This AM fasting 143 down from 145 yesterday AM. In looking back over my logs I see where the problem is. I had an idea that this is what I would find! I need exercise! Diet while not too bad will not take care of everything. Yes, I splurged earlier this week with the pizza and pizza leftovers. I need to walk which is something I enjoy - it is hard tho with the physical problems that make it so painful.Budget constraints keep me out of curves and places with pools. So what's a gal to do?!

It is, hon, it is indeed - and today I walked another 1-1/2 miles on the treadmill, plus whatever totes up at the end of the day doing the chores. Sooooo... tomorrow should tell the tale! :-D

emoticonemoticonCONGRATULATIONS!!!! 122.4 is a lot less scary than those other numbers.

I will be thinking good thoughts of you when I go walking later. If that is what is getting your BG down, it is just one more reason to love walking!!

They'd send ME on vacation if they heard me sing - I wasn't kidding when I said I can't carry a tune if you give me a stout bucket with a sturdy handle, lol...

Okay. Drumroll, please, here 'tis:

122.4!

Is it great? No, but it's a LOT better than the 160+ I was getting the last few days. What did I do differently? I walked almost twice as far yesterday. I walked well over a mile (usually I do about 3/4).

I didn't eat any differently (in terms of cals, carbs, amount, etc.) and I didn't do any more or less than I usually do (housework, chores) so I'm hoping it was the walking what done it!

It is, as the Brits would say, early days yet, and I only have a one-day's test to go by, but I plan to do the same thing today (in terms of the walking) and... we shall see.

L8R!

Jeannie,
You and Kasey,are going to have me thrown out of house and home! I was singing "Doom, Despair, and Agony on Me" all day yesterday. My husband and son asked me where that came from and I told them Kasey, of course. They threatened to send me to the UK to live with her emoticon! I've been singing Rawhide all night tonight and acting like I've got my whip after them! (new way to get exercise in) I told them I got this one from you emoticon! They said you lived closer they might send me that way instead of the UK! They didn't know yet and are debating! Now I can sing them this one tomorrow! Anyway you look at it I'll get to go on a wonderful vacation soon!emoticon

Taddy, hon - like most of us, I'm better at taking care of other people than of myself. I don't know if it's a woman thing or a Sparker trend, but I'm convinced it's true!

Now, why is the theme from Rawhide running thru my head? Something about a herd of turtles, no doubt... :-D

JW, that is absolutely fantastic! The 'Dtour' diet must be working. And of course the exercise you're getting doesn't hurt either, lol...

This morning, for the first time in months, I 'forgot' to take my fasting blood sugar. Yep, actually forgot. It wasn't even on the radar at all, after all this time. Tell me that wasn't a Freudian slip--! *sigh*

As Scarlett said, Tomorrow is another day. :-D

JW: yes it was! I am really having problems - I'm scheduled to see the GP again in (now) three weeks, but I really fear I'm going to have to take up another medication, as this 'race against time' isn't losing me enough weight fast enough for the blood glucose to return to more normal levels. Besides various problems with the additional medication, there's the problem that it REALLY, majorly slows metabolism - which means I lose weight even more slowly, which in turn means I need to be on it longer... eh. You know what Gilda Radner said, 'It's always something!' :-)

Gloria: The first week, they had us check several times each day - pre-breakfast, fasting; 2 hours post-breakfast; 2 hours post-lunch; 2 hours post-supper; and just before bed. That established a pattern, so we could see if anything appeared radically different, and it also served as a baseline so we could determine if the trend was increasing, decreasing, or staying fairly stable. If you do a fasting bg first thing in the morning, and another sometime during the day two hours after a meal (and as was pointed out before, time it two hours after you START eating, not when you finish the meal) you should have an idea of how the numbers will run. Then you can discuss the record with your GP / specialist (here, I go to a nurse practitioner), and they can then use it to help determine best treatment options.

And good luck, because personally, I think it's complicated, but I'm still convinced that EYE need to do this for myself, so - complicated or not, I gotta do what I gotta do. :-)

They said to vary it....this was the diabetes educators at the hospital where I took the classes...I felt like they knew what they were doing. We had a couple of classes, kept our bg readings several times per day, recorded them,then they looked at everyone individually...my diagnosis was very early, so (thank You, Lord)I have been able to control it with diet & exercist, checking once per day....other people there were told to check more times per day...

Jwaddell2 - has your nurse given you a "better" or more informative time to be checking 1 x day? Last eve at 10PM I was 177.
Late dinner, late med and just feeling yuck! This am is not much better either.

I have heard MANY people here on Spark say that they have cut down or eliminated many of their medications--especially Diabetes medications.
And I am currently reading a Biggest Loser book--100 Simple Swaps--and in it they mention that many if not most of the contestants come to the Ranch on many medications, and they leave with most of those medications GONE.

I do believe that diet (as in Nutrition, not Diet as in DIE-T) and exercise will help you toward getting rid of a lot of your medical issues.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pre-Spark tests that I can point to. The nearest I have been to any kind of health testing in the past 10 years (at least!) is the tests they do when you donate blood--cholesterol & blood pressure. Even those were over 3 years ago.
emoticonI do monitor my blood pressure and it is improving VERY slowly. Judging just by my endurance, breathing improvements, and how I FEEL generally I am sure that a lot of things have improved medically. I just don't have the documentation to prove that.

Jeannie, it occurs to me, now that you've had a year of Curves (that is, a year of regular exercise) plus have lost weight, do you have some kind of blood tests or other info pre-Curves and recently? Because certainly it would show (as I bet April's will too) that exercise has improved your stats. It must play a role. Improvement can't all be down to just ('just,' she says!) losing weight. I'm sure fitness helps as well.

Kasey, I agree you should compare your Own results to your Own results. Then add in advice from a Professional that you trust, and you can make educated decisions about your Own health.

April, I am anxious (good anxious) to see how exercise has affected your numbers.

Yesterday was unusual all around. Slept late, was up for a couple of hours before having a full breakfast, although I had a balanced snack. So I was off schedule for my meds, then after dinner could not remember what other pill I needed to take until 10 PM .... Oh the metformin (after checking bg) 188 duh! Today is more on th normal schedule so we shall see how things go - hopefully better results today.

My fbs this morning was 133.2. Not great but better than yesterday, so I'll take what I can get.

April, sometimes I think it almost doesn't matter what range 'they' set: maybe it's more important to compare our results to our results. In other words, if you numbers have improved since your previous test, you are doing better - and if they have gone up, even if they're still technically in a 'normal' range, it bears watching. Thinks me. But then, you know that medical diploma on my wall is a forgery, doncha? :-)

Anyhow, since I didn't post mine, here you are:

Cholesterol = 3.9 (normal: 3.1-5.2)
Triglycerides = 1.1 (normal: .2-2.0)
HDL = 1.2 (normal: 1.0-2.0)
LDL = 2.2 (normal: .1-3.87)
HbA1C = 5.6 (normal: less than 8.0)

Yes, the lab says 8.0, but Doogie says 7.0 and the nurse says 6.5. She's about my age, and tho she's not diabetic now she had gestational diabetes and she's certainly seen plenty of people with it, so I will go with her recommendation as to guidelines!

I know the cholesterol isn't the 'Americanized' scale, and somewhere I have a conversion formula, but I've gotten fairly used to the way it's scaled here, so as long as it's within the normal range (which it is) and as long as it's about the same as it was before (which it is) I figure I'm doing okay. I would like to see the LDL go down some in comparison to the HDL - or rather, if the HDL went up, and the LDL stayed the same or went down a little - that would be good. I'm going to give the Mediterranean Diet a trial run, at least for a couple meals a week, and see if the olive oil makes a difference. I also will be more aware of making sure we have salmon twice a week (instead of once), have avocado once a week (oohh, ain't THAT a hardship, lol...), and be sure to have the 'plant sterols' a couple times a day, and see what happens.

Everybody dozing now? Good. And you thought you'd have trouble getting to sleep, lol...

p.s. Not every 'horizontal V mark' is HTML. I think the SP tech-wizards should set it so the sign can be used (it's a math symbol, after all!) instead of getting that error message for 'No HTML.) Personal gripe... grumble grumble...

Here Are My A1C Results: Dated 01/12/2010

These are taken at the hospital I work at and I always march my happy self back down to the lab and get my very own copy! It has my breakdown of everything and tells me the normal range for everything.

GENERAL CHEMISTRY & NORMAL RANGE
Gly Hgb=6.7 NR= 4.7-6.7
Triglyceride=120 NR= 35-135
Cholesterol =166 NR= 100-200
High Density Lipoprotein=60 NR= 30-85
Chol/HdL Ratio = 3 NR= 0-3
Direct LDL =84 NR= 0-129
Urine Chemistry=3 NR= 0-30

I hope to do better next time. I had quit exercising when this was taken and things went up from the last time! So I really can tell how much exercise does for me. I should get my next one done in April. (which is my month!)

Oh, JW, I like that - I mean, walking twice a day for an hour total and that really helping her lose weight. And probably tone up as well. She's a real find. I wouldn't change doctors if I was you - the nurse is the one to go to! :-)

p.s. REALLY like (great sarcasm) the doctor leaving a message and on a Friday. Good bedside manner there...

I learned awhile ago that if I didn't keep up with my health issues, nobody else would - so read, read, read!!! My fine physician (not slight sarcasm) left the message ON MY PHONE that I had diabetes!!! On a Friday, yet!!! Good grief! I have talked to her nurse a bunch..she is diabetic, so has been an enormous help. Also, I finally met her my last trip in and she told me she had lost 100 lbs in the last year by walking twice a day for 30 min each! I had already found the Dtour diet, and she gave me the umphf to get going!! (umphf is medical term)

Yes, JW, you certainly got that right - as in 'nurse knowing more than doctor,' lol...

So far as I know (disclaimer there!) there's a pretty wide leeway for the range of bg readings. In the UK it looks as tho the NHS has set the range for HbA1C (which, BTW, has gone up somewhat for people over 70, as older people just have a higher 'normal' average in most cases) - here, the accepted range is less than 8 (and my paperwork doesn't list a 'low,' presumably because hyPOglycemia is not an issue for me as of now, but hyPERglycemia is). Now, the doctor said 'under 7.' The nurse said 'Yes, but that's a bit too high, 6.5 or less is what you should be aiming for.' From what I've read on the 'net and in various articles (plus talking to people I know with Type II) I agree with her, at least with keeping it in the low sixes.

As for the daily count - here, they use the same measuring system for the daily stick (!) as they do for HbA1C. In other words, mine should be between maybe 5.0 / 5.2 and 6.5 (fasting blood sugar). I have a converter, and it says... that would be between 90 and 120, which is fairly close to what you (JW) were told. (And I also was told to time it as two hours from the time I begin eating a meal, or fasting = first thing in the morning, pre-breakfast.)

Knowledge is power, so the more I read, hear, and learn from other people (thank you, JW & others!) the more informed I am - and the more informed I am, the better able to look after myself. And I suppose that's true for all of us: no doctor or nurse will ever know us as well as we know ourselves.

IMHO :-)

Let me share a little of what I have learned (more from my diabetes classes than the doctor, for sure) - maybe I am wrong in reading these questions in some of the messages. These are my daily ranges to shoot for: Fasting/premeal (this includes when you arose or right before you eat): 70-120 - two hours after a meal (two hours after you BEGIN to eat that meal) less than 160 - bedtime 100-140 Now, my doctor prefers the 160 to be lower....good grief, why did she send me to these classes?! H1C is different...I have read that the normal range is different for every lab, so you need to know your lab's normal range and don't go comparing yours to someone else's. Since my diab was diag really early, I only test once per day...I mean like in the morning, or maybe before and 2hrs after a meal, etc. I know others who have to test more often. As someone said out there, my doctor's nurse seems to know more than she does!!!

I know what you mean, Gloria. I haven't gotten any info really from Doogie about what the range of numbers should be, how often (or when) to stick, etc. But there's a nurse at the practice who is really good and on the ball, and she has been a tremendous help! The numbers here are not actually in the hundreds; they are things like '5.6,' the kind of numbers you see in the HbA1C. Now actually, I don't understand why the US doesn't use the same scale - the HbA1C scale - all the time instead of using one for everyday records (that is, the one in hundreds) and the other for the quarterly HbA1C. If you see what I mean.

We change the clocks tonight, and it's already past my (new) bedtime, so I better quit before I get totally confused, lol... 'night, Gloria! :-)

Kasey - You are lucky! I don't have "Doogie" I have Harry Potter's muggle uncle! Dr. told me to check 1xday so in lieu of a specific time I have been doing 10 PM That's usually 2 2-1/2 hrs post finishing the meal. I have come down from 297 to last night's 104 - that prompted about 1/2 c cereal with 1/2 c milk as I was feeling rather "squirrely". I do need to get clear on just what sort of numbers I need to be aiming for. If not then I better make friends with that feeling until I get used to having numbers in that range. Today is the 2nd day of taking 1000 mg on the metformin and I have felt like the bg is a little on the low side all day - ok if I eat every couple of hours, but still....

Thanx, Jeannie, it's a matter of hope 'n' pray, ain't? As long as my pancreas doesn't give up the ghost (yikes!) I figure it should work out eventually.

Meanwhile, yesterday I had the highest reading I've had in ages - 162! - and this morning the fasting bg was 145.8. You know what Gilda said, 'It's always something!'

Thanx especially for your words of encouragement - really helps when I know there are people supporting me on this trip. :-)

I don't know what to say, but I agree, one MUST have dessert!! Hopefully, Doogie can find the correct dose of medication, and with what you are doing Nutrition-wise, your body will soon come around.

Gloria: I don't think there's any way to see your info except nutrition itself or fitness, and then only if you have checked the 'Allow Others to See' boxes. I do have mine posted on my own stats and on my 'Other Goals' page. The only reason I would want to do this is because it helps keep it fixed in my mind (my poor ol' head, lol...) to serve as a reminder and to help keep me from thinking 'Oh, I can have _____, after all, my bg was really low this AM' or whatever.

April: okey-dokey!

(ahem) Shall I go first?

My fasting blood glucose this AM was 149.4, which is way more than it oughta be. I just took it this evening, by way of comparison, at the two-hour post-supper time, and it was a whopping 162. Doogie is going to be putting me back on additional meds, I can see it coming. *sigh*

For what it's worth, tonight for dinner I had a veggie-burger (plain, and the brand I get here is 119 calories), a cup of chopped cabbage-and-leek steamed, a 'veggie medley' (peas, corn, broccoli, carrots, and red peppers) that has 35 calories / serving, two cups of tossed salad with ONE tablespoon of Kraft Light dressing, and two canned peach halves (in fruit juice). Total calories = 303; total carbs = 43, of which 22 was the peach halves. *sigh*

Yes, I see it, but dammitoll, if I don't have fruit for dessert, I don't have any dessert, 'cause everything else is UNdessert.

Gah. Forgive me, ladies, for ranting.

I have been putting mine on the notes section of my nutrition tracker. Can you see those since the tracker is open to others to look at? If not I have no problem sharing in this thread. It's sort of like a weight loss challenge thread - if you are in you post if not just ignore it.
