asked him if he thought my ears were fat and blocking my hearing, he looked at me with a puzzled looked and said "nooo.....why?" i told him he'd called me heavy 11 times and i already knew that info could he possibly use his knowledge ot shed some light on something i didnt no....he got red and apologized....
