Hi Nancy & Paul!
We're got home yesterday afternoon from our trip to the RAP (Red Ants Pants) music festival. We camped in a pasture outside White Sulphur Springs, MT, with our two Montana kids (& SIL) and some of their friends (and a few thousand folks we didn't know) and had a wonderful time. The music was great ... headliners were Charlie Pride, Brandy Carlile, Josh Ritter and Jason Isbell ... but there was lots of talent there. The weather was a little cooler than last year (most of the weekend) and we had a really good time.l

You two are putting me to shame with all your exercising and healthy eating ... I really need to buckle down and make some healthier choices!

I need to go unload our trailer. We were so tired when we got home yesterday that we just picked up the dog, picked up some Chinese food, and vegged until bedtime. We work up to some lovely cloudy skies and a little rain this morning. Now, I must get busy!

xo Betty

Hi Paul,

Well if it's any consolation, I'm still struggling with the five pounds I gained over Fourth of July. Like you, I'm fairly vigilant these days about my meals. Thankfully it hasn't been that difficult because of all the Farmers' Markets going on these days. Also, when I go out to eat, I literally eat half of the meal. That seems to work well too! (Darn! If it didn't, I could stop doing it!)

Wow -- that's great about the running. I just finished a book (Confessions of a Fat Marathoner) about running. I do dabble in running a bit and really do enjoy it. That's likely something I should re-start. DC is so oppressively hot & humid, I really only run in the fall and early spring here.

Your message made PERFECT sense. That week back from vaca is always so darned rugged. I'm glad you're back into the groove, more or less.

Today I'm hoping to really buckle down and get into some of the newer stories I had hoped to tackle (essays!). We'll see how that works out. When Wayne's home on the weekends, I tend to goof off more than a bit. I would have loved to have kayaked this weekend, but he had a crazy week so that clearly was not in the cards. Perhaps next weekend we can give it a go again.

As far as Martina -- she's great. You know her husband is a famous sound engineer and (obviously) works all her shows. It's so clear he adores her and they make a great team. It's wonderful to hear about a long-term couple that still feels that way about each other (I sometimes feel that we're a dying breed!).

Thanks so much for the note! Look forward to hearing more! Nancy

Hi Nancy & Betty,

Well I made it through the usually mentally hard, "work week after vacation". Hope that sentence makes sense.

My weight has been creeping up, so I figured after vacation would be a good time to start again. I'm about 10-15 pounds over where I would like to be again. So I'm eating better, we'll see what happens. emoticon

My wife Kathy and I are going to run a half marathon in October. The "Urban Cow" in Sacramento. I did it a couple of years ago, so it should be fun. I'm starting my training for it, today my long run was a little over 5 miles.

That's really cool about covering Martina McBride, I actually have her greatest hits CD. She seems like a regular person who just happened to make it big.

More later,

Paul

Hi Betty & Paul,

Whew -- it was a crazy week for work but a good one. I think I told you I spent last Saturday with Martina McBride. Lucky me, I got to cover her tour for Country Weekly magazine. It was such fun but I must admit it was a bit tiring (I'm old!)

It looked like I was going to do that AGAIN today with Darius Rucker BUT ended up not moving ahead with that (long story). I am SO GLAD.

What I must admit I'm most happy about, though, is I'm fully back on track on both diet and exercise. I feel so much better when I don't make up for stress with my formerly bad habits.

How about you guys? What's going on with your week?

Wayne and I are just going to "chillax" today -- as the kids say -- and perhaps grill out. Maybe we'll even fire up our wonderful chiminea tonight -- it's blissfully "cool" in DC.

As you see, it's still life in the fast lane!

HI guys -- Sorry I've been such a slacker writing! Busy, busy, busy at work.

The kayaking was excellent. We both had such stressful weeks so that was just what we needed. I don't have a lot to tell you about the trip -- it was just a river trip -- except the day was perfect!!!

Fencing Betty? Wow! You go girl!

Paul -- I'm so happy to hear you had a wonderful time in Maui. Did you get to a luau at all? I did one there and just loved it (although the young people dressed in traditional garb -- to lead the luau -- looked SO uncomfortable!)

I wish I had some amazing stuff to tell you guys. I'm still up 5 pounds but working hard to get it off. I'm back to kettle bells and, of course, swimming. And now, one more cup of coffee and then back on the treadmill desk!

Love your notes and want to hear more.

xx

Well I'm back home. Somewhat rested and hoping I don't break my alarm tomorrow morning. The week after vacation is always hard for me.

Betty you sound like you are ambitious working on fencing. So you are going to a RAP festival?
Have fun.

Good morning Paul & Nancy!

Your vacation in Hawaii sounds great Paul! Happy to hear you've had such a great time! Hope you've gotten your batteries recharged and made some wonderful memories and will be happy to get back home and back to work. ;)

Nancy, did you enjoy your kayaking adventure? The photos you posted made me very envious! Looked like you were off to cover a concert afterward. Tell us all about it! (BTW I noticed I misspelled Gardiner, MT, in my last post ... just in case you are interested in staying there.)

John and I tackled the job of getting linseed oil on a couple hundred feet of fence along one side of our yard yesterday. It took us six hours. We started early, but the heat caught up with us before we finished. Good to have it done and checked off the "to do" list though.

This afternoon we're going to concentrate on getting the trailer loaded (except for groceries) and ready to go on Wednesday. We're going as far as Bozeman, MT, that day and then on over to the RAP festival on Thursday. I'll get the food plans sorted out and taken care of Tuesday. Chaco will be staying in the Pet Lodge while we're away.

Looking forward to hearing about the latest adventures from both of you!

xo Betty

Hello Ladies,

Tomorrow is my last day on Maui. We've been here since last Saturday and it has been wonderful. Been doing some sight seeing, running, hiking, swimming, playing games, eating and drinking. My brother and his family are leaving later today.

Sounds like everyone has been having a good time . I'll check in in a couple of days.

Like the new bike rider. emoticon

Happy Friday back at you Nancy (& Paul)!

On your Yellowstone Nat'l Park trip Nancy, you could stay in West Yellowstone or Gariner (MT) ... they are both located right by a Park entrance and have lodging and dining options. West Yellowstone has an IMAX theater and a few more amenities than Gardiner. You'll need a rental car to get there and I think that's the best way to explore the park (they'll give you maps and a Park newspaper at the gate). You can also stay in Jackson, WY, which is located near the Grand Teton Nat'l Park entrance. If you enter there, you'll get into Yellowstone a little further along the way. All those towns are tourist towns. Cody, WY, would be a good place to stay also and has a great museum (I'm told), it just takes a little longer to get into the Park from there. [And I haven't even mentioned the north entrance where you can drive over the Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge, MT. Gorgeous country! A little more remote.]

We're gearing up to head for the Red Ants Pants (RAP) Music Festival next week. This will be the 4th annual festival and will be our third time to attend. We're really looking forward to it.

I spent a few days with my card-playing girlfriends up in Island Park this week. This summer is zipping by ... we've had a lot going on.

Have fun kayaking today! ;) xo Betty

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is wonderful!!! You should be so proud! I'm proud of you!

I have never done anything like a 5k so I would love to hear about it. How did you go about preparing for it? I'm guessing you walked but I'm wondering if some folks walked and jogged or how that worked. Did you wear a pedometer or anything? I'd love to hear how many steps that you took. Congrats again!

Thanks for the great info. on Yellowstone. Thanks for the housing idea too. Do you have any thoughts on where I should look just to get other options for a good place to stay? Also, any special tours you'd consider?

I'm guessing we would fly into Salt Lake and drive, but we have't gotten that far in our planning yet. I can guarantee, though, that we will not be going in the summer. We are off season people!

Congrats again!!! So happy for you! You MAY have just inspired me to try one. xxx

Hi Nancy & Paul!
I did it! To my amazement I finished the 5K walk in 54:28.9! I really thought it would take me over an hour, so I am jubilant! Unbeknownst to me, all the participants over 50 years of age had been entered into the Senior Games and I ended up getting the bronze medal for my age group (well okay, there were only three females in my age group... but hey, I got a medal!). That was my first 5K ever. I've always been standing on the sidelines and yelling encouragement; it was a good feeling to get in there and do it myself!

About Yellowstone, Nancy, I don't know where to begin! It is a fabulous place. What time of year would you go? Like most (all?) national parks, it is really crowded during the summer months. September would be a good time. And, how would you get there? Your could fly into Salt Lake City and drive up to the West Yellowstone (WY) entrance (driving right past Pocatello on the way); or fly into Jackson, WY, and go through Teton Nat'l Park into Yellowstone; or fly into Bozeman, MT, and drive to the Gardiner, MT, entrance (Gardiner is where our daughter lives). There's also the north entrance up by Cooke City, MT, which is a little less accessible to an airport and the east entrance is from Cody, WY. The scenery is beautiful no matter which way you go.

Park headquarters is in Mammoth (near the Gardiner entrance). There are lodging accommodations there and at several other locations inside the Park ... most are pretty pricey from what I've heard and require reservations long in advance. We've only camped in the Park or stayed with our daughter when she had a little shanty (as she called it) at Lake when she was working on the Lake Trout project. Old Faithful has a hotel and lodge and lots of boardwalks to wander along.

There is a grand loop that circles through the heart of the Park that takes you past many spectacular places you can stop and walk around. There are trails you can hike (you'll need bear spray!).

Those are the things that come to mind right away. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. ;)

Well, I've rattled on long enough for today. Hope you're having a lovely weekend!

xo Betty

Hi again guys,

I'm glad to report that I got my new SP tracker today. I lost my other one way back in April and can tell I'm not as active as I was with it. All fingers crossed this boosts my motivation!

HI guys!!!

Betty -- before I forget -- I really want to get your advice on visiting Yellowstone. That is on Wayne's next vacation list item and I'd love to do it. We know next to nothing about it so if you'll let me impose on you for some info, I'd sure appreciate it.

GO GET 'EM yourself on that 5K! Wow -- that's fantastic. I am now reading the Kindle Book "Confession of a Fat Marathoner!" and she underscores it doesn't matter how slow you are. You DO it when some people won't even walk around the block!! So please don't worry about that AT ALL!

Sounds like you have some wonderful plans. ENJOY.

Oh this weekend for us -- R&R. I'm still exhausted from the kayaking, etc. last weekend! Clearly my stamina isn't what it used to be.

All is well here though -- swimming, working and so forth.

TGIF!!!

Happy Friday Nancy & Paul!
I'm happy to report that we've gotten up and out every morning this week (M-F) and walked our neighborhood route (a little over 2 miles), so I'm ready to walk the 5K tomorrow. My time will be laughable to serious 5K'ers (like Paul), I'm sure it will take me a little over an hour, but I'm looking forward to it.

Tomorrow afternoon we'll go with friends to the annual salmon BBQ that is a fundraiser for the Search and Rescue folks, so we've got a busy Saturday planned.

Next week is our annual 3-day "girls" trip up to a cabin in Island Park (near West Yellowstone) ... six of us laugh, play games, eat and drink. No wonder I'm not losing any weight!

Hope Paul is having a fabulous time in Hawaii. Stay cool Nancy! ;) Betty

HI guys!!!

So wonderful to hear from you.

Paul -- what island will you visit in Hawaii? I've been to Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. Believe it or not, I went for work each time (and it was craziness -- but wonderful). How fun is this! Are you flying, cruising or????

I really hope we can go for our 25th wedding anniversary (in two years) but we shall see.

Betty -- it sounds like you're doing just great! Thank God the healing process has been so terrific.

Let's see - for the holiday we went to Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland. We met friends there for hiking and kayaking. DC was like a blast furnace when we left so suffice to say I LOVED the cool weather there (it was almost 100 degree in DC and mid 70s at Deep Creek).

You both put me to shame with the 5K! Good for you! I've dedicated the rest of the summer to getting healthy again (I'm up about 10 pounds!) and just replaced my SP tracker (now if they will solve the online glitches they are having this week so we can use 'em. Sigh -- )

Much love, Nancy

Hi Paul & Nancy!
We had a nice holiday weekend too. Friends came up from SLC and we just hung out here at home watching some soccer and tennis and playing some games. We did get out for a bike ride on Saturday.. They left yesterday afternoon and a colleague of John's who was in town from Boise came to dinner last night. It's kinda nice to be back to just the two of us today. ;)

We got out for our walk first thing this morning and decided we need to get up and out earlier tomorrow so we can get more done before it heats up too much. We're signed up for a 5K walk Saturday morning. My knee surgeon invited his joint replacement patients to enter the Joint Jaunt event as his guests. They offer 2.5K, 5K, and 10K (walk or run). I am not a runner but I can't certainly walk the 5K (may be the last one in, but that would be okay). John signed up and will walk with me.

Your trip to Hawaii sounds like fun Paul! I've never been there either. Hope you have a fabulous time!

Keep making those healthy choices! ;) Betty

Well it was a nice relaxed 4th of July around here. Watched a movie in the afternoon, took a nap. Did a little bit of work on my backyard project and grilled some steaks.

I'm on my way to work soon. So I'll check in later.

Happy 4th of July!!!!

Just ran the Roseville Crimestoppers 5k this morning. It was nice to get out early and run. Slowest time in a while.

I've been super busy at work, long hours trying to get a project done. So haven't had much time to check in. Also haven't had enough time to finish my back yard project!!

Going on vacation in a week to Hawaii. Never been there, but I'm really excited to get away.

Hope you all have a great 4th of July weekend.

Hey Nancy, good to hear from you! Hope you're doing some fun stuff along with all your work this summer!

I smiled the other day when I noticed the FB posts about what sort of person you are ... I thought you definitely were intelligent for surrounding yourself with nurturers (Maria, Terry and me). emoticon

June has gone by in a blur for us, but we're going to be home more in July. Our friends from SLC are coming to spend next weekend with us here. Our 38th anniversary is Thursday. Our deck is nearly finished and looking good (I didn't think it would take over a month when the project started; guess I'll never learn!)

Life is good! Post when you get a chance. xo Betty

Good morning!

You've had a lot going on Paul, it all sounds great (except the 105 temp!). Your anniversary road trip and hike sounds very pleasant. John and I were out through that area a couple of years ago. We stopped in Sacramento and rode our bicycles on a nice trail that started in a park and ran along a river there.

Wish the USA/Portugal game would have ended a little sooner. :)

Nancy, hope you're enjoying some pool time and not working nonstop (although I know you like to be busy). Anything exciting going on with you?

John rode over to Jackson yesterday and spent the night. This is a work trip even though he's retired. LOL He's meeting with a couple of men he's collaborating on a fishes book with and they are collecting some fish today. That gives me some time alone to get caught up on things around the house. I miss him though. It sure is quiet without him here.

Guess I'll take Chaco for a walk. Have a lovely day! Betty

Hi Nancy & Betty,

Been a while since I checked in....

The graduation and the graduation party went well. It was 105 the day we had the party, glad the air conditioning held up!! Had about 30-40 people here so it actually worked out better than I thought it would.

My boys stopped by on fathers day, they are 25 & 22. They're getting old!!

Yesterday was my wedding anniversary, so Kathy & I went for a day road trip with a really nice 3 hour hike thrown in. We live near to Sacramento, so it was either go to the ocean or go to the mountains. The mountains won (and are closer) . We had a real good time, made it as far as Truckee (about 25 miles from Lake Tahoe).

Currently watching the USA / Portugal soccer game. Go USA!!

It's so good to be back home. I do love all these trips we've been taking, but it is really nice to be back home for a while! Good to hear that things are going well for you Nancy! Summer has finally arrived and it is a beautiful day here today!

Hey Paul, hope that graduation party was super fun! Are you doing lots of running now that the days are nice and long?

We did a day trip out on Spooky (our CanAm Spyder) ... did a big loop up over the Teton Pass and into Jackson, WY, then back down the Wyoming border area and home. We were out eight hours and I still had a smile on my face when we got home, so maybe we will venture over to Mt Rushmore on Spooky before the summer's over.

This last trip was up to McCall, Idaho. We stayed at a beautiful state park (Ponderosa) ... the weather wasn't perfect, but we had a great time.

Our deck in down to the final stages. The contractor should finish up on Tuesday.

That's all our news. Hope you guys are healthy and happy! ;) Betty

Just have to say I hope you guys are well. All's well here. Just busy as a bee (thank God! We self-employed people live for that). DC has been hot and steamy but the pool has been a lifesaver (and I am worshipping the air conditioner).

Went to Ohio for a wedding, going kayaking in western Maryland over the 4th of July.

Looking forward to your news! Nancy

Hi Nancy & Paul!
Good to hear from you two!

Congrats on your writing jobs Nancy! I'm so happy for you that things have worked out the way you wanted them to! (Glad you told Paul about the name thing too, I was having a hard time deciding what to call you.) emoticon

What an accomplishment on refinishing your cabinet doors, Paul! We have some friends here who have been in that process (plus re-aligning drawers, etc.) for a couple of years, so you are really doing great! Did having the graduation party spur you on? John and I notice we seem to get a lot more done when a deadline is looming.

We did a big remodel a couple of years back that involved moving walls and new cabinets, etc. That took around three months (a contractor did the work). We started in August and surprised the kids when they came for Thanksgiving.

We have the same contractor replacing our deck now. John has done a lot of the tear down and prepping of support structure boards (treating and painting). The new deck should be done in another week or so.

We're heading to Bozeman, MT, for the coming weekend. We'll be visiting our other son and doing some biking and stuff with him. He drew my name last Christmas and this weekend is his gift to me.

We have so many trips coming up that our home is beginning to feel like a docking station. All fun stuff though.

Sending happy and healthy thoughts your way. Hope June is off to a great start for you!

emoticon Betty

It is SO WONDERFUl to hear from both of you. I think we should make a pact not to apologize to each other for absences though! Busy lives.

Happy birthday again Betty! Wow -- you sure don't look your age lady! You GO girl! I'm so glad you had a terrific birthday (which I'm sure was even better since you made such a rapid recovery).

And Paul -- WOW on those cabinets. We had our whole kitchen (which is small - we're in a townhouse in alexandria, Va right outside of DC) gutted and redone. I know something about how disruptive that is to your life! I so admire you guys doing all of that work. Our house had a hard life before we bought it so there was no redeeming the el cheap cabinets we originally had.

Well last week was a happening week. I did finish my course, took a job (freelance for now - likely will go full time) as a national music critic for the Washington Times Newspaper and then signed a freelance contract a s regular contributor to USA Today. Suffice to say things have been crazy busy for work! And that's a positive. candidly, I'm on cloud nine for TWT. It's one of my favorite papers so Im delighted to join them.

BTw -- you guys can call me Nancy. Paul -- I had a stalker on here years ago when I first started. I won't bore you with the whole weird story but this person moved on from here about a year ago and I think I can use my real name. But Nikki is a pen name I use (No I don't write "adult" content -- sometimes when I write a lot for a magazine they want to use different by lines!) so either is fine.

GREAT to hear from you both. And yes, Betty, the fire in Sedona are awful!

xx

Hello Ladies,

Great to hear about your big birthday Betty!!

Sorry to be MIA around here lately. My wife Kathy and I have been refreshing our kitchen cabinets. 'They are about 20 years old and the finish just looked really bad. We started working on them 7 days ago and today we will be finished. We have a relatively small kitchen, but there are still 20 doors and 10 drawers and the cabinets. We used a rustoleum product and there are 4 steps to finishing it. Strip, paint, glaze and seal. It is amazing how much work there is to do. Anyway all I have to do today is hang the doors and put the drawers back in.

The graduation party is next Sunday (in 8 days) so there is still more cleaning up to do.

Hope you all have a great weekend!!

Paul

Hi Nikiki and Paul!
It is a gorgeous day here in southeastern Idaho! Sunshine makes me so happy! We had a wonderful long weekend in Montana with our daughter and her hubby. They recently bought 6+ acres on the Yellowstone River just outside Gardiner and we camped there with them for their first overnight stays. They hope to start building their home in a few months. It's so nice to be able to share in their excitement.

There was so much going on over the weekend ... horses trailing through town, BBQ and dance, HS graduation, rodeo ... plus some sightseeing in Yellowstone Park ... it was go, go, go! Our daughter coaches the cross country teams (boys and girls) at the high school and so she was involved in their send-offs. She is also an EMT and was on ambulance duty during the rodeo (thankfully the ambulance was not needed). Those are both "extra" things she does. She and her husband are both fulltime National Park Service employees in the Park. [You may be able to tell that I think she's pretty special.] ;)

We celebrated my 70th birthday there too (although my BD was on Tuesday). I can't believe I'm 70. Funny how that used to seem so old to me, and now my perspective has changed! ;)

Paul, I hope your daughter's graduation and party were great fun (or will be, if they're still coming up). Got any other fun things coming up?

Nikki, congrats on finishing up your classes. I bet you were watching that fire in the Sedona area recently. I know you love that part of the country. I haven't seen much news lately, I hope the fire is under control or out by now. Our cell phone coverage was very sketchy over the weekend and I'm still catching up now that we're home.

This coming weekend we're headed to Salt Lake City for another birthday celebration with a longtime friend of mine/ours on Friday night and then going up to Park City on Saturday night to visit with our son and his family. We'll be back home on Sunday afternoon.

Sending positive vibes to both of you for healthy, happy living as summer approaches.

Keep up the healthy choices! ;) Betty

Hi guys!

So nice to hear from both of you! Well I'm bringing up the rear today! I have a good excuse though -- my bus from NYC to DC ran late (it's a commuter bus so there aren't any stops along the way) and I didn't get home until 3 a.m.! I think I did a pretty good zombie impersonation today! I did take a nap and am trying to rally but wow -- these old bones aren't made for that kind of action anymore.

Everytime I go to NYC I feel I should like it more than I do! Funny how that works. The good news is that I always get a lot of walking in there. I walk instead of taking cabs (except at night) and it pays off a bit. Usually when I go (I've been going each Wednesday for the past month) I do a quick kettle bell work out (25 minutes) before I leave. I skipped it this week and was sort of glad because I think I would have been a mess with the extra late hour.

Paul the Fitbits are great. I had a SP tracker and loved it (and lost it!). I have an UP Band which I'm not that wild about but will likely start wearing now. My husband (he lost 100 pounds on SP when I did) does what you do -- really ramps up the exercise. he was down to 145 but it up to about 155 now (wants to get that 10 pounds off again - He's 5 foot 7 -- my height -- the doctor told him not to lose more weight -- I try not to be bitter!!! HA!).

Thanks for the kudos Betty but I really do need to lose these last pounds. Wayne (he's my husband, Paul) has done SO WELL but I obviously fall off the wagon (and eat the wagon) more than I care to admit. We have buckled down (again! Of course he never stopped)! I'm feeling pretty good with how we're doing this time (it's only been a few weeks since we went hard core again -- at least hard core for me!) so we'll see.

Betty you've had a LOT going on! I'm just beyond thrilled the surgery/recovery went so well and you are healing. Thank God. Now that you're getting stronger, you'll gradually build back up, I'm certain.

So great to hear from both of you. Any plans for the weekend? We're sticking close to home -- we have some house renovations we're doing so this is Home Depot weekend.

xxx

Hi Ladies,

Hard to believe that we've almost made it to the 4 year mark!!

I don't track my food anymore, although I did it for about 2 years. I'm down 15 pounds from when I started (185# today). I was at one point down to 170# and I'll get there again.

I found the main thing that helped me was to get active, I'm sort of a number geek, so I got a fitbit in August of 2011. Anyway went from doing about 2,500 steps a day to over 10,000 steps a day.

Oh yes and today was waffle wednesday!!

I'll try to check in more often - at least 2X a week.

Paul

Good morning Nikki and Paul!

Wow N, you are doing so great on losing weight and maintaining your loss ... 111 pounds is awesome! I'm currently just down 23 from when I started SP four years ago, and I seem to be stuck at that point! (That means I'm back up around 15 pounds from my low point on SP.) I'd really love to get that scale needle moving downward again. Alas, I am not using SP effectively these days and my exercise level is significantly decreased since my mid-March surgery. I believe I"m ready to get back into a regular (daily, I hope) exercise pattern. ;)

Paul, all that running you do is really paying off for you! Congratulations on your success in the healthy living department.

Are you guys have waffles today? Is this another waffle Wednesday? Can't believe I miss that crazy little huddle feature so! ;)

Have a fabulous day and remainder of the week! Happy Memorial Day indeed! Betty

HI Betty!!

You were sorely missed. I think you, Paul and I are the last Indians standing which is fine with me! It's quality not quantity.

Wow -- you have had some travel going on. GOOD FOR YOU!!! It sounds wonderful. I love hearing all about the activities by your kids. I have been not quite as active as they are (HA!) but working out hard. If it ever warms up here, I'm going swimming.

This is the summer of 1. going down another 20 pounds and 2. Moving into the essayist role so I'm excited and motivated (some days more than others).

Look at you healing so quickly! Now I must ask -- how does it feel? Can you tell a difference in your knees? I'm so curious to hear about it and so thrilled that you've healed so well.

As far as SP, I'm still a regular because I want to dump that extra 20 pounds I've been holding onto. I actually "lead" new classes til they're up and running on here. It's nice because the new members are SO enthusiastic and when someone does step up to "lead" when I cycle off, they are so excited.

Happy Memorial Day and safe travels! N.

Hello team mates!
I've had lots going on lately and haven't checked in with SP for a while. We took a trip up to Montana to our daughter's home over Mother's Day weekend. For the last few years, she's been the organizer of the Park to Paradise triathlon held in Gardiner each May (this was the 35th annual event), and we go up to help her out and join in the fun. Our son won the men's solo ribbon this year and our son-in-law's team got 2nd place in the rec men's group. The weather was a little wicked (rain, snow and COLD), but it was fun. They start out boating down the Yellowstone River (kayaks, canoes, or one guy was standing on one of those surf board looking things this year) ~ seven miles; next they run up through Yankee Jim Canyon (around five miles); and the last leg is mountain biking around 19 miles on dirt (mud this year) road back into Gardiner.

We got home from that and then headed out with the local Travelin' Sam chapter on the first group campout of the year. That was our first trip with them and we had a lot of fun. The weather was much warmer and sunnier here.

We're heading back up to Montana to our daughter's house for the Memorial Day weekend. This time we're taking our camp trailer. She and her husband recently bought a few acres on the river and we're going to camp with them there. They're planning to build their home there next summer. We'll be celebrating my birthday; I'm going to be 70 next Tuesday. I can't believe how the years keep flying by!

We have plans to be out and about quite a bit this summer, so I'll be pretty hit and miss on Sparking. I'll hope to see updates from each of you when I check in.

I had my last physical therapy appointment today. My therapist says my recovery has been way ahead of most of their clients. He attributed that at least in part to my having the surgery before I got too run down. I still have stiffness and soreness. He says that will last six months to a year, but I just need to get out and build up my stamina.

Congrats on the upcoming graduation Paul. Is that your daughter who's graduating?

And way to go on getting so many classes knocked off Nancy! Glad to hear you've got good weather and life is good!

John is in the process of tearing our deck off. A contractor is supposed to be here tomorrow morning to help with the rest of the deconstruction and reconstruction. The folks who lived here before us apparently didn't keep up on the proper maintenance and there were lots of rotten places on the boards, so we're biting the bullet and replacing it.

Keep up the healthy living! ;) Betty

PAUL!!! It's so great to hear from you!! I heard from betty and she's doing well. And promises to return soon. She's on a camping trip and hasn't been "plugged in."

Wow on the HS graduation. That's wonderful! What are her plans moving ahead?

Well I've been to NYC three times now for the classes I'm taking. I must admit I'm a bit worn out but still enjoying it. Two more classes to go and then I'm done! I've been driving or taking the bus back in forth which truly is not as grim as you might imagine. Just trying to get their quick without the hassle and expense of flying.

It's cool in DC but warm enough! i hear you on the household chores Paul. I did a lot of yard work the past several weeks for the exact reason you said.

Today we're grilling -- sweet corn, veggie and cornish game hens!!!

Happy Sunday!!! Nikki

Hello Everyone,

Still getting used to not having a huddle anymore. Still a bummer.

Anyway, been working on some projects around the house. Painting kitchen and bathroom. Putting up a retaining wall in the back yard. Getting stuff done before it gets too hot!!

Gracie graduates from high school in a couple of weeks and getting the house ready for a graduation party.

Hope all is well.

Happy Saturday!!

It's a gorgeous day here in DC and Wayne and I are taking it easy. We had breakfast on the deck, which was lovely. He's in getting things ready so we can grill out today. I'm so happy spring has finally sprung.

Boy, this travel stuff has wreaked havoc on my SP activity. I can't allow that to happen! I just went through and filled in how much I ate this week (scary) and my exercise. I've got to shoot for more moderation as I move ahead. I am falling into the "eat like a pig, then exercise like a crazy woman" mode. That's bad.

NYC has been a really positive experience. For the first time, I rode one of the commuter buses they have that run about 10 times a day straight from NYC to DC and back. It wasn't bad and the price can't be beat -- $15 each way!

The course I'm taking is very intense but hopefully I will get some decent results i.e. publication in a big magazine or paper. All fingers crossed.

So any plans with Memorial Day? Wayne's mom was going to come here but decided not to do so. She just had eye surgery so that's probably a good call. We do have plans to kayak in Maryland (long story) over July 4th! I can't even believe it's summer now! Heck our community pool opens next week!!!

So how about you? How's everything??? Do tell! Love, N.

Hi guys! Well the good news -- Work is going wonderfully. And it's spring! The bad news is that I feel like I've been running a marathon! The trips to NYC -- even t hough it's only four hours each way are grueling. But it's gonna be worth it. Things are starting to really take shape.

So tell me how you are??? Dying to know! xx

Hey guys,

Wow I go away for a few days and everything has changed!!! Miss the huddle too but I don't think it was that popular with other groups (you'd think I'd know being the "leader" but --

Anyway, sorry to disappear on you. Lots of great things happening which means I have been in NYC a LOT. I have been taking public transportation (big MegaBus) which is exhausting but so worth it.

I PROMISE to write tomorrow. I'm back honest! xx

Well, this seems to have fizzled out. The huddle change must have done us in.

Reminds me of the old saying: If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Good evening Paul!
Nice to hear from you! I see you added me as a friend and I added you just now. I'm sure Nikki will be checking back in soon. She had a trip to NY and has had lots going on.

Hey Nikki, hope you had a great trip and are safely back home. How was your weekend?

John and I went out our our first camping trip of the season over the weekend. We just went to a State park not too far from here. Two other couples were there with us. We had a nice weekend. The weather cooperated nicely! I road a few miles on my bicycle. That the first time on the bike (other than an exercise bike) since my surgery. Made me a little nervous, but everything went great.

I'm ready to call it a day but wanted to check in before heading to bed.

Let's get this week off to a good start! Goodnight! Betty

Good morning NPD!
Looks like they've done away with the huddle. That's fine with me except I guess that means we'll lose contact with Paul. Maybe he'll post something on the team board (or whatever that was).

Hope you're having a lovely day in NY. It is a gorgeous day here. The weather is supposed to be sunny and springlike through the weekend now. ;)

My knee does not feel normal yet. It still feels sort of stiff and achy at times. It is still a little swollen. The doctor said it will take six months to a year for it to feel "normal" again, but that it should reach that point. It does feel much more stable than my old one. It's pretty stiff when I first get up each day, and feels better the more I'm out and about walking (within reason, that is). I feel like I've probably been extremely fortunate and I'm at the high end of the recovery curve on timing. I suspect that is because I didn't wait until I desperately needed the surgery. You remember I was somewhat indecisive about whether or not I was doing it too soon. At this point, I'm very happy that I went ahead with it. Another great benefit is that all the medical costs, except prescriptions, have been covered 100% between my Medicare and BC/BS Fed. I've paid around $200 on RXs. I think that is remarkable!

So, even though I'm released to do anything, I'm not really strong enough to do some things now. I just need to work on building my strength and stamina.

Well, I have a big list of things I need to get accomplished today, so I need to get busy.

Have a lovely time in NY. I'll be waiting to hear about it when you get a chance to write.

Love, Betty

Hey Ms. Healthy!

Congratulations on the terrific health report! WOW! You must be so excited that you bounced back so quickly. I am sure it does seem fast to YOU but wow -- rapid fire. I'm so very happy for you! Now I must ask -- how does your knee feel? Does it feel different in a way i.e. is it noticeable to you that it's done? Or does it feel as normal as possible? Wow.

Thanks for your nice note about my tumble. It was scary and you should see my wrists -- I never had black wrists before. I'm just so blessed that I didn't break a bone or something! Gees. It is always something.

Believe me, I'm taking flat shoes with me for my NYC trip. That's tomorrow and promises to be a busy day. I'm ready for it though. I just want to get there, get this story reported (and, of course, go to my wonderful course) and get back.

I will have the iPad with me and do my best to get on here tomorrow. I usually take my computer (it's practically glued to me! HA!) but with my wrists sore I though I'd leave it home this trip. I should be able to get on though (I hope -- if not, I'll write you on FB).

So it's pouring rain here tonight and very gusty wind. At least I know tomorrow I won't be too warm in NYC (it's colder there than here and it's only about 50 degrees here)!

I will think of you and hope you're having a wonderful day. Keep a good thought for me!

Nancy xxx

Hi NPD!
The doctor was very pleased with my progress. I can do anything I want to now ... as soon as my leg feels strong enough. That means I need to be out and about and building strength. WooHoo!

Hope you're having a lovely day!

:) Betty

Good evening Nancy!
Your fall sounds scary! I've had similar things happen and I know how shook up and bruised you feel. My last big fall was after the Thursday night street dance at the Red Ants Pants MF last year. We were rushing to catch a bus back to the campground and I went down hard. I was carrying two of those fold up lawn chairs in bags and landed on one right across my chest. My left boob was black and blue for several days ... I'd never had a bruise there before!

Your NY trip sounds interesting. You sure interact with lots of big-name performers. I'd be too tongue tied to interview them. I'm happier to admire celebs from afar (if they behave admirably that is.) ;) Congrats on your professional accomplishments!

I have my six-week checkup with the surgeon tomorrow. My PT folks say he'll be very pleased with my progress. I do feel very fortunate that I'm bouncing back so well.

Well, just thought I'd check in right quick before bed time. The hours just seem to fly by each day and I look forward to crawling into bed each night.

Good to hear from you too BTW. Have a lovely day tomorrow! Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

It's always such a treat to hear from you! So glad all is going well there. Again, I think of you so often and thank God the recovery is coming along nicely. It sure sounds like you're doing quite a bit -- hooray!

I'm embarrassed to tell you we haven't put the outdoor furniture together yet. Wayne really wanted to do so but it was so rainy I asked him to wait until this coming weekend. He was also pretty burnt out from work so I was glad he had R&R.

Did I mention to you that I took quite a tumble the other day. Silly me, it was right on a cobblestone sidewalk (of which there are many here). I was hurrying (as usual) and saw my whole foot twist, then fell in slow motion. Thank God I didn't break anything though I'm fairly sure one of my wrists is a bit sprained. They are both all black and blue (and sore!). Really though Im so lucky that it wasn't much worse.

Believe it or not, I go back to NYC this week. I'll be there Wednesday for my course and then will stay over because I'm doing an interview with Jon Bon Jovi on Thursday. Should be interesting. It worked out well that I'll be in that area anyway so fate was with me on that.

All is well weather wise here in DC. It's a bit chilly/rainy but it is spring! And when it rains my allergies don't flare up so I'm all for that.

Thinking of you and sending all of my best thoughts your way.

Love, N.

Hi Nancy!
Hope you got to use your new outdoor furniture and the rain stayed away. New deck furniture would be lovely ... ours must be over 10 years old. The cushions are getting pretty bedraggled! We're working on getting a new deck this year though, so new furniture will have to wait. :)

Sorry to hear you fell. It is so disconcerting when it happens. Hope you're healing nicely!

Our weather was nicer today. At least the sun was shining and the skies were blue. The temps were a little on the low side, but we're supposed to be in the 70s by the end of the week. Next weekend is supposed to be great weather which is good news for us because we've got a short camping trip planned with friends. I am so looking forward to that!

I went for a short walk with John and our friend Sandra (and our dogs) today on a trail that gently climbs. We didn't go very far, but it felt good to be back out on a trail. My knee was a little stiff by the time we got back down to the car, but I'm feeling good now.

Well, it's about bed time... I'm late checking in here today. I don't know where the time goes!

Hope you had a good weekend. Goodnight! Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

It's a sunny day in DC but I don't think it will stay this way. Wayne and I just got new outdoor furniture (naturally) and we're waiting to put it outside til tomorrow. I'd like it to be "rain free" at least one day!

All fingers crossed your knee straightens out soon. I was a bit under the weather this week (various minor allergies and so forth) and then took a tumble! I'm fine except for two very sore palms and a skinned knee. GEES -- I feel like my warranty has expired!

Hope you have a lovely weekend! xx

Good morning Nancy!
Looks like we'll be running errands in the rain today. Better weather is in the forecast though, we're supposed to have sunshine next weekend. Yippee!

My knee seems to be a bit of a weather predictor these days; it's a little achy this morning. I hope that goes away (the weather sensitivity) when the knee heals completely.

Have a lovely day!

Hi Nancy!
I'm fine ... just sluggish this week. We've had lots going on too, so I haven't spent much time on the computer. Sorry to leave you hanging like that!

Your NY trip sounds like a long day! Glad you enjoyed it! I've never been to NY, but plan to get there one of these days. ;) As you may recall, we had been planning to make a trip back there this fall, but we had some other closer-to-home fall trips come up that sounded fun, so we postponed the New England adventure.

I'm envious of your beautiful weather. We've got gray skies and chilly temps. It's amazing to me how much more upbeat I feel when the sun is shining!

Some friends of ours bought a new little travel trailer and we're planning to head out for a couple of nights next weekend to a nearby State park for our first camp out of the season. You know, our trailer has all the comforts of home, so it's not a rugged experience (thank God!). The weekend after that we're heading up to Montana for the weekend with our kids ... it's time for the annual Park to Paradise triathlon our daughter has been chairing for years. We go up to help out. It's always fun and that has us there for Mother's Day. ;)

My therapy is still going strong. I've got the leg motion I need (extension and flex), now I'm working on building strength and balance. I've been going three times a week. I have nine sessions left ... I may cut back to two a week after next week to stretch them out a little further.

Well, that's about all the excitement from out West. ;) Good to hear from you. I'll try to get my act together and be more faithful in corresponding.

Have a lovely weekend. It's pizza night isn't it. Maybe I'll suggest to John we have some pizza tonight. I'm still not drinking alcohol, but I might break down and have a beer. I've got some gluten free Angry Orchard apple beer (or cider?). That would probably taste good with pizza. ;) [Sometimes it seems my life revolves around food ... I need to strengthen my resolve again!]

Cheers! Betty

Hi Betty!

I figured you were pretty exhausted after your company visit. So glad you had a nice time and then you took some R&R just for you.

NYC was terrific. We left the house about 7: a.m. and were there before noon. I found a place to park in NJ (a new transportation center) and we took the train into the city. VERY easy. We spent the day (lunch with a friend, the course) and then were home by about 11:30 p.m. Worked out so well!

I had such a great session that I'm thinking about taking a 5-week course (one night a week) there. I really don't want to drive each time though and the train is expensive. I MAY do the mega bus that runs between DC and NYC several times a day. Still deciding everything! So yes, I'm keeping busy.

The lady (or rather two designated men) did come get the treadmill. That means everything I wanted to get rid of is gone except the hot tub and that goes this weekend. So yes, the new set up is great too (though I'm writing this while sitting in a chair! I have to take breaks from the treadmill just because it is a LOT of walking -- but I hope to build my endurance!

Nothing new here except it's wonderful weather. Glad you're doing so well! Write more when you can. xx

Hi NPD!
As you may have noticed, I took a few days off. We really enjoyed having our daughter and her husband here over the weekend, and I expended all my energy visiting with them. I'm recovering nicely, but my energy level is not very high.

We had beautiful weather most of the weekend and yesterday, but a front is moving through today. No blue skies and sunshine, darn it! I'm sure they will return eventually. Our trees are about to burst into bloom and/or put on their leaves. It is kind of chilly today though. ;(

We had a contractor out yesterday to help us put together plans for re-doing our deck. John wants to help with a lot of the work, but it is a pretty big undertaking. Money, money, money. We keep doing our part to stimulate the economy!

Hope your latest NY trip was lots of fun. Did the lady come get your old treadmill? Are you loving your new set up?

I think it's time for another cup of coffee and then I must do something productive! Have a lovely day! Love, Betty

Hi Betty,

Oh, no, the NYC trip is just for a writing seminar. I can't even recall what the heck assignment I was talking about last week (memory is totally gone!). But all's well here :) Thanks so much for asking!

By the time you read this, your family will have arrived. Knowing you, you have all of the cleaning done. I hope all of you have a wonderful time! I'm sure you will. And I hope both you and John get some well deserved down time.

Gees on cleaning. I feel like I'm mile behind on that due to the lawn stuff and office organization. (Gees, this home ownership is fun, right?). I'm hoping that I can get some done tomorrow!

Believe it or not, I've just started tracking my time (there's a great app on the iPhone) to see where I can improve. I often feel as if I'm running all over the place and not getting much accomplished. Since I'm no spring chicken anymore (God knows) I want to make the most of the years I have left to write! So anyway, that should yield some interesting results.

Good news -- tomorrow a lady will come to take my old treadmill away. I listed it on a site called Freecycle and had quite a response! I don't care about money for it -- it's really not worth anything-- I just don't want to pay to have it moved. Well I had at least a dozen responses (I ended the ad at that point!) and have a "winner." And if she shows up and doesn't want it I have other folks who do! So it's a win-win.

I'm thrilled to hear your PT is going well. Excellent! As far as the one year recovery, I guess I'm not surprised. Heck, when you snap an Achille's Tendon (something I have learned about lately!) that takes at least six months to heal. And that's nothing compared to a knee replacement!! I know it's disappointing that it's slow but you will get there and feel great!

Well off to bed with me. Thinking of you and looking forward to your next message! N.

Good afternoon N!
Good for you on having such a productive four days! It must feel great to get so much accomplished.

I'm working at getting some cleaning done today. Our daughter and son-in-law will be coming on Thursday evening and staying through Sunday ... so it's time to do some cleaning. ;) John has really done a good job of covering lots of bases for the last month, but he has so many projects going that he always on the go and can only spread himself so thin.

My physical therapist continues to be pleased with my progress and keeps adding new exercises at each session. Even though I'm ahead of schedule and doing very well, he says it may take up to a year to get to the point where the new knee feels natural.

Glad the NY trip worked out. I assume it's the one you were hoping for last week. Enjoy your travels and your seminar. ;)

I think it's time to tackle the floors. I've stared at them long enough, guess they're not going to clean themselves!

Have a wonderful Easter. Hope your weather returns to spring! ;) Betty

Hi Betty,

Sincere apologies for disappearing on you. I honesty have been just so busy, even Wayne can't believe it. I

don't think I've ever had such a productive four-day stretch in my life. Getting the treadmill desk. spending HOURS cleaning every nook and cranny of my office (including sorting and labeling everything), doing the lawn, selling our hot tub, selling my old desk & our outdoor furniture, getting new outdoor furniture, dinner with friends -- It has been amazing. Yes, tons of work but wow -- the feeling of accomplishment can't be beat.

All is fine with my client. They still want me to work for them -- they think that guy is a jerk - and are paying me for his project anyway! I haven't even thought about him in days so yes, it's all good :)

So happy to hear you 're making this speedy recovery! GOOD for you. I am sure you went into the whole surgery with trepidation -- I sure would have -- now you're likely so glad that it is getting better and better. I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that.

Well this has been a gorgeous day here too. Would you believe it got so warm yesterday, we almost put the a/c on??? And guess what -- they predict snow late Tuesday night. Craziness.

I will be around thru Friday, then I'm back to NYC for another seminar. Wayne is going with me this time (to NYC) so it'll be nice to have his company not to mention a second driver.

Can't wait to hear all of your news. And aren't you glad the taxes are done! Whew -- another thing off your plate.

xxx

Hi Nancy!
Glad to hear you bailed on the difficult client! Life is too short to deal with some of the folks we bump into along the way! I feel sorry for people who feel trapped into accepting abusive behavior by circumstances they can't change. Thank goodness your freelance status, confidence, and supportive husband and friends give you the freedom/courage to say enough's enough!

Thanks for all your encouraging words. I do feel so fortunate to be doing so well with my recovery. My leg is sore and achy at times but really not too bad. It does still feel pretty stiff, probably from being swollen some. All in all, I think I've had a pretty easy time of it. I'm hoping to eventually have my left leg feel as natural as my right leg does. (Guess it doesn't hurt to hope LOL!)

Our CPA has our taxes ready for review and then submittal. Our CPA is one of my two best high school girlfriends and she is so good at her work! She has given us some good financial planning ideas over the last year and everything has come together just as she said it would. Looks like we owe the feds $18 and have $83 coming back from the state. I'm really impressed that she got us that close to the mark on our withholdings!

It is such a pretty day here today. The sun is shining and the promise of spring is in the air. I'm happy to be getting out of the house for a while.

Enjoy that new desk. It sounds really cool! I'm about recuperated to the point that I'm ready to "do something" to try to get some more pounds off.

Have a lovely day! Love, Betty

Hi Betty,

You are such a lovely and dear friend. Thanks for asking about yesterday. I had a doctor who I was doing a project for at Hopkins just putting me through hell. I'm fine but it was very upsetting in the moment. The good news for me is since I'm freelance I can just dump rotten clients. That was actually a project Terry and I were doing together and she agreed-- BAIL. So we did.

Anyway -- onto important matters. I am SO HAPPY to hear how well you're doing. You are such the over achiever :) xxx HOORAY!!!

Now I must ask how your knee feels. Is it sore? Tender? Please do tell. I think so much of you and am sending good karma your way.

Last night Wayne and I went and bought a treadmill desk from a fellow selling it on Craigs List. I got it for my office and am just thrilled (we will set it up on Saturday). It's smaller than a "regular" treadmill and lower too. Basically it's built to run at low rates of speed -- 1 mph -- and has a desk that goes over it with monitors and so forth. It is a world of difference from my old one (which I'm still grateful to have had!)

My old one lurches a bit so I always feel like I have to hold on for dear life or I will fall! (gees -- typical me). This new one is VERY sturdy. We'll see, now, if I can use it to write. Suffice to say I'm glad I didn't pay for a new one just in case (we paid $400 for this three year old one -- the new ones are $1500 to $2000!)

Anyway, all's well here. Thinking of you and sending all good thoughts your way.

Love, Nancy

Good morning Nancy!
Did you have a rough day yesterday? You seem a little down on FB. Hope things turn around and you have a great day today!

It's a busy day for me. Several errands will keep me away from home for several hours. It feels good to be able to get out and about!

TIme to get ready now! Take care ... better days are coming! ;) Betty

Hi Nancy!
I got off to a great start at the physical therapist's office today. He was surprised at how much flexing and extension of my leg I have reached already. My warm up was on a stationary bike. He said most folks start at an 11 and can't get the pedals all the way around. I was at a 6 and pedaling fine for 10 minutes. (I think those numbers must be inches. He kept moving the seat closer to the handlebars/pedals for the measurement.) I attribute my progress to (1) lots of folks have been praying for me, (2) I did lots of walking and recumbent biking in preparation for the surgery, and (3) that CPM machine really got my leg moving starting pretty soon after surgery.. It is very gratifying to feel like I'm on the right track and have prospects for really good flexibility!

I see from FB that you're going to shop for a treadmill desk. That's exciting! I know you've been using the one your hubby rigged up for you. I'll be interested in hearing what the new one like. Is an "official" treadmill desk a lot different than what you've been using? Man, you must have energy to spare the way you keep moving! I can't see me working on a treadmill; it's like the old "can't walk and chew gum" thing. I have trouble even trying to read while I'm exercising. I think a big part of that is holding the book still though ....

I thought of Terry last night as we watched the UConn/Kentucky game. I bet she was for Kentucky. I don't really follow men's s basketball, but I was rooting for UConn since the UConn women are playing Notre Dame for the women's national championship. I thought it would be cool for the men and women from the same school to be national champions. (But, that's sort of like picking a team because you like the color of their uniforms, isn't). LOL

Well, I need to get busy. Seems like I've frittered most of this day away. John has gone to take Chaco for a walk. He'll take me for a walk later. I did't want to tackle a steep trail yet!

Have a good day! Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

Well this trip to NYC certainly got me in gear. I've been walking on the treadmill while writing (if this message ends suddenly, you'll know why!), did a round of kettle bells, have been writing an essay and just turned in a paying assignment. Woo hoo!

I'm so glad you are out and about today. A mile in 22 minutes is nothing to scoff at. I think that sounds fantastic. Believe me, I go so slowly on the treadmill (when I'm working) I'm sure it's about one mile an hour!

It's raining here today but warm. I'm just about ready to take some time and switch my spring clothes to the closet and pack the winter wools away. I hate to be too early though -- this weather has been unpredictable at best!

BTW -- Our friend Terry is a big basketball enthusiast too. Even if she's not on here, you should reach out to her. She'd love it.

My new SP class is doing well. I love that they're all so enthusiastic. There are (get this) 12,000 of them!) We'll see how many are there after four years, right? I hope they do well though. They are such sweet people!

Write more when you can. Love, N.

Hi again ... it's me!

I've got Lyle singing "Cute as a Bug" in the background as I start chatting today. We got out walking again earlier and went a little over a mile. That took 22 minutes; which isn't too bad all things considered. Guess I'll start competing with myself to see how much I can improve. There's nothing like getting some exercise outdoors and the listening to some good music to get me in a good mood!

John's downstairs working but plans to come up and make us some burritos and watch the women's final four basketball games with me. We may throw in a wild game of Cribbage too. Life in the fast lane at the Siglers!

I've got my fingers crossed that what you're hoping might happen this week does happen BTW. (It is so hard to type with crossed fingers, but I don't want to jinx anything either!) ;)

I need to go do some "kicking" on the CPM machine before the good times roll. They're coming to pick the machine up tomorrow, so I need one last session on it.

Hope you've had a good weekend! Until next time, love, Betty

Hi Betty!

You are so much fun! I love hearing about the Red Pants Festival. I admire that you're so enthusiastic about the camping. I really just can't get into that stuff but I so wish I could. It seems so cool!

I had a fantastic time in NYC mostly because everyone was so open, sharing advice and tips on ways to get assignments for the different publications. It's exciting. Believe it or not, I MAY be going back to NYC this week, though I doubt it. I'm not talking about it too much or fear of jinxing it but will let you know if it does come through.

That's wonderful news that you were able to get out for a bit. Just the fresh air had to be exhilarating. It's warm here (high 60s) but my seasonal allergies have kicked in AGAIN so I won't be outside very much.

It was a bit disheartening to realize my doctor (who we both adore) had prescribed me an antibiotic that has a major side effect of rupturing tendons! I'm sure you remember the troubles I've had with my right tendon (he didn't, clearly). Fortunately I realized before I took it but YIKES -- makes you think!

Hope your Sunday is terrific. I look so forward to hearing more. Love, N.

Good afternoon N!
Your NY trip sounds like it was really fun. You have been traveling a lot lately, so I understand how nice it must feel to get to settle in at home for a while (with that guy you're so crazy about LOL).

I got out with John and Chaco for a walk in the park early this afternoon. What a exhilarating experience that was. We just went a little less than a mile, but it felt so good to be outdoors and able to walk! We picked a good time to go, it seems. It is sleeting outside now. I wouldn't have been too good a hurrying back to the car. ;)

We have a pork tenderloin cooking in the crock pot. I saw a recipe I wanted to try, so I "supervised" John as he did all the prep work and got it going. He got a cantaloup yesterday that I need to get sliced. I told him I wondered what a cantaloup he sliced would look like ... we both got a chuckle out of that.

Well, I need to get busy. It's amazing how much more lively I feel after getting out for that walk. Staying in the house too long can be depressing!

I'm looking forward to streaming the lineup announcement for this year's Red Ant Pants Music Festival this evening. As you may recall, we've gone to that the last two years (end of July) and we really enjoy it. We missed the first one (that your buddy Lyle Lovett headlined) darn it, but we've made it a "must do" since then. Camping out in a cow pasture with our kids (and several thousand more folks) is a hoot!

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend. We'll chat again soon.

:) Love, Betty

Hi Betty,

NYC was terrific. I got to meet my writing coach, go to a party at a very posh Greenwich Village home, and visit with my friend. Who could ask for more? I must admit I'm more than a bit tired these days. All of this travel is really catching up with me but I'm in DC now for at least a month.

As far as clothes -- I had the same thoughts! I didn't want look like I was trying too hard so I wore jeans, booties (low leather ones) and a tunic shirt that swings. Plus pretty jewelry. Seemed to fit (you know the watchword there is still black clothes!)

I can't tell you how pleased I am to hear about your terrific doctor's appointment. That is wonderful. And, as I think I mentioned, I know PT will be tough but I'm sure it will be effective!! All good thoughts sent your way.

I don't blame you a bit for not going bowling. I would rather (literally) sit it out at home, too. At least you're comfortable, can watch TV or read or whatever you feel like doing.

Thinking of you this lovely Saturday and hope you're even better than you were yesterday (and hope tomorrow's better too!)

Much love, N.

Hi N!
The doctor's office moved my appointment up a day, and so I've had my two week checkup. The PA was very pleased with my progress ... said I am ahead of schedule. That is very gratifying, of course. I've got an appointment to start physical therapy next week. Things are looking up ... and the sun is shining too! WooHoo!

I saw a post earlier that you were halfway home from NY. I hope you had a fabulous time there. That sounded like a really fun outing ... the book reading and party. Did you get a new outfit to wear? (Does that age me ... do people still get new outfits or is there some snazzy new lingo for buying clothes?)

John has been off at bowling league all afternoon. He should be home soon. I may go with him next week to watch. I didn't think I'd feel like sitting and watching three hours today though. The doc says I can start walking (on safe surfaces, like flat trails) and do what I feel like doing. I think my energy level will be very low at first, but I'm eager to get out and do a little walking. I think the way you build up stamina is to start slow and keep building.

And yes, BTW, I think you and I are very lucky to have such loving and supportive husbands. The nurse even told me I was lucky at the doc's office this morning. That's sort of sad. I wonder why everyone isn't nicer to their spouse since it makes life so much more pleasant. Not that we haven't ever had some rough times over the years, but we haven't made a habit of it. ;)

Hope you have a lovely evening. I want to hear all about your NY experience.

Take care! ;) Betty

Hi Betty!

Aren't we lucky to have these husbands! Good for John taking care of you.

I know EXACTLY what you mean about recuperating. I know when Wayne had the spine surgery and was housebound for a few months, he thought he would go crazy. Reading and the radio -- as much as we all enjoy those outlets -- gets a bit stale after a while.

Well believe it or not, I'm off to NYC tomorrow. My friend Maxine and I are going to a book reading by my writing coach. Then we're going to a private party with a bunch of big name writers (I hope I don't make an idiot of myself! HA! Such confidence!)

Lucky me, Maxine is a NYC native. She lives right outside the city so I'll drive to her house. Then she'll drive us into NYC. She has a 7 year old daughter (Maxine is an older mom -- my age) but she'll stay at Maxine's parents for the night. That will be super all the way around.

It is warm here today. I can't believe a few days ago I was in a blizzard (only 350 miles from here!) and it's warm here. NYC will be warm too (It's ALWAYS warm there. It's like a different country or something!)

You know I will be thinking about you SO MUCH Friday. All prayers sent your way. And rehab will be rugged but in a way it'll be great. I bet you'll learn so much about how to keep your knee healthy moving ahead. I know this is comparing apples to oranges, but Wayne's rehab was exacting but -- well, would you believe we bough the same bow flex his therapist had and he STILL does those exercises? It's really made all the difference in his continued recovery (if you can call it that).

Much love, Nancy

Good evening Nancy!
Glad you made it through all that snow and are safely back home. I saw the FB photo of Wayne shoveling your DC snow. Hope his back held up under all that strain! ;)

We had snow here again on Sunday. Big beautiful snowflakes. It covered the ground nicely, but has all melted away again I think. Being confined to quarters is becoming a bit of a drag!

It has been two weeks since my surgery now and I am feeling stronger each day. John has really been super about taking care of me ... always comes running when I call. He bought me a lovely purple cane today. I'm really ready to put the walker in storage!
I have an appointment Friday morning with the surgeon's nurse to change the dressing, etc. I think I'll be free to roam around more after that. I'll be starting rehab training next week. I anticipate that may be a little rugged. I want to be all the flexibility possible out of my knee/leg. That will be painful at first I'm sure. I can do it though!

Well, it's bed time. Just thought I'd check in.

Love, Betty

Hey girlfriend -- I will write more tomorrow -- honest. The weekend was great but boy -- we hit incredible snow in NY State. I grew up there and have never seen it that bad before. Seriously.

How are you FEELING??? Please -- do tell.

Hi Nancy!
I hope you are having a fabulous visit with your dear friends in NY and that the road trip wasn't too stressful. Come on spring, do your thing! Oh, except for your allergy thing. emoticon I felt a little punk today. I think I may have felt so good yesterday that I overdid (trying to impress Adam with how well I'm recuperating). My home health nurse wanted me to see my regular doctor and he got me in for an appt this afternoon. (That was my first time out of the house in over a week.) My doctor said he didn't think there was anything going on to worry about.. My BP was up to 150 over 68, but he said that kind of spike temporarily is nothing to worry about. (I'm on BP meds and it's usually down in the 120s). He did think my allergies were probably causing my other symptoms (lightheadedness and dry eyes and tiredness).

I do feel a lot better/energetic tonight. I think a day of more rest was good for me.

So, it's getting late but i thought I'd check in right quick. Have fun, fun, fun.

Love, Betty

Hi Betty! Whew -- it is almost 10 p.m. here and I haven't eaten dinner yet. One of those days.

I spent most of the day in Baltimore meeting with doctors at Johns Hopkins for potential stories I'm doing. It was just fascinating. Talk about the smart kids group! Wow.

Speaking of medicine -- wow -- it sounds like you are making amazing progress. How is the pain? Is it any less? You certainly have the best attitude! I'm so proud of you.

We had some snow yesterday but nothing to speak of (thank goodness). It was clear enough today and I could drive the Smart Car to Baltimore -- I prefer to do that for all kinds of reasons especially to save on gas!

Oh your friends are DOLLS to bring you that lovely dinner. How nice. What a sweet thing to do.

I will admit I am excited about seeing our friends but also, just having Wayne to myself for a few hours in the car (it's about an 8 hour trip -- we'll drive halfway tomorrow night and then the rest of the way Friday, arriving in time for lunch). Sometimes we get so busy, it's insane. I feel like we see each other when we work out, talk about the mail and that's it!

Boy -- remember when we were kids and thought days were SO long!

Thinking of you and apologies for writing so late in the day. Much love, N.

Hi Nancy!
Here it is nearly bedtime and I'm just now getting around to Sparking. I have had a pretty productive day (if you can be productive lying around) ... I did all my physical therapy homework and have spent over 5 hours on the CPM machine. I'm learning to walk again, or getting strong enough to walk in better form. Hope the therapist will be happy with my progress when he comes tomorrow.

You've got a busy schedule for the rest of this week! I hope the weather clears up enough to make your road trip unstressful. It was beautiful here today, but they're saying we could have some snow in the next couple of days.

Hope you have a really fun visit with your friends this weekend. Some friends of ours brought us dinner tonight (a chicken/broccoli casserole with cranberry sauce; yummy green salad; and chocolate cookies). I've been really touched by all the nice gestures from a variety of friends since my surgery. Makes me want to be more aware and helpful to others in similar situations.

Well, I'm ready to call it a day. Travel safely! Thank you for being my friend (sing along now!) ... ;) Love, Betty

Greetings from VERY cold (for here!) DC, where snow is predicted tonight!

So glad you're on the mend girlfriend. Thank goodness that things are going well. You'll be out enjoying the nice weather before you know it. I just want to tell you again how very brave you are! I am so proud of you going and having this done -- and being so positive about all aspects. You're an amazing woman and I'm so lucky to have you as a friend.

All is well here. I'm a bit crazy this week because I go to Baltimore (for work) on Wednesday, then we leave for upstate NY (Rochester) on Thursday to visit our friends (I think I mentioned that). We return Sunday and then Tuesday I head to NYC for a reading that night (that is the one with my writing coach). That's a lot of travel for me these days (lazy as ever here!).

The new class is going well so far. I have the class that started Sunday and will be "filled" by Saturday. So far they're all really sweet, excited, nervous, upbeat. I just hope they have a wonderful experience. I'm trying my best to respond to their posts! Very nice and fulfilling.

Hope you had a wonderful HAPPY HOUR!!! Love that! I will not be having alcohol this coming weekend (and our friends are major wine drinkers) due to my medicine, so I am your soul mate on that! The good news is that after 5 days of agony (WITH the medication!!!)I awoke this morning to a much less painful sinus! Here's hoping that continues.

Thinking of you and look forward to your next post. Love, N.

Hi Nancy!
It's a beautiful day here and supposed to be beautiful and in the 60s tomorrow. I'm going to be eager to get back on my feet so I can enjoy this gorgeous weather!

I've had my home health care nurse and my physical therapist in today and they both say I'm progressing well. It's time to get into a little more painful exercises to keep scar tissue from forming and stiffening my knee, so I'll need to practice some tough love on myself!

Hope your new team is off to a good start. You did a great job of pulling our team together and I'm sure you'll be a big help to this new team if they are motivated enough to get involved. It is nice of you to pay it forward like that!

Well, the evening news is on so I'm ready to go in and watch with John. This is our happy hour. I'm limiting myself to fake happy hour drinks (no alcohol) and will continue to do so as long as I'm on the blood thinners. This is a sober Betty chatting with you. LOL

Are you feeling better? Hang in there, better days are coming!

Love! Betty

Good afternoon N!
Sorry to hear it's cold again there. It is in the upper 50s here this afternoon. Just looking out my windows at the blue skies and sunshine, it appears to be warmer than that. I haven't been out of the house since I got home from the hospital Wednesday afternoon. I don't have any plans to go out until my appointment with the doctor's nurse on April 4. If the weather turns really nice (say, in the 70s) before then, I wouldn't mind sitting out on our deck. John would have to bring the deck chairs up from storage, of course. He's hoping to start on a deck remodeling job when it gets warm, and if that happens, guess I'll just be stuck indoors for a while.

I am feeling a little house-bound already. But, when I stand up and start to move, I realize I don't want to go far! Our friend Sandra is leaving for Chacala, Mexico, this Thursday. Her brother has an inn there and she's meeting up with some other family members there for 10 days. Doesn't that sound delightful! John and I visited there in February of 2010. Very pleasant place on the west coast of Mexico (not out on the Baja).

Well, once again I find myself too drowsy to continue here. My energy level must be at zero! Good to hear from you. Hope you're feeling better soon. Think I'll take a stroll around the house (inside) with my adorable walker. ;(

Take care! Love, Betty

Hi Betty,

You know I often think about how single people get through these things too -- or at least people without roommates, etc. Even going for some exams, they want someone to drive you and WAIT --- so that rules out a taxi. Thank God you have John and that wonderfully supportive family.

Well the sinus stuff is pretty awful today. I feel like a real wimp whining about it. I think the mistake today was I had the windows open (it's in the 70s out) and that let allergens in. We closed them and I'm a bit better -- or at least can function. I also took a nap just to get away from the pain a bit (again, I feel like a fool saying that with all you're going thru!)

We go to upstate NY next weekend to see our best friends. We'll leave Thursday night, stop after 3-4 hours and then drive the rest of the way Friday so we can have lunch with them. It's my friend's birthday and she's had a rough year so we're going for moral support.

So tomorrow I start a new SP TEAM! The folks here asked if I'm lead a class until the class gets going and someone from their team can/will do it. I am ready to go with them -- have the threads set and so forth. Trying to pay it forward.

You know we had 14,000-plus people in our class when it started. You, me, Paul and Maria are about the only ones left (of course Terry but she officially came on a bit later). Wow -- makes you think. Lucky me to have you though!

Thinking of you and sending good karma (and pain relief!) your way. Love, Nancy

Hi Nancy!
I am recovering nicely, but that does mean taking it pretty easy. John has been so sweet and is taking really good care of me. I don't know how folks who live alone get through days like these. I guess they start out in assisted living because some things are just about impossible without help when you can't move your leg. I've already been able to cut back some on the pain meds. My sister-in-law called and said don't get addicted to Percocet! [Good thing she said that or I'm sure I would have decided to become an addict! LOL]

It looks like a beautiful day, but I understand it's pretty cold. We did get out on a short Spyder ride last Sunday, but I won't be doing that again for a while.

I am feeling so drowsy that I think there's a nap in my immediate future. Adam is on his way down here from Bozeman. He'll spend the night with us and then head on down to Logan (Utah) tomorrow morning for his annual yurt-to-yurt skiing trip with friends. It will be nice to visit with him.

Hope your sinus infection took your suggestion and left in the night. Hope your crazy weather has settled down too. Did you say you're headed to NY in a week or so? Is that for fun? A fun road trip sounds very appealing to me, but that's not in our immediate future. We may run down to SLC to see John's sister when she passes through there on her way to her Colorado quilting workshop. That depends on how my leg is going. Would love to zip on down and see the grandkids (and kids) in Park City if that works out.

Well, I am about falling asleep with my hand on the keyboard, so I'm going to sign off and get some rest (make that some MORE rest).

Take care and have a lovely weekend! Love, Betty

Betty!!! I'm so happy to hear from you. Terry & I were just talking about you this morning and wondering how you were doing.

As annoying as being so immobile is, I know you'll do the right thing and rest and take care of your body. Let people wait on you! The more they do the sooner you'll be back to your old hard-charging self.

How do you feel? Does it ache? Are you in pain? Gees -- I feel pretty silly now griping about my sinus with what you're going through.

Nothing really new here. It's warm and I have a window open. I hear that will all send soon.

Please get R&R -- Write when you can. Love, N.

Hi Nancy!
I got home yesterday afternoon. John is being very attentive and helpful. I'm making progress, but it's going to take a little while before I'm feeling close to par. My left knee and leg are pretty darn sore! John and Sandra are headed out walking with the dogs in a few minutes. I'll be happy to lie here icing my knee while they walk. ugh! Another friend is coming to bring food and visit a little while John and Chaco are gone.

The home health nurse came this morning and gave me a bunch of helpful advice on getting around, etc. I've got the fireplace going and I'm stretched out on the couch. I did get some pretty flowers from my son and his family earlier. They are spirit lifters!

So you have a sinus infection, eh? Seems like there's alway some little something , doesn't it! Well, my energy level is low so I'm going to finish up here for now. Better days are coming! ;)

Love, Betty

Hi Betty,

Getting those darn tax duties done always feels great, doesn't it? Wayne has ours done and so I'll mail them this week. Woo hoo - one less thing to do.

I just read a study someplace that found people who have deadlines are indeed more productive. I know that's absolutely true for me.

Would you believe that it IS still nice here today yet they're predicting 5 inches of snow starting tomorrow (Sunday) into Monday! This is some weird weather. You're right, of course, the good weather gave us quite a boost. We went to lunch with a friend who is in town from Oregon and it was fun to dress up a bit in spring clothes. I'm definitely not putting the winter stuff away yet though!

We will be heading to my hometown (Rochester NY) in two weeks and they've had some unbelievable blizzards there! I am guessing when we go there we'll be taking our "Maine clothes" as we call them complete with long underwear. That always strikes me as funny because Rochester really isn't that long of a drive from here (maybe 7 hours) and it's like a different world.

I hope you and John have a wonderful rest of Saturday. I'll look forward to hearing about your adventures whether on the Spyder or not.

Much love, N.

Hi N!
It's another gorgeous day here! We went for a lovely walk with our friend and her dog and now John is out running errands. It's getting down to crunch time on completing all those pre-surgery tasks ... the primary one of those being getting our tax paperwork off to our accountant. I just need to finish pulling everything together, do the compilation, and then put all that stuff in dropbox for her. I always seem to get more done when I have a deadline looming. ;)

I see you have another gorgeous day in DC. Doesn't that give you a boost of energy! It really lifts my spirits and make me want to get outdoors!

I'm going to jump off here now and try to finish up my paperwork so we can get out and do something fun. Maybe we can even go for a short ride on the Spyder this afternoon if the temps get a little higher. It's still in the mid 40s, and that's a little nippy for riding.

Hope you're having a fabulous day! ;) Betty

Happy Friday evening ... you've probably already had your pizza by now! It is after 7PM here, so after 9PM at your house. I have a roast in the oven and need to pull some things together and get us fed. We watched our gals play their last season game at the Big Sky tournament by streaming it through a laptop. That game started at 4PM out time, so no wonder it has gotten so late without me noticing!

I had my study group this morning, followed by a quick stop at the hospital for that followup test, and then off with John to Costco to get our snow tires off the car. Of course, the skies are looking really gray out there now!

I did get cleared for Monday's surgery. I'm to be there by 8:30 AM and the surgery is scheduled for 11AM. I'm feeling at peace and ready for it. (Hope that lasts!) ;)

Glad to see you had nice warm weather there today by your huddle comment. I'd be happy to have the snow and wind gone indefinitely!

How far are you from Mt Vernon? I think your evening there sounded like a good time. I think I told you that John and I visited Mt Vernon once about 10 years ago when I went with him to a meeting in DC. We took a boat trip down the Potomac with the group. Seems like we had dinner on the boat, but I remember eating at Mt Vernon in a dining hall sort of building ... so I may be mixing up what happened on the boat trip. Those historic sites are very interesting to me!

Well, I need to get dinner done before it's bedtime! Better run. I'll check back in tomorrow.

Enjoy your evening! Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

Boy you're not kidding on the week going by so quickly. I'm definitely trying to make the most of it though (and I know you always do!)

Lots of work and, believe it or not, some socializing for me too! I went out for a nice dinner with my friend Phyllis the other night. We just went to Uno (used to be Pizzeria Uno) but it was fine. You'll be proud to know that I stuck to my calories even though I did have a sinful dessert. Then last night Wayne and I went to Mount Vernon. They have lecture series with authors (obviously the books are always about Geo. Washington and the American Revolution). I know it sounds dull but it's really quite fun. They have a very nice buffet afterward and we always meet interesting people.

I envy your weather! Our has been in the single digits which is stunning for Washington DC. I'm hoping it warms up soon. The good news is there hasn't been any snow though the winds were up to 50 mph last night. We had the Smart Car, too, so you know we felt them when we were driving.

How was bowling? I know what you mean about the countdown to your surgery and when you can bowl again. I just am excited you'll have that surgery a memory by the time bowling starts in the fall. That will be something to really celebrate!

What a bummer about your dishwasher. I haven't had that happen but my friend did and oh, what a bummer. It's completely understandable. We're all in a rush for everything these days and that's just one of those crazy things that happens. So sorry it happened to you.

Interesting news about your allergies and how you take the pills year round. I'm thinking that may be next for me.

And hooray on the tooth. I'm thinking I need to go to my dentist again. Ever since I was there the last time one side aches. I know it's because he left part of a nerve exposed. I just don't want to lose the tooth so I'm thinking better to deal with it. Gees -- this age stuff is annoying sometimes!

Looking forward to hearing more of your news. All the best. Love, N.

Hi Nancy!
Boy, this week is zipping by! We went out for a walk with Chaco earlier, it is such a gorgeous day! The temperature is just in the 40s, but with full on sunshine it felt warmer and I took my jacket off before we got back to the car. This afternoon is bowling. I'm looking forward to that. This will be my last day of the season unless something unexpected happens. With only six, or so, weeks left, I don't anticipate being recuperated enough for bowling until the fall season arrives.

So far all my "last minute" woes have been easily handled. The dentist put a temporary filling in for me that should last until August (when we'll probably do a crown). I'm feeling great and ready to get on with things! ;)

I did somehow manage to melt a plastic spoon onto the heating element in our dishwasher (one of those large black spoons that come in kitchen utensil sets). I'm sure it started out on the top rack. Besides smelling awful, the heating element must be replaced. John has ordered the part and we'll get it installed next week. He accuses me of doing this just when he will be in charge of getting the dishes done! LOL I've made a mental note to ALWAYS wash plastic things that can possibly fall through the rack by hand in the future!

I know what you mean about allergies. I've just been taking an allergy pill every day year round for the last couple of years. I was having trouble with feeling like my ears were plugged and the pills clear that up. My doctor found a generic for Clarinex and that is what I've been taking.

Hope your weather has continued to be beautiful. I'm knocking on wood that ours will stay nicer from here on out! John is planning to get our snow tires off the Prius tomorrow.

Well, I must hop in the shower and get ready for bowling. Eager to hear how things are going for you.

Love, Betty

Hi Betty! Gees, sorry I dropped out of things like that.

I have to admit this Spring Forward thing has about done me in! I ran around like a zombie all day yesterday. Today I had to go to Baltimore to meet with some doctors at Johns Hopkins (for work). It's not a bad drive (about an hour or so) but it was just one of those trips I would have preferred not to make. Well, anyway, it's over so that's excellent! And yes, I have a lot of work through them so it was definitely worth the time!

The weather here was gorgeous today -- 70 degrees. It'll get cold again soon but spring is fighting to join us so hopefully soon.

Gees, I'm sorry to hear about the tooth!! Isn't it always something??? I hope by the time you read this that you've had that resolved. And the infection is better? Again, never rain but...

I'm just about ready for allergies to kick in. I never had allergies before I moved to the DC area. In fact, when they first started, I thought it was a tooth problem. This was years ago. My dentist told me -- and my doctor confirmed -- that I developed seasonal allergies. DC was built on a swamp so apparently it's quite common especially for folks that didn't grow up here.

Your lists sound like terrific motivators. They are something I just need to do! I already feel behind this week and it's only Tuesday! The good news is, it's only Tuesday! Tonight I'm going to dinner with my friend Phyllis but the rest of the week I will have the nose to the grindstone. I actually planned to meet her tonight because I figured the Baltimore trip would make this a wash -- and I was right.

Well, just time to do some kettle bells and get ready and go. Hope you're having a great day and I look so forward to hearing from you. Love, N.

Good morning N!
Gee, I beat the sun up this morning thanks to daylight savings time! It is just about to come over the mountain and I've been up over half an hour.

Loved hearing from you ... I started here on my Sparking this morning. I have a little routine I go through usually, but skipped that today and came straight here. ;) I'm feeling pretty good. I hope the UTI is clearing up. The funny thing about it was that I didn't feel any symptoms ... they just picked it up on my pre-op hospital lab visit. Just to throw another small monkey wrench into the works, a tooth broke yesterday. I've called the dentist's office and he'll see me at 10, at least to assess the situation. I had a big filling in the tooth and the whole back side of the tooth broke off on a piece of bacon at brunch yesterday. (That will teach me to eat bacon!) I'm guessing that I'll need a crown now. ;( It seems like several "little" medical issues are popping up and that is a little nerve wracking, but I'm trying to remain calm and just take things as they come!

I've made myself a list of household things I must get done this week counting down to next Monday. I've still got to wrap up our tax paperwork and get it to the CPA and do some cleaning, etc.

As a Lenten discipline I've decided to write 40 notes to folks (responding to Christmas cards and thanking folks for various things). I meant to start last week and do one a day during Lent, but I'm behind already! I've decided batches of them will be okay as long as I do 40. I'll have some free time starting next week. ;)

I do appreciate your encouragement. Sounds like you had a productive and relaxing weekend between your billing and cleaning and Chinese food and TV viewing. A balanced life! ;)

Well, I better jump back over to my gratitude thread and see how those folks are doing. We list five things each day that we're thankful for. Our leader starts a new thread each month.

Have a great week! Taking a deep breath and plunging forward here ... Love, Betty

Hi Betty!!!

Sorry I missed your message. I have to admit between Saturday night and Sunday night, I was pretty useless! I did a lot of little things -- sending bills to my clients, paying bills, a wee bit of cleaning, things of that nature. I was happy to see that my income this quarter seems to be fairly high. Of course first quarter is always like that. Hopefully I can set the groundwork to keep it higher than usual during the dog days of summer.

I think you'll do great with the weight during your surgery and recovery. You have all of the tools you need and you'll apply them as you can! I know you'd like to lose the 10 pounds but gees -- that's really not going to be a problem once you're back in the game. And think how terrific you're going to feel when this whole surgery thing is behind you! What a RELIEF that will be. Please remind me what they estimate as the length of recovery? I can't imagine, in a lot of ways, a better time to do this surgery/recovery. Good for you, getting through it.

Please tell me how you're feeling otherwise. Is the infection almost gone?

Nothing is really new here. It was a nice weekend. We did a lot of R&R, watched some of our favorite TV shows (we're not into Bates Motel!) and enjoyed the weather -- would you believe it was 60 degrees yesterday! It was nice to let some fresh air in!

We splurged tonight and ordered Chinese food. Believe it or not (and I'm shocked about this) I didn't go over my calories. I have 15 calories to spare (time to go wild, right!).

Tomorrow, t hough, I'll be right back to it with exercise (Sundays is always my day off) and eating right.

Hope you had a super Sunday and look so forward to your next message! xx

Good evening N!
Another day is rapidly slipping away. Other than attending the basketball game this afternoon, I'm not sure what happened to the time! The ballgame was a good one! They finished the season with a win and all the seniors played very well. It's always a little emotional on senior day; ISU gives them a nice send off. They'll actually be playing in the Big Sky tournament next weekend, but that's in North Dakota this year ... so we definitely won't be going to those games! ;)

Congrats on getting your weight back down to where you were before the temporary ban on exercise! You must be feeling really pleased with yourself ... and rightly so! I do wish you luck in keeping the weight off and stopping the yo yo madness. I am sort of resigned to always being a bit of a yo yo ... I'm just hoping to keep the string on the yo yo really short and not go too far off the deep end! I had hoped to be down to a healthy BMI by March 15 (two days before my surgery), but I've pretty well stalled out and have another 10 lbs to lose to get there. I do think I'll eventually get there and then lose 10 more to get to my target weight. I'm kind of relaxed on how soon that's going to happen; cutting myself some slack until I get past this surgery business.

John did get the Spyder out of its winter storage (in its trailer) today. It was such a beautiful day that we're both eager to get out riding ... but the weather is supposed to be colder and rainy again for a couple of days starting tomorrow. I hope we'll be able to get out for at least a short ride this week before I get into recovery mode.

Well, I wanted to check in before the day ends. We spring forward tonight, so I'll probably head to bed fairly early. (Any excuse will do, right?)

Enjoy the rest of this weekend. (Do you notice some of the bog titles that scroll by on this page? Some of them sound pretty negative and depressing to me!}

Good night! ;) Betty
