HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) is the good, healthy cholesterol. HDL picks up and carries excess cholesterol away from artery walls and brings it back to the liver for processing and removal. You want this number to be high (at least 60 mg/dL)to protect your heart. Levels too low (less than 40 mg/dL) are bad for your health, increasing your risk for heart disease. Click here to learn about other important cholesterol numbers, like LDL and triglycerides.
I thought 50 was good.

Hi Kathleen, I was beginning to think I was the only one here. I missed three.
Providing the answers is just a learning thing. It's not necessary. Even after posting the answer I've missed the question when it has come up again. I thought I would start getting 3/3.

Hot flashes and irregular periods begin to occur during perimenopause (the time before menopause). After one full year without periods, a woman is considered to be menopausal, or "in menopause." Symptoms like irritability and depression may occur in some women during this time, but aren’t necessarily caused by menopause.
How was I suppose to know that?

The average American licks her way through almost 5 gallons of the ice cream each year, according to the Canadian Dairy Info Centre, but New Zealanders, at 6 gallons a year, eat more!
And I thought we liked ice cream.

ALA is one of three types of Omega-3 fatty acids. It can be found in foods of plant origin. The richest source of ALA is flaxseed, but it is also found in hempseed, canola oil, soybeans, soybean oil, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seed oil, linseeds, walnuts, and walnut oil. Once ingested, the body converts ALA into EPA and DHA, allowing it to be more readily used by the body. However, this conversion isn't very efficient.
I was looking for the true answer.

I missed 4. I wasn't going to give more then four answers; but the last was so short.

You may have high blood pressure and not even know it. While 50 million Americans suffer from this affliction, 33 percent don't even know they have it, and 70 percent don't have it under control. High blood pressure is a condition without signs or symptoms, which is why it is often referred to as the "silent killer." The only way to know where you stand is to have your blood pressure checked by a qualified professional.

Depression is not a natural part of aging. While you may think that the risk of developing depression increases with age, that's not always the case. In fact, studies show that the elderly are more likely to be happy and content with their lives than their younger counterparts. Depression can occur at any age (even in children), but it is most common in people between the ages of 24 and 44.
The second time I got it wrong.

The recommended heart rate range for aerobic exercise is 60-85% of your maximum heart rate. This range is called the target heart rate (THR) zone. This range is ideal for the general health benefits that come with exercise, and for weight loss. You can use your THR, the "Talk Test" or Perceived Exertion to make sure you're working out in a good intensity level (not too easy, not too hard). For more information on measuring your exercising intensity using the methods above, read our Reference Guide to Exercise Intensity.

Carbohydrates include starches, sugars and fiber, which is an indigestible form of carbohydrate.

The word "aerobic" means "with oxygen." Aerobic and cardiovascular exercises usually refer to the same thing, but the words themselves do not have the same meaning.
According to the long-term Nurses' Health Study, which follows the habits and health of 72,000 female nurses, three hours of brisk walking each week (that's just 30 minutes per day) can lower a woman's risk of heart disease by 30% to 40%.
It's true! Cooking in cast iron adds a significant level of iron to the foods you cook, especially acidic foods such as tomato sauce.
I got it right last time.

I missed two.

Before menopause, women have lower rates of cardiovascular disease than men, in part because of their higher levels of estrogen. After menopause, however, the rate of heart disease in women continues to rise. Women who are 65 and older will experience heart disease equally as often as men of their same age. Get the facts about heart disease in women.
I knew it was either before or after menopause.

If your goal is to build strength and muscle size, then aim for fewer reps (such as 8-10). Because you are doing fewer reps, you will need a heavier weight to reach muscle exhaustion in each set, so that's where the phrase "heavy weight, low reps" come from.
I didn't think 8-10 went with fewer.

I missed seven. Six before I got one right. No explanation - a lot of guessing.

Calcium is present in the body in greater amounts that any other mineral. Calcium builds strong bones in both length and density and is vital to the formation of teeth. There is about 2 - 3 pounds of calcium in the body, mostly concentrated in the bones and teeth.

Depression is not a natural part of aging. While you may think that the risk of developing depression increases with age, that's not always the case. The recommended daily vitamin-K intake for adult males is 120 micrograms; women need 90 micrograms daily.

Sorbet is usually fruit and sugar that has been frozen. Sherbet has a fruit juice base but often contains some milk, egg whites or gelatin to thicken and richen it. It's a creamy version of sorbet.

Continuous training is the most common method of aerobic exercise. It involves sustaining one exercise intensity for several minutes 20-60 minutes (or more for long-distance training) at a time.

Losing weight (if you are overweight), exercising regularly, eating a heart-healthy diet, and quitting smoking all work to improve your cholesterol levels.

Harvard researchers looked at 11,000 men and determined that one hour of regular, moderate exercise (equivalent to brisk walking), done five days a week, may cut a man's risk of stroke in half.

Missed two.

Remember, to lose weight, you need to create a caloric deficit. You can do this by cutting calories from your diet, by exercising more, or by combining both diet and exercise. Because you need to give you body a proper amount of fuel for energy, nutrients, and to ensure weight loss, it can be hard to cut a large amount of calories by dieting alone. By adding exercise, however, you'll be able to eat more and still meet your goals. Just make sure that you account for all the exercise you do when you set-up your SparkPeople program. This way, you'll get an accurate calorie recommendation for you to lose weight at a healthy rate. To learn how your calorie recommendations are determined—and how exercise fits into that equation—check out Calorie Calculations 101.
I knew that. Again, I thought it was a trick question.

Raspberries contain oxalates, a naturally-occurring substance that can build up in body fluids and crystallize, causing health problems. If you have any kidney or gallbladder problems, you may want to avoid raspberries.
That’s right it’s cranberries.

Many doctors and health experts agree that vaccination (the flu shot) is the best way to avoid the flu. Talk to your doctor about whether or not you're a good candidate for flu vaccination. According to the National Sleep Foundation, lack of sleep can impair the effectiveness of the flu shot, so make sure you are well rested and caught up on any missed sleep before you get a vaccination. For more tips to beat the flu once you have it, click here.
I didn't know about the sleep (it doesn't have anything to do with the question). The question was the best way to fight flu.

Because it is abundant in many foods, a deficiency of vitamin E is rare. Vitamin E is found in a variety of foods. The best sources include wheat germ and wheat germ oil, soybean, corn, safflower and cottonseed oil. Good sources include margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressings, nuts, seeds, peanuts, and peanut butter. Fair sources include whole grains, corn, beef liver, leafy-green vegetables, fish and eggs.
I though I read that we don't get enough vitamins.

I missed 3. Here are the justifications for the right answers.

A 2006 study by Tufts University showed that people who consume the most whole grains are 42 percent less likely to develop diabetes.

Research published in a July 2007 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine found that when one individual becomes obese, the chance that his or her friend will become obese increases by 57 percent--even if their friend lives far away, and especially if their friend is of the same sex--71 percent in that case.
I had just read that too. I was never good with dates and number in History.

Claims have been made linking aluminum to Alzheimer’s disease and other health problems, but these claims have been unsubstantiated by scientific research. In fact, according to the FDA, taking one antacid or aspirin tablet provides the body with far more aluminum than cooking and storing an entire day’s meals in aluminum.
I just read that too. All I carried away was that it was linked not that it was unsupported.

I missed two.

The "fat burning zone" business is very misleading. It’s true that low intensity exercise uses more fat as fuel and that moderate intensity exercise (that you can maintain for 20 minutes or more) burns both fat and glucose. But, you're better off exercising in the aerobic zone as much as you can, because exercising at this higher intensity burns more total calories. You will burn a larger percentage of fat in relation to glucose when you are working at a lower intensity, but you will also burn fewer total calories and less total fat. The relative percentage of fat burned has nothing to do with weight loss—it's the total amount calories burned that counts.
Yes, it is very confusing.

The calcium needs of men and women are the same: 1,000 milligrams daily for adults up to age 50. Older adults, both men and women, need more.
Had it before and got it wrong before. I should have known I knew the right answer. Then I wouldn’t have put down the opposite of what I thought was right.

What is not a component of strength fitness? There were about 6 answers. I answered wrong. The answer was warm up.

Just one.

After consistent strength training stops, you will eventually lose the strength that you built up. Without overload or maintenance, muscles will weaken in two weeks or less! This is the basis behind why individuals lose muscle mass as they age—because they are detraining by exercising less frequently.
And the first two were easy. I was thinking it was fast. But I was going on life experience again. It took a couple of months for me to lose a noticeable amount of tone.

Oops, I forgot - I missed two.

These five components of fitness should be included in your own fitness program. To be considered fit, you need to meet certain standards in each of these five areas, which include 1- body composition (your weight, fat mass, lean muscle mass, and fat distribution), 2- aerobic fitness (ability to sustain moderate-intensity activity for extended periods of time), 3- flexibility (the range of motion of several joints), 4- muscular strength (maximum amount of force you can perform with a single contraction), and 5- muscular endurance (ability to repeat high-intensity muscle contractions). While warm-ups aren't part of the 5 components of fitness, they should be part of your workouts. You should warm-up before aerobic, strength, and flexibility exercises. To learn more about all five components of fitness, check out Fitness Resource Center.
That was my other choice.

Ideally, most experts recommend that people stretch for 10-15 minutes per day. Hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds, repeating one or two more times, depending on how you feel.
I don’t know where I got the ten from. It’s what I have been doing for a long time. At one time I was holding it for ten seconds then breathing out and stretching a little more and holding for five. A new plan – stretch for fifteen and breath out and hold for five to ten.

I got the Riboflavin one correct, thanks Gaye.

I got lucky with Choosing white turkey meat instead of dark will save you how many fat grams per 4-oz. serving?
The answer was 4 grams.

How much calcium do adults between the ages of 19 and 50 need each day?
The recommended amount of calcium for male and female adults, ages 19-50, is 1,000 milligrams daily.

Today's is a real learning lesson. Angela, I got six wrong (it's bed time).

BMI is a quick and easy way to determine if your weight is appropriate for your height. It is NOT an estimate of body fat percentage. It's just a general measure (and isn't always accurate for everyone).
That is sort of what I meant.

Most moderate exercisers will lose about one quart (4 cups) of fluid per hour of exercise, so try to drink about 16-20 ounces of water shortly after your workout to aid the recovery process.
That was my second guess, actually first I just didn’t believe it.

Vitamin K can be made in your digestive tract by the billions of bacteria that are in your intestines. Some of these bacteria synthesize vitamin K that your body can then absorb. You can also obtain vitamin K from food sources such as green-leafy vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, pork, liver, whole wheat, oats, and bran. Fair sources include fruits, vegetables, seeds, tubers, milk, and eggs.
I knew about the others. I didn’t know the body made vitamins.

Many people say they can never remember whether to starve the cold or the fever. The answer: neither! The best advice is simply to listen to your appetite because being neither hungry nor stuffed will get rid of a cold, flu, or fever any faster. "Starving" an illness is particularly a bad idea. Intentionally restricting calories only makes it harder to recover from an illness.
I started to go for the trick question. But they wanted to know what they said.

A document called a PAR-Q (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire) can help you determine if you need a medical evaluation before starting an exercise program. You can get one here.
That doesn’t really answer the question.

A diet low in omega-3 fatty acids (the good-for-you fats, from foods like flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, hempseeds, and salmon) and high in unhealthy fats (corn, safflower and cottonseed oils, fatty meats, high-fat dairy products, saturated fat and trans fats) may contribute to your risk of developing osteoarthritis. Healthy omega-3's reduce joint inflammation while unhealthy fats can increase it. Read Foods that Fight Osteoarthritis for more information.
I didn’t like salmon or safflower.

Eating chicken soup can help you recover from a cold. I got it right. After six wrong, I was scared. The answer is true.

Exercise can increase your HDL (good) levels while lowering your LDL (bad) cholesterol. You'll be happy to know that you don't need to spend countless hours in the gym to achieve the heart-health benefits of getting active. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week.

Even moderate activity, if done daily, can make a difference. Research shows cholesterol improvements are related to the amount of activity and not to the intensity of the exercise. Even if you lose little weight, exercise can help you improve your cholesterol levels. Heart-healthy changes can occur inside your body before any benefits are seen on the outside.

Although everyone should consult their health care provider before starting an exercise program, in most cases, you won't need medical supervision to exercise safely and effectively.

Your resting heart rate (RHR) is a good indicator of your state of fitness. Fit people tend to have lower resting heart rates than unfit people because their hearts are stronger and more efficient, which means they can beat more slowly when at rest.
I have to take my resting heart rate first thing in the morning when checking my blood pressure. Taking your heart rate a minute after exercising is how to measure fitness.

Use miniature chocolate chips in your cookies and reduce the amount by half. Though mini chips and regular size chips have the same nutritional content, by reducing the amount, you'll get more, smaller chips throughout the cookies. You'll save 1,050 calories per cup of chips you eliminate, or about 22 calories per cookie.
Wow! I guess it is a bad thing to buy cookies with extra chips.

I missed the one about....If you don't have enough Vitamin B-12.

A lack of vitamin B-12 may lead to anemia, fatigue, nerve damage, stomach problems, a smooth tongue, or very sensitive skin. Some people have a medical problem called pernicious anemia in which vitamin B-12 is not absorbed from the intestines properly. They are missing a body chemical called intrinsic factor that comes from the stomach lining. Others have a diseased intestine or have had a large part of their stomachs or intestines removed. These conditions require treatment with vitamin B-12 injections.

Missed 2.

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether the symptoms you're exhibiting indicate a cold or the flu. But in general, all of the characteristics above indicate the flu. Colds are characterized by nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing and sometimes a low-grade fever (under 100 degrees Fahrenheit). While a cold comes on gradually and mildly, the flu arises suddenly. The flu can cause cold-like symptoms like nasal and chest congestion, but it also results headaches, overall body aches, a high, persistent fever (102-104 degrees F), and exhaustion. It can take several weeks to recover from the flu. For more information, visit SparkPeople's Cold & Flu Survival Guide
I guess so. Other than the fever I thought they were symptoms of a cold.

Wheat (all types, including durum, einkorn, faro, kamut, semolina and spelt), barley, rye and certain processed oats all contain a protein called gluten, and all foods made from these grains (most flours, cereals, breads, pastas, crackers and cookies) contain gluten, too. Not all grains contain gluten, however. Amaranth, arrowroot, buckwheat, cassava (manioc), corn, flax, indian rice grass (montina), Job's tears, millet, finger millet (ragi), potatoes, quinoa, rice, sago, sorghum, soy, tapioca, tef (teff), wild rice and yucca are naturally gluten-free.
I started not to go with the all.

The Best Way To Get Rid Of Abdominal Fat Is To Do More Crunches.

There is no way to target weight loss to a specific area of the body because your body decides where it wants to put on weight and where it wants to take it off. The midsection is a common "problem" area for many people. The best way to lose fat is through cardiovascular exercise. It is important to do a variety of abdominal exercises (including crunches) to keep your core strong, but until that excess fat is gone, you will not see the muscle definition.

I missed 3. How else are we going to learn?

Minerals are very stable. They cannot be destroyed by light, water, heat or food handling processes. In fact, the little bit of ash that remains when a food is completely burned is its mineral content!
I guess it is vitamins that are unstable.

There are many ways to prevent this form of diabetes. Eating a healthy diet and getting sensible amounts of physical activity to achieve and maintain a healthy weight can help prevent it. Contrary to popular belief, eating too much sugar does not cause type 2 diabetes. Read more about Pre-Diabetes and preventing type 2 diabetes.
I guess I’m one of those people that make it a popular belief (until now).

Most of the fuel you use during exercise doesn’t come from the food you've recently eaten! It actually comes from the carbohydrates (called "glycogen") and fat that's stored in your muscles, liver, and fat cells. That’s enough to fuel 1-2 hours of very intense exercise or 3-4 hours of moderate intensity exercise.
I guess that means you are burning fat whenever you exercise. I knew it was carbs that were burned; I just figured it was easier to burn the newest ones.

Marj, was it True or False.

I missed 1

Carbohydrates are necessary for the regulation of nerve tissue and are the ONLY source of energy for the brain.
I had no idea.

Which burger is lower in fat?
Hardee's Slammer
Wendy's Jr. Hamburger
I guessed Jr. and got it right. I didn't know what either were. I don't go to fast food for myself.

I missed this one....

True or False: Removing the skin from a butter-basted turkey will reduce your caloric intake by about 80 calories.

The answer was FALSE:

I was thinking more calories than fat.

I missed 1.

Vitamins actually function primarily as catalysts, regulating chemical reactions within the body. They are also essential for the release of energy from food. But they do not provide calories or energy themselves.
Mine do, 19 of them. I was surprised when I found out.

I missed two.

Few people use their lungs to their full capacity. It has been reported that at rest, people use just 10%-15% of their actual lung capacity, usually a result of quick, shallow breaths that make the chest rise and fall.
When I rest my breathing slows down. It is shallower.

Healthy individuals should get their blood pressure tested by a medical professional every time they see the doctor, or at least once every two years. People with hypertension should do this more frequently, in accordance with their doctor's instructions. Read What is Blood Pressure? to learn more.
Mine gets checked every time I go to the doctor. Because I have hypertension, I go to the doctor at least every six months.

How many calories does a single gram of fat provide?
It’s a good thing there wasn’t a ‘6’. When there wasn’t I knew it was my dyslexia playing tricks on me. The answer was '9'. Now doesn't that look like a '6'.

Brenda, as in all good things, it takes discipline.

I keep an electronic journal and it's open all day. I cut the answer and paste it in my journal.

In my journal I have my schedule for the day, things I read that I want to remember, my goals, my values, and whatever else I want to remember.

Men need more vitamin K each day than women do?

The recommended daily vitaming-K intake for adult males is 120 micrograms; women need 90 micrograms

I missed nothing. It's been a long time.

I guessed at the mashed potato one. Roasted seasoned with herbs has half the calories of mashed potatoes with whole milk and butter. The whole milk is why I answered true. I was still feeling it was a trick question when I selected it.

I always wondered what 'Riboflavin' and those other things were (in plain English). They will have to be my web search so I'll be prepared.

I missed two.

Four grams of sugar equals one teaspoon. A 12-oz can of pop contains 40 grams of sugar, which is equal to 10 teaspoons of sugar and 160 empty calories.
That is why I drink diet pop. We don’t call it pop in Maryland; we call it soda. I don’t even drink diet pop on a regular base. Ever since I read that it isn’t good for dieting. (or your stomach)

Isometric means "same length." This is a high-intensity contraction of the muscle with no change in the length of the muscle. In other words, your muscles are working hard but the muscle itself remains static. Isometric exercises are good for variety and some strength maintenance, but they don’t challenge your body enough to build much strength.
I knew what isometric meant. I chose ‘still movement’ because isometric exercises are without movement. I didn’t like the word ‘still’.

I missed 1. The question asked what is the BEST way to get a resting heat rate. The answer was all the above. I thought when a question asked which is the "BEST" you would be looking for the best single answer. The answers were all correct, but taking a resting heart rate while at rest seemed to be the best. Maybe I over analyse trivia, but with health questions I should be able to get them right.

Slow & steady makes a winner of us. Even if we hit pitfalls, get up. Know that a new day is right around the corner.
Try to be all that you can be. Work at it a day at a time.

I missed 4

Here are the facts:
*Nearly 1 million Americans died of heart disease in 2002, making it the leading cause of death.
*52 million Americans have high cholesterol, a leading cause of heart disease.
*67 percent of Americans are overweight or obese, the top contributor to high cholesterol.
I knew it was up there. But I thought I had just heard that something else was the leading cause of death. It was probably teenage death or infant death.

There are no controllable risk factors for adults who wish to decrease their risk of developing allergies, because allergy development isn't related to lifestyle habits. Intervention needs to occur early--during infancy and childhood.
That is what I meant. I had a child that had allergies. Actually I missed the word developing. I was thinking that there are things you can do to stop the allergic reaction. The same child was allergic to bee stings (so was my dad). He got shots and now he’s not allergic to bee stings anymore.

Osteoarthritis usually occurs in older people (although it can afflict young adults who experience joint injuries). Almost all people over 65 show some signs of developing osteoarthritis, and by age 70, nearly every person will have this condition. However, symptoms of osteoarthritis commonly begin between the ages of 30 and 40. Before age 45, osteoarthritis occurs more often in men, but after age 45, osteoarthritis is more common in women.
Here I go putting my life situations in my answer. First, I don’t understand their answer. But, I have osteoarthritis and it was mostly guys in physical therapy.

So far I’m doing 4 – 0.
Pregnant and nursing women should get clearance before starting a workout program. A document called a PAR-Q (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire) can help you determine if you need a medical evaluation before starting an exercise program.
I guess I knew that.
