Hi Everybody!
Today is Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week. I pray you will all have a good week and a very blessed Easter. May you strive for a pain free week, but if not know that you are not alone. Our Lord, Jesus Christ, suffered and endured much more pain than we will ever have to in our lifetime. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi, I'm back and it's now Easter vacation. I've had my ups and downs but I'm still moving forward. I've had a flare up of my sciatia and am in a lot of pain. Can't do much. Have needed to rest in bed with muscle relaxers, Aleve, icing my back and Epsomsalt baths. At least I got my food back in control today. Hope everyone is doing well here. Have a Blessed Day! emoticon

Not much activity on this team, but we are still here to support one another! The weather is getting nicer finally so I am going to try and get out for more walks. I just need to schedule an appointment for myself every day to exercise in some kind of way!

Hello everyone.
I had a wonderful pilgrimage trip to the Holy Land recently. I've posted a few photos in my gallery. There was lots of walking to do but I am a trooper. One lady told me that she admired my determination. That was a nice compliment. I was grateful to have my cane to help me along, plus there were helpful people in the group to take my arm when necessary.

Hi again, It's President's week and I haven't tracked in about a week. I'm starting to track again this week. I've started the SparkPeople seated exercise videos and have gotten up to 5 minutes on each. Now the trick is to keep it up every day!

I have very bad OA in my knee and the elliptical has not irritated my knee. You can go as slow or as fast as you want. Your gait is controlled and has a much lower impact than a treadmill. If you are thinking about purchasing one, I would try it out first. I usually work out at least 30 minutes per day and my knee has actually started to feel better, losing weight has also helped. I hope this helped.

Thanks. I think I need to try something, but dont want to buy before I know what to look for. The wheel just makes them look too hard to get on and off. I will let you know what I find out as I continue to search. Donna

The elliptical machine I use does not have a wheel. It sounds like it is more like the Bowflex you are describing (uses a back and forth stride with the option of the arms going back and forth too). I find it is much better than trying to use a bicycle style machine, especially if you have hip problems. You can adjust the tension on these machines - I use the lightest part and you can go however fast or slow you want. You can always consult with a fitness trainer if you go to an exercise club. They are pretty good to recommend what works best for your condition.

This is to BABSMOORE10300 and anyone with arthritis who uses an elliptical machine. has anyone with severe (bone on bone) arthritis used one of these machines? My mobility is very limited, and the machines look so daunting. I have noticed that some are built so that it seems you are riding on top of the wheel, and others place you closer to the floor between the wheel and the handlebars. Is one better than the other is your mobility is limited? Has anyone tried the Bowflex step.....(I have forgotten the name) - which does not have a wheel, and seems to allow each foot to glide through a stride while supported from below? For bad arthritis, how do these compare to a bike? I hope someone has tried all these things, and I thank anyone who answers in advance. Donna

Hi Babsmore,
I had 3 of the injections. The first helped for about 6 months. The next two did not do anything for me.
I'm waiting to see if Obamacare will help since I have no insurance now.

Hi all, I'm 45 and have been living with OA for some time now. My doctor told me that if I was 60, he would do the replacement. These last few days have been cold, so I've been really stiff. I've gotten back on my elliptical and that has helped a lot. I've done the injections and they really didn't help, so I doubt that I'll do those anymore, since I felt like I threw $700 away last time.

Hello everyone. I just joined this team. I'm 56, diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees when I was 30 (I think). five years ago a specialist told me that even if all my excess weight was lyposuctioned off, I would still need knee replacement surgery. No insurance so that isn't likely to happen. I started with SparkPeople a couple of years ago but got overwhelmed between work, school, tax work on the side and my health. Finally, I'm back at it but tax season is coming up again. I have to keep working on this since my knees are worse and I'm also pre-diabetic. (plus bi-polar) Ahhhh, so much to do.

Good to hear from you Margo. Hang in there and keep on moving. Glad you found some comfort for sleeping.
I do seem to be running around a lot. I live a crazy life - always looking at my calendar to see where I'm supposed to be and when. I'm saving up for a pilgrimage trip next March. I sent in my $500.00 deposit along with my girlfriend. We are excited already - anyone whose been there and seen the itinerary says we will have a good time and enjoy all the holy sites in Israel.
I will be going for my six month check up for my hip later on this month. Then in September I see the specialist to find out what condition my knees are in. Always something isn't there!

So, you running around like a crazy woman by now? :-)

I'm vacationing on Cape Cod and having a heck of a time with my knees; lots of walking and climbing in and out of vans/vehicles. Oh, and nasty stairs! The first day here it was just DH and myself and we were tired from that days job and a bit of shopping and the next day, Sunday, I found a grocery store, me and about 1,000,000 of my closest friends (the rentals on Cape Cod all go Saturday to Saturday so everyone was doing their first shopping trips like us) and my husband flaked out about 2 aisles in and I had to limp around on my own.

The first night's sleep was horrible, the beds aren't great, everything lined in plastic, etc. but I went out Sunday and found a mattress pad and now my bed's a bit better. I'll be comfortable by the time we leave? LOL

Hi there - how is everyone doing?
My recovery is going very well. I am now back to work and doing most of the things that I used to do. My gait is still off a bit and I am still using the cane for now, but there has been a huge difference and I'm so glad that I have my mobility back again.

Hi Norrie,
I am now five weeks into recovery. It's a slow process to get back walking normally but I have to remember how very long it was that I had that awful penguin walk. The brain has to change its thinking and the right leg has to continue to get its muscles and ligaments in shape. I start physio at the hospital this week so that should be a little more intense than the at home exercises have been. I have been getting out a little bit with friends. Next week I will be able to get back to driving my car.
My church choir director brought me a collection of CDs that have samples of all the music in our current Catholic church hymnal so that will keep me busy for a while. I also have some packages of choir anthems that have CDs so I have gone through one of those and chosen what I think I can use for the United Church choir that I am director of. I am trying to take advantage of this down time to get through some of the things that I never had time to do before. Listening to those packages of anthems is an 'all day' project.
Do you have a date set for your hip replacement yet? I am young for this (58) procedure but so glad that it is behind me and that I now have a new lease on life. There is so much I have to offer to the world around me!

Hello Mary Beth from Ontario. So glad to hear the hip replacement went well. (I am waiting for mine) You have a great attitude to help you on the way to complete recovery. Can you listen to some of your church music in the meantime till you're back to enjoying what you love so much ? All the best. Norrie from BC

Hi there. Everything went well with my hip surgery. I had a spinal for anesthetic - that was an interesting experience it itself! I was up walking to the bathroom the night of surgery - nurse was impressed with how well I did - I give credit to all the fitness training I did in preparation. It was scary when I first got home wondering how I was gonna get around without the OT telling me what was OK to do - on the Friday all the community care access people came - OT, nurse, PT - I was exhausted by days end. I have had great support from a neighor who is a retired nurse, while my hubby has been at work during the day. I am now two and a half weeks into recovery - walking with the cane getting more confident and stronger each day, retraining the operative leg to start taking over what the other leg was doing so much of. The physio exercises get harder each week but I persevere in doing them 3x a day as instructed. I don't have a TV upstairs so I occupy my mind with reading, listening to music tapes, watching videos, making phone calls or having visitors. I got my staples out yesterday, that was a relief. Just getting out of the house for a little while was nice too. It has taken quite a long time to catch up with my sparking and other emails and getting used to my small laptop computer. Hopefully I will be able to do the basement stairs in the next week or so. I really miss doing my church music stuff. As a support worker, my clients have kept in touch by coming to visit me and/or phone calls. So nice to know that I am missed and of value to the community.
Hope all is well with everyone else.

Good to hear from you. Glad that acupuncture is working for you, and that you are getting around better. Good luck with the gluten free diet.
Busy week for me getting things done - toe nail trimming and fitness trainer workout tomorrow, hair coloring on thurs. and chiropractor on Friday. Saturday I will have to ensure the house is all clean. My children's choir will be singing at church Sat. night and then having a socail gathering. Sunday I am going to a ladies brunch at my church and then will pack my bag for the hospital. Monday is the day - can't wait for the new hip!

QUENNEVILLE a total hip replacement is scary and exciting all at once. I hope that the surgery goes well and soon you will be walking as you used to.

I'm doing really well for the last two days. I started accupuncture last Wednesday and Saturday. She is aggressively working on my ankles and I think something is working. Saturday I was exhausted after the treatment and Sunday I hurt so bad I could hardly stand up but yesterday and today I'm doing great! I ran 2 miles this evening on the treadmill and had almost no morning stiffness.. only lasted about 1/2 hr instead of the normal 2 hrs. I also started a gluten free diet on Monday and started taking much larger doses of tumeric I'm not sure if that could make a difference so soon but something has.

Thanks for checking in Kammak. Don't be too hard on yourself. Take it one day at a time. it is important to keep on moving, so I'm glad to hear you are trying to do the exercising.
I am getting a little anxious as I await my total hip replacement to take place on the 25th. I am pretty much organized and ready. I so look forward to being able to walk normally again - enough of this penguin walk!

Hi checking in. I am back up where I started a few weeks ago.. emoticon On the up side I'm exercising well and with the help of a knee brace and some exercise tape I'm fighting through the pain and exercising. Yesterday was a prime example on how I fail with the eating right.. I left work due to the arthritis pain.. we had a storm move in and I felt so bad.. I couldn't type, couldn't concentrate and was taking everyones heads off who even looked at me funny.. then I went home and got ice cream and had a pity party... So I need to stop the pity parties!!!!!!!!!! and eating sweets when I feel bad.. ESPECIALLY since my arthritis feels worse after eating sugar.. *duh* Anyway here I am.. ready to start anew... it is 9 am and I haven't had any sugar today.. emoticon

Hi everybody, had a difficult weekend. Had no energy had difficulty sleeping . It was my 3 days off, I just could not get anything done around the house this made me very frustrated. But my body won I needed some sleep. I've decided to change the way I accomplish my house work, a little daily. Can't let it pail up any more, I just don't know when I'll have a challenging day,and I know I must take of myself. When I'm not feeling well I don't eat much I'm thinking of drinking ensure because I've noticed that I'm not getting enough nourishment and that maybe why I'm so tired. I'll find out. I have been performing some activity when I am able and I know it will get better as I continue. I am learning a great deal and really enjoying it. This is a lifestyle change for me. My health is at risk and I am not a good dependent. I pray you are all doing well. Have success in your day no matter how small.

I'm getting a little bit anxious and worried but trying to remember that everything will go just fine. My husband is getting his top teeth out on the 23rd. On Tuesday he goes to the hospital for his pre admission appointment at noon then back home to see the family physician. I'm busy thinking of all the things to be done before my hip replacement at end of February.
take care everyone.

Hello Mary. Nice to see that you are still here. Good that you are making a more realistic goal. That way we don't tend to be so hard on ourselves. I am told that inches count more than pounds do. Glad you are going to Curves.

Hi! I know I haven't been on here in awhile, just letting you know I am still hanging in. I decided to chance my goal from 50 lbs lost by march to 15, it is more realistic for me. I have lost 10 since August and some inches and my health has improved. Going to curves has help my arthritis. I hope you get better. Good Luck on surgery

Yesterday I was stuck with having to shovel some snow at my place of work. So, today my hip was rather sore. But, I had an appointment with my fitness trainer today and kept it. Having done a workout with her was probably a good thing to get my joints moving along better. The Christmas stress is over now I think, so I can concentrate on getting ready for my hip procedure coming up in February. I am doing pretty good at my strength training. Have to try harder to do a ten minute exercise routine every day, not just exercising when I get to the fitness club. So, that is my challenge for 2013!

Hi there,
I have been very busy during the month of December. It is going by so quickly. I have learned to say NO to a few things just because I know I cannot do everything. Every group I belong to seems to want to have a Christmas gathering. I know I wear myself out easily at this time of year - it is the time when I always catch myself a head cold. So now, I am battling that - trying to get better before Christmas. The sinus medication for my cold seems to be helping the arthritic pains too, but tonight I am totally exhausted because I had church this morning playing the organ, then the choir had a social outing - we went to an interactive showing of the Sound of Music, followed by going out for dinner.
Off to bed early tonight to catch up on some rest!

hi there
just popping in to say that I have lost a few pounds, and I am happy the scale is moving. I am worried about christmas though, all those dainties!! I love them, so going to have to use great control. One thing I found is that if you exercise while you hurt, the pain will eventually go away. I have found this has greatly helped my arthritis. But just don't over do. emoticon

Hi there.
I've had a pretty busy weekend. I'm waiting for my husband to arrive home from his week long hunting trip. He's usually home before this time (9 pm). I can only guess that they got a deer on their final day and he had to stay and help with whatever it is they do. My husband is not one to give me a phone call while he's away, we just kinda do our own thing and I see him when he gets back. I'm pretty sure he goes back to work tomorrow so he should be getting home soon. Well, I won't worry for now, I'm sure he's fine. That is one of my bad habits - WORRY!
Have a good week everyone!

Today I went for a coffee with my THR coach and her aunt who has had hip surgery. It's good to know that I am not alone and that there are people who can share their experiences with me. Every case is different and I know that everything will go OK. That woman's hip was in really bad shape at the time - she had to have extra screws attached as there was little or no bone left. She is getting along just fine now with walking etc., but also suffers from knee problems and has arthritis in her back.

Thomasina, I am not sure what happened to Joints. His spark page does not show up, says he is offline. He was my co-leader but it appears he has deleted himself. I take it he has left SparkPeople at this time. I did receive notice of getting a sparkmessage from Joints but when I opened it there was nothing there. I hope he is OK and will come back to us again.

Is anyone else interested in being a co-leader? Spark mail me if you are. It's not a difficult job, just helps to have a second person on board.

emoticon Mary Beth!! The hard work is paying off!! When the scale slows down, it's nice to know the body is still responding with the inches lost.

Yesterday I tried on my smallest dress pants and they are from at least 12 years ago.. you know the kind that actually go right up to the waistline and they fit pretty good and I could even do the button up around the waist.. they were still a bit too tight in the butt though.. still some firming up to do!

You sound great! Now, where oh where has Joints gone.. if you read this Joints, let us know how you are making out! Miss you!

I was at the exercise club yesterday and did my weight and measurements. I have lost inches everywhere and the weight is going down slowly. This was encouraging for me to see. I feel like my hard work with the fitness trainer is paying off.
Today I was working at a house where they have split level stairs - it is really hard on my knees doing those stairs throughout the day but I managed to get through the shift.
After work I came home to go out for a turkey dinner - Christmas gathering for the TOPS group. We did Secret Santa gifts. It was a good time.

Thankyou!! It feels strange to be at goal weight and now the transition to maintenance is making me a bit anxious as I'm afraid to add too much and start gaining, but I don't want to keep losing, so it's finding the balance.. It sounds like you have found your maintenance weight.. what the body does and mind wants always seems to be different!! I'm sure you'll start to see progress soon if you keep on track.

Yes it is a happy busy. Today I am more relaxed. Went to the doctor for blood pressure check. He was pleased with my readings and so I don't need to go on blood pressure meds. I got a flu shot and also a tetanus shot with whooping cough protection. I'm thinking about getting the new shot that is available to protect against Shingles but it is rather costly. I felt tired this afternoon so I layed down for a nap. Now I am trying to catch up on things.

Hi Thomasina
thanks for posting
I have been quite busy lately. My daughter came for a weekend visit. Enjoyed spending time with the grandbaby. Ava is just over a year, walking and in the discovery stage - putting everything into the mouth.
I have not been faithfully doing my daily exercises. I guess I just get too busy with my days, but I will establish a routine soon. emoticon

Official weighin day and up .5 of a pound this week. Still an 8 lb overall loss though and I'm happy with that! I haven't been this weight in many years so am working on exercise and toning. After my hip osteo years my right leg was a full inch smaller around the knee than the left leg and finally they are the same again.

One pound a week is really good.. I did a mid week weighin just to check and I was up a pound.. I hope the scale is friendlier on my actual weighin day which is Friday.. Although I did lower my goal, so even if I stay here, I'm happy...
