INSECTS IN THE GARDEN
APHIDS: emoticon
1) To keep aphids and other pests off your roses: Finely chop 1 onion and 2 medium cloves of garlic together. Put ingredients into a blender with 2 cups of water and blend on high. Strain out pulp. Pour liquid into spray bottle. Spray a fine mist on rose bushes, making sure to coat both tops and bottoms of leaves.
2) Use aluminum foil around the base of plants such as tomatoes. The reflection confuses the insects and drives them away.
SPIDER MITES: emoticon
1) Combine 1/2 cup buttermilk, 4 cups wheat flour and 5 gallons water. Suffocates spider mites and other mites.
MEALYBUGS: emoticon
1) Apply rubbing alcohol to insect clusters with cotton swab. Wash with insecticidal soap and rinse. Isolate infected plant if possible.
CABBAGE WORMS: emoticon
1) Sprinkle flour on developing cabbage heads. The flour swells up inside the worms and bursts their intestines.
SLUGS: emoticon
1) Sprinkle salt directly onto slug. They shrivel up and die.
2) Place shallow bowl of beer on the ground near slug trails and leave overnight.
3) Copper wire? That's what Martha Stewart says. Coil a piece of wire around the base of your plants to give slugs a shocking experience. They won't come back.
emoticon GENERAL INSECT REPELLENT: To help protect fruits, vegetables and shrubs from insects attacks.
Recipe 1:
1/2 cup dead insects
2 cups water
When insects infest fruits, vegetables or shrubs, identify and gather the pests. Collect at least 1/2 cupful. Place in an old blender with the water. Blend on high, and then strain out the pulp using a cheesecloth or fine sieve. Dilute at a rate of 1/4 cup to 1 cup of water. Pour liquid into a spray bottle and apply to plants. Will keep up to a year, stored in a tightly sealed container.
Recipe 2:
3 hot green peppers (canned or fresh)
2 or 3 cloves garlic
3/4 tsp liquid soap
3 cups water
Puree the peppers and garlic cloves in a blender. Pour into a spray bottle and add the liquid soap and water. Let stand 24 hours. Strain out pulp and spray onto infested plants, making sure to coat both tops and bottoms of leaves.

Wilson Tennis Balls instigated this list, however I imagine any tennis ball would do the trick. lol
1- Store valuables. Make a two-inch slit along one seam of a Wilson Tennis Ball, then place valuables inside. If you hide the doctored tennis ball among your other sports equipment, remember not to use it.
2- Fluff your down jacket in the dryer and reduce static cling. Throw in a handful of Wilson Tennis Balls to fluff the down while the jacket is tumbling in the dryer.
3- Childproof the sharp corners of furniture. Cut old Wilson Tennis Balls in half or quarters and use Scotch Packaging Tape to tape the sections over sharp corners of coffee tables, end tables, cabinets, dining room tables, and other pieces of furniture that might be dangerous to a small child.
4- Make parking cars in your garage easier. Hang a Wilson Tennis Ball on a string from the garage ceiling so it will hit the windshield at the spot where you should stop your car.
5- Prevent a chrome trailer hitch from getting scratched. Slit a Wilson Tennis Ball and put it over the trailer hitch as a protective cover.
6- Make a walker glide more easily. Cut a hole in two Wilson Tennis Balls and fit them on the back feet of the walker.
7- Give yourself a foot massage. Roll your foot over a Wilson Tennis Ball.
8- Make a back massager. Put several Wilson Tennis Balls inside a sock and tie at the end. This is frequently used by the labor coach to massage the back of a woman in labor.
9- Remove cobwebs from unreachable places. Wrap a Wilson Tennis Ball inside a dust cloth secured with a few rubber bands, then toss at the distant cobweb.
10- Play "basket tennis." Remove the bottom from an empty coffee can, and nail the can above the garage door. Use a Wilson Tennis Ball to play basketball.
11- Strengthen your grip. Squeeze a Wilson Tennis Ball in each hand.
12- Prevent snoring. Sew a Wilson Tennis Ball inside a pocket on the back of your pajama top to prevent you from sleeping on your back.
13- Prevent a deck chair from slipping through the cracks of a dock. Slit four Wilson Tennis Balls and fit them on the feet of the deck chair.
14- Make a back massager. Put several Wilson Tennis Balls inside a sock and tie the sock at the end. This type of massager is frequently used by a labor coach to massage the back of a woman in labor.
15- Keep your car door open without wasting the battery. Wedge a Wilson Tennis Ball into the door jamb to depress the interior light switch.

Baking soda has many different uses in the household. Here are some hints to use it in the following ways:
1) To make your own baking powder, stir and sift together 2 parts of Cream of Tartar to 1 part baking soda and 1 part cornstarch.
2) Be sure to keep an extra box of baking soda by your stove in case of grease or electrical fire. Scatter the powder by the handful to safely put it out.
3) Keep a container of baking soda in your garage as well as in your car to put out a fire. It won't damage anything it touches.

1) A dampened paper towel or terry cloth brushed downward on a cob of corn will remove every strand of corn silk.
2) Here is a good thing for the summer, for those people who like to sit and enjoy the outdoors, but don't like those pesky mosquitoes.
Put some water in a white dinner plate and add just a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dishwashing soap. Put it on your patio.
I don't know what attracts them - the lemon smell, the white color, or what - but mosquitoes flock to it, drop dead and fall into the water or on the floor within about 10 ft.

1) Wipe your dog off with a drier sheet after you brush him/her. This helps to remove loose hairs that stay on his/her coat. It also makes your pet smell nice, too.
2) Keep a spray bottle mix of water and a little laundry softener in it on hand to spritz a cloth to dampen it. Use it to wipe dog hairs off of yourself after brushing your pet. You can also spritz it on your pets rugs (or your furniture) before you sweep them. This really helps get the dog hairs off.

1) To remove onion, garlic or bleach or other odors off one's hands: Hold a stainless steel knife (not a cutting knife, more like a butter knife) under cool running water..the smell will be gone from one's hands in a matter of about 10 seconds..any stainless steel utensil will do, though.
2) If you run out of anti-static dryer sheets after you take the clothes out of the dryer, run a metal coat hanger down he material, and give it a shake. This will remove the static electricity.
3) Before painting, scrubbing the oven, or digging in any dirt, scrape some soap from a wet bar of soap under and around your fingernails..this will prevent other things from getting under your nails..this is a hint for people who start out using rubber gloves or garden gloves, and then pull them off half way through the job.

1) To get the most juice out of fresh lemons, bring them to room temperature and roll them under your palm against the kitchen counter before squeezing.
2) To easily remove burnt-on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stovetop - skillet will be much easier to clean.
3) Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato-based sauces - no more stains.
4) When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead - no white mess on the outside of the cake.
5) If you accidentally over-salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a peeled potato - it absorbs the excess salt for an instant "fix me up."

1) To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.
2) To prevent egg shells from cracking, add a pinch of salt to the water before hard-boiling.
3) Run your hands under cold water before pressing Rice Krispies treats in the pan-the marshmallow won't stick to your fingers.

1) Cure Mange ~ While spraying a dog with WD-40 gets rid of parasitic mites, according to USA Today, the WD-40 Company, feeling that the potential misuse of the product is too great, refuses to condone using WD-40 to cure mange on animals.
2) Prevent squirrels from climbing into a birdhouse ~ Spray WD-40 on the metal pole or wires.
3) Remove a ring stuck on a finger ~ Several medical journals claim that WD-40 is the perfect cure for a toe stuck in the bathtub faucet, a finger stuck in soda bottle, or a ring stuck on a finger.
4) Remove chewing gum, crayon, tar, and Silly Putty from most surfaces ~ Spray on WD-40, wait, and wipe.
5) Clean decorative snow from windows ~ Spray windows with WD- 40 before spraying with artificial snow so the decorative spray will wipe off easier.

When preparing something for a meal leave two extra large empty bowls near where you are working. Put your food waste in one and trash in the other. It will save you time and steps while your working. When your finished there is no need for sorting; put the trash in the garbage can; put the waste in a compost to nurture your garden.

Do something for someone else who needs it (take your neighbors children for a hour or more to give them a break, visit someone, make some kind of food & take it to someone, etc.) when your feeling like a self-pity party and somehow it always seems to make you feel better.

When feeding several people during the week it is time affective to cook (part or all) your meals ahead by just doing several meals at once. Yesterday I had two crockpots going and my oven and range. My meals are planned for the most part for this week. It is allowing me less stress on working days and made my house smell and feel warm all day. Having three extra bodies living with us has changed how a lot of things get done. lol

If you are painting and are going to continue the following day ... you can wrap your paint brushes (including the foam stuff) in plastic wrap and not have to clean it up until your done painting the next day. I've done this many times and it works great.

If you run out of toothpaste and can't get to the store try mixing baking soda and table salt together to brush with. When I was a child our family dentist recommended we use this combination as our daily paste. It works well but you don't have that minty taste. lol Keep smiling sunshine.

Carol the mothballs have such an odor that it actually repels the animals and since the mothballs are buried (shallowly) they aren't an attraction to play with either. But as you said it always best to be cautious!

If you are needing to use a weed cloth around plantings a great alternative is newspapers. You can recycle them by placing them folded in half in the area they are needed and cover them as you would any weed cloth. The paper is biodegradable and lasts about two years. I find the papers are actually easier to lay out and are most definitely cheaper. emoticon

Be careful of the mothballs because even on the box it tells you it is harmful to animals. So watch out for your cats and dogs.

When having difficulty keeping animals out of your garden (food or other) try inserting mothballs every few inches around the perimeter. You can get a box of the mothballs from the "Dollar Tree" so it is cheaper than most sources and it really works. My cats no longer destroy my plants in or out of the pots. Yeah!

I recently discovered research on Grapeseed and Safflower oils that indicates their high levels of linoleic acid actually help your body lose weight. Another benefit is both oils have very high smoking points, so they are excellent for cooking/deep frying. Grapeseed oil also increases HDL (good) cholesterol. Chicken fingers are back on the menu!

Don't forget to do something for yourself, especially when you accomplish something you have never been able to do, something you wanted to do, you get the idea. It may seem "small", but in reality it truly is BIG!

Choose your friends carefully

Be sure your friends are supporting you. Many will pretend they are then offer you cake and say 'you deserve it'. Stick to your rules and be sure your 'real' friends know them too :) xx

Due to this heat wave which we are experiencing, it is best to drink lots of water and stay cool. Avoid soda as much as possible. Water will quench your thirst, but soda will make you thirsty. Go for that big glass or bottle of water.

Use storage bins to keep your Tupperware organized. Anything that doesn't have a pair (bottom, but no lid), toss it! Put all of your Tupperware in the storage bin and it slides perfectly in & out of the cabinet. This will eliminate taking out everything in the front to get to things in the back.

I find that making a "date" to walk or exercise with one or more persons several times a week motivates me to be more consistant about really doing it. When others are expecting me to be there it gives me the extra push to get out the door. Example: Monday = team mall walk, Tuesday = church (Victory Challenge) park exercise & walk at park, Wednesday = friend at the YMCA, Thursday = team mall walk, Friday = biking with grandchildren, Saturday = yard work with dh

Keep a healthy (pre measured and bagged) snack and water bottle in your car. When you have that sudden urdge or are out longer than expected it helps to have it there to stay from the drive through binge. I even keep a bottle of lipton green tea that seems to give me that energy boost when needed or I just don't want water.

Set your table with dishes, glasses and silverware before leaving for a full day out. When you return it is less stressful to already have this done and is magnified if you put your dinner in the crock pot or pick up your dinner on the way home.

Always leave a pen and paper near your home phone, by your bed, in your car and on your person. It makes life less stressful if you write down your thoughts, needs and ideas when you get them instead of waiting and then forgetting.

When you make up your favorite meatloaf try putting it in your muffin pans. It cooks in 20 to 30 minutes in the oven and are already serving size. Any leftovers can be frozen and thawed quickly when needed for one or more.

Set your timer for a "speedy" seven (7) minutes and do rush about to declutter your home. Start near the entry to your house and go through the most seen and or traveled areas first. This is NOT the time to vacuum or dust ... do as much as you can in that 7 minutes. Have the entire family join in and see who gets the most done in the allotted time. You will be amazed how much gets done this way and it will be make you feel better when your day trys to get away from you.

If you have a container that you can't clean out because of it's shape ,,, drop a denture tablet in it with some warm water and let it sit as per directions. It does a great job on bud vases!

Life happens and healthy habits may be interrupted by stress, lack of time, holidays, partying etc . . . . But what's important is how we bounce back to a healthy routine and move on.

Leave a bowl out with pre-measured emoticon healthy treats in individual zip bags for munching. I have nuts, dried fruits, granola, home made cookies, etc. This keeps me from over indulging and helps me keep track of the snacks and calories easily. Visitors and family that come over regular know that they may grab "a" bag of their choice without needing to ask, making them feel right at home. emoticon

Shaving cream will clean granite beautifully with a wet sponge. It doesn't scratch and leaves it gleaming.

Make a Healthier Meatloaf!

Instead of using ground beef to make meatloaf, buy ground turkey. It's leaner and less calories. Also, use whole rolled oats (oat meal) as a binder instead of bread crumbs. Tastes AWESOME and adds fiber too. YUM!
