“Don’t let what others think decide who you are.” ~ Dennis Rodman

I’m pretty sure that I’ve already used this quote before, but recent things have come to light in my life that allows this to be motivation for me again.

There has been one main person in my life whose attitude and actions has made it nearly impossible for me to be independent of them. Thanks to some research and a few positive words from others…I’ve been able to see things a bit differently and I’m making some serious changes in my life.

Of course…My weight loss and health journey are always included in my changes. While I was visiting my sister for a few weeks, we were able to encourage each other and push each other. It was such an amazing feeling! It was so nice to be reminded that I still have someone on my side.

This is what I’d like you all to remember. You have someone on your side. You have me. You have the other members of our group. But most importantly…you have YOU! And you are enough. Do this for yourself. Be happy. Be healthy. Be You!

“Press on – nothing can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Perseverance and determination alone are omnipotent.” – Calvin Coolidge

Today, someone tried to put a damper on my energy. As most of you know, I send out motivational emails as often as I can. These emails are for my benefit. They make me feel good. I like the way the energy feels when I’m putting words on the page. I do not claim to be a writer or a psychologist. I am simply an overweight woman trying to get healthy. And if my words can lift somebody’s day or encourage them to do something, then that makes me feel good.

After returning home from my son’s baseball picture day this morning, I jumped on the computer and saw I had a few emails on SP. As I was reading them, I felt my heart warm. The comments are so wonderful and appreciated! I couldn’t ask to have a better support system than the one I have on SP. But…there’s always one. What were her words, you ask? “Please do not send this garbage to me.”

I have asked this person to remove herself from the team. I lead over 20 teams and do not want to specify which one it is. But know this… I WILL PRESS ON! Negativity is not something that any of us need in our lives. We have all joined SP for the positive energy and words of encouragement that are offered from our peers and friends.

We ARE strong! We WILL press on! We WILL succeed! Let us all move forward with perseverance and determination!

“Ask yourself if what you’re doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow” ~ Unknown

Sometimes it feels like we’re always starting over. You start the day off with the best intentions, but then something happens that makes you lose your way. You think to yourself “that’s ok…I’ll start again tomorrow”. But when tomorrow comes, something else happens to through you off of your game. I know for me, I start thinking… “Why even bother anymore?”

But the truth is, you’re never really starting over. You’ve started once. And every day is just a continuance of your start. Sure, some days are worse than others and some days are better than others. You may go days, weeks, or even months without working out. That’s ok! You know that when you start working out again, you may not be as fast or strong or have the endurance that you did the last time that you worked out, but you know you’ll do better than you did before you EVER started working out.

You know in your head and your heart what you have to do. You know how to keep moving forward. I started going back to the gym regularly. I even convinced a friend of mine to start going with me! He thanked me. He doesn’t like going by himself and now he has a workout buddy!

Keep your head up. Be proud of who you are and what you can do. You ARE strong!

“Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.” ~Doug Larson

Let’s face it… Bacon makes just about EVERYTHING taste better! Well, at least it does around my house.

How’s the year treating you? Are you eating more greens or more bacon? My apologies for having been gone for so long. Unfortunately, I was laid off in mid January. So once again, I’m looking for work. (I’m trying to get a side thing going with children’s books, but not having any luck just yet).

Let’s all keep our heads up. New challenges will be posted on the 1st! And I’m planning on being back in full swing VERY soon!

EXERCISE to be fit, not skinny.
EAT to nourish your body.
And always … IGNORE the haters, doubters and unhealthy examples that were once feeding you.
YOU are worth more than you realize.

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend! My company had our holiday party Saturday afternoon. I have to admit…I had 2 pieces of cheesecake! LOL But it was worth it!

I actually got a piece of good information on Friday. My doctor confirmed that I do have a thyroid problem and most likely do not have diabetes. I’m really glad that I didn’t let the first doctor put me on diabetic medication. He never even took the time to go over my blood work with me. He just told me “You’re diabetic”. So when I went to the new doctor, he showed me ALL of my results and then asked for more blood to confirm the thyroid issue.

So… I should be picking up my thyroid medication today after work. Yay! I’m actually very excited to be doing so. The doc said I should start feeling a difference immediately. He actually laughed and said “Now your healthy breakfasts and lunches might actually work!” Hahaha!

Don’t be afraid to tell your doctor every concern that you may have. I’ve also been having issues with my right heel. Turns out I have 3 bone spurs! Yikes! But it was because I told my doctor that I had pain that comes and goes in my heel. He was concerned for my well-being and didn’t want to write it off. So he X-rayed me and found the spurs.

I’m hoping to bring good news soon. I’m hoping that my efforts will now actually get results.

Keep your head up and keep moving forward! We are strong!

Soooo.... How's the month treating you thus far? Have you recovered from Thanksgiving? LOL I think I have. Now on to the next hurdle...Holiday Season! (This includes ALL December holidays. LOL (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, St. Lucia Day, Ramadan, etc). I know that most of these come with food, fun and festivities!

First...I've been totally watching what I've been eating. I make eggs and toast for breakfast every morning. I have a salad and frozen dinner (Lean Cuisine, WW, Healthy Choice) for lunch. But for some reason, I'm not losing any weight! I'm walking in the evenings. Parking far away. Taking stairs instead of escalators. Still not losing weight.

Well...It seems that I may have a thyroid problem. My numbers in the past have been under 5. According to my last blood test, I'm at 45! Yikes! So my doctor is running another blood panel today and we're going to see if I'm really diabetic... Or if I have a thyroid issue.

Either way...I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing. I have a follow up appointment next Friday morning to review my blood panel results and some other things. Once I get those results...I'll have a better idea of what direction to go next. emoticon

Second... This article was on SP today. I've done the Biggest Loser Weight Loss yoga and loved it. I've done other yoga videos that are on YouTube, and love them! But this article opened my eyes a bit more. I think I really need to incorporate yoga in to my daily schedule. I think it would help with EVERYTHING! Stress being the most important. LOL Check out the article. I think you'll see some awesome information.

“The key to a better life isn't always a change of scenery. Sometimes it simply requires opening your eyes.” - Richelle E. Goodrich

Well…It’s December 1st. Are you ready for Christmas? That’s ok…Me neither. LOL But it’s also the beginning of a new month. Did you meet your 2% Challenge for November? I didn’t. I needed to be at 233.2, but I’m at 237. But that’s ok! No excuses (even though we had Thanksgiving). So even though I didn’t hit my 2%, I’m still down almost 2 pounds. I’ll be reposting the 2% Challenge for this month with 237 as my starting weight.

It’s tough to try and keep a lifestyle change right now. With all of the holidays and the weather. That’s always a problem. It’s either too hot or too cold. LOL Personally, I prefer the cold. You can add layers that you can strip down.

I’ve managed to change the way I’m eating over the last week. I’m making my breakfast every morning. I was making my lunches, but I think I was still going overboard. So now I’m eating frozen meals (admit it…most of them taste pretty darn good!) and salads! And I’m enjoying all of it.

Keep your head up this month! I know that it’s going to be rough with all of the cookies and desserts going around. Stay strong! I know that I have big plans for the first of the year. Simply try and maintain. We got this!

My inspiration today doesn’t come from a quote that I search for online. Today it comes from an article/interview that is featured on SP.

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness
_a
rticles.asp?id=1573

When I read this, I felt nothing but positive energy! It brought back A LOT of happy thoughts that I’ve had over the last 2 years. The first time I walked a mile. The first time I reached 2 miles. The first time I hit 3 miles on a walk! The first time I jogged behind my son. The first time I jogged from one corner of the block to the next. My first 5K and receiving my first medal. My first 10K and crossing that finish line (with a slice of Knott’s boysenberry pie waiting for me LOL).

It reminded me that I KNOW I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. It was just the motivation and inspiration that I needed today.

I’m sitting here on the verge of tears. Not because I’m sad, but because I know that I can become a runner. And that I WILL become a runner.

Never give up.

“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

This quote can apply to just about anything! Whatever your goal may be, you have to WANT it! You have to know that there are going to be struggles. There are going to be ups and downs. There are going to be people trying to get in your way.

I quit smoking February 22, 2014. There are people that still come up to me (including my family) that tell me that they never thought that I would be able to quit. They knew that it wouldn’t last long and that I would snap and just start again. I’m happy to say… I’ve proved them all wrong! Hehe But it only worked because I wanted it to. Not because someone was telling me that I needed to or that I should quit. I had to hit my “Ah ha!” moment on my own. And when I did… Nothing could stop me.

I’ve now made the announcement that I’m going to be training for my first half marathon. It’s in April 2016. People think I’m crazy! But that’s ok! This is something that I want. I’ve just signed up for a 10K in March. I’m not going to let anything or anyone hold me back.

Don’t be afraid to do what YOU want to do. You know what you want. You know how to get it.

Are you ready to get it?

“The worst part of success is trying to find someone who is happy for you.” – Bette Midler

This is such a true statement!

People always tell you that they support you and they have your back. But as soon as you start feeling better and start moving forward and doing things that are good for you… they become haters. You start getting the comments ~ “I don’t know how you can do that. I need to eat” or “What are you giving up so that you can work out? I don’t have enough spare time in my day”.

The truth is…they’re jealous. They WISH they could do what you’re doing. They WISH they had the determination and willpower that YOU have.

Please…do NOT let the harsh words of others discourage you. Stay on your path. Stay happy and stay motivated. You’re doing this for YOU! Not them.

“Hard is trying to rebuild yourself, piece by piece, with no instruction book, and no clue as to where all the important bits are supposed to go.” ― Nick Hornby, A Long Way Down

Nobody ever said that life would be easy.

It’s pretty funny when you hear your kids say “It’s not fair!”, or “This is too hard!” And you keep telling them “Just wait”. But they never listen. Then…they’re 18 wishing they were back in school or that they had done something different while they were there. They realize that, hey…maybe mom/dad was right!

Then…as an overweight person you hear “It gets harder as you get older”. You think, ok I’ll worry about it later. Next thing you know, you’re 40 years old and at the highest weight you’ve ever been. Including being heavier than when you gave birth to your first child!

All we can do is keep moving forward. Keep moving on. Keep reaching for our goals. We are going to slip. We are going to slide. Heck…I’ve fallen flat on my face! But each and every time I get back up. Dust myself off and move on.

You can do this!

“So what do we do? Anything. Something. So long as we just don't sit there. If we screw it up, start over. Try something else. If we wait until we've satisfied all the uncertainties, it may be too late.” - Lee Iacocca

Today is September 1st. What does that mean? It means it’s the beginning of a new month. Anyone else here have a bad summer? I know I sure did. LOL

I’ve officially hit my highest weight ever. I want to blame it on the extreme heat and the fact that my schedule changed due to a new job and hours. But the fact of the matter is, I just got lazy. I fell off my routine. It wasn’t that I gave up. I just found myself giving in. Giving in to relaxing and watching a movie. Giving in to just having fast food so I wouldn’t have to heat up my kitchen with the oven. Giving in to that extra hour of sleep instead of getting up and getting a workout in.

So the good thing about the 1st of the month? You can start over. For some of us, it’s starting over from scratch. And for some of those… Starting over yet again!

As long as we start SOMETHING, we are moving forward. I actually got up that hour early this morning and got my BURN30 workout in. I’m a little tired. I had a hard time doing it. Couldn’t push as hard as I used to a few months ago… But I did it! And I’m planning on at least going for a short walk tonight. I know it won’t be 3 miles, but it’s a start.

So get up and get going. Start this month out fresh! The holidays are coming and it’s only going to get more difficult. Let’s get our habits in place so the holidays don’t hurt so much.

“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly” ~ Buddha

Worrying about yesterday brings unnecessary stress. So does worrying about tomorrow. We can’t change what we did. And we can’t predict circumstance that may or may not happen tomorrow. All we can do is live in the now.

So make the best choices you can make today. If it turns out that one of the choices you make today isn’t the best one…There’s nothing you can do to change it. You learn from it and move on. Try not to make that same decision tomorrow.

“Imagine that day, where you can finally say “I did it!” When you can say, “I never gave up, I never quit!” Imagine that day when you win that gold medal, or reach your goal weight. Where these moments of pain turn into memories for that goal you wanted to obtain. It might take long to reach that moment, but as soon as you get there, you’ll thank yourself for the rest of your life” ~ Unknown

This was so beautiful! It actually made me smile while reading it this morning. I’ve had the feelings mentioned. The one where I thought to myself “I did it!”. The first mile I ever completed. The first 5K I did at home. The first LIVE 5K event. The first live 5K event where I received a medal. Finishing my first 10K. There have been so many moments for me. They may seem small to some. To others, those moments seem unreachable.

Now, even though I’ve fallen behind, nothing can take away the fact that I have completed these goals. What are some of yours? Are they maybe to do a ½ marathon? A full marathon? Maybe your goal is to get outside for 15 minutes a day. Maybe it’s to get around the block. Either way, these are your goals. When you achieve them, take GREAT pride in doing so. It is ok to proud of doing something for YOU!

“It will hurt. It will take time. It will require dedication. It will require willpower. You will need to make healthy decisions. It requires sacrifice. You will need to push your body to its max. There will be temptation. But, I promise you, when you reach your goal, it’s worth it.” ~ Unknown

I saw this this morning, and LOVED it! I think it pretty much describes all of our journeys. As well as telling us the truth about what it’s going to take to get to where we want to be.

It’s so easy to lose sight of what you want. And it’s easy to slip right back in to old habits. I have… Many times. And it’s nothing to be ashamed of. We’re human. We make mistakes. We sometimes fall off the wagon. But it’s ok! Get back up, dust yourself off, and jump right back in.

Keep pushing! You ARE amazing!

“Because today is another chance to get it right” – Unknown

No matter how bad you’ve done today…you can always start again. Every day is a new day.

I woke up this morning and got on the scale. I’m 2 pounds lighter than I was when I gave birth to my first child 18 years ago. That’s right. I’m at my max pregnancy weight. And I’m not pregnant.

I am officially starting over today. Yes…It’s a Tuesday. Yes…It’s the 11th of the month. Nothing about today screams “START TODAY!”, but I’m going to anyway. I’m going to take my vitamins. I’m going to drink my water. I’m going to eat healthy. I’m going to walk tonight. I’m going to start taking care of myself.

Never take your eyes off of your goal. Even if you’ve completely dropped everything that you were doing (because that’s what I did), you can still reach your goal!

I found a couple of articles on this site. I think they’ll help.

Remember…You can do it! You are awesome! Just keep being YOU!

“When we stop judging ourselves, we stop judging other people. When we start loving ourselves, we start loving other people.” ~Unknown

I’ve recently hit an enormous slump in my life. I went through a loss of my job, a terrible break-up, and having to be a single mother on welfare. And through this tough period, while there were people that did everything in their power to support me and help lift me up… There were others that judged. And judged. Then they judged some more. I was kicked so low, I couldn’t even see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Then something happened… I quit caring about the ones that were judging me. I’ve paid in to the welfare system for 25 years. There was absolutely no reason why I shouldn’t be able to benefit from it for a short time.

I have now found a job. It’s great money, better hours and 95% better people than I was working with at my last job. The people here are amazing! And I’m only 10 minutes away from home. My son is finally back in day care full time and my daughter has graduated high school. Life is, in fact, AMAZING!

I’m getting ready to join a gym. My new hours make it a bit difficult to work out in the mornings. So a gym is the most logical choice. I am in complete control of my breakfast and lunch. I prepare both the night before and take them to work with me.

Don’t let what other people think or feel get you down. You are your own amazing person. You’ve started this journey for you. So keep your head up and keep moving forward.

“Everyone has inside them a piece of good news. The good news is you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is.” – Anne Frank

Today’s motivation is simple. YOU ARE GREAT!

No matter what happens on your journey. No matter what curveballs life throws at you. No matter what people say about you (and you just never mind the nay-sayers. They’ll get theirs in the end LOL). YOU ARE GREAT!

You are on this journey for your own reasons. You need to KNOW with all your heart that you CAN accomplish your goals. You CAN find love. You CAN maximize your full potential.

Keep your head held high. Move forward. And make sure that YOU know that you’re full of “good news”.

“Stay committed to your decisions; but stay flexible in your approach.” ~ Tony Robbins

I feel I am committed, but I have such a hard time meeting the goals that I set for myself. I find that I tend to OVER-commit. Does anyone else have this problem?

For example…I want to be on SP every day. Doesn’t happen. Lately there has been so much happening in my life that I just haven’t been able to find the time.

I have a 10K this Sunday. I haven’t trained one bit for it! Again…Situations change. I was doing great and getting my mileage in and then…BOOM! Catastrophe strikes! LOL But you know what…I’m going to continue with the 10K. There is an option on site to reduce your run. Not going to happen. This one thing I committed to is NOT going to change.

And with the lack of training and exercising…I haven’t been eating healthy. So I know I’ve gained some of the weight that I’ve lost. But you know what…I’ll get back on it again.

I’m still committed. I just need to not feel so bad when things don’t go the way I originally saw them in my head.

Keep your head up and give yourself a break. Nobody is perfect. And nobody ever said the road would be easy. This is still your journey. Keep getting back out there.

“This is the new year the new you. You can pass through another year, coasting on cruise control. Or you can step out of your comfort zone, trying things you have never done before, & make 2015 as the year that you elevate from where you are & soar high. Make it happen!”

I hope that all of you had a happy and safe New Year! Now…How about those resolutions? LOL

I was talking with my friend the other day. She had listed things for 2015. I told her that I hadn’t had a chance to make my New Year’s Resolution List yet. She said “They’re not resolutions. These are my goals to better myself.” And there you have it!

Resolutions tend to slip through the cracks. They get pushed off to the side of the road and are never heard from again. However…You’re already working. You’ve already started your journey. My next goal is to complete a 10K. I’m registered for it in March. But it’s not on my list of Resolutions. Why? Because it wasn’t something I knew I wanted to do until about September 2014.

I guess I don’t really have any resolutions this year. I got up and got on the scale, just like I do every other Thursday. I had breakfast. Did dishes. Did laundry. Cleaned the living room. Got the man off to work. Put the kids down to nap. I can only hope that I can continue to do these things for 2015. So I guess that’s my resolution. To be happy with me and with my life. And to continue doing what makes me happy and healthy! I’m going to soar high and make it happen!

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” ~ Fredrick Koeing

As this year comes to an end, it’s good to look back on everything that we have accomplished over the last 12 months. Big AND small. I can’t believe that I quit smoking in February. I can’t believe that I did my FIRST 5K in June. And to top that…I’ve completed 12 this year! Wow! Never thought I would’ve been able to do that. I’ve always wanted to get healthy. And by shear will…this year I have.

And do not forget the little triumphs. I came back to Spark People. I’ve been fairly active leading all of my Teams on here. I’ve had the joy of being closer than I have been in a long time to my best friend. We do a lot of 5Ks together and have plans to do many more.

But…I’m also using today to look into my future. I’ve done some research on a gym. I’m lucky enough to have a man in my life that loves me and wants to take care of me. He wants us to have memberships together (I forgot to mention that he quit smoking this year, too, because of me). I’m looking into a new weight management system (yes…that means that I’ll probably start a new support group on SP). I’d like to try and get my boyfriend on SparkPeople too! He did the gastric bypass in May and I’m sure he’d love this site.

Whatever you do tonight, do not look back on what you did not accomplish. We have another year ahead of us and can do so much more!

Here’s to a safe, happy and healthy New Year!

“You can complain that roses have thorns, or rejoice that thorns have roses.” ~ Ziggy

I choose to rejoice that thorns have roses. It’s always better to look at the positive. Sometimes there are things that present themselves in life where it’s hard to see the rose and you may end up focusing on the thorns. That’s ok, too. It’s not easy to be ever optimistic.

I belong to a group for those with special needs. I run/jog/walk/exercise for an adorable little 1 year old boy who was born with the condition Spina Bifida. I was only matched with him the weekend before Thanksgiving, so I’m still learning about his condition. This morning, I received an email from his mother detailing out the journey of both her pregnancies and the discovery of his condition and what challenges they faced. It was a truly amazing and inspiring story. And while reading this story, I couldn’t help but see how many roses this mother saw through-out her journey. She remained optimistic at every turn. Even when they had to do in utero surgery!

So keep your head high! You may only make it around the block once. But think of it this way… How far could you make it before you started your journey?

God Bless!

“The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny.” ~ Albert Ellis

Happy Monday team! How is December treating you? Have you started your own challenge? Are you determined to not gain weight during the holidays? No challenges were “announced” for the month…but there are there. We have to be able to challenge ourselves.

See how I did that? LOL It is not MY responsibility to make sure that you’re staying on track. I am here for encouragement, but you must ultimately step-up and make your choices. YOU must decide what you are going to challenge yourself to do for the month.

Don’t worry. There will be plenty of new challenges and tracking to do after the first of the year. And yes…I’m going to issue Spark Goodies for most points logged and most fitness points.

Keep up the good work!

“Don’t dig your grave with your own knife and fork.” ~ English Proverb

My goodness…It’s so easy to slip right back in to old eating habits. And with Halloween tomorrow, there’s a bunch of candy around the house. But even aside from Halloween, it’s super easy to just pick up a bag of chips or a Twinkie.

I’d like to make menus for myself. But the fact is, it’s tough to cook on a tight schedule. I have a 4 year old. So once I’m home from work in the evening, it’s all about him.

At work, I’m able to bring what I want. We have a small kitchen. No stove, but we have a toaster oven, microwave and full fridge. Today I made a ham and cheese omelet and for lunch I’ll have a bologna sandwich on wheat. These two things will keep me under my calorie goal. I also know I’m going to be walking/jogging tonight. So I can burn some of those calories.

Just be mindful of everything you put in your mouth. I’m lucky enough to be regulating my cholesterols. Not everyone is so lucky.

We can do this. We are strong. We can make the healthy choice. We just need to stay positive!

“You don’t have to be perfect in order to be successful.” ~ Anonymous

I know that I’m not perfect. And I do consider myself very successful.

As of yesterday, I have not had a cigarette for 8 months! Yay me! LOL emoticon

As of 10/18/14, I have seven 5Ks under my belt (all completed in under an hour) WOOHOO!! emoticon

I know that there are people that have never smoked, and I commend them. I know that some can finish a 5K in under30 minutes. I hope to be able to do the same someday. My point is… as long as you are doing something to reach your goals, you are successful!

Keep pushing! You can do this! You’ve made the decision to better yourself. Making that decision was your first successful step.

“Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.” ~ Malcolm S. Forbes

I am 100% guilty of this. Not as often as I used to be…but every once in a while I still have the self doubt. I still feel that I CAN’T and that nobody believes in me. I know, in my heart, that I am stronger than that. But sometimes the small set-backs can make you feel down in the dumps.

This is why I feel it is almost necessary to have you motivation around you. Whether it’s one piece or a dozen pieces. Put something up that motivates YOU! And if you’re putting your motivation up in your home or in your car, do NOT worry about what other people might think.

You ARE strong!
You ARE amazing!

“Success is dependent upon the glands – sweat glands.” ~ Zig Ziglar

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone had an amazing weekend! Did you get any workouts in? I wasn’t able to, but still did my fair share of chasing after toddlers. Hahaha!!

While the quote above is true…it is only PARTIALLY true. We do need to work out and sweat, but we also need to change our eating habits. I have been investing in new cookbooks for me and my family. I’ve started shopping quite a bit healthier. A lot more salad (spinach and mixed greens, not iceberg lettuce). Light dressing. Low fat feta cheese. Mmmm….perfect. LOL

You don’t have to eat perfect. You need to find what healthy eating habits work best for you and do your best to abide by them. But don’t deny yourself either. Saturday morning, my boyfriend took me to brunch. I had chicken fried steak & eggs with hash browns. And it was AMAZING! But I do not feel guilty for indulging. I have been doing incredible with my eating habits and even lost a couple of pounds in the last few weeks. So…To have this one meal that is not the healthiest isn’t a big deal for me. We just need to know how to dial it back in again.

We can do this!

“There is nothing noble in being superior to someone else. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.” ~ Hindu proverb

I tried to impress this upon my daughter when we did our 5K in June this year. “You’re not racing against me. You’re racing for yourself”. My bestie and I said pretty much the same thing to each other. “I’m not waiting for you and you better not wait for me. If you can go faster, GO! I’ll see you at the finish line”!

However…some people don’t believe this. Everything is a race or competition. The way I see it…This is for me. I have my own goals. As long as I finish, I’m happy. But there’s always that one. Don’t let them get to you! You are in this for you. Remember YOUR goals, and take the steps you need to take to reach them.

You got this!

“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

Happy Wednesday!

How’s this week treating you so far? How about this month? Are you doing like I am and trying to really crack down before the holidays? There are quite a few of us doing that, I’m sure.

Wanna know what the good thing is about doing that “holiday crack down”? You have no idea where you’ll end up in the next few months, but you’re taking the steps to get there anyways. That’s a huge accomplishment for all of us.

I know that Halloween is rough for me. I love the treats! But who doesn’t? We just need to maybe find something to keep alongside our “hand-out” candy that we can munch on too. Something that’ll ensure that we don’t dip into the other stuff. LOL I’ll keep an eye out for some recipes and ideas.

We can do this!!

“I know the price of success: dedication, hard work and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.” ~ Frank Lloyd Wright

Success is also walking in to your doctor for a follow-up and he shakes your hand for having done 5 – 5Ks. It was a HUGE non-scale victory for me this morning. The only things he was concerned about is my good cholesterol is a little bad and my triglycerides are a little high. But he was looking at results from May. So more blood was taken today to see how well my lifestyle change has affected me.

I’ve also lost 6 pounds in the last week and a half. All because I buckled down and dedicated myself once more.

The price of success is not free and easy. The quote is correct. You must dedicate yourself to succeed. There are times that it will feel like you just can’t go another day…but you MUST keep pushing yourself. You must NOT procrastinate!

We can all do this together!

“Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” ~ African Proverb

I love this one. Mostly because it’s true. You’ll never know if you can handle the storm if you’re always on calm waters.

During your journey, there will be turbulence. You will hit bumps in the road. You will stumble and you may fall. But your need to learn to keep your balance during the turbulence. Learn to adjust your shocks to absorb the bumps in the road. And when you fall…get back up. Keep pushing. Keep moving forward. As long as you do this…You WILL reach your goal.

“Stay committed to your decisions; but stay flexible in your approach.” ~ Tony Robbins

We all know what we want our goals to be. It’s the way we reach these goals that often becomes an issue. The plan that works for one, does not work for all.

It may take trying numerous things to figure out what works for you. NEVER GIVE UP! There IS something out there for everyone.

“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.” ~ Napoleon Hill

So I got a serious wakeup call this afternoon. I jumped on my scale this morning, and then had to go to the doctor. The doctor scale of course weighed me a bit higher, but not by much. So…I now, OFFICIALLY, want to lose 100 pounds.

This is tough for me. I am only 4 pounds shy of what I weighed when I gave birth to my daughter. At that point…it was the most I’ve ever weighed. And 10 pounds of that was baby! Literally LOL She was 9.9.

So after leaving the doctor, I started thinking about what I needed to do.

- Workout in the morning
- Breakfast
- Lunch
- Small snack
- Dinner
- Workout or jog in the evening
- Small snack (if needed)

I’m exploring a new regime at home. Been reading the books for a few days. I’m not sure, yet, about incorporating it into my daily life. But once I figure it out…You guys will be the first to know. Haha!!

I do NOT think that I have been defeated. Quite the opposite. I have accomplished a LOT since February. And the fact that I have a total of 5 5Ks under my belt this year and have been smoke free for over 6 months now is amazing! But now to focus on losing the weight.

I can do this!

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.” ~ Unknown

You are stronger than your worry. You need to know – deep in YOUR soul – that things will get better. You must believe this with all of your heart. Otherwise…the worry will wear you down. It will eat at you and make you think that you are not worthy of happiness. Not worthy love. BUT YOU ARE!

What causes worry? The people that claim to support you. Your sister. Your mother. Your father. Your “best friends”. They are jealous. They think that because they have failed in their own ways that you will too. Everyone is put on this earth for a reason. It may not be clear yet as to what that reason is…but it will be. In the mean time, don’t let false –friends/family make you think that you are nothing less than wonderful.

Believe in you.
Believe in your strength.
Believe in your heart.
Believe you WILL accomplish all that you want

“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” ~ Brian Tracy

I am at the point where I LOVE feeling awkward! It means I’m trying something new and outside my comfort zone. I’m challenging myself to do something I haven’t done before. For me, it’s one of the best feelings ever.

The day that I walked up to the merchandise table to buy stuff for my Color Me Rad 5K…I had NEVER done a live event. In my head I was wondering if they were going to judge me. Not be nice because I wasn’t some skinny chick. As I looked around, I saw nothing but smiles. There were women half my size and twice my size. There is NO judgment. But for those few moments…I felt completely awkward. I was outside my comfort zone.

When I got to the entry area for the next 5K… I was not nervous at all! I rocked my tutu and danced to 80s music. I felt comfortable. I’ve accomplished so much in the last 6 months that I felt PROUD to be standing amongst people that were there completing their own challenges.

Like to quote says… be willing to feel awkward. It’s the only way to move forward.

“Be not afraid of growing slowly. Be afraid only of standing still.” ~ Chinese Proverb

Standing still is definitely something I DON’T want to do!

After doing our 5K on Sunday, Kimmie and I decided that we are going to move forward with a run team! How fun is that!?!? emoticon

We’re working out the details and getting a FaceBook group started. We are based in Southern California…but once we get started, we’d like to share it all over!!

Do NOT stand still! Move forward. It doesn’t matter how big or how small.

You got this!

“Put all excuses aside and remember this: YOU are capable.” ~ Zig Ziglar

On Sunday 8/17 I did my 2nd live 5K event. The Awesome 80’s Run in Pasadena, CA. I did it with my bestie, Kim, for her birthday!

I didn’t condition myself for this one like I did for the Color Me Rad in June…. AND I FELT IT! LOL

At one point I started getting light headed, but luckily I hit a shaded area. I slowed down just a bit. Then kept pushing. We didn’t cross the finish line together…but we crossed it. And that, my friends, is ALL that matters.

I AM CAPABLE! YOU are capable! We are ALL capable! You just need to keep pushing and believe in yourself and you WILL cross your own finish line.

HELLO TEAM!!!!

So...I didn't just fall off the wagon. I broke the axel and sat at the candy shop across from the mechanic. We all know things like this happen! All we can do is pick ourselves back up and move forward.

"Never quit! If you stumble, get back up. What happened yesterday, no longer matters. Today is another day, so get on track and move closer to your dreams and goals! YOU CAN DO IT!'

I'm actually petrified to get on the scale. I know that I will most likely weigh more. I can come up with excuses all day. But the truth is...nobody MADE me eat fries instead of fruit. Or creamy soup instead of salad sans dressing those decisions were all mine to make. And let me tell you.... It was EASY to fall right back in to my old habits.

The bigger problem? I haven't done a 5K since June. And I have one coming up this Sunday! I'll be lucky if I finish in under 60 minutes. LOL But...I will finish. It is once again time to buckle down. I cannot be discouraged by my set back. I know what I've done wrong and will fix it!

We got this!

“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.” ~ Napoleon Hill

Just because you start out on your journey a certain way…it does not mean that it’s the right way for you. Do not get discouraged. What works for one, does NOT work for all.

My mom noticed that I was doing something different in my routine. She asked “is this one going to help you lose weight? Nothing seems to be helping with that.” I knew this was not meant in a bad way at all. I’m one of the lucky few that has an amazing relationship with my mother where we can speak open and honest and usually don’t offend the other. LOL She knows that I’m a LOT healthier than I was when my journey began, but knows that I am struggling with the weight.

My point? I have NOT given up! I continue to move forward. Even after slipping over the last 12 days (yes…12 days. And several of those were the flu).

Now…I found this article on SP today. Please remember to STAY HYDRATED!!

“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.” ~ William James

This is a true statement. Whether you believe you can or you can’t…you’re right.

I set mini goals for myself inside of my big goal. My goal was to complete a 5K this year. The first time I went walking around the neighborhood and hit 1 mile, I cried a little. It was a huge accomplishment for me. When I hit 2 miles…same thing. I just kept cheering myself on in my head. And I didn’t care about what I looked like walking down the street with my hands up in the air like Rocky. LOL I had accomplished something. And it felt amazing.

I tell myself every day that I can do this! I can get healthy. I can lose weight. I can jog. I can quit smoking (even though I have, it’s still a daily battle). I can live longer for my children. Everything with me is “I can” even when there are days that look like an “I can’t”.

Be strong. We CAN do this!

“Attitude: It is our best friend or our worst enemy.” ~ John C. Maxwell

And sometimes it’s sneaky. You think it’s your best friend and then turns on you! LOL

I’ve been keeping a slow and steady pace. I do my Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga every morning. I completed a 5K. I’m watching my calories every day. Yet the scale is climbing and climbing. Hmmm… Couldn’t figure out what was happening!

I called your co-leader (KimS76) on a completely unrelated issue about allergies. We go through the usual. Laundry soap (same). Body wash (same). Hmmm… What about food? Well, yah! Huge change. I’m eating better but that shouldn’t affect me negatively. STRAWBERRIES! I’m allergic to the darn things. LOL I know this…but it didn’t even cross my mind that the smoothies that I drink in the morning contain that many. Add to it that I was drinking them almost every day. BOOM! Itchy hands. Itchy feet. LOL Oh yah…and side effect of strawberry allergy…WEIGHT GAIN!

Now…I wasn’t really letting the scale get the best of me. But it was confusing me. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, and it kept smacking me down. It took talking to Kim to realize what the issue was.

Try and keep your attitude positive. It may not be something as simple as my strawberry allergy…but maybe there’s something that you’re not seeing. Don’t let yourself get discouraged over a bad day or a bad week. A journey like our lifestyle change is a rest-of-our-life roller coaster. We need to accept the good with the bad. We just need to keep our chin held high and strut with our accomplishments!

“Don’t compromise yourself. You are all you’ve got.” ~ Janis Joplin

You can achieve anything you put your mind to.

Last year at this time, I knew I wanted to do a 5K but didn’t think I actually could. It took a major “Ah-ha!” moment for me to start my journey to actually DO a 5K.

And I’m happy to report that on June 7, 2014 (the same day I hit my 15 weeks of NOT smoking), I did my first 5K with my daughter! We conquered the Color Me Rad and had a BLAST!

We were not timed. We were not judged. We just had fun. We completed it in about 60 minutes and hugged at the end…covered head to toe in colored powder.

A truly AMAZING experience!

There are always people that will try to get in your way and rain on your parade…You’re in it for you! I know sometimes that it's easier said than done...DON'T LET THEM GET TO YOU!! Don't let them change YOUR goals! Chances are that they are so full of negativity because they are jealous of you and what you CAN do!

Love yourself and everything else will fall into place.

"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.” ~ Sydney Smith

True statement. If you look away for one second...It seems that everything starts piling up in front of you. Don’t let this happen.

I’ve printed little motivational pictures and placed them around my bathroom. My boyfriend hadn’t been over in a while. He walked in and started giggling. He told me it looked like one of those motivational stores. LOL I told him... “It keeps me going. That’s all that matters.”

Some of you may not have access to printers. That’s ok! Write it out and stick it on the wall. Ask a friend to print it for you. You don’t need 25 pieces of paper covering your wall either. If 1 or 2 works for you...Just do 1 or 2. Have fun with it! And be proud of it! And of course...it doesn’t have to be the bathroom. LOL The kitchen. The hallway. Your desk. Your treadmill. Where ever you’ll see it!

Keep your eye on the prize and you’ll always be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

"Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." ~ Jim Rohn

I both agree and disagree with this. For me...my motivation is my children. And when I start slipping...I have to remember that motivation.

I've been on my journey for a little more than 3 months and I'm still having a hard time with the habit. I think mostly because I keep finding excuses. But...the motivation always kicks back in.

So in my case...My motivation keeps me going. I think it helps that I WANT my habit to be jogging. I truly enjoy it.

Find your motivation and find your habit and you WILL be happy.

“How different our lives are when we really know what is deeply important to us, and keeping that picture in mind, we manage ourselves each day to be and to do what really matters most.” ~ Stephen Covey

Why did you start your journey? Was it for health? Your children? A personal goal to meet? And when you wake in the morning…Do you keep why you started in front of you? Are there pictures on the walls?

Different things motivated us to start our lifestyle change and journey. Different things keep us all going. But we all have one thing in common… To reach goals. Do NOT let anyone tell you that you can’t. Because you CAN!

“Failure is not fatal. Only failure to get back up is.” ~ John C. Maxwell

Apparently, I’ve had a rough month and didn’t even know it. LOL I jumped on the scale yesterday morning and I’m up 11 pounds since 4/23! OUCH! I actually weigh more now that I did when I started my journey 3 months ago.

I don’t feel like a failure though. Not at all. I did a 5K on Saturday morning at the beach. I still haven’t smoked in over 12 weeks. I just need to crack down on my eating habits a bit.

As long as you can figure out what went wrong and do something about it…You’re good! Don’t let the little things get you down. The good thing about tomorrow? It’s a new day. That means you can start fresh.

We can do this!

“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.” ~William James

I started my journey for the final time about 3 months ago. That's when I decided to quit smoking. Once that decision was made...everything else just kind of fell into place.

But...believe me when I say, every day is a new challenge.

There is always something that sneaks up on me. Just the other night I had a craving for a cigarette that would NOT go away! Last week...I injured my calf while jogging. That put a kink in my workouts. Went tonight and did 4 miles...with a lot of pain LOL But most days, I'm able to look at my situation with positivity.

The first time I hit a mile while walking....I cried. LOL The first time I hit 2 miles...I cried. Same for 3 miles. And when I beat my own time for 3 miles. It's such an amazing feeling!

Because I am so new to my journey...I am happy with every little thing that I do. Even if I only do 20 minutes of yoga...I'm still doing something. A simple, slow walk around the block. Still doing something.

Everything that you do is more than the person on the couch is doing.

“Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation leans on the doorbell.” ~Unknown

Opportunity knocked for me about 2 1/2 months ago when I found out that I could get Chantix (to help me stop smoking) for only $10. It was previously $250/month with my old insurance. Opportunity knocked and I answered with open arms.

Now... Every so often... Temptation is trying its darnedest to get me! Today is one of those days. I sat down to do my emails because I wants a cigarette today... BAD! LOL I'm not gonna lie.

But I have a choice. The choice to NOT smoke and continue in my lifestyle change. Or the choice to grab a pack of cigarette and smoke (and yes...I do still have the last pack I opened when I quit).

Tonight my choice is to grab a handful of butterscotch candies, grab my computer and let others know that I'm working through a struggle. And for today, I'm winning.

Keep yourself open to different opportunities. You never know what may come your way. But beware the temptations. They may appear to be a godsend....but will probably end up biting you in the rear.

“What you eat in private will show up in public.” ~Unknown

This is so true.

How many times have you not logged something that you've eaten in the middle of the night? How many times have you told yourself that one extra scoop of ice cream won't make a difference?

I've done it a million times. And the only person that's going to pay the price for it, is me! There is nobody else to hold accountable. And more often than not, I feel guilty. Nobody else knows that I've done it...and I still feel guilty. Why? Because I feel like I'm not only lying to myself, but now I'm lying to everyone else.

I found a few articles tonight. I really want to get into tofu, but didn't know where to start. There are also some great idea for healthy shopping.

“People may doubt what you say, but they will believe what you do.” ~Lewis Cass

I apologize for missing the last two days. Been super busy. My daughter turned 17 yesterday. And we've all been prepping for Easter.

I make it a point to take pictures of my runs. The GPS that's used. My Polar unit. Me sweating LOL Sometimes I don't think people believe that I'm actually accomplishing what I am. I make little collages on my phone and post them to Facebook. LOL I text them to friends and family.

Doing that also makes it a little more real for me too. I can look at my app and say "Wow! I did more than 3 miles tonight!" And I feel even better.

It's not a bad idea to keep records of what you're accomplishing either. No matter how small you think it might be.

Be proud of everything you do. If you want to flaunt it...do it. If you don't want to flaunt...then don't. The only people who truly won't believe you...are the ones that are jealous that you're doing more than them.

I had something completely different in mind for today's motivational. Then I came across this video on the SP site. Many of you have probably already seen it, but it's worth watching again.

It just proves that you can do anything you set your mind to.

"The choice to have a great attitude is something that nobody or no circumstance can take from you" ~ Zig Ziglar

You probably noticed in yesterday's motivation that it was very short and to the point. It probably didn't feel like much heart went into it. Well...You'd be right. I had a tough night last night. I got hurt on my jog. But stress had really been building up before that. I ended up having to cut myself short and only got 1.5 miles in. My goal was 3.2 miles.

When I got home...I was mad, sad, and just plain bummed out. I got a hold of KIMS76 and told her what happened. She broke it down for me. Pretty simple really...I don't always have to take my kids with me (yes...one of them caused the ankle roll LOL). I can have runs that are JUST ABOUT ME!

She was 100% right. And when I got up this morning...All my happy feelings were back. I got up and did a mile in the living room and got my morning started right. My ankle is still a little sore, so tonight I'll be walking and working out in my living room again.

I could've let the ankle be an issue this morning. I could've gotten up angry still and blown off my morning workout. But why? The only person it would hurt ... is ME!

Last night was a temporary setback. If you really want to call it that. I was still jogging. Still walking. Still in the fresh air. Still got a 192 calorie burn. Looking back on it...it wasn't that big of a deal. Lesson learned...Don't follow so close behind your sons Power Wheels. LOL

“Walking: the most ancient exercise and still the best modern exercise.” ~Carrie Latet

Walking gets you out to get fresh air. It helps circulation. It burns calories. There aren't many things that are bad about walking :)

Just remember...even if it's up and down the driveway at a turtle's pace.... you're doing something healthy and good for your body. :)

"Make the decision, then do something - no matter how small - toward accomplishing what you want." ~ Author Unknown

What I want is to complete a 5K. That is my first goal. I have others that come after...but completing a 5K is my first BIG goal.

In May 2013, I told KIMS76 that I really wanted to do the Run For Your Lives 5K & Obstacle Course in September 2014. That gave me more than a year to get ready for it. But I lagged. I didn't start doing anything. Next thing you know, she's telling me that she's already registered for her first 5K. Not long after that....she's completed her first and registered for more.

Today, April 12, 2014, she completed her THIRD 5K!! emoticon

And guess what? I haven't done any! BUT...I am now registered for my first 5K June 7, 2014.

It started with me quitting smoking. I needed something to do with my free time...so I took my son out to start walking. We simply went around the block. The next night, we went around 2. The night after that... 2 again...but I had him put his little car in high gear (power wheels. Maybe 6 miles an hour). I jogged for a minute, then had him drop it back to slow gear so I could catch my breath.

Almost two months later, we take his little car out, and drive around a mapped out 3.3 mile route around my house. He doesn't always go, but I love it when he does. And I don't jog the whole time. But I am able to go a lot farther in between walking.

My point? Set a goal for yourself. Large or small. And take your first step. The only thing stopping you, is you.

My next goal after the 5K? I want to do a 10K. After that...Half Marathon. Maybe a full marathon one day!

I have to reiterate what I've said before... That KIMS76 told me "Your body will do whatever your mind tells it to"

Let's do this!
