Aloha everyone.

My name is Kelly and I live in Hawaii. I'm currently in the process of getting my Open Water certificate via a PADI program. I completed my confined water skills on Friday, and on Sunday, we did our first two open water dives. The last two are going to have to be maybe two or three weeks from now, as I'm getting married on September 8th - and I refuse to do any more dives (and thus get ridiculous-looking sunburns, despite wearing sunscreen) before my wedding day. (I don't want raccoon eyes in all my wedding pictures!).

I'm probably one of the luckiest students in the world, though. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii (one of the premier places to dive in the world - and where they do the infamous Manta night dive). On top of that, my fiance is a dive instructor and manages a dive shop - so yes! I'm learning to dive for free! I'm also pretty sure I'll be able to get my scuba equipment for a cheaper price than normal retail.

So, that's a little about me. Thought I'd join here to talk scuba with other Sparksters. I tend to lurk a lot at times - but you can be sure if I have questions or something to say, I'll post.

Have a fantastic day.

Hello, here's my story:

I'm not a diver now, but I've always wanted to be.

I've been a member of sp since March, but really became active in June.

This past week I realized I don't have any ULTIMATE reward to drive me to my final goal weight of 150lb. Then I thought of scuba and think it might be something that would keep me focussed.

I can actively picture myself in some hot scuba outfit (in the Bond Girl sytle) and with that image I have a strong and healthy body to go underwater for a regulation period (if there is such a thing) without coming up for air. This reward also encompasses my love for travel since there aren't really many great diving spots (that I know of) in Maryland.

Where I hope joining this team will be helpful is to encourage me to reach those goals. I have already read some of the posts on the challenges and have already found them so.

So would it be alright to be a team member even though I don't dive yet?

To make this work for the long term

Hi everyone! Just joined and a fellow bubble diva...

I'm certified rescue Padi diver, I haven't been anywhere tropical just enjoying local diving in the Great Lakes. My favorite dive is the Niagara River, sigh....very cool!

Also love the local quarries for puddle jumping.

ONly been in the water once so far this year, been busy as all heck but working on that part

Hi all! We are going to St Thomas and St John. We are going to try snuba on St Thomas and we'll be snorkeling on St John. We are trying to decide if we should buy our own masks. I think we will, that way we'll be sure they fit. Any suggestions on equipment? Thanks!

Hello all divers! I'm excited that I found this group! I'm an avid diver, I live in So. Florida a few hours from some great warm water diving, so I get to enjoy the waters here year-round. However, I became active in 2003 while living in CA, so cold water is my first love! I love dropping down into the cold waters of CA and WA, looking for nudibranchs and all the amazing diverse creatures that cold waters have to offer!

I joined SparkPeople because of diving, actually. I have the chance to start tech training, and it's something I very much want to do. However, I had to admit to myself that I'm not in the physical shape to undertake that task right now. So I'm watching the calories, and trying to get in 4 healthy work-outs each week! I work 12 hour days in a very busy ER, and start work at 7 am, so it's not very easy to do, but so far I'm managing!

It's awesome to see so many divers on here, I love talking to divers from all over so please say hi or add me as a friend, and maybe someday we'll all get to blow bubbles together!

Hi Amanda!

Well today we are trying to pack everything up. DH is returning directly to Indonesia, leaving tomorrow at 7 am to start a 2 1/2 day trip. I'm sending some of my new things home with him. I have to try to pack my dive bag and get all my new fun stuff to fit inside it. It should be rather heavy by the time it's all packed. I'll be around in Canada for another week or so but I'm not sure about my internet access. I hope to be able to use my own laptop.

So what are you all up to this weekend?

Hi all, I'm new! I've been certified since spring of 2002- got my certification in Bonaire. Unfortunately, I had some pretty bad barotrauma from the result of a dive in the fall of 2003 in the Florida Keys.. But getting ready for my Honeymoon in St. Lucia this fall- and I just got an "A-Ok!" from the ENT doctor, so hopefully I'll be able to do well in St. Lucia.. Anyway, hello and looking forward to chatting with all of you! - Amanda

DG, I guess it is all what people are used to! And some can tolerate cooler temps more than others. I won't dive w/o my 3m even in warm temps.

I know alot of asian women are small, but I had no idea they were so self concious about size. It does take a fair amount of strengh diving. I had a struggle standing up with all the gear at first. I can just imagine how difficult it must be for these small frail women.

Being a newbie, I wasn't sure if I would be comfortable doing a night dive yet, but you & others here who have night dived really make it sound unbelievable. Something to think about.

Michelar,I think Asians perceive water temperature differently because Japanese divers put on their dry suits as soon the water hits about 22 C (about 73 F?). I noticed that American divers here dive in there bathing suits and the japanese divers use a full 3mm or even a full 5mm at 28 C. I don't think it's body fat because I've had overweight Japanese divers tell me how cold they are and skinny Americans tell me they are warm.

Cozumel is beautiful and warm! The vis is about 30m and the night dives there are fabulous! Be sure to do some night dives there. Some dive shops offer a 2 dive trip, one sunset and one night dive. I was there a week and I did 4 night dives! Lots of rays and lobsters at night and the colors of the sponges are amazing.

As far as size goes, I'm a child size in American clothes (12) but in Japan I am a woman's medium, and most women my height 4'9 or 145 cm weigh about 35-38 kg (80 lbs) so at 44 kg they think I'm fat. It's just relative. When you are from a country where everyone is underweight, you think that's normal. I met a Mexican girl in India that lives in China, she was about 5'1 and 105 lbs she told me that in China it was the same way, they think she's big . I've noticed that a lot of these tiny Japanese women float and I have to put a lot of weights on them, which means that they don't have much muscle. We also have to use 8 liter tanks with them because they can't stand up with bigger tanks. (very weak)

I am from Montreal and so is Cdn. I just got certified last summer and did my OW in Brockville, Ontario late June and needed a 7ml wetsuit, hood & gloves. It was still pretty cool for me. Cdn can tell you better what our water temp is but surely not that warm. I will be diving again in Brockville for my advanced June 30 & July 1st this summer but not sure how much diving I will actually do here yet. I basically want to dive in warm water too Cozumel is my destination this summer.

You look so tiny, what are the Asians talking about? Can't believe they would comment like that!

Where in canada are you? I've been to Vancouver, Victoria and Vancouver island. I went kayaking with the orcas but I was terrified of falling in the 40 F 10 C water! Do you dive in Canada? 10 C is even too cold for a dry suit for me!

The problem with working in a bathing suit every day, especially around skinny asians is that I get comments from every one every day that aren't so nice sometimes. I think I have more bathing suits than underwear. Good thing is that bathing suits and dive gear are a tax write-off!

Hi I just found this team!

I am a Scuba diving instructor presently living on Guam, I've been diving since I was 14 (nearly 3 decades!) and I've been an instructor since 1993. I got certified instructor in Brazil but I've been out in the Marianas (Saipan and Guam) the last 10 years. I teach mostly Japanese tourists and I love warm water and got used to the warm water here (82-86 F) so now I have to wear a full 5mm here. I need to keep fit because of my job and I practically live in a bathing suit!

Welcome Jeanie and Anne!!!!

Jeanie, I lived in West Chester for about 5 years. I really miss Ohio..never thought I'd say that, but I live in the much colder mid-west now!!! We are buying land down in Ky, about an hour outside of Lexington, so I have driven past the Cincy area a few times lately, and it makes me miss it even more.

Hello my name is Jeanie I live in Liberty Township Ohio. I have been diving for 4 years and I have gone to many islands in the Carribbean Aruba, Bonnair, Curacao, St Kitts, Barbados, Belieze, Roatan, Cozumel to name a few. I had a baby May 3, 2006 and I have not been in the water in WAY TOO LONG!! My husband and I are going to try to get back to Curacao in September. We do quarry diving here in Ohio but this is not the greatest murky and cold but hey I get wet so I will live with it. I was excited that SP has a site for divers and can not wait to look at all the other chat rooms on this team.

Hi and welcome. I see you found the swim group as well. Got sent a little poem for Alberta.

When it’s Springtime in Alberta

"When it's springtime in Alberta,
And the gentle breezes blow,
About seventy miles an hour
And it's fifty-two below,

You can tell you're in Alberta
'cause the snow's up to your butt,
And you take a breath of springtime air
And your nose holes both freeze shut.

The weather here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around,
I could never leave Alberta.
My feet are frozen to the ground."

Welcome to the team, you are the really divers, I love my bath temp waters here and don't have any desire to try to cold stuff. What do you see in the cold water that is so interesting?

Welcome to the group! I live in Edmonton, so not far. I have only done the mountian lakes, I don't really have a dive buddy anymore, and can't afford to go anywhere warm! lol

Join us on the challenges topic!

Hello everybody, if you's don't mind I'd love to join your team, and boost the cold-water, Canadian (and female!) contingent firther!

I'm originally from the UK, but moved to Calgary 3 years ago... Despite being inland, I dive more here than I ever used to in the UK - the drysuit really helps! I dive mainly in the mountain lakes, with a trip to get my warm water fix once or twice a year. Trying to improve my fitness and as a minimum lose the 30lbs or so I put on since moving to Alberta - I'm used to the cold by now, so the extra "insulation" layers are just not needed!

Live your Dreams. Except for that one about being eaten by the giant spider.

Hi Lisabeth, Weclome to the team and the wonderful world of SCUBA diving! My husband and I love to dive and live in a good place to enjoy it. We are both PADI but I think the main thing is you know how to be safe and what to do in an emergency. Diving is our stress reliever and in almost 100 dives we have not encountered a problem yet.

Hi all, I'm Lisabeth. I just finished my classroom and pool skills this past weekend. Planning dive trip in July and hoping to go Memorial Day weekend as well.

The shop I found is SSI, but my DH is PADI...he wanted me to do PADI as well, but the shop (who says they do both) says that it doesn't matter...any thoughts?

We are a 6 hour drive from San Carlos in the Sea of Cortez. May do Figi with the group in November.

Hi Susan,
I seem to be a little behind on welcoming you to the team, but WELCOME, all the same.

I see the Canadian portion of our team keeps growing! Come visit us on the Challenges topic page. That's where we do most of our talking.

Thanks, I'm go check them out. I have a couple of "freeloading" weeks after the the wedding stuff and my next job. Since I'll have my dive gear with me, I figured I might as well go diving. The question is where. Wreck diving at the new national park sounds nice but cold water, well, um, um, um is cold and I'm spoiled. So then I thought why not try diving near where I'm going to end up but I haven't dove in the Caribbean before. I've mostly done Indoneisa since I live over here.
I'm going to go check out Anthony's, thanks. Of course no phone, no TV and no radios could be a day over here :-)

We stayed at Anthony's Key Resort on the North West end of the island. The diving was incredible and the resort was very nice (no phone, no TV, no Radio in cabins). Very isolated from the rest of the world.
Just what I wanted from a vacation.
