Great suggestion on the hoe markings.
Will you start up the new one for next year or do you need me to do it?

Monday tip: Mark a hoe handle with the measurements of 12,18,and 24 inches. This helps space plants or rows uniformly and saves time.

Monday tip: Save the silica packets you find in vitamin bottles and shoe boxes. Place one packet in a plastic bag with dry seeds you've collected from the garden. This keeps them dry and prevents deterioration,so more seeds will germinate when planted. You can keep seeds for several years this way.

Did U Know? Protect hands from steel wool: that steel-wood pad can be just as tough on your skin as it is on those stubborn food bits stuck to your holiday pots and pans. The easy fix: cut an orange in half and scoop out the fruit with a spoon, then insert the steel wool into the peel. The orange skin will act as an easy- to-grip protective barrier between your skin and the scouring pad.

Monday tip: To protect perennials from harsh winters, cover beds with landscape cloth. This allows moisture and air to go through while still protecting the plants. since it blocks light, remove it as soon as plants start growing in spring. Cleanup is easy. Even my tea roses do well under this covering.

Deer coming in your yard for Breakfast? Try this, I did and it worked for my herd of deer. Got the idea from an article from a garden center.

Inexpensive, nearly invisible deer fence

If you are dealing with deer – here is an idea you might wish to try: A nearly invisible fence made from fishing line. It is quick, easy, low cost, and it works! Put up 6' green garden stakes about shoulder high every 25 to 30 feet apart. (I used regular fence posts and some bamboo poles I had). Run fishing line at waist and shoulder heights, about 3' and 5'. I used clear monofilament line, however you can get green tinted if you wish. Deer are very skittish and spook easily. They can't see the fishing line and panic when they bump into it. And back into the field they went.

Deer also can't turn by bending their bodies. For a gate, just overlap the fence by about 3' and leave yourself a narrow path between the sections. Smaller animals, (rabbits, armadillo) will not be bothered by the fishing line so if they are also a problem then a low run of chicken wire or similar fencing may be necessary. Could use 24" tall chicken wire and buries it 3" to 4" to discourage critters from tunneling under.

Also for hiccups, drink a small glass of water through a linen dish towel. Works for me. I learned that trick from a bartender in my partying days. Long time ago!

Merry Christmas! Linda

Monday tip: Save branches from discarded Christmas trees to protect perennials, bulbs,or dwarf shrubs from winter exposure.

Did U Know? Fast-acting hiccup cure: If you suddenly get a case of the hiccups while out to dinner- try sucking on a slice of lemon for a few seconds- the sour-tasting fruit will give a surprising jolt to our system that will interrupt the diaphragm spasms that cause hiccups,so you'll be breathing easy in no time.

Mothballs will help to keep snakes out of your garden. I get the kind that is suppose to smell like lavender, it doesn't really but it doesn't smell like regular mothballs either. I sprinkle some in my garden shed and wellhouse also. Tested it one time when I saw a snake go into the wellhouse and it wasn't very long before he slithered right back out and left the yard. Suppose to work for cats also but I've never tested for that.

And if you have a varmint in your yard, go grab the bathroom cleanser and spray it at their faces---they will be hurt and leave the area quickly---maybe not too humane but if you see a varmint in your area during the daytime, you need to worry about them having rabies.

Monday tip: attract butterflies to your garden? Butterflies love the smell of beer? Then sit back, relax and watch pretty insects flutter about.

Monday tip: rid of Japanese beetles? Set a pan of soapy water on the ground about 25 feet from a a plant you want to protect. In the center of the pan, stand a can or jar with a inch or so of grape juice in it. ( Japanese beetles go ga- ga for grape juice!) then cover the top of the can with a piece of window screen. The beetles will make a beeline for the juice, fall into the water, and die happy.

Did You Know? Pain- free key to gorgeous brows? Turn to chamomile tea. Steep a bag in warm water for 5 minutes, then dip a cotton ball in the brew and apply to skin pre- plucking. You got me curious about the PH level for growing artichokes and I found this really nice chart for the PH for not only artichokes but a number of vegetables.

www.thegardenhelper.com/soilPH.htm

You can buy a PH meter at most good nurseries for under $10. It is a great tool to have especial if you grow any acid loving plants!

Leftover coffee, is there such a thing? But seriously, you can also mulch around your artichokes and any acid loving plant with used coffee grounds. Even though most of the acid leeches out into the coffee, the grounds are still slightly acidic so the make a great mulch for those plants.

Monday tip: The quickest way in the world to dry herbs: Just lay a sheet of newspaper on the seat of your car, arrange the herbs in a single layer, then roll up the windows and close the doors. Your herbs will be quickly dried to perfection. What's more, your car will smell great.

Did U Know? No more hot-glue strings! Place your sticks in the freezer for 20 minutes before using. This helps ensure that the sticks arent' exposed to moisture in the air, which is the main cause of strings.

I'm playing "catch-up" on this board. I'm going to try to force my rhubarb in my garage, like you suggested. We got an early snow yesterday (in SW Montana), but are expecting a warm weekend.

Monday tip: Gophers: before you plant bulbs, line the bottom and sides of holes ( or entire planting bed ) with 1/2 inch mesh wire. to keep wire from restricting root growth, set it about 3 inches below the deepest- planted bulbs. Include blue bells in your bulb garden- gophers won't go near the pretty little things.

Did U Know? Uses for tennis balls: If you worry about the little angel in your life bumping his head on the edges of your table when he comes to visit, try this: Grab four tennis balls and make a small slice in each, then stick one ball over each of the tables sharp corners. The heavy- duty rubber will provide a buffer that helps protect any-one who accidentally bumps into the furniture.

The red pepper really works. Tulip bulbs are like candy to squirrels. There are lots of squirrels around where I live and I haven't lost any bulbs since I've been using the red pepper.

Never tried salt but it does work without the abrasion and you won't be wasting the salt.
Another good tip is to sprinkle red pepper on your bulbs as you plant them---keeps squirrels from eating them----and I go extra and sprinkle it in the hole, on the bulb, on top of the bulb, and on the area after I am finished---I have not lost a tulip bulb for the last 3 years---and last year I forget to spinkle after I cleaned out the flower bed of the annuals and they still did not bother them.

I want to share an old tip---when you cut up onions or anything else that leaves a weird smell to your fingers, take a stainless steel spoon and rub it on your fingers and hands---it will take away that smell.

Monday tip: I liked to force Rhubarb indoors during the winter so I can have more of it during the year. I just wait until the leaves have died back, dig up one or two plants, and plant them in pots that I keep outside. Once the air's freezing,I move them in the garage. The cool temperature and darkness in there are prefect for getting good stalks. About a month later, my rhubarb's ready.

Did U Know? Sick? Cozy up without having to get up? Have a box of tissues- pop up kind- and place a empty one next to it.. place 2 large rubber bands around them. Then you got a box for toss used tissues.

A packet of sugar will also relieve the burn when you bite into a pepper that it too hot. Just let the sugar dissolve in your mouth, it mixes with the oils from the pepper and allows you to swallow the oils and get them off your tongue.

Monday tip: To have garden twine handy when you need it,just stick a ball of twine in a small clay pot, pull the end of the twine through the drainage hole, and set the pot upside down in the garden. Do that, and you'll never go looking for twine again.

Did U Know? Instantly soothe a burned mouth: If you accidentally singe the roof of your mouth on a hot slice of pizza, place a pinch of sugar on your tongue and hold it against the sore spot. As the granules melt, they'll stimulate the release of endorphins- feel good brain chemicals that help ease the pain.

You can also cut a paper plate to fit around the plant to keep them out of the soil.

Monday tip: Deter your cat from digging in large potted plants by placing inflated balloons on top of the soil. After popping a few balloons with its claws, the cat won't be tempted to return. Or cut pieces of bubble wrap to cover the soil, leaving slits for water to get through.

I just posted my horn worm pictures ... check them out. I'm learning a lot about the pesky critters ... they do love my tomato plant! So far I have two that became hosts for the parasitic wasps that help destroy the worms (hopefully before they do too much damage) they get to stay on the plant since they probably aren't going to do much more damage now that they are being exterminated from within! 2 others have been drowned in soapy water ... other options are to cut them in half, or just squish them.

Now I have to remember to turn the soil real well next hear to kill the new larvae that will hatch and eat up next years crop.

Yes you can leave them in the potato will keep for weeks? I would put a little bit of water in the vase so the potato will not dry out? Or keep a eye on it and if it looks like the potato is drying out then add a little bit of water to the vase?

Actually thinking this would be a neat idea for those who do flower arrangements for a show---they would not have to worry about water and could hide the potato in their design.

Monday tip: When I send cut flowers to my friends: I take an ordinary potato, cut slits in it, and insert the stems into the slits, making sure that they are securely fastened in. Then pack up the potato flowers for shipping. I've found that a potato will keep moist flowers fresh for up to two weeks in moderate temperatures.

Monday tip: When fully loaded with fruit, eggplants sometimes have trouble holding themselves up, so it's smart to support'em before they keel over. Our favorite stake is a small extension- type curtain rod. We stick it in at planting time, and as the plants grow,we can easily adjust the rod upwards so that i is always at the right height. This works great for supporting pepper plants, too.

Monday tip: To keep small flower pots moist in the summer. Take a bag of cheap sponges and tear them into small pieces ( 1-2 inches squares ) and put them in the bottom of your pots of annuals before you add soil and plant. Now you only have to water them once a day!

Monday tip: Miracle Mix- Black Spot Remover Tonic: At first signs of black spot on your roses leaves, us this tonic: 15 tomato leaves, two small onions and 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol. Chop the tomato leaves and the onions into fine pieces, and steep them in the alcohol overnight. Then, use a small,sponge-type paint brush to apply the mix to both the tops and bottoms of any infected rose leaves.

I have lots of hostas and the slugs really love them so I will give the formula a try to see how it works.
