awesome article and the p/b was yummi this morning. im gonna give it a go to get up to the 1200 this week but im hanging at 979 everday. remembering to eat every couple of hour is crazi. im only at 340 right now. that article was a tremendous help. thank you all

Your body needs 1200 calories just to keep your organs working. If you did nothing all day but breathe, your body will burn 1200 calories. Men burn 1500. If you burn 200 cals a day exercising, to stay the same weight that you are, you need to take in 1400 cals. I found an article that makes a very confusing subject, seem not so confusing.....
The part that Pat spoke of, is in the section called "starvation mode."
If you want to lose weight, you have to eat. Thinking we will lose weight by eating less is something that many of us on here had to learn. We were taught early in our lives to eat less. We all had to retrain our brain on this issue. Do you track your meals? Do you get enough nutrients in your day? Are you getting enough fat in your diet. Yes, good fats are good for you. Keeps your hair from getting frizzy. And carbs are for energy. And protein. Eating too little, will do harm to your body, and it is true, you will not lose weight. If you can't reach your suggested caloric amount, on trick that MAINEG8TR,co-leader of this team, taught me when I started, was to eat peanut butter. It will give your cals, fat, and protein a boost, without filling you up like a steak would. I too had the same idea when I started here, that I had to starve myself. You don't need to.
If you eat too few calories your body will hold on to fat and that hinders weight loss. I have been there done that never knew about it. There are a number of articles you can find on Spark to read about this. I hope you can find them. Pat in Maine

I cannot answer your question from a professional prospective, but generally speaking, it is rare that a person would have anything less thatn 1200 calories a day recommended. That seems to be the minimum for losing a reasonable amount of weight safely.
Also, SparkPeople uses the information you supply for exercise as well, Depending what you have entered for your daily activity, the program will calculate what you need to eat, in balancw with how active you say you are.
SparkPeople is all about healthy living, not a quick weight loss. It is only when we learn healthy habits that our weight will be truly in control. It may take more time, but it is definately worth it not to be on the diet rollercoaster anymore!
