I find when I'm at my emotional end, sometimes it's a good time to have a shower and wash my hair! Crazy, I know, but it's the alone time. After the shower, you feel clean and calm... worth a try :)

When my daughter was little and we both were having bad days. We would turn up the radio and dance or make silly faces at each other or go outside and race. Something to make us both think of something else.

Also popping a piece of chewing gum really helps me. I'm not an emotional eater, but I do have the urge to chew or snack on something while working. I'm a writer, and when I sit down to write -- especially if I'm on deadline -- I automatically want to reach for something crunchy to work my jaws while I ponder over sentences. I have packs of Orbitz chewing gum in my desk drawer to stave off the cravings during such moments.
Sorry to hear about your rough day. emoticon
Good luck!

I'll never regret a work out, but I almost always regret not working out.

I can totally relate with your post. I wish I had an easy fix but it's a battle of the will. One thing that has helped me is when I feel the desire to emotionally eat (especially after I've had my meals for the day) I'll brush my teeth again. Something about clean teeth makes me less likely to reach for the chips! Then, you might try playing a game or doing something creative / fun with the kids (dancing, playing simon says, any game that's active is nice so you can log some exercise too!) which will get theirs and your mind off of whatever is going on. If it's close to bedtime maybe read with them or play some music and stay away from the kitchen. I won't even go into the kitchen if I'm feeling weak!

For me, it's the small things that make me eventually shift directions. I'll drink a full glass of water or tea (anything that might make me feel full). I'll look at a picture of how I want to look or quickly flip through a fitness magazine while the kids sit beside me and flip through a book. I literally picture a stop sign in my head to stop the obsessive thoughts of wanting to eat because I'm stressed. I do whatever I can to stop thinking about food - which is easier said than done! It definitely helps to start doing another activity to get your mind on something else.

Good luck and I hope you find some things that work well for you. Hang in there and keep fighting...it's worth it!

Hi folks! Please give me your suggestions - I need help! I had a really rough evening today - I came home from a long hard day at work to find tearful, distraught children (ages 4 and 6) and spent the rest of the evening calming everyone down. I'm frazzled and tense and I automatically reach out for food to calm myself. The suggestions for emotional eating that I've read - go for a walk, call a friend, just can't work in this scenario! I can't leave a still tearful preschooler to call a friend, go for a walk, or even log on to this site! What can you do that is quick and readily accessible to calm yourself down other than to eat or bang your head against the wall?

Oh my gosh, Anna! What a week for your family. Thoughts and prayers for everyone involved, especially your niece. I hope for the best-case scenario.
Exercise is my number one outlet for stress, so hopefully the running has helped ease your mind, as well your body.
I didn't do so great this weekend. On Friday night, my husband and I grilled chicken in our backyard after our baby went to bed. I ate brown rice and green beans with it -- good -- but we cracked open a bottle of red and finished most of it. Oops. I did get up first thing Saturday morning and powered through 30 minutes on the eliptical, but I was dragging. Then we went to our friends' house on Saturday night for another BBQ -- all bad-for-me food. We had steak, caprese salad (cheese, tomato and basil) and potato salad. It was all delicious, but not diet friendly. We dragged today because we were out too late, and then my husband had to leave for the airport for a work trip. So me and the baby are flying solo this week. Hopefully, I'll still be able to squeeze some workouts in! I don't even want to step on the scale tomorrow.

Have a good Monday guys.

Congrats on the running and fitness, and good luck keeping on track on the cruise - it sounds like so much is going on with your family life right now, you'll need all of the energy you can get with those great work-outs. Best to avoid those sweets - I think it would be an easy time to over-do it with the stress.

I feel so terrible for your niece! My son is seven and my daughter is nine - I can't imagine either one with such an illness. I wish her a speedy recovery and send all good thoughts her way!

I've been walking pretty much every day and doing fun fitness-type activities (at least, non-eating activities) with the family. I'm a little sore from all of the water fun, but it's a new feeling for me as I'm not used to being part of the action. So I'm enjoying all of the aches and pains.

I hope you can have some much deserved R&R on your cruise. Keep up the great fitness!

I'm going to try to keep your lesson in mind when on our cruise! It will be hard because everything is included except drinks. I'm hoping to have lots of veggies & fruits!

This week has been horrible! Monday evening we learned that my step niece may have a brain tumor, she is 8, the same age as my daughter. Scary, we are all hoping for the best, they are still running tests and doing MRI's to get more conclusive answers.

Tuesday morning I was informed that my sister had separated from her husband of 16 years. Mark and Lisa started dating when I was 15, so Mark truly is part of the family. It is a difficult situation, I'm hoping Mark can give Lisa the space she needs to sort thru her emotions and find what she is looking for. She doesn't want another relationship, she just isn't happy.

Thursday, my 85 year old grandmother fell and broke her hip. Everything is aligned properly, so the doctors are hoping it will heal with no "assistance."

I called my mom last night and told her the roller coaster isn't fun anymore and I want off!! We are looking forward to the weekend. We only have 1 thing scheduled (that never happens during the summer). Tomorrow we have a birthday party for my best friend's sons. Kids will have a blast, she hired a magician.

Then my husband and I took Monday off. We are going to a theme park with my parents, my sister and her 3 kids, and my brother with his wife and her daughter. This was planned back at the beginning of July, we all need it SO MUCH! I can't wait!

I will say, I have done great on the fitness side of things. I have jogged 3 times for 25 minutes, getting in about 2 miles each time. I plan to get out tomorrow morning. I would love to keep up the every-other-day pattern I have going. emoticon

Hope everyone is doing well.

It sounds like we have a lot to look forward to with our little one! Of course I'm treasuring every second of her being a baby, now toddler, I guess, it's comforting to know that even more fun is expected in the future. I can't wait to be the SUV-driving mom, carting kids to sports and lessons and tournaments. I love being a mom.
You guys have some great trips coming up! Six lbs in 10 days was pretty drastic, but I probably overdid it. Wait, no, I definitely overdid it. I just wrote in my blog that I actually learned a valuable lesson. It was so easy and so fast to undo all of my hard work in such a short period of time. Vacations are necessary for the mind and soul, but I think it was a bad decision to completely let myself go. It made it that much hard to come back home and jump back into my fitness and health routine. I prolonged that vacation, cavelier attitude by being lazy about working out and not caring what I put into my mouth. I think it's important to give yourself a break, and indulge in life, like good food, and sleeping in, but it's also good to keep yourself in check. It's like that old saying, everything in moderation, right?
So who's been working out this week? I went to the gym on Tuesday and Wednesday and did some strength training. Last night, I took my daughter on a run. I'm thinking about going on another run tonight.

Sounds like you guys are sure busy this summer (is it any different any other time of year?) I agree - summer does seem to have a more relaxed schedule - even if it's a packed one! I've been very busy with work this week, but I hope that it is finally settling down again - I have been managing to get my walks in - did it again tonight :) Gold star for me.

To answer a previous question - I have two kids - one that's nine (girl) and one that's seven (boy) - and both are SUPER active, which is great. I also have a wonderful husband and a loyal little pooch. So our house is always full of fun.

Hope everyone is surviving the heat!! Early morning and late night workouts are best these days.

Living~ my in-laws went to the DR a couple years ago and had a blast. Enjoy every minute of your trip! I can relate to life getting busier as the kids get older. I'm also dreading school starting back up. The start of school launches a couple other things as well. The youth cheerleading program I coordinate starts in the end of August with sideline cheering, then rolls into competition cheering which lasts until March! Plus, my husband is the Cubmaster for the local Cubscout Pack. There are about 75 families involved in the program and 6 or 7 dens. I've actually been trying to get in regular workouts before going to work because of the heat. I've gotten in 2 or 3 workouts each week for the past 3 weeks. Not consistant yet, but I'm making progress.

Tomorrow, I plan to get out and do my W4D3 workout in my 8 week 5k training. I would like to get in a least 2 more week 4 workouts before moving on to week 5. Well, I'm off to bed

Hope it's ok to join the conversation. I can definitely relate. I have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 kids and a hubby in there somewhere! Seems like life gets busier as the kids get older! My girls are 13 & 10 and I am dreading school starting. I really like the leisurely evenings right now where I can work out and still have time to spend with the family. I know once school starts, I'll be rushing to games and figuring out how to make myself workout BEFORE work. Boy, that's scary!

The Iceland trip sounds incredible and a Disney Cruise will be a blast. My hubby is taking me to the Dominican Republic in Oct for my b-day. No kids allowed and my oldest keeps referring to it as the trip where she's not invited! Works for me!

Sorry, got a little off track with my posts recently. But I'm back on board!

Mrs. Hos. Iceland?! Sounds like a wonderful trip. 6# for 10 days of indulgence... Oh, I'm in trouble. We are going on a Disney Cruise in November... Yikes! I'm hoping to be active to offset the over eating I know I'm going to do! We have 2 children, plus 2 dogs and 3 cats. Yeah, life is busy LOL!

Steph ~ The kids LOVE karate. Well, I should say Blaine LOVES karate. Gwen is more of a tumbler than ninja... But she does really well with the technique and is starting to be more aggressive in sparing. She has gained a lot of confidence since starting karate. She is very small for her age (she will be 8 in 6 wks and weighs in at 42 pounds fully clothed) I pushed her into karate because I was sick of hearing her say "I'm too little to do that..." It worked. Since starting she has pushed herself in a lot of other areas. Whereas before she was fit by nature of her size, now she is a dinomo of muscle, energy, and determination.

Keep up all your hard work and focus ladies. I am only on week 4 of my 8 week 5K running plan... I'm about 6 weeks into it.... The heat kinda derailed my efforts. But I've started getting out in the am before it gets too hot. If I don't leave the house by 6:30 it gets a little dangerous do to the amount of traffic. But I'm making progress slowly but surely. and Hey, my dog has lost about 5 pounds! How come he dropped his extra weight so quickly?! LOL.

Thanks! How did your walk go?

I'm hoping to go for a run in the morning. It's been really hot here, so if I'm going to run, it better be early. I love to strap my daughter in the stroller and go for a jog before breakfast. It's a good way to start the day.

How many kids do you guys have? I just have the one for now. She's almost 14 months old. We also have a huge dog, Mortimer. He's like a another kid. Our first baby, really. And just as much work. ;) We're thinking of trying for our second after the summer.

I'll never regret a work out, but I almost always regret not working out.

Hi MRS.HOS77!
Well, your vacation sounds great - what a treat to go with your hubby to Iceland! I'm sure those six pounds will be gone in no time :)

I still plan on my after-dinner walk - I'm just heading home from work now - had a crazy busy day and yes, the walking is part of my stress-reduction plan. Too much to do and not enough time. The laundry is suffering a bit, but I've decided that it's worth the sacrifice!

Welcome to the conversation.

Hello ladies! I'd love to join in the conversation. Busibodi, it sounds like we have similar interests for a group.
Good for you Fitsteph2010 for your after-dinner walking streak! That sounds like a real stress reliever as well as good exercise. (Walking hills is nothing to sneeze at.)
I'm redoubling fitness and health efforts after gaining (gulp) 6 lbs while on vacation this month. My husband and I left the baby with grandma and went to Iceland for 10 days. It was amazing, but I indulged and ate whatever I wanted. Those dang 6 lbs came home to the States with me. I worked out on Sunday night, and today, and began eating healthier on Monday. My goal is to shed this unwanted weight by the end of the month. We'll see how it goes!

I'll never regret a work out, but I almost always regret not working out.

Hi Busybodi -
It's great you have your kids in Karate - what a healthy activity for them to drive some passion and fitness at the same time. Sounds like Blaine and Gwen did really well. Good for them! I managed to get my 5K walk in this morning - and good thing - we had quite the storm hit us after dinner, so I would have been out of luck! It was so hot, I figured first thing in the a.m. or after supper were my best options and lady luck was with me :)

I drank lots of water today too (I must admit, with a bit of Crystal Light in it - I put it in half-strength, but I need a little something in there!!)

Sounds like you are doing great Steph!

My kids had a Karate tournament yesterday. They both did well, placing 2nd in their division. Gwen was up against 2 boys that are about 15-20 lbs heavier and 6" taller. Blaine was also the smallest in his division. He beat out the 2 biggest kids in the division, then lost his second match with a boy who actually is a really good sparing partner for him. Blaine lost on more of a technicality. He kick a little too high and lost some points. He'll gain control as he gets older.

I took my dog out for a walk/run this morning. That was interesting! He did really well and only dragged me to a stop to leave the "Scooter was here message" on a telephone pole twice!

Hope everyone is having a great summer, and drinking lots of water. Holy is it HOT out!!

I've kept up my walking - tonight is the first night I haven't done it - but I was coaching 7-year old soccer for 2 hours - running around a field and dragging soccer equipment I think is sufficient! How are people doing? It's summertime - any vacation plans?

Awesome streak Steph! 12 days is a great start! Getting in you exercise and taking time for yourself to unwind all in one. That deserves a... emoticon

We just got back from camping yesterday. So I've been playing catch up on laundry and stuff. Haven't really gotten back into working out. We've had temps in the 90's plus high humidity... blah! We did get in a good hike while camping. And I've been doing better with the foods I'm eating.

My daughter is going to be going to vision therapy sessions (which aren't covered by insurance) so we need to buckle down budget wise. This actually helps with my diet! I can't just swing into D&D to get my iced coffee 3 times a day!

Well I decided to start walking this month. I do it right after dinner time - I leave the dishes and just go. My husband is home with the kids, I plug into my iPod and I go for a 5km walk (takes me about an hour.) It's hilly and I even do it in the rain - although one night it downpoured on me and I thought better of it!! It's been a great de-stresser for me, makes it so that I don't eat too much at night because I think I'm still feeling too 'healthy' from the walk!! I'm pleased I've kept it up - I'm on day twelve now...

Hope Everybody had a great holiday weekend. I managed to get in 2 good workouts over the weekend and I think I did pretty well on the diet end of things as well.

Back to the work week tomorrow. I have a busy one this week. Work Tues & Wed. Gwen has an eye dr. appointment on thursday. She is going to see a behavioral optometrist... Anybody have any experience with this. All I know so far is it is expensive and not coverd by any insurance yet. From what I have learned so far, they compare the movements/focus/strength of each eye and how the eyes work together. I guess more and more kids are born without a dominant eye, which makes it harder to read and write because your eyes are "fighting" for the dominance. Anyway, after the appointment we are headed out for camping through Sunday morning. This will be are only camping trip this summer because we are going on a cruize in November and have a lot to do to prepare the house for our departure.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

So my holiday weekend is off to a great start! I finished getting all of my flowers into the ground! I also pulled the weeds in the vegetable garden and started on the herb garden. Tomorrow I need to finish the herb garden and feed all the plants. I also need to track down the tomato cages before the plants get too big! I did that a couple years ago, and let me tell you... Holy it is a pain to try to feed a half grown tomato plant into one of those things!!

Does anybody have plans for the 4th?

I'm too stubborn to quit or back down... So I'm going to keep posting on this thread til other busy mom's start checking in. LOL, even if I'm talking to myself... emoticon

My husband and I joined a "Biggest Loser Challenge" today. Between 7/1 & 9/1, 5 of us are going to follow our own diet/exercise plans and by the end we will see who loses the highest percentage of weight. The winner will win the $100 pool we are all put $20 into.

Go Me & Spark! Hopefully I will see good results and be able to spread the spark in the process. I'm at a bit of a disadvantage as everyone else has pretty physical jobs vs. my desk job. And I have the lowest amount of weight to lose to begin with. Jason thinks I still have a chance (I think he wants my $20!)

Hello Stephanie, I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for. I was hoping to find a team that chats and tries to encourage members. A team that I can check in with on a regular basis to help keep me accountable and active. Maybe if we start posting in this thread, more ladies will start being active.

I love the team name. I says a lot. I knew when I joined the team, I would be reaching out to mom's that are just as busy as I am. That are trying to juggle being a mom, wife, work, bills, cook, cleaning, car pool....

There are a lot of blogs, but I don't know if I have the time to stay up to date with people if I have to read all their blogs. But I know I can check this thread everyday to see what is going on.

Hi Busibodi!
You are right - we need to get some more activities going - thanks for reaching out! What do you want to do with us? Maybe we can start some challenges together :) We're a group of busy, active working moms that do come and share online at time - most of us are pretty good at blogging (although not me lately - been travelling with work!)

Hope you have fun with us!
Stephanie

Hello ladies, I'm new to the team. Hoping to generate some positive activity. I'm looking for a team I can build connections with. Most of the teams that are really active have thousands of member, I think I would get lost trying to get to know people. I was hoping with the smaller number of members on this team, I would find a good fit. But there doesn't seem to be a lot of activity....

This is one spot where we post - but you can post in any of the forums or even pose a challenge to the group... sound like we might need a challenge to start one message post a week! ;)

Hi everyone! I'm not sure I'll get the sparkpoints. I'm maintaining and not that interested in getting points anymore...except for tracking my food (I might just have to do that for the rest of my life). I need to exercise more, though, so I'll try to get some of those points!

We only have the one - a goal of SparkPoints. It was 100 per month - but I just changed it to 500 per month. We tried the steps, etc. but as working moms, we are all so busy - I think simple is best.

The times I have been the most successful at healthy living with SparkPeople are the times I track the most points. We get points for tracking food, water, fitness, reading emails and articles and just showing up (login wheel). So if we can all aim for 500 points per month, we'd make some great progress. Tracking is at the bottom of the page.

Let's all consistently meet our healthy goals in 2011...

Hi!
With the changes in the team forum, I thought I'd set up a little thread for general chat. It can be about any questions about this forum - or really, anything at all!

Looking forward to a great 2011!
Steph
