I know that psychologists say that if a person of whatever age starts mistreating animals, pretty soon they will be mistreating other people!

I completely agree, some people are just sociopathic! Its wrong, they know its wrong and they have nerve to want people to feel sorry for them once they're caught. Where was the compassion for the animals? I used to live down the street from a couple of guys who started dog fighting and I threatened them with the cops and called the cops several times on them. It made me very unpopular in that neighborhood but it was effective. They were doing other illegal things I'm sure, guess they figured they didnt need the heat.

On a happier note....I got my Best Friends magazine today and there is an article about a rescued dog that ended up losing both front legs. What a cutie it is and it walks or hops on it's hind legs. Even followed it's rescuer up the stairs before she realized it. Does my heart good to see something like that.

There's no excuse for dog fighting if you ask me or any type of animal fighting, cockfighting etc. I don't care what kind of childhood a person had; that's just a cop out.

Dog fighting!!!! Can you think of a more despicable way of making money???? They should put all involved in the ring and let them fight amongst themselves. emoticon

I think a lot of people are always looking for a "why did he do it" excuse when sometimes it's just that it's the way they are. There is such a thing as an evil person and nine times out of ten they come from normal loving homes.

Right Nellie - that's what I'm sayin'. Some perpetuate the abuse & some don't, but often there is a danger of it. I don't know if we'll get to hear what this guy's SUPPOSED excuse was.

I finally got the story on "Nathan" - a dog that died from the Ft Worth shelter along the same time that Justice did. (Thus they named the 1st rescue from the Justice Fund..."Natalie Justice" after both dogs) Nathan was a bait dog somebody was using in dog fights. Another sore spot with me. He only lived one day after he got rescued, but they said he got as much loving as they could give him & he didn't die alone.

My heart is so into dog rescues but I have no funds & am SUPPOSED to be looking for a job - which can be very time consuming - ha - working, that is.

Technically finished my externship today, but want to do some more volunteering for more experience.

Off to the pharmacy now to get LD's gabapentin - I better hurry up - traffic is a bugger today.

Well, those who have been abused do tend to become abusers -- usually first to animals and then to people. Yet some people who have been abused, break out of that.

No - I know - & it may not even have been the case with this guy either. Some abused children grow up to leave normal lives, & some don't. I'm waiting to see if anybody says anything about the guy's background - out of curiosity I guess. Everybody says, "What kind of person....." So I'm wondering that exact thing I think.

They may have, but I still don't understand why that would equate to inflicting the same on a defenceless animal.

I'm still in favour of the whip or cane. Before they see any time in jail, they should have a couple of whacks with the cane, then they might know what it feels like to receive pain from someone else.

Jenn, the sad thing is, even states that put the death penalty back on the table have not stopped the criminals from doing their nasty deeds. Not sure what it would take. I do understand what you're saying - sometimes the upbringing can have a terrible effect on a person - only wish common sense and kindness would kick in. Wonder who that poor little puppy did belong to???

Well the DA claims he's going to go for the max - 10 years, which is actually a pretty dad-gum long time if you're the one sitting on the other side of the bars. Think about all the living we do in 10 years. I hope he does get some kind of "help" before he gets out though, or society won't be any safer. But being a felony & him being 18, it won't be falling off either.

Aside from me wanting him to be punished FOR SURE, I just have so many wonderings now. Like WHOSE DOG was it in the first place? And as far as this man - does he have a family? Did he ever have anybody to care about him either? What was done to him in his past perhaps? What kind of abuse? NO it doesn't excuse ANYthing - I'm just wondering out loud is all. (or on post - whatever)

What I wish, besides removing the offenders from society so they cannot repeat the abuse, is that if the penalties were stiff enough, maybe, just MAYBE it would cause someone along the way to stop & think & NOT commit the act in the first place. Wouldn't make any difference to many, but any abuse not committed in the first place is good.

I receive information from the Animal Legal Defense Fund and some of the states are now imposing stiffer rules for animal cruelty. The problem is, it's done on a state to state basis. I wish the could make it country wide.

Oh I definitely agree! To me, it helped explain the PART OF the "how", as in "How could somebody do something like that."

The man talked at the funeral about how Justice was the helpless victom that happened to be there. The man probably didn't hate dogs - but rather would/ could have preyed on anything small & helpless - perhaps someday a CHILD. So he was saying, even those that didn't have animals, but did have children, he said, "This is about you too...."

At any rate, they said the DA plans to pursue the maximum penalty of 10 years for this felony.

Drug affected or not, I still think they should be held accountable. Did someone strap him down and give him the drugs???? No, he did it himself and is responsible for what he has done while on them.

Sorry that sounds hard, but I'm really sick of people and their excuses.

I glad he turned himself in too, but unfortunately, if he was on drugs, they'll probably just fine him & send him to rehab & community service, or that's the way it seems to always go!

I didn't go to the vigil personally - I stayed home with Little Dog & Snickers who would have been home alone. But someone posted the following on the facebook page about the vigil last night:

"At the Candlelight vigil tonight for Justice..the District Attorney announced that one Darius Ewing has turned himself into police for the demonic torture and burning of Sweet Justice!!! Thank you everyone for sharing and NEVER FORGET what was done to this defenseless and inocent puppy!! Thank you to the SPCA and the corporations and individuals who contributed to the $25,000 reward for this little thugs arrest. The DA announced also he will be seeking the maximum penalty (10 years) for this felony!! Be at rest little Justice, be at rest!"

Actually - on the facebook page for Dallas Police Dept, it says he "surrendered to police" (while the candlelight vigil was going on), so to me that says he could have either turned himself in, OR - he just didn't put up a fight when they found him. Whatever. If he did turn himself in, I can't help but think there could be some good in him someplace & maybe he feels remorseful. But yes, I hope he is punished appropriately!!!

I saw another news bit about it the other night. Someone who knew the young man said he "had a drug problem" and that he had been in rehab but had run away from there, and that he felt he would not have done it if he had not been under the influence at the time. I'm thinking, "DUH!! You THINK!!???" Sounded to me from the beginning like somebody on mind bending drugs. So I'm definately NOT taking up for the man, but wondering if he had any remorse when he "came down."

I watched the video of George Zimmerman yesterday on the stand, & the aggravating questions they were drilling him with, & the terror & misery he was trying to mask behind his exterior. Or maybe that's just what I'm thinking he's feeling, you know? I understand it is a very serious situation, not to be taken lightly, but the boy's mother has been saying, last I heard, that she feels "it was an ACCIDENT." Yet they are charging him with 2nd degree murder & treating him in almost every aspect like a cold blooded killer. I guess the fact that they're letting him out on bond says differently, but gee, if they decide to throw the book at him he gets life in prison. But the attorneys kept asking him these STUPID questions like "Which officer did you say it to?" etc & blah blah. Like with all that hub-bub he's going to remember that. Ok - I know "I" would be terrified. I just don't feel like the man deserves the extent of what they're doing. If it wasn't for public pressure, he might have been charged with a lesser crime. (which I could see - manslaughter or something)

Sadly Kay the system is woefully inadequate when it comes to prosecuting and penalising mongrels who abuse animals.

They should be doubly penalised as animals, like children, have no idea of the reason for the abuse.

I just wish I had a hand in the penalty phase!!!

Re the puppy story I posted this week: They now have a name - Darius Ewing - 18 yo male - (part of a group) and they have UPPED the Reward to $25,000 to bring him in!!!

People have organized a vigil/memorial for the puppy, who they named "Justice", tomorrow night at Dallas City Hall. I'd like to go, but not sure due to transportation issues & where it is, not wanting to go alone. They are also going to have a funeral at "Tooth Acres", a local pet cemetery on Saturday.

What was leftover from the funds donated for Justice's vet bills, they started a rescue fund for abused animals, & the first animal rescued they named "Natalie Justice".

Most info I'm finding is on Facebook, so I don't know how to link it up here.

I must admit we don't see as many snakes here as we probably should. Because we live on the creek, tiger snakes are very prevalent. All we can do is keep the grass down and clean up so there are no spots for them to hide in.

This was just a little garden snake and Poly seems to be intrigued with them. We've also seen one that will go into the stream in the back yard - not sure about that one.

Saw two snakes on our walk yesterday, both were harmless garter snakes. We don't have many if any poisonous snakes around here. But, my dh, grew up where nearly every snake was poisonous, so he really dislikes & has a healthy fear of them.

Happy to see everyone's dogs are recovering!

Great news with everyones pups doing better.

Definitely get some sleep Jenn, nothing worse than a couple of days of no sleep, it throws your entire body off, big time.

I'd be worried if I caught Pussass going after snakes here, no such thing as a non poisonous one here. The vet told me ages ago though that cats metabolise snake venom differently than dogs and you have some extra time to get them to the vets for antivenene. Not that I want that to happen anyway.

Glad to hear that both Lucy Bella and LD are doing better.

Jenn, hope you get some sleep tonight.

Spent the afternoon working in the yard again today and took the kitties out with me. PolyDactyl was trying to catch a snake but it went down a hole. She sat there for the longest time waiting.

Hope everyone had a great day.

Oh thank goodness Lucy Bella is getting better. Those sound like good signs. I hope she continues to improve quickly.

Little Dog seems good today too. She was at the door waiting for me at the end of my long day. Was less than thrilled at going for a Sub-Q, but forgot & forgave all when served dinner - ha. Had a VERY good appetite. I skimped her a little yesterday, trying to be easy on her insides, but she was after Snickers food after she ate her own. Snickers didn't want all hers, so I had to put it up on the counter so she didn't have to stand & GUARD it - ha. Poor thing - can't leave food around with LD.

I didn't sleep well, so I'm going to eat & hopefully turn in early.

laters all - Jenn

So glad little Lucy Bella is on the mend, too bad she had to pick up that bug!!

As for the puppy story, it makes me sick & boiling mad!!! People who do stuff like that to helpless animals are warped & mentally ill!!! emoticon I hope they catch them & bring them to justice!!! emoticon

Lucy Bella slept all day, since getting home from the vets. She turned her nose up at the freshly boiled chicken. So 6 hours later, she woke up, went for a pee, had a bit more water, had a bath and ate about 3 tbsp of chicken and a little rice She's hinting for more food right now but she'll have to wait for an hour before getting more food. She must be feeling better, she just jumped up in DH's chair. So looks like she is better.

Oh my - poor little Lucy Bella. She probably could use some rest right now. They gave LD a shot yesterday too - which was actually for vomiting & nausea, (which she did not have-she had diarrhea) but they said it also helped with cramping. Might be the same med. At any rate, she didn't go out any more when we came home, but got some rest.

I sure hope little LB is able to nibble some food soon & feel better!!!!

We are back from the vet. He said that she has no fever and her belly is soft. He gave her a shot to stop vomiting and diarrhoea, which hurt. Tomorrow she has to go back for another shot. In Kuwait they cannot bring the pills in so the shot is the only choice. She is also to only eat boiled chicken and rice for 8 days. When we got home Lucy Bella had some water and did not throw up this time. She just crawled into her kennel and went to sleep .So hopefully it's just a little bug and it will pass.

Some people seem to be beyond understanding.

Lucy Bella is not well. Last night the had diarrhoea, the threw up all the food she ate last night. This morning she is throwing up even water. I'm just waiting of the vet's office. Not sure what could be wrong. Her system must be totally empty of any food. She didn't even want to go outside this morning even when I went out the door to the patio. She always wants to go out onto the patio so she can go see the 2 dogs next door.

I still don't know where to post - ha. Here or on the other thread.

Spent my whole day off on Little Dog again. She came down with diarrhea this weekend, so it was off to the big vet. They did xrays even & new bloodwork. Nothing outstanding, so we're treating the diarrhea. She's already stopped going out several times an hour - thank goodness - poor baby. The xray did show that arthritis is starting to advance in her spine.

My sister just told me that the puppy down here died. I don't want to be depressing, but the SPCA here is offering a $5000 reward for leads on who burned this 4 month old puppy. Made the news for days. They tried to treat it, but infection set in & it was over. And get this - there was a CROWD watching - & nobody will step forward. Someone said they tried to hang it first. Also that some woman had tried to put out the flames & people were laughing. I could just pass out from nausea. When the police arrived the crowd dispersed.

I know that sort of thing probably happens more than we hear about, but it makes me crazy.

Both my dogs are up there too, Susie's 13, & Jake's not certain, but vet thinks he's around same age as Susie. I can tell Susie's slowing down, sleeps a lot more, but still has bursts of energy now & then! She's in pretty good health overall. Jake's tough as nails, & I'd say healthy as a horse for one who's been treated so badly, (he's our rescue), but he sure likes to eat. I think he's trying to make up for all those lean years. If I don't feed him what he thinks is enough, he'll go out & catch something, no kidding!

So far the only one of my pets who really shows her age is CoffeeKitty who is about 15 going on 16. She has hyperthyroidism and I put medication in her ears twice daily. She seems very tired much of the time lately.

I swear Maggs just doesn't seem to realise that she is getting on, she'll look a little tired sometimes when she is in her bed but when she is trotting about outside she thinks she's a pup again.

Bruno and Ladybird were relatively young when we got them 3 and 4 respectively and they are still pretty young still 5 years on.

Jules, you're probably right. The price wasn't bad for such a wonderful time and fantastic food. It was $25 a person. Our favorite tea was Earl Grey with peach and raspberry. I would love to do it again.

Nellie, hope the pup is doing good. I'm sure your friend appreciates your support.

After having a dog go through major surgery, I'm sure your friend is glad her dog has come through it. I hope it keeps improving. There are great things available for pain relief in animals. Maggs had a Fentanyl transdermal patch attached after her surgery and I think, if it was warranted, they would have supplied me with another. As it was I could either give her a 1/4 of a 50g Tramal capsule or the Metacam liquid. Her bloods said her kidneys were functioning normally so 4 drops of Metacam daily worked out great for pain and for anti inflamation purposes.

That sounds like a Degustation menu Mary Anne. A lot of restaurants have those ranging from costing a fortune to being reasonable.

Sounds neat, Mary Anne! Heard of such places, but none close enough around here to try! There's a place that's similar but it's still had menus.

Today was beautiful, but weekend sounds like a bust. Supposed to rain both days & into the first of the week. Glad I got my yard work done too!

OMG!!! Some of my friends wanted to go to lunch at a tea room that they'd heard a lot about. You pay a flat amount and select two teas that you would like to try. The food is all homemade. There is no menu - the food just starts coming. Very dainty, tasty and some very fattening but all in very small servings. Had everything from a bite size cucumber sandwich to a bite of unbelievable cheesecake. We sat, drank tea and chatted for a good 3 hours. This was in a very old victorian house with beautiful china cups and saucers every where...also had things you could by. The menu changes so you never know what you will get. They only serve a max of 35 people and you have to make reservations. When I finally got home I took the kitties out and worked in the yard to work off what I ate.

Mom goes back to the dr this morning for a follow up on her bp. Checked it at home and it was good. Suppossed to be nice today so want to get out in the yard. Have a shed to tear down and flower beds to weed.

I've never been on an Easter egg hunt, not even when I was a child. I have to admit I really don't remember anyone around at that time that did.

My soup was lovely and today it was home prepared food all day ........ healthy and great!!!

I had to clean up inside, the dust bunnies were taking over so I sucked up those little suckers, cleaned the loo, did a few clothes washes and made a great Mushroom Ragu with Polenta for dinner.

Might get out into the garden tomorrow hopefully.

Peace and long life - Jules

Kay, I use to count the eggs but then it was to remember where the others were!!!

Jules, hope you got to have your soup. Try to get a little rest tomorrow. You need a break.

Spent most of the day out in the yard. Did some pruning and trimming and my hair was full of twigs. It is so dry here and looks like no rain in sight. Some of my hostas that are under the cheery trees are having a hard time breaking through the ground. I also worry about the well when the water levels are down so low.

Hope everyone else is doing okay. Have a great night.

No, Mary Anne, they were plastic eggs with candy inside. My pug would sniff them out & try to gnaw them open. Sometimes he'd succeed & eat candy, wrappers & all, if it was wrapped, a lot of times it wasn't. Yeah, when my BIL would hide them sometimes we'd find them in July stuck here or there, if the dogs didn't find them first. Then we got smart & started counting them so we'd know if we found them all!

Sorry your stomach is acting up, Jules, that's no fun! Eating out can do that!

Weather here has turned warm again (no complaints here) but will probably cool down after the weekend.

Nowhere to go tomorrow emoticon mind you I have a ton of things to do around the house, but thankfully no place to go. Sitting around at hospitals and driving back and forth to doctors etc is so tiring and there is nothing worthwhile to eat on the road. I'm so sick of crap, even the so called healthy crap is acting up on my digestion. Will be glad to have some homemade tomato soup tonight for dinner and tomorrow I can get something ready for dinner.

Kay, were those hard boiled eggs???? Must have been really bad by the summer. Too funny. I use to like to do the plastic eggs and put candy or little surprises in them. Still do some sort of "baskets" for the "kids".

Kitties are napping and I've got to get some paperwork done. The clouds are moving in and I hope we do finally get some rain but then I won't be able to take the girls out.

I had a pug who was the best Easter egg finder ever! He loved candy & could sniff it out a mile away! He'd find the ones the kids couldn't. lol My late BIL could really hide them, we'd still be finding them in July when we mowed or were out in the yard or flower beds.

My neighbors across the street had a lot of family come over for Easter. They had an Easter egg hunt in their yard. Their black Labrador Retriever was on a long leash and wanted to participate, but didn't get to. I saw the little girls in their fluffy little Easter dresses. That sure brought back memories!

I know we got the biggest kick out of watching my great nephew hunt for Easter eggs last week. It look liked one of those golf tournaments where the crowd follows the player around the course!! We need more kids in our family!

Deb, sounds like you had a really fun Easter. We were with my son in law's family and there were 2 little ones....Jeffery age 5 and Meredith age 2. We had to much fun with the kids. They are priceless.

I hope everyone had a good Easter yesterday. Mom and I had my sister, her son and fiance and her two boys (9 and 6) over here for dinner. The boys brought their eggs along to show mom and I how the colored them. Well, while they were down in the basement playing Wii that danged ole Easter Bunny came and hid them outside. So out we all went, with the 3 dogs, to find their eggs. Mocha was having a ball helping Andrew (9) find his eggs, I think she found more of them than he did. She would run up to them and touch them with her nose and look to see if Andrew was watching her.

After the eggs were all found we took the boys and dogs and went for a walk to the playground. Kyle (6) likes walking my mom's Rat Terrier, Taco, because he is 12 yrs and he is small. They all had a good time at the playground and Mocha got in a good run with my nephew. All in all it was a great day.

We had everyone back over tonight to finish up leftovers.

Took Mocha for her walk tonight and she made a new friend. There is a young man who's house is near the end of my walk. He had a German Shephard dog named Jerry Lee. He had to put Jerry Lee down a week ago, epilepsy got really bad. He knew he wanted another dog so he checked out some breeders and he now has a female German Shephard who is 4 months old. He has had her for 3 days now and her name is Bella. Bella and Mocha hit it off right away. So now Mocha has a new buddy to watch for on our walks.

They say kids are your reward (or penalty) for having sex!!!

It's even worse when they have two chicks they get blocked from either side.

Since my girls are really indoor kitties and only go out with me, I don't have to worry about them getting the birds. I do have to worry about the foxes and the hawks!

The parrots sound like the bluejays. You can't help but laugh when they keep going after the parents to be fed.

We used to always have the swallows build nests in our old garage but since the new one was built after the bushfires, there are no places for them to get in unless the door is open.

I'm always wary of putting feeders around the yard, for one Pussass is still pretty athletic (even though he's @13) and he loves ambushing little animals!!!. The other is the cockatoos, they may not have a nose, but those beaks can sniff out food a mile away and when they've finished with the food they rip the crap out of the feeders and where they're attached!!!

I love them but they are incredibly destructive. We do feed them with whatever our Cocky doesn't eat, we sprinkle it out in the next door paddock, far enough away that they don't associate it with our house. Talk about suckers for animals!!!

Mary Anne you should watch the parrots with their babies, the little ones (who are as big as Mum) rock from side to side and making this funny scratchy squawking sound, they follow Mum and Dad around no matter where they go.

Don't you just love watching the birds!!!! I have 8 feeders in my yard and enjoy watching them eventually bring their little ones to show them how to eat.

At last I can tell spring is here. The violet green swallows are making their nest under the eaves of the house (inside the little air holes to the attic). They are flying back and forth bringing materials for the nest!
