2nd Day...after doing a 3 mile "marching DVD" and still being far from goal, walked the dog in the dark, then resorted to basic body shaking to meet 10K goal. I will take it! Good Night, Victory. Saturday is a new day!

@fiestymama!!! Your story made me giggle! My little one chases me around when I'm doing laps in the house, too. It's SOOOOOO FUN!! And she makes a big scene of being exhausted when we're through. It's really wonderful stuff (it's hard to get your kids to move sometimes!)

At home I have an elliptical and a treadmill for that, but its not always easy for me to escape the office to walk so I bought a mini stepper for the office. I spend 1-2 minutes stepping every half hour or hour, whatever my schedule allows. I also make a point to walk around the conference room table a few times each time I go in there for coffee or to heat up lunch. And I walk to whoever's desk I need to speak with as opposed to sending an inner office chat or email. It's not much, but it all helps.

I do laps around the inside of where I work and insde my house as well. When my treadmill is working I will sometimes use it. I have found that treadmill hurts my knees.

800 more steps for me. I'll get them in while watching Castle, playing trivia on Viggle on my phone and finishing up my computer stuff.

I did get my walk in today outside, but I didn't get my 20,000steps in. So I also walked inside but I did circles in the living room. I was pretty glad I only had 900 steps to do because I would of gotten to dizzy. Otherwise I walk on the treadmill when its nasty outside which is everyother day. But, yes, I push for 20,000 steps and at the least 20 flights of steps.

I also do the indoor lap around the house. I am not sure what mine would look like, but I do the livingroom, kitchen, up the stairs into both bedrooms and bathroom. I can't wait until spring or the time change to get here so I can be outside in the evening longer.

I did laps in my house a week ago when it was raining outside. My "laps" looked like a stick figure person. The loop in the living room made the head and we have 4 bedrooms coming off of the hallway that made up the arms and legs. I was doing this by myself and then my 5 year old started following me. After following me for several "laps", he wanted to lead so I was following him.

That boy can MOVE! We were both cracking up as we speed walked from one room to another. We did it until we were exhausted and I got my steps in for the day. I have fond memories of that evening and fully intend to do it again.

So glad someone mentioned this. My Fitbit One goal is 20,000 steps a day, 15,000 minimum. I can get this without ever going outside, which is very convenient for those days when the weather is miserable. I have a very small house, so I can't do a real loop around it, but what I do is walk into one room to the farthest point, then turn and walk out. Then into the next, and so on. From an aerial view, My path would look like a capital "K", with one extra leg. I play music on the stereo, or my Itunes on my computer. I do it in bits. Every hour I get up and do laps. Works like a charm.

I got in several thousand steps while doing laundry last week. I have 3 kids and everyone had a full basket plus I was doing bedding so it was a bit of a laundry marathon day, but...
I had my laundry pile about 3 steps away from the area in which I was folding. I made a point of taking steps back and forth between the pile and the folded rather than leaning and twisting. Between that, and the trips to the laundry room, I racked up close to 8,000 steps in one day ----- inside.

It can be done.

I also walk a circuit around the house, turn on some techno and it really gets me going! I pace on the phone, too. I use a stability ball at the computer and do some walking, skiing and dancing motions, and actually get a good lower body workout from that, especially when I wave my arms around and engage my core. I find that when walking in place it has to be fairly deliberate. It still isn't quite as nice as getting out of the house, though. Looking forward to some trail running this year.

Actually it was Fitbit.com that suggested wearing it on a sock when walking in place because of the difference in motion.

WIO has been counting my steps fairly accurately based on comparison with Striiv which I have also used and my husband counting my steps x 1 minute.

I walked over 3 hours straight plus worked 12 hours on my feet to get that 40,000.

Blessed Be!

12NIMUE- Fitbit should not be worn on sock! If on torso isn't tracking steps you should contact support. Where are you get your 40,000 step count from, though.. maybe that's the number that's off! I'm an active runner and haven't come close to that..though I didn't have Fitty when I ran marathons... but that's what it would take!!

I'm like many of you--I step in place while doing dishes, laundry, etc. (can't cook and step in place--I'm not coordinated enough!). I also walk around the house, up the steps, around the upstairs level, back down and repeat. If possible, I go to our local university and walk in their gym. They have track so can walk there when the weather is bad.

My One hasn't arrived yet. Great reading the tips. I, too, walk with Leslie. I also have a rock n roll from Tony Little. -Sideways steps, kind of, but feels like climbing stairs.

I dance and walk in place while doing dishes or cooking, even food prep if it's safe (no knife)

I do my treadmill, Walk it Out and Leslie Sansone. I usually put my fitbit in my pocket. I find the One to be more accurate than the Ultra. Remember, Walk it Out is way too high with steps.

I blast mu workout music and walk around the house and up/down stairs in 10 - 15 min increments. Those online walking videos sound good, I will check them out.

I see a lot of people mention walking in place. I use Wii's Walk It Out. I have yet to find a place to wear my fitbit that counts those steps somewhat accurately. I've tried my sock and it is still counting about 1/2 of my steps. When I walked 40,000 yesterday, it counted 21,000.

Where are you wearing yours for walking in place?

Blessed Be!

I wish I had won the treadmill desk they did one time on here---cool idea---but great idea to get up and do things on commercials and putting one thing away at a time. I often make extra trips just to add steps on mine, too---isn't it funny how this little thing motivates us to move more.

I rarely sit. I have my computer set up on the desk in such a way that I can walk in place while I type, read, browse, etc. I also walk back and forth when I read, We have 2 levels with a bathroom on each level, so when I have to use the bathroom, I go to the one that's farthest away. When I wash dishes, I walk in place. When I put laundry away, I put 1 piece away at a time and that all adds up. I consistently get around 20,000 steps a day and most of it is from inside. I also use DVD's for exercise.

forgot to mention, I also walk back and forth when I'm talking on the phone.

Hmmm, that's interesting (and a little alarming as a potential One purchaser) that the One wasn't tracking the mini-trampoline. I have an Ultra I wear on my bra, usually, and it seems ultra good at picking up mini-tramp activity!
Don't they use the same way of computing/calculating activity?

I walk in place, jog in place, walk a loop around the inside of my home, up/down the stairs etc every day to get my steps in. This week I have been setting my gym boss timer for 3 min on and 1 min off and jogging in place or around the livingroom & diningroom for something different.

I'm in the storm (South east corner of NH, 30 miles due north of Boston, one mile from MA border) and I love my treadmill, at least while we have power and not blizzard strength winds. It is not fun to be on it when the power shuts off!

Thanks for the the tip about Amazon Prime and the walking DVD's!

As for the treadmill.. gee it's easier on the joints than running outside! Running in general is really ok for the joints..the motion is good at keeping them lubricated.. yes "use it or lose it". Although I try to avoid hard surfaces like concrete! My sister is NOT a runner and the only family member to have a knee replacement.. from pilates class and using a hula hoop..tore her meniscus.

Yep the weather channel still does cover storms but I also don't like there new format, but times change and they had to also

Before you get a treadmill or anytime type of equipment for the house, get clearance from a doctor. For a lot of people treadmills cause more issues for the hips and knees than any other piece of gym equipment out there So many orthopedists would love to see them banned, but thanks to trreadmills, they get folks who need knee surgery /replacement that normally would not have.

It is one of those things, better to have a doctors approval now than his disapproval as you are sitting in this office with issues from it.

Everybody tells me that they would love to knit, but they don't have time. I look at people's lives and I can see opportunity and time for knitting all over the place. The time spent riding the bus each day? That's a pair of socks over a month. Waiting in line? Mittens. Watching TV? Buckets of wasted time that could be an exquisite lace shawl. ~Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, At Knit's End: Meditations for Women Who Knit Too Much

Ok, now that I have clued in on the storm. Suggest a Tabatha workout. Do the intensity (hard jog in place, squat thrusts, etc.) while Jim Cantore is doing a segment, then revert to a walk in place when his segment ends. I am assuming the Weather Channel still covers storms, I hate their "new" format of showing documentaries.

I usually have the Weather Channel on in the morning while I read the paper. This looks like this could be a bad storm. Everyone up there, please take care.

Where I am it's 78 and sunny. Sorry about that.

I'm in North Carolina (and not paying attention to the news I guess!).

That sounds like another unfortunate weather event for those folks in NJ, NY, etc. Let's hope it doesn't disrupt too many lives.

Not sure where you are Paul, but heard now that the Gov of MA has set a state of emergency at 4 pm today asking everyone, but none emergency vehicles off the road. Also same is going for CT, NJ, and NY. Keeping in touch with friends and family there now and most have settled back at home until Monday

I'm gathering that you don't have access to a gym? Steps count on elipticals and treadmills. They even count on stationary bikes, if you put the fitbit on the hem of your pants or shorts. On bikes the fitbit counts one step for every complete revolution.

If its a bad storm, this won't be an option. But I will stop at the mall or Wal-mart on the way home from work and just walk about. No need to risk your safety, but for me its an option to get some steps in when its cold or dark.

download some walking dvds there are several on line, including if you use netflix or amazon prime.

turn on the tv and just walk in place or walk about the inside of your house in 10 minute increments I love to dance around with the music blasting

Be as creative as your need to be to get those steps in

I'm on the east coast and currently in the midst of a winter storm, so I can't venture outside! My step count really suffers when I'm stuck indoors. Do any of you have good tips for getting in more steps at home? All I can think of is running/marching in place or going up and down the stairs a lot. What do you do?
