No way I could handle a 1/2 marathon at this time in my physical shape. Knox has a 5K run\walk on March 10, 2013. My daughter, Elisabeth, and my better half are signed up to run. I'm currently walking 20 minutes a day and it will take me a while to get there. I have to build up strength in my right knee before I can attempt to run. I noticed that Sparks has knee strengthening exercises and I will add them as exercise starting today.Thank you for participating in our group. The group goals I've set up are for 10 minutes of exercise daily and something I can easily deal with at this time. I set the bar low to encourage everybody to do one thing each and every day. I walked 1.5 miles today according to my pedometer while walking around our local swap meet. emoticon emoticon

Sorry I have been MIA due to life getting in the way. Had a very hectic back-to-school week. Hoping to do better this week.

It really depends on when for me- weekdays are hard due to school. Three out of the four kids are in school and one has a different schedule. I make 4 trips to the school for drop offs and pick ups. Let me know when and I can try to make it. I would love to get together with you guys.

I can't make August 30 for Calico. I have a class that day for Search and Rescue training. I can do a Saturday or Sunday providing I don't have a commitment already.

Sunday it is. We can meet at 7:30 or 8:00. Which time is best for you? Any later than that and it gets difficult to paddle due to the wind. Be sure to bring a SparkLunch so we can picnic after. Donna, I still would like to go on Sun. Sorry that I have been MIA. I was gone last weekend-was 1 out of 29000 that participated in the River Regatta in Laughlin/Bullhead City. this is the first time I've been at my computer. What time should I meet you on Sun?

Regarding Calico, the only weekday I would be able to go is Tues. Aug 30th. My weekends for the month are already booked.

Excellent. I'll pick you up at 7am and I'll bring a lunch. Sorry your friend can't make it. Maybe another time. I enjoy eating lunch after kayaking also. Do you have some trail mix to bring? If you don't I can bring some for you. Do you prefer nuts and berries or tropical fruit mix?

My day at CTC went well. I'm working with a person I worked with previously. We work well together and get along well together. She is my counterpart at another institution. However, I"m tired tonight and hurting through my shoulders so I'm hitting the hay now. L8R

HI Donna how is your day going? Im pretty tired we were gone all day just got home and I'm trying to find the energy to go work out UGH.

So on Tuesday it will be just you and I again I will pack a lunch I enjoyed eating there in the outdoors although that wasp was annoying......LOL

I spoke to my friend and she can not make it. I can get up and be ready by 7 am again so when ever you want would it be ok to pick me up again?

I am super excited and cant wait to go I already am planning on having a better breakfast and I hope that will help me from getting any kind of motion sickness

Hi Donna Yes i would love to go on Tuesday I have already been telling people that I have a date so I cant make plans :) do you want to go about the same time or earlier?? I will talk to my friend today and see if she wants to go or not she has been very active at the gym lately so I dont know if she wants to break her cycle I was suppose to go with her but I have been very busy this week and have had no time to go at the times she goes.

the weekends are harder for me to meet up because of my husband being home but if I know ahead of time say a week or so Saturdays are kind of better for me unless we are meeting up with hubbies and I dont usually invite him to girl time :) ... LOL

Thanks, Carrie. I always enjoy my Sacramento trips. I do curriculum review for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. It's volunteer work, but they cover all expenses and I work with some really great people. Looks good on my annual activities report and really helps me write my own documents.

Tuesday, August 23 it is. Yes, let me know either way so I can plan the vehicle and number of boats to bring. I'll try to get more and better photos next time. Shall we bring our lunches again? I always enjoy a picnic lunch after kayaking. Maybe we can make it to the creek next time. I soooooo excited. This is such fun.

Carrie, I spend some time looking for the photo and apparently it didn't download. Paul already deleted it, but he said he put it on his computer first. When I can corner him to send it to me I'll forward it on to you.

Yes, you friend can come. I'll bring the two kayaks and my canoe for me. I might have to bring the big truck to carry them if they won't fit in my Ranger. It's and old beat up work truck, not very comfortable, but it will do the job and I can fit three people on the bench seat. We can shoot for Tuesday, August 23 if you wish.

Danielle, Calico is more of a tourist Western town than spooky, but it would make a fun meet up. Skating sounds good to me also.

The ghost town sounds like fun! I LOVE spooky stuff. I have also never been there so it would be cool to go and scope it out.

Skating on a Sunday is doable, I will have to find a way to juggle a little bit though. Sunday I normally do heavy fighter practice (I'm a part of the local SCA) followed by a social gathering at the local Pizza Hut. I am thinking the social gathering can be put on hold for a weekend though. They all know I am trying to get into shape and are being supportive.

Oh, I don't know if any of you guys like Renaissance fairs or not but there is going to be a BIG event in Bakersfield in October, it's called the Great Western War. We are planning on taking the kids and going up there for a couple days, lots of fun! I haven't been to one in YEARS.

There is a skating rink in Victorville and a bowling alley. Sundays at the skating rink is family day.

Calico is great and there is plenty of walking! In fact there is Maggies Mine to explore as well. Some climbing of stairs in there. And a hill can be climbed as well.

@Donna, great that you both spotted a bike trail at Silverwood. I know there is a great walking trail there too. Our 6th grade camped there and I remember one day we had a great walk and it was beautiful! Was searching online a few weeks ago and found the trail. I love being surrounded by big trees, water and wildlife!

On Saturday, August 20th I am planning on taking Donnivon (6) and Michael (8) up to the Trail of 100 Giants to go hike it. I would love it if anyone would like to go hiking with us. I'm planning on getting there around 11:00, hike around the trail a couple times before doing a picnic lunch and heading home.

Donna, the Trail of 100 Giants isn't steep at all. The incline only ever gets to 8%. It's a really easy but beautiful hike. I can even take my two oldest kids (6 & 8)

Skating! Wow, there is a thought. I know how to roller blade pretty decent. I haven't done that in over a decade! That would be cool, and I could take the two oldest kids.

Bowling would be interesting, I suck at bowling though lol. I have no aim. Again it's something the two oldest could do.

Just let me know where and I can try and make it. It has to be on the weekend unless it's something I can bring all 4 kids to (they are 2, 4, 6 & 8) otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it. I want to try and involve the oldest two in as many of the activities as I can to get them into healthy habits. They aren't overweight and I want to try to keep them that way, I wish my mom had shown me healthier habits it might have saved me some greif.

OH I would also love Ice Skating I havent been in OMG Years gosh I dont even remember the last time I have been I know I was Closer to the Ground for falling .........LOL

Roller Blading is fun but havent been in like 12 years or maybe 15 sold my roller blades many years ago.

bowling I just went on New Years Eve and had a blast I dont bowl very well but I try and I have fun and thats the least I can do :)

I just had another thought. I've been thinking exercise for meet ups, but there's nothing that says we can't do non-physical activities. I haven't been to Calico Ghost Town for years. That's only about an hour for each of us. We could to there for a day, have a picnic, and wander around the shops. There might even be a hike in the area since there is camping. Just a thought.

Danielle, how much incline does 100 Giants have? I'd love to give it a try, but I have to be careful of my knees. I can go up no problem, but downhill is painful it there is much incline for any distance,

Kathy, Carrie spied a bike trail at Silverwood Lake yesterday (good eye Carrie). Do you have a mountain bike? Danielle, do you have a mountain bike? If not I have a couple extras, but I'd need to get the tired fixed on one and the seat replaced on the other. That's doable. That would be a good meetup and a good workout. There are other trails around here also.

Lake Gregory has a great hiking trail that circumscribes the lake. It is one I can even do with my knees without any problem and is beautiful. The little town is quaint so we could wander around the shops afterward. We can bring a SP lund for after the hike. It would make a great outing.

I still like the bowling idea. I haven't been in a long time but it's been on my mind for about six months.

Hey, don't we have a skating rink around here somewhere? I have been skating in decades. I prefer ice skating. The closest rink is in Arrowhead. Haven't been roller skating since junior high but I'd give it a shot. They didn't have roller blades back then and I always wanted to try them.

Well, those are my thoughts for today. I'll keep thinking on it.

I'm glad you had fun. You did GREAT for your first time. I would love to take you out again. You are really fun to be with. I had a great time also and am very happy to have someone to do things with. I'd love to try the bike path there someday, but I am very slow peddling. It really makes my legs burn, but I enjoy it.

Glad you started feeling better. I was tired the rest of the day. It's been years since I've been active so it doesn't take much to tire my right now. I'll be glad when I build some stamina back up.

Let's plan another outing again soon. Thanks for going with me. It was terrific. emoticon

I came home and jumped into the shower and washed off the lake ate some soda crackers and sipped on my soda a bit and I am feeling a lot better.

Thanks, Kathy. We are both looking forward to it and I have the 21st set aside for you. I haven't been blowlling in years, but it's been on my mind lately. I love to hike as long as it isn't steep. My knees won't handle steep right now. Rock climbing doesn't take brute strength, but it's too hot this time of year. Maybe in the fall. Bike riding is always good exercise and fun. I try to come up with some more ideas. This winter we can snow show. If you can walk you can snow shoe.

I'm a bit jealous that I can't make it tomorrow! I hope you both have a great time!


I'm having trouble finding something to do for a team meet up. I need some feedback for activities. I am up for anything, within reason of course. I'm not into sky diving, not strong enough for rock climbing. I love tennis (running after the ball), racquet ball, walking, biking, learning to play golf, bowling, swimming, skating etc.
Please let me know what you would like to do.

Sounds fantastic. E-mail is great. I'll pick you up at 7:30 am, OK? No need to be nervous. It's really very relaxing. Although it can get very technical in white water or ocean, what we will be doing is easy to learn. You will get a workout, but nothing intimidating. I'm sooooo excited. Thanks for going with me.

I can pick you up if you provide me with directions. Send them via e-mail. I will probably bring cold chicken, finger veggies, and fruit for my lunch. Typical picnic food without the carbs and fat.

Hi Sparkers,

Anyone is welcome. I can accommodate myself and up to two additional paddlers. I do not want to go alone and will only go if one of you can come along so please RSVP if you can make it. Here are the details.

I would like to go this coming Tuesday, August 9. 8:00 am at Silverwood Lake. If anyone would like to go tomorrow I am available then also if you let me know today. We'll meet outside the main gate and go in together in my truck so we'd only have to pay one half price admission.

I have two kayaks and a canoe so I can accommodate two Sparkers who would like to learn. I can teach you. It's not hard to get started and it's a lot of fun, yet very relaxing. I'm new at with the canoe, so if I bring that we will be evening matched. I'll put you in kayaks because it is much easier to learn and I am experienced in teaching it.

Bring a healthy lunch for after. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet, including shoes (no bare feet). I prefer quick dry materials, but in summer anything will do. If you want to also swim, wear a bathing suit underneath. Bring sunglasses, hat with brim, and sunscreen for protection. Bring a towel and you may want a dry change of clothes for afterward.

I have all the gear for three including PFDs and paddle gloves. I have a dry bag for lunches if we decide to eat on the other side of the lake, but we may hang out in a small area the first time depending on how everyone feels. I have three hydration systems for water while we are kayaking, but bring what you want to drink with lunch.

I am a high adventure instructor for Boy Scouts so you can feel safe in my care and instruction. I don't take on anything I can't handle. I've been looking for kayak partners so this would be really fun. There are other activities we can do also, like rock climbing, snow shoeing, and such if you are interested. I have something for every season.

OOOPPPS....I did mean Sun. Aug 21st when I wrote about meeting up together! In any case the point is to get together as many as possible for a healthy activity.
Has anyone played the XBOX Kinect? Those games are quite a work out!

I don't remember mentioning any date in September. I'm back at work then. I was talking about this Tuesday, August 9. Are you available. It isn't hard to get started at all.

I used to drink green tea, now I drink white tea. It taste better and has more antioxidants. It's the same plant but picked younger so it doesn't have the acids but more benefits.

Kayaking sounds like Fun I have never done that before. Is it hard?? Do you need a wet suit??

Sept 21st is on a Weds I think you were just using an example :) but just thought I would let you know that :) I have a sewing class I am going to take on that day thats how I remembered it was a Wed.

I would also Love to meet up with the group How FUN Would that be :)

OMG I just tried some Green Tea all natrual HOLY SMOKES Im hyper as can be now...........LOL I have never tried green tea and heard it was good for you but didnt know it gave you energy

I would love to meet up once a month with the team! Whether we Kayak, hike, bike, walk, tennis, swim or whatever. In 2006 when I first started here on SP, the first two months I lost 20lbs. Then my husband returned home from deployment. I also had other women around me that were working to live healthy. I haven't had that around me in quite sometime.
Now that I have said hike, bike etc, I am not in very good shape so I'm not suggesting strenuous amounts of time. emoticon However they are activities I would like to do.
I work every other Sat (but booked both this month already) but I'm available every Sunday.
Suggestion: Sunday Sept 21 @ ? Doing? Let me know if you would like to get together!

Congrats on the Relay for LIfe, Kathy. I saw that, but I can't walk long distance yet becaues of my arthritis. When I beat it, and I will, I want to get back to hiking again. I used to do Badden Powell every Sunday. Maybe I'll be able to join you soon. Wish me luck on that.

Recently Rebecca and I were able to meet up on a Sat. morning to walk together. I hope to be able to do it on a consistent basis.
My next Sat. off is May 21 and I will be walking in the Relay for Life in Barstow. I am scheduled to walk from 9-11am on Sat and 7-9 am on Sun. If you would like to join me and keep me company I would love for you to be there!
I hope that others in the area will get together at times as well.
