I wish I could work out in the morning, it is much more beneficial to burning calories. But I get up at 4:15 already. To add in a 45 minute workout (that's how long the videos I have are) I would have to get up at 3:30. And that is just not going to happen. So I get home from work, eat dinner, unwind for 30 minutes and then exercise. It's not the way I want to do it, but it is the only way I can get any exercise in. Unfortunately errands at night either don't get done or take away the exercise time. I usually get in 4 days during the week, and both days on the weekend. (I exercise first thing in the morning on the weekends).

Right now, what's working for me is getting up at 6am and doing my workouts in the morning. It's a nice quiet time of the day, and I like that after that, I'm done for the day! I have a few different videos that I do, so I don't have to leave the house or look pretty. I just roll out of bed, change and head downstairs.
I was going to the gym during my lunch hour for a while. I didn't mind it, but found that it was easier to find excuses for not going. Suddenly, work that I had plenty of time to do became a good excuse for skipping the gym. Or invites to lunch were more enticing than going to the gym. Also, I hated having to get cooled down and "re-done" for going back to the office.
The morning routine is working for me now. I may have to adjust my wake-up time when school starts up and my daughter has to be on the bus at 7am. It'll mean getting up about 15 minutes earlier, so I'm done with my workout in time to get her up and out the door.
Oh, and I should say...I am NOT a morning person. It takes a lot of self discussion to get myself to turn off the alarm and get up. But I always feel better when I'm done!

I get up at 5...walk the dog, do a SP workout, Bodyrock or ZWOW workout and a butt workout...then I get the kids up, get ready for work, and head out...if I wait until after work, it doesn't happen! I have to start before I wake up! No coffee until dog is walked!

I am lucky enough to get an hour for lunch (what Mommy takes an HOUR to eat lunch!?!?).
I take maybe 15 minutes to actually eat and spend the rest of my break walking in the neighborhood around my work. I know it's not the hard-core cardio I ought to do, but it's better than nothing!

I work out in the mornings before work most days. For the most part I find that after work I just want to crash and it's so much harder for me to get up. Although, I've been slacking lately and not as dedicated to my workouts as I'd like to be. So, I've just been getting it in wherever I can lately. I'm hoping to get back to getting up every morning and knocking it out.

I was never a morning exerciser until I had kids. Now, like many of you, it's in the morning before the kids get up or not at all.

I typically work out in the evening after work. The weekends I have a little more flexibility and workout in the late morning. I don't mind working out at night b/c it lets me unwind after a long day... And I get to enjoy some me time!

I've just started exercising in the morning before work. 4:30 comes early, but as others said, too many excuses pop up later when my energy is drained. Today was the first day back to work after winter break, so it was the first day I really had to get up that early. Tomorrow is day 2 - hold me to it.

I have to work out early in the morning, or I'll never fit it into my day. I go for walk/run with my dogs while the kids are sleeping. If I wait until the evening... I'm too busy and/or exhausted to motivate myself to do it.

I work out on my way home from work, on my running (treadmill) days, I do evenings or sometimes after the boys go to bed. On Saturday, I work out at 9:00 am.

I am working out in the mornings before anyone is up otherwise it does not happen. I also am able to ride my bike the mile to work and then add my kindergartner on the way home, not every day but at least twice a week. It also seems to help to come home and get 20 minutes of yoga in to destress. It's hard but it sure does make my day go smoother and I feel more energetic and confident.

I'm back to early-morning workouts this fall, because that disrupts the family's schedule the least. (And because I can find a million excuses between the time I leave work and when I get home!)
So far, so good!!
Amazingly, it only works for me if I have to leave the house. The promise of exercising in my basement doesn't do it for me; I either have to go for a run (not going to happen this time of year, in the dark!) or hit the gym. So to the gym I go!

I find I just can't be consistent working out every morning. I started tracking my sleep and found I need 8 or more hours of sleep to be at my best (I know, that sounds insane, but I found after a few days of 7 or less, I'm irritable, make more mistakes and am generally "mean mommy"!)
So, after a YEAR of trial and error, I skip Mondays and Fridays for planned exercise. Tuesday evening after dinner, but before kids bedtime, I take a cardio dance class that I LOVE, Wednesday I do either weights or cardio from 6-6:45am, then I go for a 5 mile run on either Saturday or Sunday....and house cleaning the other day, which is a workout! I've managed to stay consistent on this plan for over a month.

I've been working out at 10 p.m.- glad to see I'm not the only one. I like going after the kids are in bed. I've been considering the early mornings, but I'm not very good about going to bed early, so getting up at 5 a.m. would just mean even less sleep that I am getting now.

I always say I am going to workout early in the morning, but when I drag myself out of bed, I usually use the quiet distraction free time for school instead. If I get a workout in, it's in the early evening, after I put dinner in the oven, and last however long it takes for dinner to cook!

My days begin too impossibly early, so getting up any earlier to exercise is craziness. I have to get up no later than 5 am to get myself, my kids, my husband, the animals, lunches, breakfasts (leave for work by 7)...So my exercise routine is home at 6, Girl Scouts on Tuesdays until 8-8:30, dinner every other night and kids in bed by 8:30, on Tuesdays dinner then bed by 9-9:30 for kids, clean kitchen and living room, do a load or two of clothes, exercise about 9:30 or 10, then in bed by 11. Exercising at night helps me sleep a little better. Everyone told me not to exercise at night because it keeps you up, but just go with what your body says. If that's the only time you can exercise, do it!

I just started really exercising and for the past couple of days I have been working out after I get off work (around 7ish) - unless it's Monday, then I work out before I go to work (8am-2pm). I have a 6 year old daughter and she will do the strength training workouts on here with me so I don't feel bad exercising when I get home.

I've been doing the Rookie 5 K running program here on sparkpeople so I've been trying to fit in 3 runs a week. If I can, I like to get up in time to run in the morning, and I take my daughter with me in her jogging stroller. If I wait until after work, it gets hot. Ugh.

I agree with Daviegrrl, I've started working out with the hubby when 1 or 2 a week, as our schedule allows. This was my offer once he got our bikes operational. Now the entire family can ride bikes together with the 2 year old on the back of my bike! I tend to work out in the morning also to get it out of the way and usually before my crew of two wakes up. Otherwise they want to lay on me or imitate what I'm doing.

I try as hard as I can to exercise in the morning, before my daughter wakes... and she's usually up between 6 and 6:30... so sometimes it ends up being 5am. I have yet to make that consistent and sometimes end up doing strength while she's watching cartoons in the living room!

I work back shifts on a part time basis, 2 nights one week then 5 the next, my job's pretty heavy going with a lot of walking involved so if I'm scheduled for cardio on a work day I'll skip it out but if I've got strength training scheduled I'll still do that on a work day since I can do that whilst watching tv with the Mr at night thus not taking away any family time lol On my days off I'll do my workouts as they are due, my son is 4 so he likes joining in copying me with the strength training and usually shows me up lol

I have to work out in the morning before the kids are up. I am not a morning person, but when I tried pushing my workouts at night, I would always find an excuse why I didn't have time. Thankfully I don't have to leave the house until 7:30, so I wake up between 5:30 and 6. I do it every day, 3 days or cardio, 3 days of strenght and Sundays are for meditation (and my sanity)

I am going to have to start going back to the gym, so it is going to be in the afternoons, after work. I hate working out at that time, but early morning doesn't work, so that is what I have to do. Yuck!

Since I'm a working mom, I struggle with fitting time into my day for exercise without taking away quality time with my daughter. The solution? I now take 30 minute lunches at work and spend them on the treadmill or elliptical in our basement fitness center. That way I'm not waking up at the crack of dawn, nor am I taking away from evening "quality time" with her. Its a win-win situation!

Monday thru Friday I work out 5 or 530 am. This way, I am able to get my shower, get dressed, get my four girls up, (and get them up again, and get them up again), and moving (and hubby too!) and get to work on time. The biggest advantage to working out in the morning first thing, is I don't dread it all day and think, " I HAVE to work out but I'm just too tired"... "but I have too much to do".. "but (insert whatever excuse you can think of)." I get grumpy when things are lingering over me. This way it's done and I feel so good about myself and more in control of what I eat and drink. During the weekend, I work out whenever I want as long as I work out. That's the beauty of a weekend. :)

Since transitioning to home- working from home 20w 100%- I still try to keep things the way I did for years- I work out before work. This way - I don't take time away from the family. I am not going as early as I used to- before 6am, now I am going either right at 6am, or other days I go after work- when I have my kids in extended day at their school- I don't have to pick them up until 6pm. So tonight I am doing cardio so will be running- I am aiming for 6 miles.

I would like to work out in the mornings, but I have to be at work at 7 a.m., so I would have to get up at like, 4:30 to get a work-out and shower, then ready for work. It's just too early for me. But I can usually fit it in when I get home from work. I feed my daughter, (she's 8 mos. old) and then she takes a nap. So it's around 4-4:30. Then I shower and eat dinner. I find it gives me energy in the evening to spend time with the kids and their dad, but not so much that it affects my sleep. I like to work out earlier on the weekends though.

I work out in the afternoon, on my way home from work. I tend to get into the office at 7, so I try to leave between 4 and 4:30, and get in an hour at the gym before picking my daughter up from day care.
You'd think that since I'm such an early morning person for work, I'd work out in the morning, but I can barely drag myself out of bed, and then I just want to get to work. (I think better in the morning.)

I have a few systems, but it varies. Sometimes I'll work out early in the morning (at like, 6am) when I'm on the super early shift, doing a 10 minute WUWO. Other days it'll be between 9 and noon when Jr is at playschool. Other days when I've been working through his school hours, it will be in the evening. The irregularity doesn't seem to have a negative impact.

The only time of the day that I have to work out is in the evenings when I get home with my daughter. I give her a little snack and have her in the pack and play (she's 12 months) and I get on the elliptical and watch something that I DVR'd

I have only one time a day I can exercise, about noon. I feed my little guys lunch and then I work out while they eat. Then I clean up and eat my lunch before heading off to work. If I don't work out right then, it doesn't happen!

I usually work out 3 times a week in the morning from 5 to 6:15ish. My husband leaves to work at 6:30 and my daughter gets up around that time. I wake up at 4:45 leave to the gym and do cardio mostly and some weight training. My husband is in construction so count him out on working out with me :-). He's naturally a thin guy so I am solo most of the time. If I try to work out at night it never happens. I tend to work out harder at the gym then at home too. I also would feel guilty picking up my daughter from daycare and going to the gym so I just go when shes asleep. I say work out in the am it makes for a energic day!

After a couple weeks of tinkering I have hit on a plan that is working well for me. Husband and I are working out together from 8:30-9:30pm while watching our favorite show on Netflix. We alternate cardio and weight training nights. It has helped so much to hold each other accountable to get it done each day. We have started looking forward to it as our "date" each night. One night a week we take off and eat popcorn together and just cuddle or watch a movie.
The kids are tucked in when we start, so no guilt for missing out on time with them.
Some days I am very tired, but I have been so encouraged by my weight loss over the past several weeks that I just push through. I know it is worth it and will give me results.
Thanks for all our great replies ladies! Being a working mom is tough and I appreciate hearing how you are balancing work, family, and self-care.

I usually exercise around 8:00 pm. But, it's just for 30 minutes. I also can't get up early to exercise, no matter how hard I try. So, night time is the only time for me.
Also, many days I walk in the mall during my lunch hour. It's really great. Not only do I get some exercise in, but I am also more awake for 2nd half of my day.

I walk as much as I can and have walking meetings when the other person is willing but often I am tied to my desk most of the day. I too have walking shoes at my desk and i also have a small set of hand weights that i use to do some strength training during those 2 hr meetings. I use the stairs as much as i can and i also have a jump rope to work out whenever I can grab 10 minutes. If you miss the gym maybe you can arrange to have someone be with the kids 1 or 2 days per week and do the gym then. Use the weekends for fun family events that keep you active.

We have a good walking trail near my office so I try to walk every day during my lunch break, then eat my lunch at my desk. I keep a pair of walking shoes in my desk drawer so I don't have to worry about wearing comfortable shoes every day.
How old are your kids? Can you exercise with them? I try to go on a bike ride w/ my youngest (he's 9) a few evenings a week. He really enjoys it and I get some exercise. When they have sports practices, I walk around the field while they practice.
Maybe one of those ideas will work for you. I know it's hard!

I have done early morning workouts in the past (5am-6am so I can be to work by 7am) but just can't make myself get out of bed on these cold mornings. I am now working out from 8pm-9pm after the kids are in bed. The bummer is, I never get to the gym anymore because it closes at 8pm (I live in a small town, only one option). I also talk myself out of it alot because I am so tired by then. I feel super guilty exercising when the kids are awake because I have already been away from them all day. ugh. How are you ladies handling the scheduling of your workouts?
