My Puppy not my DIL Dog (Lily), but Sophie we just got her 1.5 months ago I looked the dog names up on the internet and had several picked out, but Sophie is so adorable she needed a name to fit the looks. As you can tell I'm a proud Momma. Please see Spark Page and Pictures of Sophie.

Susie's full name is Susie Q, she just looked like a cute little Susie Q.

Jake: I'm sorry to admit, but he looked so "jakey" & ragged and we couldn't come up with a name so we named him Jake. I like that name anyway. His real name is Jasper & I didn't like it.

Bruno's name was his when we adopted him and we all thought it fitted so we left it.

Ladybird was named because she was white with black spots

Maggs was Maggie with her previous owner, I wanted a new name that was similar to her old so Maggs was it, she also gets Magget sometimes

Pussass was just plain Puss at the start, it got extended to Pussa but it was my Mum that added the "ass" on the name and it stuck.

good question--great responses.
my gang -- #1. shea, the border collie. his name was shep when we got him. didn't like that. couldn't come up with anything, then one day while listening to the ball game being played at shea stadium, the lightbulb came on and with the change of one letter, shep became shea. #2 tippy the 1/2 border collie was named because my dh's father had had a dog named tippy when he was young and dh asked if he could name the puppy, and he chose tippy. she is also known as tipperella, the tipster, tippytoes or tipitos if you're feeling mexican emoticon when she was a pup, it was to pee or not to pee, that is the question.....#3 buddy. he came with the name and since he was at least 8 yrs old, he got to keep it. the cat, i'm not sure why we named him finnegan, but, it suits him. and the horses are bill and rocky. they came with their names too and i didn't come up with anything better. aka -- rocky and billwinkle. emoticon

Moses was Baldwin, but when I heard his story I renamed him.His mama had the puppies at a
church where she hid them under a log and covered them with mud to keep them safe. The
day I adopted him they were going to show the Sunday school children the puppies and tell
them how the mama & puppies were all finding homes. I think it's great they got the children
involved & interested in the process.

When we went to pick Mutt up at the pound, he was named Boy. They were having quite a discussion about what kind of dog Boy was. Beka, then 6, looked at them and said "that is just grandma's Super Mutt." Super Mutt it was, Mutt for short.

DH wanted to name Freyja after the Egyptian Goddess of cats. I didn't like the sound of that Goddess's name. I found the Norwegian Goddess of love, Beauty and War. She had a flying chariot pulled by 2 flying white cats. Then when we found out that the British changed Freyja to Freya and Freyja's day to Friday. Freyja it was.

My daughter had named CoffeeKitty "Foffee Bean" since her coloration is like a Coffee Bean. I couldn't force myself to use baby language so I started calling her kitty at first, and then CoffeeKitty. Cloud loves to get up high, so obviously she is a cloud with lots of white and gray. Shadow is a tuxedo kitty and is easy to miss if the day is getting dark. Stratus also like to get up high and is colored very similarly to Cloud, except that where she is plain gray, he is striped gray, so he is named after a type of cloud that is streaked.

Cielito at first appeared to be grayish and Cielito means little sky or little heaven. Patience is a Biblical virtue and now I have Patience emoticon . Caspian was named by my son after Prince Caspian in the Chronicles of Narnia written by C. S. Lewis. (When my kids were young I read that series of books to them.)

Maintaining.

PolyDactyl had been named by a young volunteer at the shelter and it so fit her with all those toes (he was excited when I said I would keep the name). Daisy had her name for 13 years and I couldn't she changing it when I adopted her.

The cute thing is when my son and daughter were very young, they each tried to write me a letter as to why they should have their own kitties and how they would care for them and already picked out their names - Gizmo and Midnight (from the movie Gremlins). I had two older cats and they wanted their own. We adopted 2 kittens and the male was my son's choice and became Gizmo. The female was my daughter's who she indeed named Midnight even though she was a gorgeous calico. After many years, the vet finally asked me why my little tuxedo cat was named Benji and this beautiful calico was named Midnight. He had a good chuckle when I told him about the kids letters.

Thanks for sharing your stories. They're fun to read!

Maggie and Millie were named after my favorite English teacher in high school and my favorite English professor in college! We hadn't considered names for the puppies when we first got them, so those just popped in my head and sounded good together.
Had we registered them AKC (they're purebed) they would officially be
Heavens to Maggie-troid
Magnificent Moonlight Millicent

Bubbie was Zerbert at the shelter, which was just the name the original rescue gave him when they picked him up as a stray. We tried calling him Zerbie when we got him home, or Bertie, but neither one worked. I kept calling him 'little bruddah' to the girls, which eventually evolved into Bubbie or Bubba.

Ben's original name is Bentley. While that carries on the -y/-ie end of the kids' names, we just started calling him Ben for short. Sometimes he's BenBen, or Old Man, but Ben just fits him best.

Pudgy got his name from us. When we first saw pictures of him we both remarked how chubby he was, all that round puppy fat was too cute! I suggested Pudgy and Bill appended Porkchop to that, and that's what my sister called him ever-after. That's actually how he's listed at the vet's office - Pudgy Porkchop Bailey.

Louie came with his name and he looked like a Louie ;)

Lily's name was Stella. It just didn't fit her at all, plus I kept picturing Marlon Brando screaming “STEEELLA”! My friends said it should start with an "L" so it would go with "Louie." I tried every name I could think of and nothing worked. One night I woke up and remembered 4 years earlier when I was helping a friend who had acquired a little kitten and then couldn't keep her. I took her and named her Lily. Smokey was really unhappy about that and the friend was able to take her back by then, and moved out of the area. I always said how I loved the name Lily and if I ever got another female cat that would be her name, but I'd forgotten about it. I looked at her and said are you Lily? Of course she answered me and that was that! Problem is, my vet's computer wouldn't allow me to have another pet named Lily so she became Lily1. I have to remember when I take her in that they know which Lily we're treating. To me, this is the REAL Lily ;) and she knows it!

My Sushi, who lived to be around 23 - 25, and got to retire to FL from Brooklyn, NY (she retired, not me ;)) has a story. I was home on vacation during Christmas week many years ago in Brooklyn. I walked out of my house to go to a local Japanese restaurant to pick up some Sushi for lunch. There was snow on the ground, and I heard mewing. I looked around and saw a tiny little tuxedo cat under a car. I had just lost my Tara 6 months earlier (once again swearing never again), but had some Tender Vittles and went to get them – after all, she was asking for food! I took her upstairs and refused to name her, calling her “little girl” for over 2 weeks. Then a friend of mine gave me a table top book on the Art of Sushi Making. The little girl was sitting beside me on the sofa and I looked at the book and the word “Sushi” just jumped out at me. I looked at her and said Sushi? She answered me and put her head on my shoulder – obviously she never left her new home until it was time to move to Florida.

Tinkerbell is named after the Disney tink( not Paris Hilton's dog). When we went to get her she had little freckles on her nose like pixie dust. Pixie got her name from a dog on petfinder I wanted but didn't get. But it goes so well with Tinkerbell. Her name when we got her was Moxie, so she didn't need to really learn a new name.

Obie was named after DH's dad. The original owners were calling him Buster. But he's definitely an Obie.

the people at the Christian school where Jack was running around were calling him Sader (the school team is the Crusaders). But Jack is not a Jewish Passover meal!! We started out calling him Blackjack. Now he's just Jack.

Omar was named after Omar Little from 'The Wire'. The character is played by Michael K. Williams who has a scar down the center of his face from a knife fight (our Omar lost his right eye). And Omar Little is a bada$$. EVERYBODY is afraid of Omar Little. He walks out whistling "A Hunting We Will Go" (aka"The Farmer in the Dell") and the streets clear.
that's my boy! GRRRRRR
