I'm still here, too. I haven't made a lot of progress losing weight, but I have learned a lot about being healthier. My motivation seems to come and go. Right now, I am feeling very motivated, and I've been working hard at the gym.

Lilybelle8 just sent us an email asking if we were still here after 3 years. My answer is a resounding YES! My progress weight-wise has been hideous, but my progress health-wise and mentally has been pretty darn amazing! This fat, unfit, middle-aged and broken down body just completely a half marathon on Saturday and without SparkPeople it would never have happened. Check out my lastest blog if you are interested in reading about the event and seeing some pictures. Yes, I am here and I am staying!

Hey, Team! Now that the Halloween candy is slowly disappearing, we still have time to 're-group' and get serious about losing a few pounds before Thanksgiving! I'm going to aim for 1 pound per week, using the Eat to Live plan - which is mostly vegetarian.

Would like to strike up a dialogue with all of you and learn what your goals and plans to achieve them are!! How about it??

Dee (and the rest of us as well) your discovery that you actually did take a step in the right direction by grocery shopping and skipping the 'evil' aisle is a great discovery. With my magic wand, which only works occasionally, I'm giving you permission (as if you need it, but just in case ...) to take even more steps in the same direction - I'm right behind you all the way.

Our anniversary/reunion is coming right up - January 10-16 will be here before we know it - and I'm hoping to have taken enough steps in the right direction to be proud of myself - even if they are baby steps. We have about 10 weeks - give or take a few days - and if I can meet my goal of losing 1 pound per week, I'll be as happy as a pig in mud!!!!

That's what I'm aiming for - so what about the rest of you? What is your aim, your goal, your plan - and how are you going to get there?

Do it, NOW!

I was looking at this week as a flop, but I realized that I did go grocery shopping (and did *not* buy chocolate) and that is progress. I also brought a box of cereal to work for breakfast instead of buying breakfast in the company cafeteria every day. These may only be baby steps, but they count as improvement too!

I have had difficulty making it all the way to eight glasses of water every day, but I am averaging 4-6 glasses each day. I just need to push a little bit further!

I had a conversation last night with someone who suggested that the story we create in our head for how things are going to be can be changed. I am changing my story to include a healthy lifestyle, even when I am not in the mood to "be good". This is my story, and I am not at the mercy of my emotional eating whims.

Since I want all of you to report your week in review, I'd feel like a slacker if I didn't do the same. This past week for me was kind of chaotic - not with anything that can't be corrected if I start right now. I'm determined to be at goal by the time our next class reunion rolls around - which is just around the corner. To do this, I'm trying to be faithful to the Eat to Live plan and also have joined the 100 Days of Weight Loss team. I think these two plans complement each other and seem to be working for me now.

What are you doing? How are you doing? What can you share with the group that might help the rest of us??

Do it, NOW!

Oh Dee, I do, I do - wish you luck!! And me and the rest of us as well. I'm right with you about not drinking enough water, and I have an internal reminder - I get leg/toe cramps at night when I'm dehydrated. Wouldn't you think the pain of nighttime cramps would prompt me to drink more water during the day?

We'll soon have snow on the ground and then my daily walks will be shorter and more infrequent - and then I'll be sorry that I didn't take advantage of more walking while the weather was good.

I'm going to follow in your footsteps this week - more water, more walking. Let's go!!

Do it, NOW!

LilyBelle8, you have definitely helped me be more positive - Thanks!!!

I am working on drinking eight full glasses of water per day. Many days I will get close but fall short. This week, I want to push past the mental blocks that get in my way.

I also want to walk more each day. As it is, I walk my dog every morning, but both she and I need more than that. Now I need to add a night time walk at least three times per week.

Those are my goals this week. Wish me luck.

I here! Did I get it right?

My body is in transition this time of the year. I do a lot of cycling from March to Oct. Muscle mass goes away and I get very tight. Season is winding down and I need to refocus.

I plan to cycle outside as long as I can. I'm going to keep intensity down and increase the functional fitness, flexibility, and strength work.

Winter is a time for strength, flexibility, and balance.

Eating, working on getting that tuned it. I know what to do, we should by now.

I will do my own challenge from Dec 26 to the Monday after the Superbowl. No bread, no sugar, clean eating all the way.

I agree! Toward a healthier end, I am committing to a few things that I will post here for accountability

1- My new answer for anything that distracts me from dealing with my son's issues or my home and health goals is - - - " No, I am overcommitted right now. Thanks for thinking of me though and be sure to ask me again in the future."
2- I WILL make the time to increase my health in some way EACH AND EVERY DAY
3 - I will choose a positive affirmation to use each time life kicks me in the teeth again. (because, lets face it, it's GOING to happen again and I CANNOT continue to allow it to derail me)

I can relate Chippee...really relate. But it's true as long as you keep trying you NEVER fail. Don't give up the good fight. I hopefully never will but it is very difficult at times. October 1st is a great day to start. It's a Monday although any day is great to start but it just seems so right that it's the 1st of the month and a Monday!! That's just my way of thinking and as long as it got me here that is what matters! Best wishes to everyone and happy October!! emoticon emoticon

This is the place for those of us participating in the Orange Pumpkin quest to post our information - weekly for sure, more often if inclined.

1. What is your goal? Mine is to lose one pound a week from now until Halloween - 5 weeks - 5 pounds.
2. I'm using the Eat to Live (ETL) plan, slightly modified from what Dr. Joel Fuhrman suggests in his book, but close enough that I know it works for me - the real question is whether or not I'll work AT it to achieve the 5-pound loss.

If you are in - how about posting what your goal is by Halloween and how you plan to get there.

I just continue to struggle. I'll do well for a few days, then slip up. I'm just so hungry lately; is it the weather? I'm having a hard time getting back to exercising. I must strengthen my resolve. I used to be able to walk in my neighborhood. Twice around is a mile both uphill and down, but we have neighbors with 2 large dogs and they let them loose at times. Being nervous around dogs, I've pretty much stopped walking which I miss in so many ways. DH spoke to them, but the dogs run free at times while this human is now stuck in the house compared to how it used to be.
Ah well, I think I'll put on some Salsa and merengues later and dance. If I put the music on there's no way I can sit still!

All I can say for most of us is: Busy, busy, busy! Maybe where we are right now isn't where we want to be, but I'm guessing that most, if not all, of us are in a better spot now than we would have been without joining Spark People almost 3 years ago - right?

I haven't lost a lot of weight (although 'things' have shifted around a little and I am down 2-3 dress/pants sizes) , but I do weigh less now than when I started and know for sure that wouldn't have been the case without the accountability I get here as a Sparker! Right now I'm favoring the Eat to Live plan - mostly vegetarian. Unfortunately I've not been able to find a diet that actually encourages candy bars and Diet soda - and that might be my down-fall! But the ETL will work for me, if I will only work for it.

In fact, I guess almost any plan will work for most of us, if we are willing to work for the Plan.

What's your plan? How's it working? How about us getting some dialogue going because we never know when it will be just the thing that someone needs!!

Do it, NOW!

My Week in review, is a week late!
We are so busy, that I've been slacking. Sure I've been keeping it within the range of calories, and sort of exercising where I can, but the calories I'm taking is a Ice Mocha latte(440 cal) for bfast, and a handful of pretzel M&Ms (17 to be exact-180 cal), for my lunch calories....I don't know if that's good or bad? Good that I'm in the calorie range & cutting back....bad that I probably should eaten a full salad with chicken & almonds for. We are non-stop for a family of 5.
1) Mon-Piano Lessons for the boys- walked with the dog for 20 min so that's good.
2)Tues- worked late & soccer practice with one son
3) Wed- Deadly ill will a cold from hell...stayed home from work & slept for 5 hours straight. Baby girl's well child visit(18mo)- shots :(
4)Thurs- Middle son's soccer & older son's baseball practice.
5)Fri- take boys to see Brave @ a $2 theatre w/ Mom(who is sick w cancer)
6) Sat- Both boys have soccer(same time different parks), it down-pours, I spend the hour+ inside the SUV with my little Miss muffet. Cleaned the house(burns calories right?) Night out with the hubby! Yay! We never do that.
7)Sun- skipped church(enter guilt) then head out to Son's double header for 7 hours! Get home & mow lawn with a push mower to burn calories.

I am trying to take the stairs more. I'm going to try to go walk on my lunch for 10 min. The problem is that I don't really take a lunch. I need to take the time...doesn't detract from any family when I'm at work...I just need to do it!
That's me in a nut shell. Family, family and family.

(From your Fearless Leader ... I'm taking some editorial liberties with a Spark Mail I received from our friend in Hawaii because her story is just too good not to share! I hope I haven't crossed any inappropriate line of behavior???)

...Aloha: I looked at our weather for the upcoming week.....Highs 85, lows 72, tradewinds 10 mph, and sunny every day (with morning mountain showers).

This weight loss has been a long journey....almost 50 lbs, but ever so slow. Initially I did Weight Watchers points plus program and lost about 25 lbs. It's a great program, but for me, I really have trigger foods (breads, starches, desserts, sugar and all those refined carbs). WW allowed these foods as long as they were within your points, but I found myself eating junk food only for days on end and my "numbers" were still elevated (B/P, sugar, cholesterol, etc). And my weight loss just stopped altogether.

This past February I saw the ETL plan on Dr. Oz, got the book and dove head first on the 6 week plan. I also joined the gym and MADE myself go, starting slowly and building up to where I am today. I hated the gym, and now I love it.

The ETL plan does not give me the opportunity to "cheat" and stay on the plan. If I cheat, it is a cheat. But I don't cheat 99% of the time. I've slipped up a few times, but I've found that as long as I don't put those refined carbs in my body, my cravings have disappeared. That has been a big bonus for me.

Initially it was difficult, but now, the plan is just a part of my life and I just go with it. I'm lucky as I live alone and am only taking care of myself.

Also, at first it was about losing weight. Now since all my elevated numbers are way way down, I realize that at close to 68 years old, I may be healthier than I've been in years.

One thing I do daily is eat a really large salad and put some interesting things in it - then I take the time to sit down and eat that slowly and learn to develop a sense of taste, rather than just wolf the food down.

So, yes, we can all succeed and we all will succeed!

Aloha, June

Do it, NOW!

I realize that for the first time, I've been not drinking as much water. Gonna get back to my previous amount.
Pool just closed, so I'll be getting back to regular exercise. This will be a challenge, but I'm gonna do my best to make that a routine again.
Last, I'm going to try to be more positive. I'm hoping to jump start my losing again, and not just bobbing around like I've been for such a long time. The important thing is:

I'm still here!!!

Good subject!

My week in review:

1. I am in a team challenge on the San Antonio team to post and count all fruits, veggies, beans, and legume servings each week. I'm averaging 5 servings of veggies/fruit per day ...FINALLY!

2. Went with my photographer/sister-in-law to a local park for my son and fiance's engagement shoot. I discovered the trail and area on one of my training walks. My dad was a professional photographer and I used to play assistant to him. Was so gratifying to be able to bring something to the table in the way of experience and know-how in positioning them and staging shots, especially when I totally love the subjects! Pics came out lovely.

3. Only got to walk 5 of the 8 miles we planned on Saturday due to part of the trail being flooded. It's been raining for days in water-starved San Antonio so I won't complain.

4. Made my very first strawberry preserves and canned them today. Made them low sugar by using 1/3 sugar and 2/3 stevia. Hubby and grandson had jelly biscuits while the preserves were still piping hot and proclaimed them delicious. Going to try my hand at spiced apples next week.

5. Finished reading The New Rules of Lifting for Women. Looking for a used weight bench and barbell set if we can't find a great buy on new so I can put some of this into practice.

Goals for this week are to increase water consumption by 25%, hit the gym at least twice in addition to my at home workouts, and to walk 8 miles next Saturday.

week at a glance - sucked, but there is light at the end of the tunnel

current issues in life - just to get everyone caught up....
1) My almost 7 year old son has had some behavior issues for a while, but things really bloomed a few weeks ago when he started first grade. We KNOW he is smart, but our research ( I am an RN and my DH is getting a PHD in clinical therapy) indicated he was probably ADHD with an impulse disorder. We are now taking him to a NeuroPsychologist who currently thinks he is gifted with anxiety and in the wrong learning environment. It's been weeks of appointments with doctors, with the school, paperwork for both, starting the evaluation process at school and with the NPsych...

2)I am not working, and haven't been for a while due to an injury and then my son's issues. so that creates stress about finding a new job as well as money flow issues. So we have less income and more bills....argghhhh!

3) The NPsych says I am the glue holding my family together right now and she wants me in treatment, so I am already stressing about having to talk to someone about the things in life I struggle with... ARGHHHH!!

The above creates 3 issues for my health - I don't make time to exercise at all, I skip meals which is horrible for my already freakishly slow metabolism, and when I do eat I am starving and I overeat and/or eat comfort items rather than healthier items.

So my focus for next week is just to get back into the "I deserve to focus on my own health" groove with the following:
Drink my 8 glasses - not a problem since I live in the desert
exercise for a min of 10 min 5 out of 7 days -I suck at this
shoot for 8,000 steps a day - my knee injury makes this a challenge
log all my food on the tracker - this has really helped in the past!

See - Now that's what I'm talking about!!! It has only been minutes since I posted this topic, and already have Spark Mail from class mates, who are ready, willing, and able to "try again" - even, as life does get in the way sometimes.

Good for us - we're going to "do it" this time! And for those who have already "done it" - your help and motivation for the rest of us is invaluable - keep sharing!!

I'm headed for another glass of water - catch you later. And, THANKS!!

I probably will come up with a more compelling, snazzy-sounding 'topic' name as we go along, but for now - and to get us started as a Team - This Week in Review covers our challenge.

The plan is this: Each week (or day, if you are so inclined) we will post the results of our week (or day), knowing that each week will likely not be as successful as we had hoped, or maybe even being surprised that we did much better than we had hoped or expected.

I'll start by saying that several of you have posted somewhere on Spark People - either on this team or others - and I've gotten some good 'vibes and info' from your postings. I've determined to help myself be more successful by:
1. Drinking more water
2. Paying attention to the supplements I need - like D3
3. Follow more closely the plan I currently favor - which is the Eat to Live plan
4. Seek out others who are in similar situations - especially on this Team
5. Check in here often to see what I can learn from you - and learn from your experiences.

Being a team leader is not easy, especially when my heart is only half in the game - but I really want our Class Team to succeed and hope you'll join in weekly, daily, ...whatever works for you! Let's go team - we started this for a reason and that is a good reason to continue - onward and upward!!

Do it, NOW!
