I agree with the below posts. I also have really bad sea sickness and I have to take Dramamine the night before and in the morning before I board the boat. I also have to be careful with my gear. I set it up all before and don't look down when putting my gear down. If I just keep my eyes on the horizon I will be okay. Whatever you do don't look straight down into the water!

I am getting motion sickness just reading these posts! I hate that! i do feel sick sometimes but lucky that I am able to let it pass. I always make sure I am drinking lots of water before & after diving.I am also careful about what I eat before diving.

I get motion sickness too. I've tried dramamine, but it doesn't work real good for me. What works for me is to take one non-drowsy dramamine and two ginger capsules just before getting on the boat. Then I also have gingersnaps in my bag to munch on while on the boat. That seems to work very well for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have always looked at the horizon-- sometimes it helps and other times it doesn't. I suppose it just depends on the intensity of my nausea. The prescription is probably zofran which is a pretty strong med for nausea. The other meds you suggested I will look into too!
I'm not sure if the ginger will help due to the fact that the nausea is from motion sickness and not from basic stomach upset... not sure though so I will try it!!

Some people get a gasp reflex after vomiting --I personally do--, that's why the agencies recommend that divers throw up into their regs: so when the gasp reflex comes, you will not aspirate water openly.
Manufacturers make their regs relatively vomit-proof... just make sure you chew your meal well before a boat dive to avoid large chunks that may get stuck in the valve and cause a reg free-flow. :)
I use the seasick patches often. They are good for 3 days and stay on with no problem even when diving 4 dives a day. Dehydration can be a cause of seasickness, I drink at least 1 litre of water before going to the boat and then 1 litre b4 each dive. Also use bonine the night before. One guy I met at a dive resort said he takes 2bonine every 4 hrs. That works for me but I doze when the boat comes in. Another gal I met last year gets a prescription from her doc for anti-nausea pills. Not sure what it is and I need to ck w/my doc about this. Barfing at Depth should be a MASTER CARD. I mastered it at 80',70',60',50'. Although my technique is different from yours, I remove reg to do it. Hasn't happened in 7 years or so so maybe I've got it kicked. GOOD LUCK!
Those are great tips, Alex. My mum always told me to drink gingerale for jet lag because the ginger counteracts the feeling of jetlag. I had one bout of sea sickness once, I was 5 months pregnant at the time which probably didn't help either, and I did exactly as you advised. Just looked at the horizon all the time, this helped immensly.
Would those stick on sea sickness patches help? I suppose you could apply a waterproof band aid over the top to make sure they didn't get free.

There are two things I do on boat dives to minimize sea sickness:
1) Behavior: I set up my equipment at the dock when the boat is stable, because looking down and doing fine motor work on a rocking boat is really bad for my sea sickness. Know thy limitations... sit in the middle of the boat and watch straight into the horizon at ALL times, do not go to the head (bathroom), allow yourself to be impolite and not look at people when that talk to you... again: sit straight and STARE at the horizon at ALL times. If you are diving in tourist territory, have the deck hand set up your equipment for your second dive (maybe for a tip).
2) Remedies: I eat ginger with good results. I get caramelized ginger root from a natural or Asian store. This are pieces of ginger root that are sauted with sugar... I know, not exactly weight loss material, but just a few pieces make a lot of difference for me. (This also works well for me for exercising at altitude, like skiing, or running the Tahoe Marathon.)

My husband and I got certified in Indiana this year in a quarry and just recently took our first ocean trip to Key Largo in July. I had a few bouts of nausea, one that kept me from diving the Spiegel Grove. I had found on previous dives that I was more nauseous after the first dive, so on that morning I decided to take the Triptone on the boat so it would kick in by the time I was done with the first dive. Not a good idea...especially since I took it on an empty stomach. The next day I stopped and got some orange juice and a Pay Day bar (and of course took the Triptone before I got on the boat!) I felt better than I had on any previous day. I highly recommend the Triptone, which you can find in a dive store. I found it much better than dramamine. And, I think the carbs from the o.j. and peanuts really did wonders for me. May not work for everyone, but it saved me the rest of the week. My husband and friend tried it also and thought they had felt a little bit better as well. One thing that everyone kept telling me was that no matter how bad you feel on the boat, you will feel so much better if you get in the water. I wish I would have listened to them on the first Spiegel trip. Good luck...hope things get better for you!!
Hi all! I was just recently certified in Miami (winter 2008)and have a question (along with a story) for anybody who has any experience with sea sickness...
I tend to get a little queasy on boats... my first open water dive was quite an experience! The water was pretty rough... I had never actually gotten so sick that I had to vomit but this trip out, as soon as the boat stopped, I started throwing up. The crew had to physically put my tank and flippers on me...I felt like crap but was not giving up on doing the dive. So anyway-- I did the dive-- the water was actually pretty rough 25-30 feet under. I ended up throwing up at the bottom 2x. (This should be a scuba skill because let me tell you- I didn't even freak! Just purged my regulator and let the fish indulge (yea really gross right?)...
Managed to get back into the boat and throw up about 3 more times while everybody else struggled to get back in the boat as well. They ended up canceling the 2nd dive that day due to the rough waters.
The remaining dives were done in a lagooon so no sea sickness.. just poor visibility. LOL.
My dive instructor told me to do the following next time: Take two dramamine the night before a dive Then take 2 non-drowsy dramamine the am of the dive.
Has anybody else had any issues with sea sickness? Any other suggestions??
I really would like to ENJOY my future dives and NOT have to be entirely distracted by nausea!
