Happy Wednesday NPD!
I'm going to try this again today. I can not figure out why it wouldn't post yesterday. Since I typed in here just as I'm doing now, don't know why it appeared to the Spark mechanism to be html. I'll keep this shorter in case it doesn't work.

The temps here have dropped to barely above zero today. We hiked up a near by canyon yesterday. John wanted to go up there because of the fresh snow. Turned out the snow was covering ice underneath. We only made it up 3/4 mile and it was sort of treacherous. We would have been better off on our snow shoes! We were happy to get back to the parking lot unscathed!

Hope your week is progressing nicely and you'll have a good doc's visit tomorrow! Oh, and yes, I do have a Kindle.

Take care! Love, Betty

Good evening N!
I finally copied what I had written earlier today and posted it as a message to you on FB. For some reason when I finished typing it in here and hit "Post Message" I just kept bouncing to a different page that said "not html please" ... I really don't understand why that happened!

Sorry for the long FB message! I was too lazy to try typing all that in again. ;) B

HI Betty,

Gees, six weeks! I don't blame you for being nervous. I am confident that you'll make the right decision. If you have a chance, definitely pop Terry a note. I know she knows a few folks who've had those replacements and can fill you in a bit. Basically, they've had good success. I can relate because I have a VERY bad knee (several ugly car accidents) so will likely face that sooner rather than later as well. Sigh --

Well we're kindred spirits on pain too. My tendon was bothering me a lot today. Wayne said, rightfully so, that I should wear the brace during the day. He's right, of course, but I was working and then running up and down stairs doing laundry. Anyway, my appointment is Thursday so please keep a good thought for me.

It was a bit of a time crunch today because I had a dental appointment. I adore my dentist but he talks and talks and talks and talks. He ADORES dentistry and can't stop talking about everything -- again, fabulous guy but I felt like a cartoon character who was ready to crash through the door to break out.

Thank you so much for reading Wayne's posts. He gets such HUGE KICK out of putting those together and the comments and likes mean a lot to him (Yes, we're exciting people over here!)

I think Wayne will be snowy and bitter cold but that's fine. THEY know how to prepare for it, salt roads, etc. It's the south that is ugly, as you know. I put a link on FB about my latest adventure. I SHOULD write about all the things I've done wrong on travel i.e. showing up in Lisbon with no hotel reservations because I was too dumb to confirm my hotel. Sigh.....

So glad you had a nice time at the party and that you're visiting with a friend. Again, I can just picture it -- sounds idyllic and that's wonderful. I love to hear when good things happen to great people (YOU!).

Oh - and the 500 calorie day. Candidly, they aren't as difficult as you'd expect. I generally have egg beaters and low-calorie toast in the morning, skip lunch and then have fruit, veggies (sometimes) and a bit of tuna or something at night. Tonight I ate tons of carbs but didn't go 00 calories (two bagel thins is what did it!)

Please let me know if you want me to send you a few links to stories about the 500 calories. It sure works for me (and boy -- after eating like a lunatic all weekend, I pray it does again).

N. xxx

Good morning N!
Your message wasn't dull ... in fact, I've been thinking about your 500-calorie-days comment and wanting to ask you how you do that? Are you eating just fresh veggies those days? I know that veggies don't add up the calories very quickly. I'd be interested in giving that a try (especially today after making such a pig of myself at the party yesterday!).

I've kind of got the blahs today! The scale was UP (as it should be ... what was I thinking!). My ankle is sore (I think I was pushing a little too hard on yesterday's walk). It's overcast and spitting grainy snowflakes occasionally ... just a gray day. It's really funny to me how much the sunshine brightens my spirit as well as lighting up the day!

We did have a good time at the party BTW. It was a really congenial group of folks.

I started looking through Wayne's NOLA photos yesterday, but didn't have time to finish. I'll get back to them when I have a chance. I love how he's commented on them.

Our friend we walk with a lot has been in California the last couple of weeks, but she arrived home yesterday ... so we're going out walking with our dogs in a little while. Hope my ankle does okay. My knee replacement surgery is just six-weeks away now and I'm not excited about having the ankle on the other leg aching. Maybe I'm just getting the "am I doing the right thing" jitters.

When is your doctor's appt? Is the weather supposed to better during your trip to Maine (out of that arctic vortex shift or whatever has been going on.) How long does it take to drive from Virginia to Maine? I haven't got a clear concept of traveling time for road trips in that part of the country.

Hope you're having a good day. I'm going to get some lively music playing and perk up!

Life is good! Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

I'm so glad you mentioned the crockpot! I'm going to get mine going this week. I'm also going to get back to my two days of 500 calories per day. I just need to start feeling healthy and normal again.

You're likely at your party or getting ready to go now. I hope you have a wonderful time. It sounds like such fun.

Believe it or not, I was a bum again today! Hardly did a darn thing. At least I feel good knowing yesterday I did a lot of sorting and cleaning out of closets. Tomorrow I'll be going to The Salvation Army with a decent amount of donations. I really did over buy on clothes once I lost the weight! Crazy.

Tonight Wayne and I are hunkering down and just watching TV. I'll (finally) get going on some work. Would you believe it's only a week until we leave for our snow shoe trip in Maine??? Crazy! But I'm really looking forward to it.

Sorry -- I know this is a dull message. I'll be back to my perky self (God willing) tomorrow. Love to you, John and of course Chaco! xxx

Good afternoon N!
Busy day here! We didn't get up very early and have been moving right along ever since (well, if you can call sitting in the hot tub for our morning coffee moving). When we got home from church we had a quick bite to eat and then dashed out (in the off-and-on snow storm) for a walk with Chaco. We just got back home and I must get my artichoke dip thrown together in the crockpot so it has time to melt together (I put the cream cheese in to soften before I started here). We need to head over to the party in about an hour.

The sun is shining again now. We have a snow flurry, then it clears off and looks pretty, then back to snow. We could use a bunch of snow. I'd just as soon it would wait until we get back home though. The folks who are hosting the party live at the top of a hill and up a very steep driveway.

Your upcoming trip to Maine sounds like so much fun! I've got my fingers crossed that you get a clean bill of health from your doctor this week! I saw that you've posted photos on FB of you NO trip, but I haven't had an opportunity to get on and check them out yet. That gives me another thing to look forward to! ;)

We pay $23/day for Chaco at the Pet Lodge BTW (and more if she happens to be on any medication) ... so $10/day sounds great to me. They do take good care of her though and they always give us cute report cards at the end of her stay with photos of her playing with other dogs, etc.

Well, I better get moving again. We are looking forward to hearing the National Anthem today. I'm terrible at remembering the opera star's name who will be singing, but I bet she'll do a fabulous rendition!

Hope your writing is going well! Enjoy your day!

Love, Betty

Hi Betty,

Are you kidding/ I love your notes! You're a terrific writer and I can really see you doing the things you mention -- fabulous.

Puck & Circe, our kitties, were just fine. Our past sitter died unexpectedly (long story) and we were a bit frazzled til we found a new one. Sadly, she's a bit demanding on different things (i.e. sometimes we want the sitter to come every other day and she doesn't do that -- she insists on every day!). This time we used a new cat sitter and just adored her. She's very nice, only charges $10 a day and the kitties love her.

We go to Maine (can you believe it!) n about a week. We'll use the demanding sitter because we already contracted with her and we don't want to be jerks. But there after I think we'll return to our new lady.

How nice that you have a Super Bowl party! I love those. We are not big football watchers either but have been to a party or two that were somewhat similar to the ones you mentioned i.e. people were not all out crazy.

As you can imagine, we are both thrilled to be home. I did a bunch of sorting/cleaning today. Tomorrow I'll start in on work again. As you know, I'm writing for MSN now and that's time consuming because I'm learning what they want. I've also let some of my other writing take a back seat (which is bad) so looking forward to getting a jump start tomorrow.

No parties for us, sadly, so you enjoy yours for me too! And I know you won't go overboard. ENJOY!!

Much love, N.

Good morning N!
I'm getting to my first cup of coffee a little later than usual this morning. I had to wait two hours after taking some medication to eat (or drink) ... man, that's a long time to wait for coffee in the morning! emoticon I think I could have had coffee after an hour, but decided to wait it out. Anyway, it's tasting really good now.

The sun is blasting through my window at the moment. As it moves across the sky, there's a short period of time that I have to lower my shade because it's so bright ... I love it though!

We have another basketball game this afternoon. Then we have a Superbowl party to attend tomorrow. We're not big football fans (we watch a little, but not much), so the first year we were invited to this party we declined. Then we found out that none of these folks are footballs fanatics, they just have the game on upstairs and downstairs and folks watch if they want but continue to visit and eat and drink. So we went last year and enjoyed it enough to go again this year. The hostess makes a baked spaghetti casserole and everyone brings other goodies. I'm taking an artichoke dip and chips. No, it won't be a low cal day! I hope I can use some restraint! We each put a couple of dollars into one of those betting pool charts, and the winners contribute their winnings to the Animal Shelter (at least they did last year, and that's what I'd do if I won).

Hope you had a lovely pizza evening and enjoyed being back in your cozy home. How did your cats do while you were away? Do you have a cat-sitter or how do you take care of them when you travel? We've explored having someone come stay at our house when we travel w/o Chaco, but we always end up taking her to the Pet Lodge. They're really good with her. Most times when we're camping, she goes with us. (The big exception being when we go to the Red Ants Pants Music Festival in late July.)

Well, hope I haven't bored you with too much about me, me, me. I know you're eagerly awaiting the go-ahead from your doctor to get back to exercising. I'm glad you've got a plan to not overdo when you get the green light.

Have a lovely day! Love, Betty

Hi girlfriend!

It is, indeed, pizza night and I don't even feel guilty because I tracked calories and I'm good to go. What a difference a day makes.

Congrats on your first-place title with bowling! How fun is THAT! I know everyone says it's just the sport that counts but, heck, who doesn't like to win?

Between you and me and the fence post, I can't WAIT to start exercising again. Sure, I know it'll be hard to get back into the routine but I do feel so much healthier when I work out. And I've got a whole new plan for this, too, so I don't hurt myself again. I really am going to be strict with myself about working out in the morning and then again at night. It'll be healthier in a lot of way.

I am just about ready to take the plunge and buy a real treadmill desk! We shall see. I'm debating and think I'll wait til spring to make sure I want to spend the money (which will depend on my work, of course). I really need to buy a new computer this year too so lots pending.

It's hard to imagine in just over a week I'll be heading off to Maine for snowshoeing (again, depending on what the doctor says). Did I mention that we'll be driving there? We're both really looking forward to that. For one thing, we can avoid the hassle of the airlines! For another, we can just put what we want in the car (and not worry about bag limits, etc.)

Your bible study group sounds lovely. How great it is that you have found so many wonderful friends there who enjoy a lot of what you do! Excellent!!

Well Wayne says the pizza dude (HA! I always call him that) has arrived so I'm going down to indulge and watch The Big Bang Theory. I hope you have a lovely Friday evening & I look forward to your next note.

Much love, N.

Hi N!
So happy to hear you are safely home (and your colleagues are too)! I'm sorry the NOLA experience was less than stellar. John and I joke about bringing lousy weather wherever we go. Last time we visited in Florida they had a freeze. Our friends there said we shouldn't claim that we brought the weather or we might get lynched. LOL

League was really fun yesterday. John bowls too, but we are on different teams. I've bowled with these "guys" for years and we do lots of laughing. It is a real bonus to be in first place (and very unusual for us!). My series yesterday was a 470 which is really good for me! We had a vacancy on the team last year and a new woman joined us. She's a really good bowler and has a really fun personality. The two men are in their mid to late 80s, one is a widower and the other one's wife is on John's team. (John had a good day too, I think his series was 517.)

I always gain weight when we're traveling so I'm not surprised to hear of your 5 lbs. Those will fall right off as you get back into your routine and get back to exercising when the doctor permits. I'm happy to hear your tendon and cold are healed!

I had my Bible study group this morning. I can't believe what a great group of women they are! I am really happy to be part of the group ... we're doing a study on the book of James.
John just called and is on his way home from an appointment. We need to hustle out for a walk when he gets here. Chaco has a vet appt at 2:40 so chop, chop, chop!

I'm going to heat a quick bowl of chili. Have a lovely Friday (it's pizza night for you, right?). Enjoy! XO Betty

HI Betty,

I am BACK and so thrilled to be here you have no idea. The trip was quite grim. The people were very nice -- both for my work and the hotel -- but there was a lot that was pretty -- well -- not awful but....The hotel was FREEZING because the boilers couldn't keep up with the cold, the roads were a mess so you couldn't really get a taxi, many restaurants/stores were closed.

It was a happy accident that we had booked our flight for Thursday. We were able to get out with NO PROBLEM at all. Others I saw at the airport were obviously not that fortunate.

Thank you so much for your good thoughts about my colleagues. I just emailed with my boss there and he said everyone is home, safe and sound. I'm not quite clear on the details, of course, but the outcome is all that matters.

Now it's confession time -- I ate like a pig in New Orleans and am up 5 pounds. Im right back on this healthy eating plan now though, seriously. I wish I could tell you the food I was eating was wonderful but it wasn't. Burgers, fries, whatever they had. Sigh -- Onward.

The other good news is my tendon is completely normal (or so it seems - I go to the doctor next week) and my cold has FINALLY left. So hooray for that.

How was bowling? I love reading about your league. I can so picture you there, having a great time.

As far as the treadmill, 1-2 mph is as fast as you should go, say folks who know. When I go faster, I usually just listen to a podcast (a friend turned me onto the joys of those).

Anyway -- looking forward to more of your news. I'll be here, worshiping my furnace!

N.

Hi Nikki!
I hope your trip home is uneventful ... flights on time and smooth landings! I've been concerned about your colleagues who decided to drive home since so many flights were cancelled. The news paints an ugly picture of what the roads have been like in that part of the country. I'm sure it will be wonderful to be back in your home, sweet home!

All is well here. We've had a little snowy, rainy, icy weather over the last couple of days, but nothing that couldn't be handled fairly easily.

This is bowling leagues day so I need to get moving. I slept in and then we went for a walk, so the morning is nearly gone. I still need to shower and have a bite to eat. We also have a basketball game tonight (the ISU women will be playing, not John and I LOL).

Oh, I forgot to mention that I enjoyed reading your treadmill article the other day. Maybe I'll try reading while on the treadmill going really slow ... I am much too big a klutz and I bounce around too much to focus if I have any speed (even at 3 mph). I suppose even at 1 or 2 is better than just sitting though ...

Gotta run! Enjoy your day! Betty

Hi Betty,

Hi ho, Hi ho, it's back to DC I go and I can NOT wait. New Orleans is still cold and miserable. As I've mentioned, it's not my favorite place anyway, so I'll be glad to get outta here.

Of course I had to have a few work crises while I was here. Typical. But thank God Wayne is a wonderful sport and -- again - there really wasn't much to do anyway.

Boy did I eat! Now that my leg is better and my cold is gone I will be working out like crazy soon (just need the doctor's clearance).

UGH on your allergies. I get them too, ever since we lived in DC. Miserable. I LOVE Clarinex. For some reason, the generic doesn't work. Advil Cold & Sinus has saved me a few times too.

OK lady -- Off to bed with me and back to DC tomorrow. Keep a good thought. xxxx

Good morning Nikki! Well, it's still morning here anyway! ;)

I am doing well! My allergies have been acting up the last couple of days (which seems a little odd for this time of year). My doc prescribed a generic he found for Clarinex and it seems to be holding the allergens at bay! I called for a refill this morning!

I thought you had dodged the bullet on snow storms being away from home this week, but looks like the snowy cold found you anyway. I'm happy to hear you are just going to settle in and wait it out. So many people have suffered travel woes this year that staying close to home sounds appealing to me! (Although a short jaunt down to warm, sunny Arizona would be tempting if the opportunity arose!)

No apologies necessary for being absent BTW. I knew you were traveling and busy and knew you'd be back when the timing worked for you. It is always good to hear from you though. ;)

John had an appointment this morning, but we're going out walking with Chaco when he returns. It looks like a nice day ... the sun is shining but it's just 17 degrees. The forecasters say a little snow my fall later in the day, so clouds must be working their way in our direction. We would welcome snow because our snow pack is critically low and that makes wildfire season a scary prospect!

Can you believe January is almost over? Since times seems to fly by so quickly, I want to live each day wisely ... spending my time on things that matter most. Positive outlook, healthy choices, thankful and hopeful ...and on and on. ;)

So, I need to get moving. Enjoy your day! Stay warm!

XO Betty

Hi Betty!

Well today New Orleans is FREEZING cold. We just came back from breakfast here in the hotel and everyone is sitting down there wearing coats. Brrrr.

I have to admit that I'm fine about this. I would like to take a cemetery tour but it's WAY too cold for that. So I think we'll hunker down and maybe just do some walking in a bit. Thank goodness I brought a winter coat!

Some of my colleagues from the conference were driving back to DC. The airlines have cancelled tons of flights. We decided to stay here and make the most of it. What the heck -- beats sitting in an airport for hours.

We fly out Thursday (when it is supposed to be 70 degrees here!). At least I think we do. Fingers crossed.

So how are YOU?????

Hi girlfriend!!! I am SO sorry I disappeared from you. I'm back!

Between the tendon, the horrible head cold and working at this conference (I'm in New Orleans -- today was the last day!) life got insane. And since I can't work out, well, I'll admit I was a bit blue.

Forgive me.

We're now in New Orleans. Today was my last day at the conference -- woo hop -- and I'm happy to report my tendon is fine. I have lots to share though. AND there is supposed to be an ice storm here! Too crazy (where Nancy goes, crazy weather follows)

I am SO SORRY I was gone! I'm back! And won't leave again.

Can't wait to catch up! N.

Good afternoon N!
It must be Terry's cold you caught, I haven't had one yet in 2014. I did have some sort of sinus/respiratory thing most of December though. Hope you kick it to the curb quickly and enjoy your time in New Orleans. I have never been there. I would like to visit NO some day, but not at Mardi Gras time. (Speaking of MG got me curious about when Lent begins this year. Ash Wednesday is March 5th, later than in the last year or two.)

We've had a lovely day. We went to a different church that we've been meaning to try for several months. It's a small Methodist church and we liked it. The people were very welcoming and friendly (which is how I think churches should be). It's at the far end of town which makes it a 25-minute drive away (darn it!). In small towns you get spoiled by very short commuting times ... ;)

BTW all those healthy plans for eating I had for yesterday went out the window! We ended up getting one of those pizzas I'd been pining for ... and I had a beer with it. We went out to do some shopping and I got tired and hungry and took the easy way out! Oh well, life is good and today is another day. ;)

Well, this day is rushing by. I don't know where the time went! Guess I better get busy on some of the things I hoped to accomplish today.

Have a good trip! Love, Betty

HI Betty!

I caught your cold! :) - Or maybe it was Terry's cold! Anyway, I have a cold but am trying to rally! Seriously, I spent just about the whole day sleeping or wandering around like a zombie. All I did today was go get my mani/pedi (I mean -- we must have priorities here!). I'm sure I'll be better before I go -- it's just a head cold and a mild one at that, but gees.

In other exciting news, my tendon is SO much better. I'm almost back to normal which is wonderful. And least know when I walk around New Orleans I won't feel like I'm a literal step away from the hospital.

Have you been to New Orleans before? I like it there somewhat, but it's nothing that I would necessarily recommend (I'm a party pooper). I do love the old world deep south though -- it's so interesting to watch people. And their coffee is amazing as is the food. I'm so glad Wayne will be there. He always makes things fun.

I hear you on the weight thing. Since I haven't worked out, I've had to be very careful about that I eat. That's another reason I'm really working hard to make sue this darn heel heals (HA!) -- Believe me. It's not that I want to eat like a pig, I just want to not have to worry about an extra 50 calories.

I hope you guys had a wonderful day. Interesting about The Butler. I think I will try to catch on Netflix :)

Write soon! N.

Good morning N!
Well, that movie was a bit of a downer! As they say, sometimes the truth hurts. We thought it was a good history lesson seen from a different perspective. It was definitely not lighthearted, but we are glad we saw it. (Now I need another shot of "Sleepless in Seattle" LOL.)

It is a beautiful day here today. John is busy vacuuming so I need to go help in the cleaning effort fairly soon. We're going to take Chaco for a walk in around an hour, then I want to pick up a few groceries and try the broiled flank steak and oven-roasted vegetables recipes in the South Beach book tonight.

Did I mention that I decided to do another brief period of SB Phase One starting last Saturday. I've dropped three pounds this week, but I've been stuck for three days now at the same weight ... so I'm going to try to be more diligent about my food and drink today. Something has come up the last two days that threw a small monkey wrench into my plans. (I do like that I'm staying flexible enough to go with the flow though.) I'd really like to drop another five pounds or so and then try to stabilize at that weight for awhile. I have some goals I am pursuing!

Well, that's enough about me, me, me. Hope you are having a great Saturday and easily coasting into readiness for your trip. Glad to hear your heel is feeling better. Are you taking your boot to NO? I want a full report on all the fun and interesting things you do there!

I really must pitch in on the cleaning now, John has moved his vacuuming downstairs now and here I am, still sitting at my computer. Tsk! Tsk!

Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

I am SO JEALOUS that you're so close to Jackson Hole and might go sledding there! How FUN!!! You'll have to tell me all about it.

Well today was a whirlwind of work. I sure got a lot done but boy -- I'm glad it's Friday night and we're just doing nothing tonight. For once in my life, I am determined to go on a business trip and not be hysterical the night before, scrambling to meet deadlines!

One thing I did today was go to a Habitat for Humanity Restore here. I actually bought two pieces of brand new Pottery Barn hardware (towel rack and a magazine rack) when I was there. This story will practically write itself, I think, because the people are so generous and enthusiastic in talking. I'll definitely send you a copy of the story electronically (they don't post them online because the magazines are sold in newsstands and they're funky about that). If things go as I hope, you'll see two crafty pieces on there by our own Terry!

We haven't been to a move in a while -- I think to see Gravity, which was amazing. hope you enjoy The Butler. Interesting that it was shut out of the Academy Awards. Who knows how those things work?

It was fairly warm here today but supposed to snow tonight. That's fine. This weekend the only thing I'm really doing is having my nails done. My tendon is almost normal now! Can you believe it? Of course I'm fighting that cold but that's life.

Hope you have a great evening! xxxx

Greetings NPD!
It is such a beautiful day here today...fairly warm. I'm loving it! The group of ladies I'm in a Friday Bible study with started a new study this morning. We had such a good session. I'm so thankful I joined this group.

In answer to your question, we do have a Habitat for Humanity ReStore here in Poky. We've never purchased anything there, but we have made lots of donations there during our various remodeling jobs ... doors, cabinets, dishwasher and so forth. I'd love to read your article when it comes out. Hope you'll post it on FB or tell me where to look. Since I sort of know the two of you, it will be extra special. ;)

Your New Orleans trip sounds fun! I think you said Wayne would be flying down for part of your time there. I've got a friend (and her hubby) who are headed down to Arizona for a week on Sunday ... I'd love to spend a little time down there soaking up some warm, sunny weather. We usually go down that way for a week or so in March (when winter seems like it's never going to end!), but we probably won't make it down there this year since I have that knee replacement surgery scheduled for mid March.

Hope the AirBorne does the trick in fighting off your cold. It seems to work well if you get on it soon enough. We buy the economy packs at Costco. ;)

We're going to a movie tonight. We've settled on "The Butler" ... it's been out awhile and so it's moved to the smaller theater, but a friend of ours recommended it so I'm eager to see it. No other real plans for the weekend. John did mention a little earlier that we should run up to Jackson Hole and take a sled ride (?) out to view wildlife on a week day sometime soon (guess I was only half listening because I can't remember exactly what he said ... but it sounded fun).

Enjoy your pizza and TV time with your sweetie! Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

Wow -- I didn't know John has written books. That is so exciting. I'm 99 percent certain I have no book in me but I've learned never to say never.

Well today was crazy but I know it will pay off. When I go to New Orleans next week, I should have all of my major projects done. That will mean I can just do odds and ends while I'm gone which will be a big relief.

Today I worked on a fun story -- I am writing something for "Home" magazine published by USA Today and got to interview Terry! She does a lot with Habitat for Humanity where she lives so that's what we discussed. Tomorrow I'll go to a ReStore (much like Terry works at) and see one for myself. I had no idea you could buy such treasures at those stores. Do you have any such stores near you? The national spokesman told me they have stores in 49 of the 50 status (none in South Dakota, I think he said).

Well it's 9:30 p.m. here -- I am just finishing work but, again, I know it will be worth it (I think I will earn a pretty penny this month too).

The weather here turned really cold today. And, of course, I feel as if I'm starting to get a cold. No worries though -- 'Ive been taking AirBorne like a crazy person so all fingers crossed it fights it off. I think one reason that I have felt ill so much lately is that I'm not eating enough fruits and veggies. I have to do better!

Do you have any plans for the weekend? I bet you do! Wayne is off tomorrow and planning to do a lot of odds and ends around the house when I work. No matter what happens, though, I'm definitely off duty tomorrow night! It'll be TV time while we much our weekly pizzas (you know it's life in the fast lane here!)

Can't wait to hear your latest report. Love, N.

Good morning N!
Our weather sounds about like yours. Our high is supposed to be in the low 40s today. We had some horrid winds last Sunday and Monday, so this really seems like wonderful weather!

I didn't start out with the treadmill today. It is so beautiful, maybe we'll get out for a walk with Chaco before bowling this afternoon. That old favorite in-town trail that has reopened is really nice for us. It is fairly flat and at this time of year isn't used by a lot of folks so we can let Chaco run free (and just rein her in if we see other folks coming; there is a leash law).

I'm happy to hear you are obeying the "no exercise" order from your doc. You'll heal much faster and more thoroughly that way. I know it's hard for you because exercise has become so much of who your are ... perhaps a little bit too much, eh?

I can't imagine doing so many interviews and all that writing. I don't know how you do it. Good that you're doing what you love!

John is working away on updates and revisions of several books. That keeps him hidden away downstairs in his office a good deal of the time. One of them is completed and author's copies are on the way I believe, but he's banging away on another. Two of the revisions are of books he wrote with his father back in the 80s and 90s. The one he's working on so diligently now is new to him, a revision of the "Fishes of Idaho" that he wasn't an author on previously. It was quite old and outdated and he's working on an update with a fisheries man from the Boise area. I finished typing up the old glossary for him last night so he has a computerized version to work with now (I'd been dragging my heels on that for a couple of months!). Then there's his novel that he keeps trying to find a publisher for (lots of rejections there). He's doing some additional tweaking on that too. I guess all that work keeps him out of trouble. LOL

Well, I've yammered on long enough. Hope you are having a productive day at home!
;) Betty

Hi Betty!

You have no idea how envious I am that you're exercising! Good for you! I'm on my second week of no exercise and it's killing me. For one thing, I know it'll be grueling when I do start again. Sigh -- You'll be glad to know I am following doctor's orders to the letter and it is making a big difference. And I will NOT push it -- if I hadn't been so hard core, I wouldn't be in this mess.

The boot, the pain med/anti-inflammatory and ice are all combining to make me feel SO MUCH BETTER! I went to Baltimore today to write (I told you that, I believe) and felt almost normal. And I did a LOT of walking all around the Johns Hopkins campus -- so that's a positive.

Boy - -when I returned home though (interviews, editor meeting, etc) I was exhausted! So happy that Thursday is a "home all day" time. I have a few interviews to do, a ton of writing, and God willing some house cleaning.

How's your weather? It was about 40 here today, cold tomorrow.

Good morning N!
I'm glad you got the boot. I have one of those from back when I had a bout with plantar faciitis ten (or more) years ago. I get it out and wear it around the house occasionally when my ankle is really bothering me. It does help.

Everything sounds great for you ... all that work just when you have more time available to do it. You can feel really good about yourself for being a sought-after writer! Things do always seem to work out for the best (eventually). ;)

I got up early and spent 30 minutes on the treadmill before sunrise. I feel so energized from doing that. I am seriously thinking about trying to incorporate that into my morning routine. Then if we get out and walk later in the day too, so much the better. When I leave exercise for later in the day, it often doesn't happen.

I have an appointment at 10 so I need to get moving. Stay off that foot as much as possible ... HEAL! (I'm smiling thinking that sounds like HEEL ... a dog command that Chaco refuses to follow).

Have a great day! Betty

Hi Betty!

Are you kidding? I LOVE posting daily. You keep me on track (not to mention I like chatting with you) so I'm back big time! Now that I have my immobilizing boot I actually am healing a bit. It's not as bad as it sounds, really. The doctor told me if I can keep it on for 2-3 hours a day, he'll be satisfied. I can surely do that.

Again, it actually feels much better when it's on. If I understand correctly, the boot stretches my tendon. What happened is that overdoing the working out (sigh -- I didn't feel like I was but my body clearly feels differently) inflamed tissues around the tendon. That combined with some weird bone -- I guess spur -- I have has strained the muscle. The hope is not to have it snap! ARG -- so I'm under orders NOT to work out at all. Not even kettle bells. That just kills me but what can you do?

Sorry to make this so self indulgent but since I'm in it this far, I'll just mention that work has been booming! I feel very lucky to have so many terrific (read high paying) assignments. The only bummer is that I need to get them done right away! But I want to look on the bright side of that too - -It's too easy to dilly dally with these. Time to get them done now and move onto new ones.

Please try not to be too upset about the pound. You know how it works -- a pound, even two, might simply be water weight. Or who knows what! Having said that, I feel that I'm still a slave to the scale -- and you know what -- that's fine! If I don't go on the scale a lot I gain so it's the best way I know to keep myself in check.

Despite this "poor me" message, I am in a pretty positive mindset. I'm using these weeks to make sure that I get my body healthy -- I'm going to get special work out shoes, too, so this doesn't happen again. And I'm concentrating on using the "extra" time wisely.

The good news, Miss Self Absorbed is back, is that I haven't gained any weight. Thank GOD because I haven't been that strict with myself except to really track, track, track calories. (No worries about tracking steps, etc now! That's for sure).

I will be in Baltimore tomorrow for work but definitely get on here during the day. Thanks so much for your patience with me.

Signed,

The Boots Aren't Made for Walking!

Good morning N!
Don't worry about posting daily! I know you'll be back when your life settles back into a less stressful routine. I hope you are feeling better today. It's great that your weight is staying where you want it to be!

I must have overdone it a bit yesterday, I was back up a pound today. We had a lunch meeting and eating out is always a challenge for me! I'm going to lunch with a group of ladies again today. Hope I can find something on the menu that isn't too out of line with my current eating plan. I did decide to do another couple of weeks of South Beach Phase One to get some more pounds off. It amazes me how well that works if I can find enough acceptable food choices to keep satisfied. I will need to wait until I get off phase one to try the pizza.

I need to get moving. Hope you're having a great day. ;) Betty

Sorry haven't been around lady. It's been a tough week already!!! I actually am keeping my leg immobilized in a boot (ouch!) due to the Achilles Tendon problem (went to the doctor today). Between that, the pain, and trying to get work done it's been insane (and heck, it's only Monday!).

I promise I will write a long, newsy email Tuesday. Gees -- what a day!

One blessing -- I have not gained any weight at all. I'm back to what I was at Christmas. Talk about a miracle.

BTW -- YUMMY on that pizza. When I was on Adkins, I could eat the pizza toppings. Can you do that on South Beach??? Hmmm.

More tomorrow. Thanks for not abandoning me! I miss you. xx

Good morning N!
I'm finishing up my morning Spark time and stopped to say hello. Hope you're having a good weekend (although I think you were going to be working some yesterday).

The scale was kind to me this morning, so I was encouraged to get Sparking early so I could update my weight tracker. It's funny how little things like that are motivators.

It is so windy here this morning that I'm considering staying home from church and just making this an indoor day. I've got more than enough reading and paperwork to keep me busy, and I can exercise right here ... so, we'll see. I hope this weather pattern is moving through and will soon be gone! I believe they were predicting pleasant weather for the coming week.

Have a lovely day with your sweetie! ;) Betty

Good morning N!
Your Friday night pizza sounds good! I've been seeing ads for Papa Murphy's chicken-bacon-artichoke delight ... and I'm looking forward to giving that a try! I've decided it's time for another couple of weeks of Phase One South Beach though, so the pizza may have to wait! I need to jump start some more weight loss. I'm currently hovering around the same weight, up or down a pound. I need to make some progress on my goals!

We have another basketball game this afternoon. Other than that, my time is my own today.

We did end up staying in town last night. We had a good meal at Ruby Tuesday's.

The sun is breaking through clouds and shining in my window right now. It's funny how uplifting sunshine is ... it really boost my spirits.

Hope your interview goes well today and your writing is a joyful breeze. Enjoy your weekend!
;) Betty

Hi Betty,

I hope the weather cooperates and you guys have a wonderful time tonight. As I write this, I await our pizza delivery dude (a Friday night tradition at our house).

Thanks for all of your good advice on my tendon. It is SO much better I can't believe it. I'm sure I injured it when I was running. I think technically now I could do kettle bells but I'm going to wait until Monday. Why risk it? I have so much walking I'll be doing in New Orleans when I cover the conference, I figure better safe than sorry.

It's cold here tonight and there's still more than a bit of freezing rain. Like you, I don't want to go out unless I can help it (thank God John took Chaco out, right?). I did run to the store after I got Wayne at the Metro but that was it. Suffice to say I'm in for the evening.

In a way, the tendon problem has been a blessing in disguise. I think I got more accomplished this week than I have in the previous four weeks. And I've been very good as far as eating too - no giant pig outs going on. It's funny how the healthier eating habits become ingrained right?

And as the Domino's guy drives up (did he hear me?), I will close this and write more tomorrow.

TGIF indeed.

Love, N.

Good morning N!
I confess; I'm having a lazy morning. Feels good too! It is after 11 and I haven't really accomplished much. John took Chaco for a walk earlier, but I could not bring myself to go out in the wind. I'm planning to spend some time on the treadmill and recumbent bike this afternoon while he's at his massage.

We're going out to dinner with our friends tonight to celebrate Bob's birthday. He is 20 days younger than John . Our plan, if the weather (i.e. roads) permits, is to drive up to Blackfoot to that Mexican food restaurant we all like. It's only about 20 miles up the freeway to Blackfoot, but there are a lot of crazy drivers between here and there for some reason, so if the roads are questionable, we'll stay in Poky.

Glad you're having a productive day! Rest and heal and then start back on your exercise at a slower pace. What caused your Achilles' tendon injury/pain? Were you perhaps overdoing? You'll know what's best if you just listen to your body, I'm sure.

Take care! ;) Betty

I just had to comment -- today it is freezing rain. Tomorrow highs will be in the 60s! Craziness here.

Anyway, Betty, good morning. I've got a busy day ahead but I'm happy about that. You know how we self-employed people are! Today should be a few interviews and then write, write, write.

One thing I find curious is how much more motivated I am to work now that I'm not trying to wedge exercise into my day. I'm going to try (try being the key word) to start working out in the morning when I do return to it (which hopefully will be next week -- I feel much better!). Even 30-60 minutes in the morning and then 30 minutes at night would probably work well.

I've never been a morning person, but I like others' idea of starting your day with such a healthy activity and then moving ahead.

Anyway, enough about ME! How are you??? xx

Hi Betty,

I hope bowling was great!! I do envy you that -- it sounds so much fun. The good news on exercise for me is that my heel is healing! So keep your fingers crossed that it works out for me, please. I'd really love to have this a memory. I think I will be able to do kettle bells certainly by next week. Thank God. I don't want my thighs to look like I pulled a ripcord on them!

Wow the snow sounds brutal. And pretty. It's still cold here but, again, it's going to be 60 degrees here on the weekend so how bad can it be?

That is so funny about Marie's photo! Thanks for the tip. I am hopeless on those things!!!

Well the other good news is that I have gotten another essay done today! I'm so thrilled to be working with this writing coach. I'm so excited to get some of these things published and move my business ahead! I am also pitching some new magazines too. My thought is there is a lot I CAN do but I need to concentrate on what I want to do.

So at least I'm making some progress during my exercise hiatus.

In two weeks I go to New Orleans for National Auto Dealers Association. I'm pretty excited to go too. Wayne's birthday is January 25, so he's going to fly out and meet me there. It will be so great to tour there. I have been there before but that's when I was really heavy and couldn't do much. So now I should be able to see things!

Well I'm gonna start dinner but, as always, I'm so glad you wrote! Can't wait to hear all your news.

My best, N.

Good morning N!
While I'm thinking of Marie's horse photo, look at it again ... it took me a while to see it and then I felt silly because the whole center of the photo is a horse's head turned on its side. Once I saw it, I was amazed I hadn't seen it earlier.

We're having a true snow day today. John just came in from shoveling the drive and he said he was having a hard time keeping up with it. We are going to go take Chaco for a walk on a nearby (in town rather than in the hills) trail in a few minutes. I'm looking forward to a walk in the snow.

This afternoon is our bowling again, and then tonight we have a basketball game to attend. The ISU ladies are finally back at home. We enjoy watching them play.

I need to go get dressed for our walk, so I'm going to keep this short.

Keep healing and keep writing! ;) (and enjoy your colder weather while it lasts)

Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

I love sale time too. I just bought a pair of boots (ironic, right, since I can't wear them for a while now!) and just adore them. The tough part (sort of) in DC is that it's cold here so rarely (I know most people have no sympathy for me on that) I have to be careful not to over buy on heavy items. If you saw my closet, you'd know I failed on that endeavor.

Please never apologize for when you write. We all write when we can. Life is so crazy! I'm glad to hear your treasury duty has ended! Wonderful news!

A writing client basically insisted that I come to Baltimore yesterday. So I drove there (about 70 minutes with no traffic), ate a lunch I didn't want, and came back. Then I worked unit 9:30 pm. I tell you, feast or famine in my business.

Sorry to drone on but the Achille's Tendon is still really sore but healing (I think!). I just have to keep wearing shoes (which I should do all the time anyway!) and being careful.

And no worries about me rushing exercise. I'm just so glad this happened NOW when I have so much writing to do. If it had to happen....

Would you believe it's supposed to be 60 degrees here on Saturday? All I can say is, I'll be wearing my warm clothes right up til that time. Can't let them go to waste!

Oh and in answer to your question about Marie's post -- I can never see those things (I'm too impatient) but those are fun.

Have a super Thursday! Looking forward to your next message. Love, N.

Good evening NPD!
Boy, I'm really late checking in today. I left for a meeting at 11AM and got back home just before 5PM. I've been the treasurer of our NARFE chapter for seven years, but today a new treasurer was installed. Hooray! So, after the meeting we went to be bank to get him on the account and me OFF! ;)

Among other errands after that, I went shopping for towels. I've been looking locally (there's not an over abundance of department stores here) and on line for some colorful, interesting new towels. I could not find any that suited me. We have one newish store in our little mall, Herberger's, and I decided to try them today. I settled for a mix and match assortment, so I came home with four different colors of towel sets and some cushy new rugs. I'm running towels through the laundry now and I guess I'm pleased with what I ended up buying. I loved that it is SALE time! We just wanted to liven up our bathroom with a splash of color ...

I had a dermatologist appointment to top all that off. Boy was I glad to get home and happy that we had leftovers in the frig for dinner.

I read your Lisa Marie article and found it very interesting. Thanks for sharing it! You do a great job... and the company you keep ... holy cow!

Glad to hear you are mending and feeling better. Don't rush the exercise! Give yourself plenty of time to heal. That will pay off in the long run (as you know).

It was pretty snowy here most of the day and they are predicting more tomorrow with quite a bit in the high country. That is good news! It gets so dry here in the summer and wildfires have wrecked havoc in recent years.

Did you see Maria's post of the photo where you were share when you saw the horse? That was really amazing it thought. I don't usually share, but I do "like." She seems to be doing very well judging by her FB posts of late. I like her! ;)

I'm going to sign off for the night now. Until next time... Love, Betty

Hi Betty!

It's so great to hear from you and how well your new time management is working. Good for you. I did a little something like that too, on a very minor level. I had a former boss ask me to work on a freelance job with him. Long story short, I had made plans to meet him for lunch but ended up rethinking it and canceling. There are so many things I can do but I'm trying hard to do things I WANT to do -- certainly with work. After all, it's not like I have 20 more years to accomplish my goals. The bell is tolling a bit here :)

So here's to a more organized, saner and happy 2014.

As far as the exercise, I'm really fine about it. As I say, it's sort of forcing me to rethink my food choices (because I have to eat so much less now). That's a positive because I was going to hog wild before. It seems to be better today, too, so I'm hoping the recovering is more in the two week than six week range.

I was glad to hear that your doctor's appointment went well. I wonder if the cholesterol was due to South Beach? I have no idea, of course, but just wondered if that might be a factor (a temporary one).

Loved your story about the food bank. It sure sounds like you did the right thing. There's no point being there if you're not really needed. When I volunteered as the pool last year, I had a few situations like that too. So many people showed up, that I was basically sitting on the side talking to a friend. I decided to leave as well (or in some cases, go swim!)

As far as the weather, you'd likely laugh if you were here in DC. It's cold, definitely, but gees -- it's January (remember, I grew up in Rochester, NY, home to 7 foot snowbanks so....). By Friday the temperatures will be in the 50s, maybe 60, so how bad can it be, you know? Anyway -- I like the snow. Another good reason to heal -- so I can do the snowshoeing in February (our Maine trip).

Hope all is well there the rest of the day and I look so forward to another chat soon.

N.

xx

Good afternoon N!
I flipped my schedule around today so I'm checking in here much later than usual. I'm sorry to hear about your Achilles' Tendon. You've been going at exercise so full-bore I suspect it will be difficult for you to be idle for two weeks or longer. Glad you're looking at the positive side of things and have plenty of other work and activities to keep you occupied.

My doctor's appointment went well too ... got some answers/advice on some nagging complaints I've had and my labs were good for the most part. My cholesterol is a little high, but my HDL is really high and that is an offsetting factor on that.

I got up early today and did the treadmill for 30 minutes. That's a good way to start the day. I had a coffee to attend but I kept moving and got a few things done at home before leaving. After the coffee, I went to lunch with some of the ladies and then we went to the food bank to volunteer. (This is a monthly "thing" for our ladies club, but this was the first time I've gone since our new club year began in September.) I only stayed at the food bank half an hour because they had another group come in to help and it just became too crowded and crazy. We were bumping into each other coming and going, so I decided they had more than enough volunteer help for today. ;)

I have my monthly conference call with my two high school best friends in an hour. The first Tuesday of each month is always busy for me (which is probably why I've skipped so many coffees recently!).

It chilly here today too, but probably not as cold as it is over on your side of the country. What's with all this crazy weather! We ended up not getting all that snow they'd predicted last weekend. We really need snow. Think I'll do my snow dance! ;)

Better run and get a few more things done before time for the call. We usually talk a couple of hours. I am not fond of talking on the phone usually, but I do love these monthly calls.

Take care! Let that Achilles' heal! XO Betty

Hi Betty!

Sorry I haven't been around today. I actually had a fine appointment with the doctor EXCEPT for my Achilles' Tendon. He told me it's pretty serious and I can't exercise at all for two to six weeks. He said if it becomes worse, I face surgery and immobilization for Six months if it gets worse.

The good news is I'm going to look at this as a positive. 1. I learned about it before it got bad 2. I can use the extra time to write (very behind, as always!) 3. It will motivate me when I am better to change my work out ways a bit and incorporate a lot more kettle bells.

Candidly, I could do Kbs and some upper body now (or at least in a week or so) but he's worried I'll get too exuberant so wants me to wait and make sure I heal a bit first. ARG.

Sounds like you had a lovely day and I'm so very glad.

In answer to your question, I don't get too involved in many other things on SP. I did just agree to co-lead and snowshoe team here but that's about it. The reason is I found I was spending too much time posting on here and not enough time exercising and keeping healthy (if that makes any sense).

I do have a few accountability partners that have become more like friends -- which is lovely.

OK -- my dearest SP friend -- Stay warm, healthy and, as you said, thank God we're not stranded in some airports! I will be on here much more tomorrow.

xxx

Good morning N!
Good luck with your doctor's appointment today! I have my appointment today too. It amuses me to see how our lives run in parallels at times.

It is delightfully peaceful and quiet here at my desk this morning. The sun is just about to pop over the mountains at the south end of our valley. I've been very relaxed on my time management and been sitting here close to an hour. I need to decide whether spending this much time at my computer first thing in the morning is a good way to start the day or not. I like to catch up on my WwF plays and do my Spark rituals. That usually takes at least an hour and is something that might be better left until later in the day.

Are you involved in the Spark community much beyond this? I have a few motivational threads I like to post to everyday, etc. It does give me a sense of connection to others (at a safe distance).

John and Chaco are sleeping in, and it's so quiet that I can hear the pendulum clock ticking. This is a balm for my spirit. There are two jet streams streaking across the clear sky. The sun, even though it's not quite up yet, is illuminating their paths. I hope that means some of those travelers who have been stranded in airports are making their ways to their destinations.

Well, I better get at it. The suns is coming over the mountain. Its light is filtered by the tall evergreen tree at the edge of our yard. How blessed I feel to enjoy this moment.

Have a wonderful day N! Hope to hear good things your doctor has to say!

XO Betty

Hi Betty!

Good for you! That is excellent!

You know, one thing I was doing that I think I will do again is only write personal emails when I'm on the treadmill. It makes me feel that at least I'm doing something worthwhile while I do that. Anyway, just my own little way to be more productive during a non productive time.

Sounds like you are leagues ahead of whatever little time management thing I do.

And good for you going out for a walk. I've been a real couch potato today (Sunday is my "day off" from working out). I'll be back on it tomorrow too and that will include wearing my tracker. didn't even wear it today! I hate to run down the battery for nothing (it's not that I'm cheap; I just don't want to go through the hassle of changing it!)

Well nothing new here tonight. I've started working on some new stories, trying to get a little jump on the week. Wish me luck at the doctor's tomorrow! I always get paranoid about these things.

Here's to a healthy, happy 2014!

Much love, N.

Good afternoon N!
Well, I did fairly well with my schedule yesterday. There's plenty of room for improvement, but I like the track I'm on. The day planner I bought has 15-minute increments for 7 to 5 each day EXCEPT Sundays ... just 10 blank spaces for Sunday (obviously a day of rest for the at-a-glance folks) ... so I've listed 10 things I'd like to get done today and I've done (at least partially) 4 of them by 1:45. Not too bad. Gives me a target anyway.

We're going out walking with our friend and her dog at 3PM...so that will get the exercise item checked off. Sounds like you are an over achiever in the exercise department. I need to rev my exercise up a notch (or 3!).

It is a bright sunny day here, but temps are in the 20s. For some reason that feels really cold. I'll wrap up better today. Yesterday the wind was blowing in my face as we were headed uphill and I had thoughts of frost bite on my cheeks. Glad the wind isn't blowing today!

Hope it's a lovely day for you. Love, B

Hi Betty!

I love your new time management goals. I'm basically trying to do the same thing here. I feel that there are all these projects I should do, want to do, and never do! So like you I'm trying to be more disciplined.

Speaking of disciplined, despite a shaky start to exercise this year, I'm glad to say I am once again back on track for my goals. I went about 300 calories OVER on exercise this week which is what I want to do. So hooray for that.

The snow yesterday was only about an inch or so but the ice is still ugly. Wayne had a comp day yesterday which was super -- perfect day to be home (the Fed. Govt. did not close -- I can't ever figure them out).

I'm happy to report that since my exercise is done I have the day free which means, lunch & some TV catch up with Wayne and writing. My kinda day.

BTW -- so sorry to hear about the death of your friend. My prayers.

You GO girl! Much love, N.

PS -- BIG Congrats on the bowling success! Woo hooo!

Good morning N!
I have three minutes to do a quick check in with you! I am embarking on a fresh effort to manage my time. LOL I bought a day planner yesterday and I'm going to work on getting more of the things I've been meaning to do actually done! I don't plan to be totally ruled by this, but I'm feeling very enthusiastic about giving it a try. I do fritter a lot of time away.

I allowed 30 minutes of computer time for this session, and then I'm moving on. I'll be back later in the day of course!

Hope the snow storm isn't too crazy for you. Did Wayne get a day off today? I haven't looked at the news, so I have no idea what's happening "out there" today. "Out there" being outside my home. LOL

Well, my three minutes are up. Have a fabulous day.

XO Betty

Good morning!
The skies were fairly clear here at sunrise, but it is completely overcast now. A little snow has been falling and we have predictions of more on the way. That would be a good thing because we need to build our snow pack ... and the ski industry and skiers are eager to get going full steam!

I will be attending the funeral this afternoon for a remarkable lady who lived her 86 years with such gusto that she touched many lives. Farewell Anne! You have been an inspiration!

I enjoyed bowling yesterday and did pretty well. Our team is in first place for the time being ... amazing! We're usually pretty close to the bottom in the standings.

Just checking in to say hello. I need to tackle today's "to do" list. I'm feeling a little like Alice's rabbit, so I better dash!

TGIF indeed! XO Betty

There's snow in DC this morning! This is NOTHING compared to most places, but everyone here is hysterical. It's the southern mindset.

What's funny is, the federal government is open. It closed one day when we had almost no precipitation. Go figure!

Hi Betty,

Thanks for the newsy email. I loved it. Just the motivation/kinship I needed after my work out tonight. Let's face it -- this journey is a lonely one sometimes.

As you'll see on my page, I am working out like a lunatic these days. That's because I made a pig of myself on New Year's Eve.

I tell you, the only thing that saves me from blowing up like a balloon is 1. my kettle bell work outs 2. My 5-2/intermittent fasting diet plan.

I know you're reading different books so I'll just tell you about the plan I've used for the past six months or so. Basically I eat whatever I want (within reason -- which I haven't even done! Again, pig out city here on New Year's) five days a week and two days a week I do a modified fast.

I read about it in the NY Times and then a few other places. It has really worked well for me. Clearly, the secret is finding what works for each of us.

That's great about you reading the books to explore options. I have found that incorporating a bit of several different plans seems to work well for me. Yet as much as I enjoy veggies, I'm ashamed to admit I often am too lazy to prepare them. Sigh -- another thing for me to work on.

By the way, I had to smile when I read how you grow sleepy as you read! The same thing happens to me! Crazy!

Well it's time to finally wind down a bit and get ready for bed. I hope you had a nice day and big fun bowling (the day after Christmas? Really? Wow -- as the kids say, that is hard core -- and by the way, of course I'm not surprised you're the youngest in the crowd!)

Thanks for asking about the storm here. Candidly, it's NOTHING. As you know I'm from Rochester, NY and so this is just -- well, nothing. Maybe an inch. Or two. My theory is that because DC is filled with so many people from around the world, many of whom have never even driven in snow, it's a crisis. But you'd laugh if you saw it. Right now, it's a dusting and I guarantee the federal government will likely close tomorrow. At least have a delay.

Ah, well -- when in Rome.

Signed,

Frosty the Snow Girl

Good morning N!
I too am happy January has arrived! I am eager to get back into healthier eating now that the holidays are over and it's just John and I at the feeding trough! I started reading Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" again yesterday. I started reading it a few years back (Adam gave it to me), but I never finished it. I'm more ready to listen to what he has to say now. I've also pulled Kris Carr's "Crazy Sexy Diet" (that Stacey gave me last May) off the shelf. I started and stopped reading that one too. [Do you think my kids are trying to tell me something? LOL] I don't plan to become a vegetarian (nor do my kids), but I am very interested in incorporating more fresh vegetables into my (our) meals.

I've got a whole stack of books I've gathered that I'm going to get through this year! (and they're not all food related!) The trouble is that reading makes me so drowsy that I end up dosing off. That makes it hard to absorb the message! Everything is seeming humorous to me this morning. (and I kind of like that!)

This afternoon it's back to bowling. They actually bowled last week (the day after Christmas!), but John and I didn't go. We had a house full of family. It is a senior league (and believe it or not, John and I are among the younger bowlers on the league.) For many of them, bowling is their main activity. Some bowl three afternoons a week.

Wow! The sun just popped over the southern horizon and it's 8:29. As I said in huddle, I'm happy to see the daylight hours getting longer!

I thought of you when we were watching the news/weather last night. It sounded like a horrendous snow storm was headed your way. The news frequently makes things sound much more dramatic than folks in the area say they're actually experiencing. I suppose it is just that events being reported aren't as widely spread as I picture in my imagination. (Or could it be that hype makes the news more interesting... LOL). [Sometimes we hear news of violence in Paris and when we ask Ellie if everything's okay, she isn't even aware of any trouble (and she lives in the inner ring of Paris).]

Happy to hear you have lots of writing to do. I know that makes you happy. Have a productive day!

On to my next task ... ;) Betty

Good morning!

I must admit that I'm happy it's January! I'm ready for a fresh start this year on lots of things.

The first thing I'll report is that I am loaded up with assignments -- thank goodness. The last few months were so slow, I was more than a bit worried. At least I'm starting the year out right with some meaty, high-paying (for me) assignments.

I'm also ready to buckle down and stop eating! It's funny how easy it is to fall into old habits. I've been lucky to only gain a few pounds, which I think I can vanquish pretty quickly -- just gotta keep salt and chocolate outta reach.

My new goal is to be a size 8 by Valentine's Day and I'm bound and determined it meet it. Enough is enough!

So how are you? Any new goals for this year? Please do tell.

It's cold in DC today (for here - 28 degrees) and we should have a bit of snow tonight. That will, of course, freak out everyone in DC but I'm looking forward to it. Wayne will be off work (federal employees have it nice!) and I'm hoping he'll build a fire in the fireplace.

Happy Thursday (that feels like Monday!).

And away we go! N.

Happy New Year Betty!!!

It sounds like you've already kicked off the year with a few great starts! So glad you have the couches in place and everything is returning to normal.

As far as the decorations, I have a lot of friends that leave them up until Jan. 6 too. I just have always taken mine down on January 1 -- fresh start and all, as you said. I'm so happy to have it done now -- even got a bit of cleaning done, too!

Now I'm ready to get down to work tomorrow including a nice, long work out. I have to admit today I was a bit off the mark! That's what wen does to me these days!

Anyway -- Sorry I was so late responding! Tomorrow I'll be up ready to roll! And Spark!

Much love, N.

Good morning N!
Wow, I see the morning is nearly gone here and already gone where you are ... isn't that just like life as a whole, going by so fast!

Adam did help John move the couches and I'm loving the new set up. We had a nice short visit and he gave me some good ideas on things I need to work on in 2014 (not directly, but comments he made spurred some thoughts on areas I'd like to make changes in). He is such a bundle of energy.

Stacey and Kerry will be back here by evening and she is going to prepare dinner for our friends (Bob and Sandra) and us. She is so into healthy food, it will be a treat. (Of course, the wine and appetizers I'll offer may counterbalance her good efforts!) ;)

BTW, I usually leave our Christmas decorations up until Epiphany (Jan 6), but it is really nice to have them mostly down. I'm really ready for a fresh start.

Your pizza and wine evening sounds like a lovely way to spend NYE! I don't know if we'll stay up til midnight or not ... we'll see how we feel when the time comes. None of us are much into late nights these days.

Alright, it's time to give my kitchen floor one last mopping for 2013. Happy New Year to you and Wayne!

XO, Betty
