My husband and I spent 15 days diving on Bonaire Dec 2008. Shore diving is the draw to this small desert island in the Southern Caribbean. Diving freedom, no schedules, nitrox the same price as air ($114.00 for air and weights for 6 days unlimited diving). We always stay at a new place each trip, this is our 7th trip here. We rented a large 3 bedroom house with a pool for $139 a night. It was not on the water but a 2 minute drive to the water. We dove 2 dives a day. Saw so many fish including tons of parrot fish, lizard fish, cowfish, trunkfish, goatfish, squirrelfish, Queen Angels, spotted moray eels, spotted drums, filefish, spotted eagle rays, barracuda in a school of 6, grouper in a feeding station, 4 eye butterfly, blue chromis, and on and on. Too many fish to mention them all. We took a PADI digital underwater course for a full day, including two dives with the instuctor. It was worth the time to learn the tricks of capturing the underwater sea life, both coral and fish. So much to learn about picure taking, and we are always trying to improve. The island has good grocery stores so we only ate out 2 lunches the whole trip. I now have 60 dives since becoming certified in March 2007. Our next trip back to Bonaire is February 27th, just a few weeks away. My goal is to lose enough weight to earn a new bc and wetsuit in a smaller size! If any of you are thinking of diving in Bonaire, let me know and I will give you some pointers for your trip. I have spent lots of time there and have stayed in all parts of the island.
