I hear you Jma. I don't think they are covered under any insurance plans either. I went because I didn't have insurance anyway, and used my birthday money and Christmas money (they are 12 days of each other, and my mom always gives me money).

Have you ever been to a Naturopath? Do you want to if you haven't?

Guess that's kind of 2 questions isn't it? Yes, I have been to a Naturopath. First time was back in 1983 and then again 2 yrs ago and last time 6 mos ago (before the move to NW).

Good Morning Team! It looks like I am running a day behind or a day ahead depending on how you look at it! LOL Since it is starting to get a little lighter every morning I am off the computer a little earlier to take care of my chickens. Meaning I miss the huddle until later that day or the next morning! emoticon emoticon

I am with you JMAHNKEN! Rinsing the sinuses can stop a whole mess of viruses in it's tracks! That would be my favorite!

Have a GREAT day everyone! I know I will!

Question of the Day

What is your favorite Home Remedy?

I have so many. But I'll choose one for the skin. When we have a cut or burn, we use Colloidal Silver. That stuff is amazing. It actually healed my DH's skin ulcers he had from crohn's disease!!

Mary, on exercising this spring thru summer, you may be surprised. I was a gym member in Arizona. The record in my town was 128o. Although it mainly was a cool 116o ha. Anyway, I dreaded going once it got so hot. But the gym was nice and cool (a lot cooler than the 80o we had to keep our thermostat at home, to keep the electric bill down to $300 a month). Then when I had to go outside I thought it would be really terrible. But, surprisingly, because I was already hot I suppose, the outside didn't feel as hot. Even getting in the car, which was way higher than the 116o, it too wasn't as hot feeling. So, there is hope!

P.S. today is my first day at the gym! and the young lady I babysit for is a personal trainer at said gym! YAY!!! she is going to meet me there in a couple of hours and we are going to work out a plan that's good for my age and abilities! I'm so stoked. mainly because I know it's going to be hot as all get out this spring summer and fall as usual in Alabama and I know my exercising will fall by the wayside.

Prayers and meditation. Also writing down my blessings helps me focus on all of the good in my life. I also talk a walk or exercise in some way and that usually helps too. When I am doing something nice for my body it also has good effects on my feelings of well being!

For me prayers come first and then I work it out. Literally! I go outside and rake the chicken run/ yard work or stay inside and vacuum everything! I works for me! And I really get a lot done! LOL

If I am under the weather feeling tired I take a nap but that hasn't happened for many months! LOL

Question of the Day

How do you calm down when you are stressed? Maybe we can share what we do and help others.

Prayer works best for me. And really helps when others are praying for me as well. That's for big stresses. For little ones, Chocolate.

I do try to weigh in daily on my Wii Fit Plus system as I have a streak going. But sometimes other things in life, like being with family is more important. And I don't get all wrapped up in what the numbers say either. As I know our bodies normally vary any where from a few pounds depending on the time of day. And I know that some times I have on really light clothing and other times really heavy and thick clothing. Plus a lot of times I forget and start to eat before taking it instead of doing it before eating and drinking.

But I agree there are some people out there that just get all bent out of shape when those numbers don't more down or worse go up, so for those people I would agree that they should chill out with the scale. Some people say to measure more then the scale, but there are those that can get bent out of shape with that too. So for those too, I think they should just really spread out doing either. And just concentrate on trying to eat healthier than before and trying to move more than before, those are what I worry about not the scale or the tape measure.

NO! Big mistake for those of you who do! Your body is designed to fluctuate with weight from water. Weighing in everyday can make you bonkers! Weigh in once a week or every two weeks but not everyday! Just my opinion! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Good Morning Team!

Question of the DAY

Do you weigh yourself every day?

Okay, I admit it, I do weigh everyday. I did a search on "experts opinion of weighing everyday" this morning. Appears there a few experts (almost all were current research that came about due to America's Obesity) that have changed their opinion and say weighing everyday is good. So I thought I'd ask YOU what you do.

Cleaning is ok but hate dusting because the minute you dust it comes right back and if it is a windy day then it really builds up. Only wash my clothes and my son does his and he has been doing it since he was 5 and I got fed up with the clean clothes ending right back in the wash. So taught him to wash his own clothes and since that time there has not been any clean clothes rewashed since he has to wash them and fold them too. Both of my children had to do their own clothes when they were young and still do them to this day.

Cleaning is a must, so it is better to enjoy it than to hate it. I enjoy a cleanhouse so I concentrate on the end effect! Never heard of flylady-liked her 15 minute timer rule. I am sure we have all been caught in starting a project in the middle of cleaning (sorting mags, cleaning drawers, etc.)-so easy to do!

I never heard of the flylady or her site before. I don't hate cleaning, but there are parts I don't like. Dusting because it bothers my allergies and can give me a sinus and chest infection really easy if I am not careful. And I also don't like cleaning the bathroom, especially the toilet or around it. Especially since there is a young boy that doesn't like to lift the seat so he ends up peeing on it and gets pee every where a lot of the times. He plays in the dirt a lot and dumps dirt out of his shoes and socks all over the floors all through the house. Doesn't wash himself good so the sink gets dirty water splashed all over the counters, and bowl and floor. And then wipes the dirt off on his hand towel and or bath towel instead of washing it down the sink or shower. So it is a constant struggle to keep the bathroom looking half way decent when he is with us instead of with his mom. I really don't mind doing the dishes, or laundry, or other stuff.

Daddysgirl, you using polish on stainless reminded me of a way to shine your shower glass doors. I dry mine every day and about once a month I use a furniture polish to remove water stains. It also makes the water sheet off instead of lay in drops. Uh oh, I think we are off on cleaning tips haha. Oh well!

Oh, and btw, black sinks are the worst!!!

I know what you mean EJ. I had an avocado kitchen sink for 35 yrs and didn't like it. I was so pleased when my DH remodeled our kitchen. (His last gift to me.) I love my stainless sink and it isn't so hard to shine. It makes me smile each morning!! (Well every time) I go into the kitchen when the dishes are done. ;-) I did have to find some stainless polish to keep it best. FlyLady suggested at one time using a vegetable oil of your choice to keep it shiny, but hand washing dishes takes that shine off quickly. If one just rinses the dishes at the sink before putting them into dish washer then it lasts longer.

My kitchen sink is black and I HATE it. So making it shine is impossible. When my kitchen gets remodeled I will make sure to make sure my sink shines! emoticon

EJ that is it and it didn't use to join to cost for daily reminders. Flylady.net is the basic link. She makes it fun by saying to work on "hot spots" = places you lay papers etc on a counter or desk, having daily routines and other cute phrases! Oh and always make your "sink shine"!! LOL

I don't like dusting but I find it easier when I take a damp microfiber cloth and wipe everything down and then actually do my dusting. My steam mop takes care of the floors I vacuum them first. I don't mind laundry. I don't like folding clothes. I love hanging them on my clothesline!
Bathrooms are not my favorite thing to do, but they have to be done. LOL

Daddysgirl, Never heard of Flylady or her technique. I am old now so don't do ALL deep cleaning in one day. Kind of floors one day, vac another, bathrooms another. Is there a link.

House work: There are parts I enjoy and parts I hate. I do enjoy laundry, I hate dusting and mopping. Not sure why, maybe it is like you said it needs to be done again so quickly. I like to do it in small amounts at a time like FlyLady teaches, so you almost don't realize you are doing it!! Anyone else use FlyLady techniques?

Question of the Day

Do you like housework or hate it? And what do you like and hate about it.

I like housework. Especially when company is coming (and I finally get to the deeper things) because once I've done it I feel so good (for a few days).

I hate dusting. It's such a useless job. Dust comes right back within minutes. Plus during allergy season, it makes me sneeze worse.

Unfortunately his dad pretty much let him get away with what ever until the boy upset the dad enough by misbehaving or by hurting his feet stepping on the kids stuff. Seems both his parents are trying to be his friend and the fun house more than giving him good guidelines to live by. My parents raised me with rules like you all have mentioned, and I try to bring some of that into this relationship, but it is a battle with the boy, dad and mom. But his school just started making him go to counseling and that seems to be slowly but surely helping.

JMAHNKEN when my son was small I told him that he needed to pick his toys up out of the yard and I gave him plenty of time to do it and I told him that if I had to pick it up then it was going into be donated and that he would never have them again. It took one time and him screaming like crazy to get the message that I was not playing, ( it also brought my neighbor too and I think that she would of called the cops because she was mad at me because the people that owned the house said there was a couple and their daughter living in the house and I told them that was not the case, it was two families and they had lied to them so they got kicked out) Did not know that they lied to the owners of the house. I also told my children that if I cleaned the room then things were going it the donation box and that if they wanted to keep their toys then they needed to clean their rooms themselves because if I did it then the toys go to children that did not have any.

Ohhh, that would have been a good one for him to have learned when he was young! His dad just let him leave what ever where ever as the kid was with him every other day and when he wasn't with him he was with his mom. He wanted the boy to feel like he could come back from his mom's and every thing was the way he left it. Until things got so out of hand that his dad couldn't take it or stepped on a toy barefoot. And then the kid would only have so many minutes to pick up what was on the floor in the living room before the dad got mad and just started tossing stuff in to the trash. A couple of times the dad throw away brand new toys that I had just spent my hard earned money to buy that same day or a few days before. And that really upset me! I told his dad that he should give the kid more notice before stuff just gets thrown in the trash. That just a few seconds notice isn't enough for me, let a lone a small boy that was just 4-5 at the time. After that I started making the kid clean up the living room every day before the dad got home, or at least just having out just what he was playing with at the moment, not the whole room littered with toys. But I pretty much just leave his bedroom to him to deal with unless it gets too out of hand, or we have company coming over. He only put a few things in the big box and a lot of it was just trash. So after I went threw it there was only enough to store in a small box to go to charity tomorrow. He has so many toys that he never plays with though. His dad buys him too much at Christmas, and then his birthday was the 19th. He still had Christmas presents that he never bothered to take out of the box and play with. And now he has most of the stuff from his birthday still sitting in the boxes not played with. It happens each yr. There will be stuff he begs for, and then won't even bother to take out of the box and ever use. Or will play with once or maybe 6 times and then it gets tossed into his closet and never sees day light again. So several times a yr I try to get him to donate some of his stuff he isn't playing with, but it is like pulling teeth to get him to give up anything. Even the stuff he has never even bothered to take out of the box or only played with once. I did get him to give up several boxes of old books and some toys just a few months ago though that were in the living room way before Christmas. And the next time he is complaining that he can't find what he is looking for I will try to get him to give up some more stuff for donation.

Love the ideas here since I am just beginning on the Grandma "trip". I love that I get to spend so much time with my DGS now but don't know if that will always be so. Wish I had known EJ's idea of gifting money but going on the shopping trip together when my niece and nephew were younger. It would have been a good idea of something to do together on vacation when there was a big gap with my children for us all to do together.

JMA great idea of giving DSS (Dear Step Son) the box. It reminded me of something DH and I learned when our 4 were young. If something was left in the family living spaces when the kids had gone to bed, it went into the "Saturday box" - just a large cardboard box. It could be purchased (if a school book) or the child could wait until Saturday for it to be returned to them. Sometimes a hard thing if it was a favorite toy. If it ended up in the Saturday box a 2nd time it was donated. Kept a good clean living space and at times it kept unused toys on the move out of the house. Oh, Saturday box things could only be reclaimed after the child had done their weekly house chores. Thankfully I have 4 respectful adult children now!

Hugs to all and thanks so much for all the great ideas!!

Yeah, I think this one has been getting too much bad advice from his friends and from watching TV and movies. And he has too many spoiled friends just like him too. So many of them just think that they should get what ever they want no matter how expensive it is. And they think they should have the rights of adults, they want to watch what ever they want, play what ever computer or other type game they want with out any regards to age appropriateness regarding to violence, language, sexual continent or what ever. And if they don't get their way then they throw fits. I drive him to and from school, or to and from after school sports type activities, or to or from his mom's house when needed. But other wise I usually try to do my errands and shopping when he is not with me. I do try every once in a while to do something with him, but it always ends up with him having a melt down and or being really rude to me. He is throwing one at me right now, as he can't find something in his mess of a room, and wants me to find it for him. But of course he doesn't want to clean his room. lol.

Jma, I agree with you. I was older like 13 or 14 when my Mom couldn't take my mouth any longer. She said until I could be nicer, she wasn't taking me. It worked. Eventually, she gave it a try, and I had learned my lesson. Again though, I was older, but teenage girls can be handfuls.

When I met my boyfriend his son was only four, he just now turned 10. In the beginning I could take him to different dollars stores and really make my money go a long ways with him. I could buy crayons and lots of coloring books, toys and candy cheap and he would be thrilled. I had to try to stir him away from some of the cheaper made toys there or let him know they wouldn't stand up long to his rough treatment. But it was working great. But not too long after, that all he wanted was to go to Toys R Us which is not so cheap to get lots of stuff. His richer friends were telling him to act out to get what he wanted. He had other friends whom's parents had already went through divorce long before and they were telling him to take advantage of it and us it against us all to get what he wanted. And of course he saw nothing wrong in thinking that this was a good idea to get what ever he wanted. And he always wanted lots of stuff that were big ticket items too, and only wanted them from Toys R Us. So it always became a battle trying to get him to understand that he was only going to have so much to spend there. Buying gift cards from there, I thought he would be happy with that, and getting to pick out his own toys. But he wasn't, it was always a battle as he would throw fits wanting more and more item, and bigger price items too. I stopped buying the gift cards for him. I just started picking out the same type of items that he would want on sale cheaper from Walmart or Target while shopping on my own for him or his friends. But I would always price check first online to see whom had the best deal on what I had in mine to get him. I try not to take him shopping with me any more, even to pick up presents for his friend's birthday's as he always throws a fit if he doesn't get something for himself too. I let his parent's deal with taking him shopping for what ever he needs as much as possible. I don't even like to take him grocery shopping with me unless it is necessary. As his parents have let him get away with far too much for far too long. He is in counseling now for other behavior issues, and is getting better behaved, but still needs a lot of improvement for me to want to have to deal with taking him shopping for anything. I don't even bring him with me when I pick out presents for his dad, as he would still demand something for himself or throw fits.

Many of us Grandparents give $ for Christmas, especially teenagers. BUT I love your idea of spending it only when they are with me! ALOT. Thanks for sharing that.

Jan 24

Question of the day.

Loved EJ's post so much, I thought I'd ask "Do you have any special thing you've come up with like EJ at Christmas or birthdays? Maybe you only did it once, but thought it was a good idea after you tried it. Please share. Below I have something that I did only once, but thought it was so clever of me hah
Once my one daughter only wanted money for Christmas. All I could think of was her opening a card with money, then being bored as the other kids, and family opened their gifts, and maybe actually feel cheated and sorry that was all she asked for. So I took $150 one dollar bills, and crunched them up individually, and put into a box and wrapped. She had to unwrinkle each one to count them. It took her the whole gift opening time to do that.

Good Morning Team!

I have a grandson with me so I may not get back today (Saturday) Quality time you know! We are going shopping! For Christmas every year I give all my grand kids $50.00. But the catch is that they have to spend shopping time with me at their convenience. So I don't just hand them the money. My grandson decided this weekend he wanted to come spend time with me and go shopping! This way they get what they want and I get quality time one on one with 1 child. Makes the gift more meaningful this way and they love it. Oh and they get to go out to lunch too!
Have a great day everyone! Love Ya!!

I get lots of cravings for sweets, or salty or combo. So my favorite snack for both of those is trail mix with lots of different nuts, seeds, and dried fruits. If it's just sweets I am wanting than I got for yogurt covered raisins. If it is just salty that I want than I like low calorie and low sodium rice cakes or pop corn. I have to be careful not to eat too much of any of those too. I also love peanut butter and eat it a lot just by it's self.

My favorite not so healthy stuff is some type of chocolate, like candy bars, M&M's, Toosie Rolls, Oreo cookies, again for the sweet craves. And for the salty craves potato chips or tortilla chips. And for combo is Cracker Jack's, or Fiddle Faddle, or type caramel and popcorn type treats.

Good Morning Team!

My favorite Healthy Snack is Frozen blueberries with coconut milk poured on them and stirred in.

My favorite not so healthy snack is anything salted. Because I am hypothyroid it pulls on my adrenals which makes me crave salty stuff!

Question today...

What's your favorite HEALTHY snack and what's your favorite NON HEALTHY SNACK?

I would love to hear what some of you like for healthy snacking to give me ideas. I am in a rut. My answer is NUTS. However, I eat too many of them to lose much weight, and sometimes I gain. Still they are healthier than my favorite non healthy snack nuts with chocolate on them....M&M peanuts!!

okay my answer to Jan 21st question is pretty much the same as the day before's Q & A: Computer time with SP, MFP and Friends and family on Facebook, and playing Farmville2 on FB. But add in walking the dogs, reading, playing with the dogs and or the boy, sleeping, etc

Carole, my mom buys "cheese food", (mostly oil and starch) and tries to give to me when she finds out she doesn't like. At 93 she can't remember she hates it. I threw a slice to the dog once (bad I know) and HE wouldn't even eat it.

I will have to agree with all of the above but I think soda, in general, is one that is really bad. Not that I don't have one once in awhile.

Interesting answers to yesterday's questions uh?

Today is Jan 22nd

Question of the Day.....

What is the Worst food product?

Boy, this should keep us busy all day uh? I choose Aspartame. We thought I had restless leg syndrome. Was prescribed pills for it. Decided NOT to take and began researching about 4 yrs ago. Stopped aspartame, and the symptoms went away. I was a 6 pack a dayer of diet coke.

I have had a lot of free time this past year-sadly to say I did not do all the things I thought I would do if I had free time. I have 45 days left til we get back to AZ so we want to take advantage and cram it all together-going to visit my brother in GA this weekend and going to DC to see all the landmarks in about 2 weeks. Would like to go to the creation museum, but not sure I can fit it in!
