Did very well in year one, first year and a half actually. But got sick, began exercising less, and wasn't as consistent, for the first time, in journaling food.
I've backslid a bit, gained 6 of the 38 pounds I lost, but have lost one so far. Having the hardest time re-setting my weight loss, but this is no fluctuation now so think I'll do that and reduce my goal weight by a few pounds while I'm at it. I KNOW I can do it, just need to reclaim my positive attitude, ramp up exercise, and journal every bite.
Love this discussion and the prospect of helping each other out.

O.K., people ... we have got to help each other and what better way than to speak up and say what is Sparking us in Year 2. I'll start (again) by saying that I know if I don't stay with a self-discipline program, that I'll really relapse and be worse off than I was before I started! No kidding - we might not be where we want to be, but most of us are in a better place than we were - right?

What is "sparking" you?

Do it, NOW!

When I first joined Sparkpeople I was really excited and motivated, I asked my mum to buy me The Spark for my birthday a month later, and I read it from cover to cover. I went to the gym and started swimming again and tried to eat as well as I could. I love to rack up Sparkpoints, so would track as much as I could to earn them! A few months later I lost all my momentum- I think it was a case of being spread rather thinly around my family who needed me at the time. My sister became pregnant and had gestational diabetes which needed 3/4 check-ups a week at the hospital, as I was to be her birth partner I went to all these appointments. At the same time I was also going to the hospital with my grandmother (who I am now a carer for) we discovered she had cancer. After two operations she is now on the mend thankfully. My husband had also been off work sick which caused money problems and my son was having trouble at school. I decided to appeal against the decision of my local authority to keep my son at the school that wasn't meeting his needs- this meant reams of paperwork. Eventually after I gave the school educational psychologist permission to reassess my son- I got what I wanted.

My son is now in a school that meets his needs and he is happy.
My husband is back at work and he is happy.
My sister had a beautiful baby boy and is fit and well.
My nan is cancer free and that makes me very happy!

I'm not trying to make excuses- I just felt that dieting and exercise were not important in the big picture at the time, (and I was shattered!) Now I realise that if I don't take care of myself I can't help all these people as I won't be in any fit state!

I am a person that really avoids looking in a mirror-I don't like what I see, and I thought to myself-it's never going to change until I do something about it. I suppose it's also an age thing, I've been overweight almost all of my adult life and I thought, I can't be the fat one in the family photos any more. I don't want to get to 40 and still be hiding from my own reflection. So here I am again, starting over and so far I have lost 4lbs in one week. It's not much I grant you but at least it's a loss and not a gain. I'm going in the right direction for once!

Thanks for reading this-I hope I haven't bored anyone to sleep LOL!

Sparking me in year two is change. I want to change and be happier and healthier. I don't want to be the fattest person in my family anymore. In fact I don't want to the fattest person in my work place or in my H.S. graduating class. SO far I have lost 25 pounds since the end of February. I've been on a high-carb diet and working out almost every day. I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm getting results and that's all that matters.

Make Today Count!!!

Hello teammates - I've hit a major wall recently and am only just now deciding that if I don't get on the ball real soon, I'll undo all of the good that I did for myself last year. CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN!! I worked too hard to get rid of 10 pounds, even though it was only 10, it was still better than nothing - and I can't let it all go away now. So, here's my plan: I've always "said" that I follow a low carb way of eating - and now I'm wondering just who I thought I was kidding?? Certainly not this body of mine. But beginning yesterday, I can now honestly say that I am following a low-carb way of eating - and to hold myself accountable, I'm HONESTLY tracking every bite that goes into my mouth.

It is amazing what we (well, maybe just me??) can eat in little tiny bites and tastes and other dangerous eating habits. My Spark Page says: If it is to be, it is up to me - and I think it is time that I take myself serious!!

Do it, NOW!

ok Lily - Spark has helped me do well regarding meds... I am in a 3 week trial without 2 of them.. if I make it through the end of next month without significant increase in need for them they will be gone!!!

I am starting week 5 of the 5K your way challenge from Spark and its been wonderful... I have one more training walk of 40 continuous minutes and then come Friday I'll be ready for my 5K walk... I'll either stay at some sort of maintenance walking or try out the walk/jog 5K (my knee will rule on whether I do it or not)! Its definitely motivating along with our newly found sun and above freezing temps!

Today what is sparking me is a report from the Doc about my blood work. And I'm sooo glad to have Spark Friends in on this game plan with me to take control of myself. Obviously there isn't a "fairy godmother" out there who is going to wave a magic wand and "fix me up." So I'll be counting on Spark Friends to help me out. O.k.??

I think of last year as my year of preparation. I learned a lot, learned to utilize the SP site well and I made some healthy lasting changes to old habits; I drink water ALL the time now, I don't drink soda at all anymore, I have changed the focus of my diet to fruits and veggies and I have learned to love the effect of fiber on my nutrition and my body. Last year I was finishing nursing school (heavy helpings of stress combined with NO time) so I was just very pleased to finish the year without significant weight gain.

This year, I FEEL different. I feel poised on the edge of some great changes for my health that will be reflected in my weight, energy, stamina and outlook on life. I no longer think "I wonder if this will work, if I will lose some weight" now I KNOW I will lose weight and improve my health. Now I think "what can I do TODAY to improve things, I wonder WHEN I will notice the changes in my clothes, the scale, myself". It's great to have a safe place, where people understand without judging, the challenges we each face in our personal quests to change our lives. It's great to be a part of a team that supports and motivates each of us toward our own goals. I am down 13 lb from my highest weight and working on my next mini goal (lose 5lb in March) so I can accomplish my medium goal of a 10% loss by the goal date I set. I hope my spark helps someone, the way the spark of others has inspired me to keep plugging away!

Great question - thanks for starting the thread!!!

The progress I made in year one is sparking me on into year 2... While I lost less than half of what I had hoped to lose I still have lost about 40 pounds since joining Spark. The vaious teams and people I have met have helped me going too... I too joined the winter 2010 and winter 1 2011 challenges and the team spirit kept me on track.. and more recently I joined the new 5K Your Way challenge which has upped my walking over what I was ordinarily doing with the dog. The 5K has gotten me off the many month's plateau I was on.

I still have a lot of weight to lose and I need to get started on my ST so I am hanging in!! Results, even though not as rapidly coming as I had hoped, is sparking me into year 2!

I am down 35 pounds since last year and feel amazing. But with that said, I worked very hard at it and I know the journey will nver end because I did work so hard at it. What keeps me focused is for the first time in my 56 years, I am doing this for me. I want to see my grandkids get married and have their own children. I want to be able to walk and move and not have to depend on others to do it. The motivation is that I like who I am and deserve everything I am working for. I am about half way there to my goal and I am going to work just as hard as I did this past year because it is never too late to make a change and I am doing it for me because it has made me a better person...

I've lost 18 pounds since last January. I didn't realize until I began to type this post that I did it when I was tracking my food. Since I stopped doing that, I have stopped losing weight. What a revelation!! Straight back to tracking, then!! Apart from the weight loss, I feel fitter. I exercise more and with ease and pleasure (just walking the dog as I'm still recovering from a broken leg but am hoping to start gentle jogging/running as soon as I think it's safe). I eat even more healthily than I did before and know more about living a healthier lifestyle.
So year 2 goals: Lose another 18 pounds.
Start jogging/running

I joined a private (but anyone can join when they start) spark challenge team in the fall. 5% Fall, Winter, (or whatever season) Challenge. You can see some examples on my spark team page. The leaders have weekly challenges that have teams (I'm on the CATS team), competing for fitness minutes and extras, like blogging, water, sodium, veggies, etc. While I haven't lost my 5% of weight, the fitness minutes helped me keep challenged through Christmas to keep adding to the team's fitness. Now I'm in another one, only this one the weight loss in pounds will count more than before, so a team can't just win with only fitness minutes. I maintained my weight all through Christmas and now I hope to lose my 8 pounds total in 8 weeks. Since I lost 30 pounds my first year on spark, 1 pound a week seems a good amount. Each team is encouraged to help teammates and I really need the connection to keep me on the right mind set to lose.

Oooh this one makes me have to think...

I've done pretty well with eating, was fairly active between walking and golf last year. I lost 30 lbs. from Jan - Aug. It was a goal I set for my 35th High School reunion (and at my high school size, since I was big back then too). Most of the people I hadn't seen since the day we graduated! I kind of stopped after that. I did manage to keep all but a couple of pounds off and even made it from Thanksgiving to New Years without gaining a single pound!

So now, My Motivation in year 2... it's me... That's right, ME! I am the only one who can control what food I shovel into MY mouth. I am the only one who can get my *ahem* off the couch when I just want to curl up and watch tv. No hubby, no kids, no pets. My family is 3000 miles away and my friends are on different schedules. I HAVE TO DO THIS FOR ME!

So I am eating healthier, really working out now. Strength training plus aerobics. I'm getting close to shedding another size worth of clothes and get the next size down out of storage.

I'm looking forward to my 30th reunion already, but I want to be at my ultimate goal much before then. I don't want to be healthy for one day, one weekend, one trip. I want to be healthy for the rest of my life.

"Fall down seven times, get up eight."
Spark on!!

I'm so happy to see this thread!! This past year I've lost about 10 pounds - give or take one or two (depending on the day). While that isn't a huge loss, it is a huge accomplishment for me. And, as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, I know that had I not been "Sparking" I would have GAINED 10 pounds or more. So, I think I'll give myself credit for losing 20 pounds this past year! When I use that "creative math" it helps to explain a lot of things that make no sense otherwise.

I'm constantly amazed at Sparkers who lose consistently (I'm not one of those). I'm also amazed at Sparkers who lose significant pounds weekly, or monthly (I'm not one of those). I'm amazed at Sparkers who are so consistent with their exercise that they could actually track it weeks in advance with an amazing degree of accuracy (I'm not one of those). But I'm also amazed at Sparkers who lose a little, backslide a little, get with the program again and lose a little more. I AM ONE OF THOSE, and it is good to be among friends. I'm amazed at Sparkers who exercise a couple of days, and then for one reason or another, let several days go by before they do it again - BUT the important thing is that they DO it again. I AM ONE OF THOSE, and I feel like I'm a part of a very special team.

I'm pretty sure that Year 2 is going to be a great one for me. I've learned a lot about myself this past year - about my likes and dislikes - my fears and joys - and most of all I've learned that I actually quite like myself and wish that I had a friend just like me! So, until I find a friend just like me, I'll just have to be my own "best friend" - and that won't be all bad. Now don't get me wrong - I do value all of my terrific Spark Friends and I truly appreciate your encouragement, friendship, suggestions, and all that you say and do for the rest of us. However, I'm quite looking forward to really solidifying my friendship with myself.

So - here we go to Year 2. See you all on the upward trail!!!

That is AWESOME!! emoticon

Well I think I did pretty good last year. Yes I got in a rut for a while but even though the pounds were not coming off the inches were. So that helped me keep going. I am also a part of a wonderful group (Bahama Mamas) & that really keeps me challenged. I have started a team w/another lady for crunches & in my 1 yr. blog I posted a pic. WOW I didn't even see the difference the crunches were making until I posted it. So that team is really helping w/consistency. Seeing this team getting active is also great. We should really check in atleast once a week to see how everyone is doing & help encourage each other. After All it's like when we were in school(our class), we can see each other grow (or in our case shrink) LOL in size & grow in knowledge. Thanks for this question?? At first I would have said What's Sparking me? Knowing that I WILL REACH MY GOAL this year! But it is way more than that now. emoticon

II really didn't do much during Year 1 and am finally on track now. Why now? Stopped a job I didn't like. Joined the Flylady team and got my home cleaner and more organized (set the stage for better eating and exercise). Automatically walk with husband 6 days a week rain or shine (good for dog and husband too). Decreased strength training to an amount that works for me (8 Minutes in the Morning team). Continued gluten-free diet (more energy) (Gluten Free team). Was really inspired by those who worked hard on this team last year! Fully utilized SparkPeople!

How about the rest of you?
