I hear you, Rosa, and as strange as it seems -- if you don't eat "enough" you can also sabatoge your weight loss plan. Your body is a fickle little girl. You have to eat enough of the right stuff to lose. Eating too much or too little doesn't work. You also have to get in an earnest amount of exercise each day. Give your body what it really wants and you have a well-oiled machine, responding to your care. Don't do it -- you turn to FAT!

Every time I stop tracking seriously things fall apart and I gain. This time round it was big time and I put on everything I had lost this year plus some. Two weeks ago I broke out of the waking up every morning determined to stay on track to failing by the end of the day cycle and as a result have got myself back to where I started from. You are right Scotmama, exercise is crucial, and eating enough of the right things. I find if I starve myself I don't lose weight, which is even more disheartening.

I have found one thing to be true (at least for me) -- if I don't exercise, at least 20 minutes or so, it doesn't matter how good my eating plan is -- I either stay the same, or gain.

lol -- You sound like me, Sandra -- mine has been having a ball so far this month. Here's how it's gone so far:
1st = 138.4
2nd = 139
3rd = 138.4
4th = 139.4
5th = 138.8
6th = 138.8 so at least I've stayed in the 130's and 2 days in a row right now.

Have a good day everyone! emoticonemoticon

emoticon idea!!

After about the first 30 days with SP, I was looking at my meager weight loss - and my goal weight. That kind of thinking made my goal seem almost impossible, so I decided to work toward 1/4 of the goal, 1/2 of the goal, 3/4 of the goal, then goal. It lifted my spirits because I reached my first short-term goal very quickly.

The one week at a time thing - and half a pound - breaks it down into something even more do-able! emoticon for that tip! emoticon

Tiny, instead of thinking of the 15 pounds that's gone and about how much more you have to lose, just plan on one week at a time. Say Sunday to Sunday, and keep your goal small so it is obtainable -- like maybe half a pound. Mark it on your calendar, like if you are 150 right now, next Sunday write goal = 149.5 and the next Sunday goal = 149, and keep going. Then when the day comes, write actual weight 148.5 down 1.5 or if it's 151 write up 1. But you will find short term goals help. Yes, we probably both need to do more exercise. I'm digging out a video today and will give it a shot. It will probably KILL ME!

I know what you mean, Eve! Mine's doing the same thing! Just before I read your post, I was thinking,"must need to exercise more!" And I guess I need to practice patience! I SO want this weight to drop OVERNIGHT! I know that isn't going to happen. I keep trying to focus on the 15 pounds I've lost since May 29th. That's a slow loss, but it's more than I would have lost if I had done nothing!!

How often? How about EVERY DAY! This humidity is killing me as far as making headway in weight loss. It's 138.4 then 139 then 138.4 and today 139.4 -- emoticon

I think it's time I got out a video and tried to do some exercise inside the house! And the only thing between me and exercise is that one big word. PROCRASTINATION!!

Ha ha, another funny. I wear a real light weight pant suit and take my shoes off when I weigh in anywhere. They will probably bring me a bag of used clothes thinking I just have one outfit. emoticon

Darn those KOPS people anyway -- no birthday suits, huh? Well, I'd just figure 4 or 5 pounds off their weight then as my REAL weight. Like I told the doctor -- they should really take off a few pounds when they enter your weight -- and I always try to dress light when I go to him.

Looking forward to August! emoticonemoticon

SHAZ IN TAZ you are so funny. I finally found someone on Spark who likes to play funny like me.
I also weigh in my birthday suit but wait until my water pills start working as I swell badly but since I go to TOPS (take off pounds sensibly) and have become a KOPS (keep off pounds sensibly) they won't let me weigh in my birthday suit.

Good idea, Tiny! And I think I'm going to add another post entitled "Monthly Weigh In" so we can weigh in on here on the 1st of each month. So stop by tomorrow and "weigh in" -- it will be fun to see if we are really fluctuating wildly, or if little by little we are losing.

Eve,

Oh, well, what a great idea! I think 1000 is probably right for me too. At the end of almost every day, I'm plenty full and struggling to add another 200 calories.

Thanks for that info! Now I can be more relaxed about not reaching the 1200 mark. I know we shouldn't "go without eating," but surely everyone doesn't require the same amount of calories.

I'm going to try quitting when I'm full and relaxing about the "unused calories!"

Tiny, what worked for me was ignoring what the recommended caloric intake for me should be and I just quit eating when I was full. I do better at 1000 calories than pushing another 200 in just to make it to the recommended 1200.

I actually WAS NOT a yo-yo this month. I like to track my weight on a chart and it has been a steady down, Down, DOWN starting out at 145.2 and today 138.4.

Now if I can just stick with it. I must be doing something right, but what???

I guess you could call that being a yo-yo. You follow a sensible eating plan and exercise and your weight goes down -- then you decide you are OK and can eat whatever you please, and your weight goes back up. I guess it is pretty common with most people. That's why I have stopped using the word DIET. I'm looking for a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE -- so I'm looking for an eating plan I can maintain and I also know you have to exercise -- a least a brisk walk -- every day, or nearly so. Sure you can have a lazy day now and then, and you can even have a splurge once in a while -- but then you have to get back to your routine.

It doesn't really HAVE to be boring. It's up to you to make the right choices. I think the main thing is to try not to accomplish it all at once. First start drinking 8 glasses of water or liquid each day. Then maybe incorporate in exercise 3 times per week -- and keep adding or subtracting things until you've gotten yourself a "Healthy Lifestyle." It's working for me!

I've been looking over my calendar lately and I've noticed that for nearly the entire year I have stayed very close to 145 -- up a little, down a little! Wish I could learn how to make it stay in the lower numbers and not go up and down

Aren't I lucky that we don't have calories in Australia...so I can honestly say (with a little grin ) that there was zero calories in the cashews.
Ummm, but there were quite a few kilojoules, shhhhhhh!
I do weigh myself in all my naked glory in the mornings when I get up. Though lately I have resorted to trimming my toenails and plucking my eyebrows first, to try and get those darned scales to do what they should!

Do you realize how many calories there are in an entire cup of cashews? Very bad! lol I am lucky that I am not overly fond of cashews, but I do love pecans -- and pistachos are another nut that is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine. They say nuts are a healthy snack though, however you should try to eat only 1/4 cup per day.

I've found the best way to beat these up and down readings on the scale is to always weigh at the same time first thing in the morning (with nothing on, of course) and try to exercise at least a little EVERY DAY! Exercise and eating right go hand in hand.

Good Luck my new friend!

I wish I had found this forum yesterday!!!
I am trying so hard to lose weight . It is driving me mad that I KNOW I am eating all the right things in the right amounts. I have started walking for an hour every second day, yet the scales hardly move, and when they do they jump back the next day to more than they were before.
Last night, after the scales had jumped 800 grams in the morning, I lost it and ate a cup of cashew nuts!
I knew that I was being silly, but I ate them all.
Ho hum, time to get back on track again.

It used to be that I would yo-yo up or down by 2 or 3 pounds -- perhaps over a month or more before it would drop to the next LEVEL -- and start the process all over again.

Now, since the beginning of the year, I've stayed in the 142-pound range, just going from 142 even to 142.8 and all the choices in between. Just when I think maybe I break out of the rut and get below it, it goes up .2 instead. But at least it's lower.

I have lost the same 10 lbs over and over at least 2- 3 times a year. I work really hard for a month or 2... then something kicks in and I go back to my all my old habits.... I am on the verge of it again. the past 24 hours has been a bad 24 hours for "junk food" I just can't leave the sweets alone! I am determined to get up tomorrow- hit the gym- Not eat any more cookies and get back on track before all 11.2 lbs i've lost finds it's way back to my waist . *fingers crossed*

That is a good saying about junk food -- and when I say "junk food" I generally think in terms of food that you get at McDonalds,Jackin the Box, etc. When I think of cookies, pies, ice cream the term "junk food" does not enter my head, they are temptations. I'll admit if something is in front of you it's pretty hard to resist it, so the important thing is to keep it out of sight. I DO have a couple of "temptations" that I keep on hand, mainly peanut butter and some type of candy (like chocolate covered raisins/peanuts) -- so WHY do I do that? I figure it's going to get me through the night and keep me happy. I have learned that if the item is in front of me and I can reach out and indulge, I am more apt to just take a little nibble. And there are temptations that I have given up completely, and they are not even in my mind haunting me. Namely soda's. I tried to give up peanut butter but my body betrayed me. lol

I can see I'm one of those people where cutting back on calories do not work -- not unless it is combined with EXERCISE. Although I've been spending lots of time sweating out in the yard at 100+ degrees doing my yardwork -- the scale is still inching it's way up, up, up! It's really maddening when I am eating very little, and all good choices! I can only imagine what would happen if I were to pig out on top of not getting my workouts in!

Does anyone else have this problem when the weather is against them?

Hi Pylon -- luckily for me I've never been addicted to Fast Food -- in fact I haven't eaten it for at least 40 years now. If I do (I did one time about 2 years ago with my granddaughter) it makes me sick and I throw up. Honest to God!

My weight fluctuates on a daily basis. It might go down 2 or 3 days in a row, then it will pop up. Not a lot, sometimes just .2 or .4 pounds, which is only ounces -- but it's maddening to see that 2 to 4 lb. yo-yo going on constantly. The yo-yo gets into lower ranges all the time, but it's a constant up and down in my life.

Hello,

For me I can usually loose weight pretty well for about 5-6 months. Which is great, but then I get to a point where I start to think "I'm still doing great so I can eat this snack today.." "I look good, so its not a big deal if I eat this or that"

Before you know it.. its 5-6 months of unhealthy bingeing and the weight comes back. My biggest problem is fast food.. I love it and it can get out of control.

Sometimes I think it might be a psychological thing. I've always had extra weight and maybe whenever I get close to reaching my goals I start to pack on a few extra pounds so I don't have to change too much. People do treat me differently depending on my size and maybe I sabotage myself so I can stay safe in the types of relationships i have with people?

As far as the eating out.. there are lots and lots of tricks for going to restaurants. I won't post them here, but if you're interested you can message me.

I am not sure how being in Las Vegas will affect my weight -- although my daughter has a recreation room right at the end of her block -- and there are stairs to climb at her home too, that helps (or wears me out, one or the other). I do think I'll take my own scale with me so it's the weight that I am used to seeing. Some scales can differ by one or two pounds.

Sedona has come and gone -- did you read my blog about "A Week-end in Heaven" -- which is how I titled it? I love little getaways like that, and it ended up not being too disastrous on my weight, even though I ate a whole piece of pecan pie complete with two scoops of full-fat ice cream! It was worth it. It's the every day things that seem to get to me, like last night my boyfriend and I went to a Mex. food restaurant as the marguerita's were 99 cents each! Wow! I had two chicken enchilada's, but ate only one, plus only a small part of the refried beans and rice. I know the chips and salsa are a killer (the chips anyway -- but they are sooo good!

I think that is great idea Eve for me to kick the diet soda habit-- I at least have reduced down to buying it one bottle at a time instead of a whole 12 pack -- and that is infrequent -- next move -- get them gone completely.

Enjoy Sedonaemoticon

It will be nice to break up my routine a bit by going to Sedona. I do miss it up there, as I lived there for nearly 12 years before moving to the Phoenix area. Loved having all four seasons!

One pound gain wasn't bad at all, heck I'll probably do that just by being around these people for one night!

Have a great week-end everyone! Eve

Have a great time, Eve! My sister goes to Sedona for vacations and loves it there. She has sent some beautiful pictures of that area.

By the way, I'm back from Busch Gardens. It was 93 degrees at the park. In the 60's here in PA.
While we were gone a strong wind came up and broke a limb off of a pine tree. The limb fell on our pop-up camper but didn't do much damage. Just a little dent, thank goodness.
I gained 1 pound while in Williamsburg. Today I planned my meals for this next week and will go grocery shopping tomorrow.
Welcome to the new members!
To SCOTMAMA: thanks for the goodies!!!!

AARGH! My weight was up .8 this morning!!! And for the life of me I don't know why. These are the times it really gets to me. I ate OK yesterday, I went for a long walk -- there was no apparent reason for the increase! It's so irritating.

Well, I'll just have to be very careful today as first thing in the morning I'm driving to Sedona for an entire day and evening with dear friends -- and it will include dining out, plus (knowing them) some kind of "forbidden" breakfast. She comes from the French school of heavy handed real cream. Delicious but deadly!

Eve, I make smoothies nearly every morning for us. Try adding honey instead of the artificial sweetener. I use light vanilla soy milk, light vanilla yogurt and frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, mango, bananas, whatever I happen to have) then top it off with 2T ground flaxseed. They're an awesome breakfast!

You might even get REALLY drastic, Cathy, and just quit drinking soda's, diet or otherwise! I did, and I honestly do not miss them at all. I know that as you consume artificial sweeteners in many of our foods it is a good idea to curtail as many of them as you can. Each time I make myself a smoothie I put in one packet of artificial sweetener, and for me it makes them soooo much better, not everyone has my sweet tooth, I suppose.

So far in 2010 my numbers have not gone as low as they did prior to the beginning of the year. I blame boyfriends for this -- just too much eating in restaurants. It's not just bad choices either, it is portion control and the fact that they put WAY too much fat, salt, etc. in their food! I really, really hate to eat out more than once a week! Right now I am on a semi-cabbage soup diet. Don't follow the plan, but am careful about what I eat besides the foods allowed. I actually love the soup, but it has a tendency to get you running to the bathroom quite often (probably why you lose weight).

I get to a certain down point and then start back up again for a bit until I get so disgusted with myself that I start paying closer attention and start going down again. Right now though I have gone back up more than I have been doing usually. Part of mine right now I think is getting myself back to drinlking diet soda after I had laid off it -- as soon as I introduced that back in the scale started creeping back up again --- so what does that tell me -- that maybe I should kick it to the curb again maybeemoticon

I didn't do a spreadsheet for a year to figure it out but I have found that if I do not exercise in any one day, I probably will NOT lose weight, perhaps even gain a few ounces -- even if I ate all the right foods. So food and exercise TOGETHER are of paramount importance!! For me anyway.

My weight fluctuates daily. I created a Microsoft Excel worksheet with an entire year laid out in 12 rows. Each morning I'd weigh myself and enter that number in the appropriate cell. Over time I learned that weekends are my downfall. I guess I knew that without the fancy wancy spreadsheet, but it helped me prove my theory. I could also see the effects that exercise has on my weight.

I haven't used that since I joined SparkPeople. But it was interesting to look back at the year and actually see my weight over time.

Wow! Have fun at Busch Gardens -- I went to the one in Florida one time. I can see where it would be so easy to gain 5 pounds at an Amusement Park -- what do they serve that could be considered "healthy?" I found that true when I would go with my daughter and her kids to Disneyland, but luckily she would bring things like low-fat string cheese and things like that for us to nibble on. For the kids it didn't matter, of course (and I remember those days) but it helped me tremendously.

On afternoons when I'm going out shopping, to put a halt to the cravings that inevitably strike when I am out around restaurants and little snack places, I try to carry a 90-calorie snack bar with me. There are some that are quite good, and it keeps me on track.

And for those times when my weight just seems to be going up for no reason, I make up a batch of Cabbage Soup and eat it for 2 meals per day for 2 or 3 days in a row. Guaranteed to lose anywhere from 2 to 6 pounds. And put me back in good spirits.

My weight goes up when I take a trip which is very often in the summertime. My hubby and I are retired and we travel a lot. We have season ticket's to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and we are leaving tomorrow for a quick two day stay. I have trouble making good choices at an amusement park. I used to gain 5 pounds every time I went away. Now I TRY to exercise and eat better while I'm away and only gain a pound, or sometimes I don't gain anything.

Looking at my calendar I can see no true reason for my weight fluctuations. Perhaps the week-ends are a bit more likely to cause me to gain weight than during the week. I think it's because I'm more likely to eat in a restaurant then, and their food is loaded with salt and fat.

It may depend a bit on what's going on in my life too as I tend to turn to ice cream or salty, crunch type foods when I'm upset.
