I applaud you for making this decision. I told DH that it would be his decision to make for himself, and I would support either way - he chose to not disclose to most people. But then, when he finally did talk to his supervisor at work about it, and a few close friends, he said he felt like a weight was lifted off his shoulders. So I hope you feel freed up once you do tell people.

And that is horrible about your friend - I hope the police arrested the people who did the beating! That qualifies as a hate crime!

Lots of hugs to you!

I dont think it sounds selfish of you at all, I wish my husband was more open about his status and getting support from others. He hasnt disclosed his status to anymone outside his drs and myself. That sounds horrible about your friend, people are so ignorant and hateful sometimes. When my husband found out his status he was afraid I wouldnt want to be with him anymore, I love him no matter what and though this is challenging for us both I married him for sickness and health. Hugs to you my friend!

I have made a new decision about disclosing my status. I have decided I could not care less who knows. Not that i will be running door to door announcing the fact, but i have found that hiding my status makes me stressed and sick. my boyfriend was having a bit of a problem with this decision until i told him how important it was to me to be out n the open. I am hoping to join my State Community Advisory Board in the fall and disclosure is a requirement as we lobby at the statehouse and the press is sometimes there. I am sure this will cause quite the tidal wave in my immediate family --all of whom are aware of my status, but I have decided that I have to think of myself first here. Sounds a bit selfish--maybe if hiding was not so stressful. I have become a peer educator at the agency I get my case management from, so obviously my clients know. I have just decided that I'm tired of hiding it and never talking about the "pink elephant" in the room. I may lose a few friends and extended family, but so be it. I'd rather be honest and be myself than continue to contribute to the fear and stigma that surrounds me. I have a friend who was badly beaten by her neighbors a few months ago when they discovered her status. Its time this stopped. I feel disclosure is everyones personal choice--and their choice alone. After what happened to my friend I know it is sometimes dangerous to have people find out you have HIV. But I just can't take the nonsense anymore.
