I have two grown daughters, one lives nearby and the other several states away. The far away daughter is coming to visit this week! And bringing her boyfriend. Will be nice to see her. She has been away a long time. Last visit was fall to visit her one week old nephew. :)
Christmas visit was via Skype.

Who else here uses Skype to visit with offspring?

I'm a new 'Empty Nester'. My baby girl graduated college last week and moved 1,600 miles away. I have an adult 'kid' at home - I don't think he will ever leave - so the basement of the nest isn't empty.

I'm still here. I gave up on this team for a while because no one was posting. I agree that bad habits are hard to get rid of. I battle daily. I got mad at my husband today so I went on a long drive, when I returned I bought a box of white buttered popcorn and ate the whole thing.

Hi,

Bad habits have returned. I need to get back on track.

Who is still here in the Empty Nest (which is pretty empty, haha)?

Do we have a leader for this team? I don't see any action going on. It's to bad this team isn't active. I am sure there are a lot of empty nest folks out there.

Hello Empty Nesters! I just got back from a trip to New Orleans. Had to try the beignets. Yum! But, now back to plan and losing weight. I am on track to lose 54 pounds. The first 24 went off pretty easily but now I'm slowing down and getting bored. What are you doing to fight diet boredom. Also, I'm having cravings for my old bad habits.

Hi Tish,
I am glad to see you back. I am shocked to see it has been over 3 months since I checked in.
Did you see we have a new team leader?
MaryM signed on as co-leader a day or two ago. I am happy that she is willing to give it a try.
So, your birthday is New Years Eve? My son's birthday is New Years day (today)
Happy happy day.
Happy year to all!

Whew, it's been awhile! Hi Rain! Glad to see you here and Suz too. Just had a birthday (New Year's Eve) so I'm starting up again. The pounds have creeped on and it's time to do something about it.

I still just have a 4-legged grandchild. It's been a busy year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone. "Let's talk" again. This is the place to check in and say "Hi" and anything else on your mind.

Hope to see y'all soon,

Tish

Six weeks since I last logged in, I am back for the same reason: avoid the inactive tag.
If any of you more active members have ideas about what you would like from this team feel free to share those ideas. If you feel you would like to LEAD the team please contact me. I will not feel shoved out at all - since I am rarely here anyway.
While I am here I will just slip in a bit of news I recently received: My son and his wife will be having a baby in February. Grandma time. Cool!
I am very excited about it but at the same time a little sad. They live a thousand miles away. I will see the little one grow up in pictures and once a year visits ={
So, that's my news. Anyone else have anything?

Hi everybody, I just wanted to pop in so our team doesn't get the dreaded "Inactive Leader" tag. I only took on this role because we got one of those after Suz (our founder) stopped signing in.
Ironically I have been inactive online because I have been more active in reality.
I know it really does help to track things.
I hope you all are having a great summer.
Let us know what you are up to - maybe we can get a conversation going here?

New member to this team. So glad I found some like minded Empty Nesters. Our "Nest" still has some action (2 sons ages 26 and 28 still live at home but are gone most of the time). Our 30 year son and wife who is 31 lives 5 miles-they are expecting a little girl in August (first grand child!!!). Our baby-son age 22 lives 30 miles from us-going to school. He may move across our state if the job he has interviewed comes through. My husband of 31 and 1/2 years works many hours as a quality control engineer at GE.

Raising our sons included 18 years of home education then for 3 years we cared for my husbands wheel chair bound mother until she died last July. So now for the first time I am having HOURS to myself and I feel lost. I am not sure about employment but what experience do I have? Plus when our grand child is born..I will be watching her for at least a few days a week. I volunteer at church helping with the productions we do for holidays and it has kept me BUSY...a good busy but I am still working through issues in me with having major surgeries in the last few years (total hysterectomy-umbilical hernia repair-2 colon resections in 2008-I was VERY SICK)...so I think my body is out of whack a bit...I am going to get tested to see where my hormone levels are. I have no clue. At age 53 I still feel very young...all of this I need to get rid of this extra weight so here I be on Sparkpeople..

So that is about me....looking forward to getting plugged in here!

She is doing better now after many mishaps that should never have happened.... you just gotta be there in the hospital for every step to see that care is appropriate. The health industry is soooooooo messed up!

Hope your grandson is okay. That is so scary when they are so young.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I hope everything went well with her surgery.

My little grandson (6 months) has to have a CAT Scan because his head is too big in proportion to his body. I'm freaking out, too. My daughter and her family are 2000 miles away in Indianapolis. I'll probably fly out there if they find that anything is wrong.

I am a New Yorker, and when I was a young girl, early 20's, I went to a dinner event and ate at the same small table with Paul Newman and his wife. They were lovely, and he is even more handsome in person.
When good looking actors get older it doesn't bother me much either. That George Clooney,
he just keeps getting more and more handsome. Yummy!! (AND no calories, LOL)

yeah
I was not tempted by that movie.
Even though they kept saying " It is not really a sports movie"
"It is more about business and statistics"
Yeah, that sounds more interesting.
???
The getting older thing doesn't bother me. I thought Paul Newman was sexy to the end. But then he was my father's age when I first noticed him.

I did not have plans for V-day - but on the 14th we decided to go back to our place in New Mexico for a few days. Just got up in the morning, decided, and went. . emoticon That is one of the upsides of this empty nest thing.
We stopped off on the way back to take our college age son out to lunch.
We are back in the city now

Went to see the Tom Hanks/Sandra Bullock movie yesterday, Extremely Loud and Close (whatever it's called) about 9/11. It was really good and tastefully done. Bring Kleenex if you go. It was a very good movie.

Are you logging your cardio points? And regular points?

I get easy points by spinning the wheel, commenting on others' blogs, and tracking food. I also track my personal goals, like eating all meals at home (I go out a lot), how many hours sleep I get, and many things, even saving money!

Brave you.... Annie! Glad you are still below where you started. That happened to me too and I was glad.

Don't forget to check on your stats within the team. It is under the huddle box, you can check points and exercise points. One of the things I like about this team being small.... you can FIND yourself, wherever you are!

Keep walking with your pedometer. I have mine with me every day and it helps me to get extra steps in for little things like parking farther away at the supermarket, bank, etc. It DOES add up!

Haha, Grace, the dog is brooding..... Ours misses my brother who was here over Christmas from Oregon. He took the dog on long walks and the dog loved that!

Annie I survived December but then was outta control the beginning of January. I'm doing better now and feeling more in control (it was mostly leftover goodies, chocolates, etc.). Had a good weight loss this week with some fudges, but still came out ahead. Just trying to add more steps and maybe even some actual exercise! With my busy schedule, that is difficult.

Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all and hope to see you on the Progressive Walk.

I'm back! Kind of blanked out over the holidays. This was our second "empty nest" year (with all of the kids scattered across the country except the 18 year old) but it is still kind of rough. Last year, we took a trip over the holidays so I could avoid it all. This year I decided to just turn them on their heads and create all new holiday traditions. (New tree decorations, new activities, etc.) It worked out well and we had a nice -- and pretty relaxing -- Christmas. It was for the best because work was crazy during the month of December.

But the holidays are over and its time to get back to the real world! Hello, 2012! I am going to really try to remember to wear my pedometer so I can contribute to the progressive walk, Tishtoes. I need to catch up on the message boards and see how everyone else did during the final months of 2011. Hope there are lots of successes to motivate me!

Got back from taking our younger daughter to college. How can my husband and I feel so happy, sad, proud and empty all at the same time! Our dog is brooding outside her bedroom door as I write.

We had a nice day at Disneyland/California parks yesterday with the daughters, son-in-law and husband. Put in over 22K steps for the day, whew! We need a new destination so I can add in all my miles. I think we are very close to Cheyenne on our Progressive Walk.

Been eating too much so trying to get back on track today. (Still a few great cookies left in the house though.)

Your visit with your daughter sounds really nice Tish. emoticon emoticon emoticon
I got over my "job" My friends house is all painted and finished. Her goal was to get it done in time for a house full of company at Christmas. We made it. It looks great!
For my help she gave me a couple of nice gift cards. One for a sporting goods store where I plan to buy some new hiking/work boots and one for a nice restaurant - which I will enjoy using when my "kids" come to visit this weekend.
My older son and his wife came for Christmas. My younger son (who goes to college near by) came over too. It was a nice holiday. My daughter and her husband couldn't make for Christmas so they are coming this weekend. My sons are coming back too. My son's wife couldn't make it this time, so we wont quite have every one, but close.
We are staying, temporarily, in a two bedroom apartment. It is going to be a little crowded. But square footage wise it is probably no smaller than our house out on the ranch and at least here there are places to go, if we want to get out.
So - that's all up with me.
How are you all doing?

(decided I should post this here too)

My daughter is home from college for Christmas and it's been nice. She was surprised to see me still up (at the computer) last night at 3 am when she came in after seeing a friend's rock band in L.A. We talked and played with the dog awhile. It was great. She is 22 and in grad school at UT Austin. When she said (at dinner) that she was going out to see a rock band my son-in-law told her to text him when she got there. So glad he did that. I can't ask it but he can--and does!

Since everyone is taking a Christmas break, I feel a little invasive- but I would really like to join your group and I do "walk" at the community center here in Sturgis several times a week.

I subscribed to this feed but I really don't know what that means. I am hoping it means I can get to your conversations without a lot of button pushing.

It sounds like we are all in about the same place in our lives and with our weight goals. I hope you all had a great vacation break with your families and I look forward to hearing from you in the new year (I was going to say semester- how schoolish of me). emoticon

Yay, good for you for getting some counseling. Let us know how it goes.

Was sad to take my daughter to the airport yesterday to head back to school. She will be home longer for Christmas break, so really looking forward to that.

Have a good week everybody!

Rain, we need you on the Progressive Walk.

It was a pretty good holiday. I certainly enjoyed the time off and having my oldest daughter back home. Sounds like she'll be home next semester too because she is going to transfer schools. That certainly makes her sister happy. I indulged and ate whatever I wanted. For me, that keeps me more sane than trying to count calories or deny myself anything. Turns out that actually allowed me to enjoy the food, take only what I wanted, and stop when I was full. I have much more control that I ever had in the past.

Too bad I didn't have more control over my guests! My mother caused a few issues. Then my DH and I got into it today. Long story short, we're finally going to get some couples counseling after 20 years! Tomorrow it's back to work, back to class, and on the phone making appointments.

That's a great idea Rain! I'll check out that book for her. I didn't think the tofurkey looked like a yummy thing either. Thanks for the tip.

My son is vegetarian. For a while it was both sons but now just the older one.
One dish they like for Christmas dinner (the non vegetarian members of the family like it too) is Chicken Fried Tofu with veggie gravy. I got the recipes from "The Passionate Vegetarian" by Crescent Dragonwagon. That is a silly pen name but I think it is because she also writes children's books. I got several good recipes from there along with lots of good information on vegetarian cooking and ingredients. I recommend it for a gift for your daughter or for yourself.
I would send you the recipes but I am temporarily away from home and did not bring my cookbooks with me.
I have heard tofurky is not good. At least not good enough to justify its cost.
My son does not really care if there is not a vegetarian entrée as long as there are a few side dishes without meat.

It rained hard today and I had a concert. We had a pretty good turnout though, even with this weather.

Tomorrow I am trying to catch up on things and get a bedroom ready for my daughter coming in from grad school. It is a junk pile of boxes at the moment. Need to get the sheets washed and bed made and heater turned on for the guestroom waterbed. It takes a couple days to regulate.

My husband went shopping tonight for turkey and some other things for our dinner this week. He is the cook--not me. emoticon

Time for bed. Hopefully I will post to our Progressive Walk tomorrow when I take a coffee break. Sweet dreams!

zzzzzzzz

We're having dinner on Friday too. My oldest has been vegetarian for almost a year now and I'm all worried about having enough for her to eat. Has anyone ever made a tofurkey before? She does want hummus so I've got that on the list. A couple of weeks ago we had a dinner for the other side of the family and I made vegetarian gravy. It turned out pretty great...with all the spices it was almost better than the turkey gravy. Almost.

Welcome back. I know all about putting myself last. Not enough hours in a day!

Glad to hear from you all. Yes, Rain, I'm good for your 2 miles average. We need it.

Had a nice rehearsal and dinner with friends. Tomorrow is a concert for me. It's been a busy weekend! Got the windows measured for shutters yesterday and they will be installed Dec 9, after Thanksgiving. Really looking forward to my daughter coming home from college (grad school in Austin). We will have a full house for dinner Friday.
