Hi everyone, "acceptmyself" has "stickied" a daily chat thread. Why not jump on? I posted a question there that I was wondering if anyone knew. Jewell

Here are some questions about Chapter 6. If you haven't gotten to that Chapter yet, don't continue reading this.

1. I think Charlotte should have told Maria about Mr. Card's feelings before he proposed to Maria. Maria might have been more prepared and kinder to him if she had known ahead of time. What do you tink?

2. Charlotte felt guilty about preferring to read novels. Can you imagine only reading sermons and the like?

3. One reason I initially liked Mr. Edgington was that he said he didn't think women should be subjugated to men, and that they should be allowed to enjoy life as men did. But Charlotte, though she agreed with him, felt a little wary of him. Any thoughts?

I finished the book and really enjoyed it. I can't really compare the characters tp previous book as I haven't read them.

1. I feel like she is the same Charlotte, with a touch more disdain for Mr. Collins. Jaded by the marriage and loss of a child perhaps? It made me sad that she was so unhappy in her marriage and had lost a child.

2.Good question - would it have remained with Elizabeth and Jane's mother if the father died first?

3. I loved Mr. Basford from the beginning.. I guess I can relate to him emoticon . I too was creeped out by Mr. Edgington and felt that there is much foreshadowing goin on with his character.

4.Adorable couple!!! At the end of 5 chapters I was not sure thier fate but feel that it would be positive. I agree on the comparison of Jane and Mr. Bingley... and would it actually work out because of their statuses.

Anyone have more new discussion points ?

Is everyone up through chapter 10?

I am excite to hear what everyone is thinking!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for beginning the discussion! emoticon Sorry I was on vacation and just got back and am trying to get into the swing of things. I actually finished the book on vacation and loved it.

I will backtrack through the discussion and add into a little later.

Thanks!

Michelle

1. My first impression of Charlotte was that she was the same. As they elaborated on the fireplace it showed her dutiful submission. Why a woman would sette for such an intolerable partner, I can't explain. But her desire to marry was far stronger.

2. I think the estate would now go to Jane or Elizabeth's husbands.

3. If you could take who they turned out to be and switch them, that was my first impression of each one. I knew Charlotte would end up with Mr. Basford.

4. It is difficult to remember what I specifically thought back then, since I'm several books ahead. But philosophically I'm still dismayed by the fact that women were kept in such a box.

Here's a few questions to get us talking about Charlotte Collins:

1. What was your first impression of Charlotte? Does she seem like the Charlotte who was introduced in Pride and Prejudice?

I think for the most part, she did seem to be the logical Charlotte, but she does have some "Elizabeth Bennet" humor in her. When she was thinking about Mr. Collins' obsession with describing fireplaces, she thought to herself that she almost wished fire had never been invented, so that she wouldn't have to listen to Mr. Collins go on about fireplaces.

2. Since Mr. Collins died without an heir, who would inherit the Bennett estate? (I don't think the book mentions that, but I'm just wondering.)

3. What was your first impression of Mr. Basford? Mr. Edgington?

Charlotte disliked Mr. Basford immediately - I immediately thought "Is he going to be her Mr. Darcy?" But then she met Mr. Edgington, who she felt uncomfortable with, and then I wasn't so sure. Mr. Basford had a twinkle in his eye, but Mr. Edgington made her want to go home.

4. What did you think of Maria and Mr. Westfield?

I kind of compared them to Jane and Mr. Bingley. But I also wondered if she was a little like Lydia, since she was a little thoughtless. (Remember, these questions are coming from the first two or three chapters and these were my first thoughts. Eventually, I stopped comparing them to Pride and Predudice - for the most part, anyway.

Okay, that's all I've got for now. I can't wait to see what you thought.

Thanks Linda I'll check it out. Carol. I started reading it again last night. I got almost through it.
BUT, I listened to it when I went to bed and when I woke up this morning I still had ear bud in my ear and book was almost finished. I had to backtrack to chapter 2 as that was the spot I could remember.

I'm ready to talk about the first five chapters. How do we start?

For those of you who are Austen virgins (!) I recommend The Annotated Pride and Prejudice for Kindle. I read it last year, and it explained a lot of things I hadn't really understood, about the times and expressions during Austen's life. It's $9.99 for the Kindle.

I haven't even started the book. I never read any of jane Asten's books and was going to try reading them first but it's just not happening. I can't seem to get the Spark read either. I have read a few of the free books from Kindle tho. I use the ear phones when I go to bed at night but fall asleep and then have to back track in the morning. I need to get off the computer and read.
Hope you all have a pleasant evening.

I like your idea of starting a thread at the end of certain chapters. Who should start it?

"Listen" sounds like a good read. And the price is right. Should we take a vote?

Maybe we could start a thread at the end of certain chapters. Then we can discuss at our own pace w/o giving away the book to anyone that hasn't gotten there. I'm suggesting this because I've read three books since then and what's hot on my mind is what I'm reading now.

Actually I want to suggest this book. It's called "Listen" and it's on the free list. It is designed for book clubs, is a quick read and has discussion questions in the back.

What do you think?

That's a good question. I was kind of waiting for the discussion to start, but maybe everyone else was too. Maybe we should set a deadline, such as the end of the month, for the book to be read, then start the discussion in March.

Have we decided on the next book to read? Maybe we could start reading a new book in March to be discussed in April, and so on.

Another freebie and a quick and great read was "Hide in Plain Sight" Marta Perry

I am reading Lydia's Story, but agree it is not the best, BUT remember she was a giddy, silly girl and thus the book follows.

I got Lydia's Story today, it's a free Kindle book! I read the reviews, most people don't like it that much, but I still want to read it. I loved Charlotte, Ms. Becton made her seem much more real to me. Of course, I think Jane must meant her to be one of the minor characters.

I did something last night I haven't done since a teen. I started this book earlier in the week. last night I did my usual read before bed until my eyes get heavy. That was 9:00pm. I couldn't stop reading! I finished close to 1:00am! I'm going to pay for it today, but I really enjoyed this book. Some of the themes I saw were "don't judge a book by it's cover" in relation to the characters, and the damage gossip can create. I know there are more, but guess i need more rest before they come to me:)! thanks for suggesting this book!

I just finished Charlotte last night, I really liked it. Although I wish she had seen more of Elizabeth. I could just imagine Elizabeth feeling bad for her old friend, and rushing to her aid. But Charlotte's new friend stood up for her wonderfully. Can't say anything else, in case some of you are still reading it, and don't want to put out any spoilers!

Linda: So far "Lydia's story" is okay, and worth a read, but not as good as Charlotte Collins. How is Mrs Darcy's dilemma?

I'm reading four right now and they are all winners that I can recommend. Great Expectations, Hiding in Plain Sight, Lydia Bennet's Story, Letter's of a Woman Homesteader.

How far is everyone in "Charlotte Collins"?

Wow, another one? There's also Mrs. Darcy's Dilemma, which starts out with her children in their 20s. Except for their daughter, who is about to "come out." At least, that's what I remember of it, I just have the sample on my kindle.

I'm really liking Charlotte in this book, although I understood why she married Mr. Collins, and didn't dislike her for it. Gotta go and see what's happening. Charlotte and her sister have arrived in London, to escape from Maria's scandal. Really enjoying this book!

I'm about 25 percent through the book and I'm liking it too. It's cool to think what might have happened to Charlotte. So far, a lot of the characters are reminding me of the characters in Sense and Sensibility. Especially Maria (Marianne Dashwood?) and Mr. Westfield (Mr. Willoughby?) I think Maria is going to get her heart broken like Marianne did-what do you think? She even has a rich, nice man waiting for her.

I have a feeling if I lived back then, the best I could hope for would have been a governess. Or I would be a housekeeper, depending on which class I was born to. Their class divisions were as bad as our white vs. people of color have been here. (I do think it's kind of funny that Charlotte considers herself poor, but still has two servants.)

I'm so glad we started this book club. I love talking about books to other people.

Downloaded the book last night and just started reading it. Wish I had more time for reading as, so far, this does look like a good book. I probably would have fared ok in this time period, relying on men, as it probably would be the only way of life I would know. Today, though, after living life taking care of myself and a family, it would be hard to go back in time to the 1880's ways!

I began the book yesterday and it is very good. I have read 90% according to my kindle. (Oops, it was so good that I couldn't put it down.) I always marvel reading Jane Austen and books of that time, (yes I know she is not the author) how women were so oppressed and burdened with society's unfair protocol. Being unable to put property in their name and claim their rightful inheritance. At what point did that change in England? How would you have fared? It seems so demeaning to have to depend on a man to rescue you. Not that that isn't appealing, but being necessary makes it sour to me.

Hi, I'm happy about our choice for our first book, but I do have one correction. Charlotte Collins, A Continuation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, was written by Jennifer Becton. But I do think she follows Jane's style of writing admirably. I'm looking forward to the discussion questions. Playing it by ear is a good way to start. Thanks for starting this club.

Hi everyone!

I will send out an e-mail as well but our first book of the month (form a couple of members suggestions is Charlotte Collins: A Continuation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice by Jennifer Becton

It is a continuation of Pride and Prejudice and can be found through the following link:

One of our members recommended getting together every 5 chapters... since this is a new club we will play this by ear. Please use this team discussion for questions, discussion and posting where you are in the book.

Happy reading!
