Welcome to the team!

I think that is great that you are seeing a therapist to help you navigate and help you find other coping skills. I feel like you are doing the right thing if journaling only makes the urge worse.

Good luck on your journey and if you find other coping mechanisms feel free to share. Hugs!

I don't really have coping skills other than sleep. I have tried journaling, but that usually leads to me cutting. I tend to have circular thoughts. And, the more my thoughts circle, the stronger the desire to cut is. At the yearly review, my therapist actually took journaling off as a coping skill because he doesn't feel it is effective either. So, when I want to cut, the only way to keep from doing it is to sleep. But, I already sleep about 12 hours a night on average. Some nights I sleep 14 hours.

I can't believe I hadn't responded to this earlier. Maya those are fantastic ways to stay busy and keep your mind off the urge to hurt yourself. I love snuggling my cat when I'm feeling down. An animals love can really make a difference in your mood.

Glad to have you on the team!

Since getting a puppy, if I'm feeling really down or want to cut, I cuddle with her a lot. She is a super cuddly dog and loves hugs. I will also brush her. I try to find things to do with my hands that take a lot of focus. I make tiny origami cranes, I do beading projects, I paint my nails.....things like that. I mostly want to cut during certain times of the day, so knowing that I can usually have some things around to keep my fingers busy

Energy flows were attention goes.

I'm doing much better today guys! Went to church and had wonderful fellowship, came home and took a nap, then went and exercised. It's nice to feel calm for a change.

Have a wonderful evening.

Erpeltini I love that! I am a big fan of writing to help ease those feelings and I love the idea of turning them over and getting them out of our own hands. Thanks for sharing!

I have what I call a "God Box". When I am feeling really down, or really want to cut myself, I write it down on a piece of paper and put it in the box. On especially hard days, I will do this several times a day. Sometimes I am hurting so bad I rip the paper when I write on it. It's just a physical way of handing over my pain. After a while goes by, I look in the box, and at how many times I made it through and I have an overwhelming sense of strength and gratitude...

One I have gotten back into lately is painting. But really anything creative can really lift my spirit. I agree that music can definitely make a difference-both ways.

Running and/or listening to music. Reading is great too. I love to listen to positive and uplifting music like what is found on my favorite Christian music station, LIFE 101.9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (life1019.com - you can listen to it anywhere, streaming.) Tobymac is one of my favorites. I also love classic rock like Tom Petty and guitar-heavy stuff like +44... indie like Phoenix. Love it. :)

I have several coping strategies that I use: talking to my therapist, writing in my journal, doing artwork, exercising, and when I had a dog-brushing her and talking to her was helpful.

Instead of being destructive, what do you do to cope with life? What do you do that makes you feel better when your emotions are too much and overwhelming?

For me working out and writing help a lot.
