Not been a good week for me in steps---but I keep trying---was home way too much this week which limited my steps---plan on getting out today and doing some shopping to increase my total---we had snow and I tend to hibernate when that happens. I like that idea of using notes about fitness activities. And I do put in my water aerobics here on Spark as I can't wear the fitbit there.

What an excellent idea to track your actual cardio activities in the note section!
You might also take a look at the Food Plan section on your FB Dashboard. I find that it is an excellent way to keep track on a daily basis of your calories in/out throughout the day.

At first I was a little put off by the sync between fitbit and spark on the total minutes, then I started to use the fitness notes at the bottom of the spark fitness tracker page. There I put how long and what I do, like treadmill 30 min and elliptical 20 min. you can view a report that shows you each entry and even a date range. I can get the "exercise" in each day, but I now like that I can see the big picture and days where I have been more active over all. When I first re-started my weightloss journey last March, I was tracking on WW, fitness pal and spark. wow it was over kill, but I do believe that it helped me to stay focused and understand what "my numbers" were. I haven't finished my goal yet, and with the fit bit (new since Christmas) I am now able to trust in what I am doing. I put my food tracking into spark and sync the fitness from fitbit and the weekly reports have been consistent with my effort vs weight loss.

I do think that FitBit tends to over do it on how active I am - which is a tad sad since I am pretty sedentary according to the other data! Like the sleep measure so for now am keeping it connected for now.

SWEETS - that IS ambitous to take the stairs. emoticon I tried that today and my knees hurt! I've found that I can add 1000 steps for about every 10 minutes of walking. It takes me 10 minutes to walk to the end of my street and back. I initially started with 1 "lap" and am now I sometimes go up to 3 laps. Lately I've been trying to exercise while I watch a taped movie. If the movie is good - I can't wait to get back the next day to watch the next 30 minutes. Well, congrats on your weight loss so far and emoticon emoticon

since i am fairly sedentary i count all my steps from fit bit. i have been taking the stairs down from seventh floor which is ambitious for me. i should make myself walk until i have my goal steps for the day of 7000 which for me is active.

Moonstream, the "exercise" minutes that Spark is pulling from fitbit are your fitbit "fairly active" and "very active" minutes. Th calorei burn is from those minutes, though I believe it includes your bmr calories you would burn anyway and that Spark is already counting). My workaround has just been the subtract a week of bmr for those minutes from my total and set that as my calorei burn goal. In my case my bmr is a little less than one calorie per minute. So if I was credited for 200 minutes, I would want it to be 200 calories less. I don't mess with the daily numbers though since I think Spark will just change them next time it syncs with fitbit (maybe you can alter the previous day?)

I only change it in my weekly calorie burn goal since that is the only thing that effects our Spark allowance. So one typical week, I looked at the total exercise minutes and calories for the week. I subtracted the minutes (plus a little extra to make it an easier number to remember) from the total and set that as my goal. Then I just ignore the "burning too many calories" message as it wasn't really designed for us. The other option is to enter your planned exercise calorie burn for the week into that goal and just ignore the option. The main reason I chose not to do it that way is that I want my Spark range to reflect my activity--both intentional exercise and other activity. I havehad better success following my fitbit allowance than when I followed my Spark allowance. Now my spark range and my fitbit allowance are usually similar (on a less active day my fitbit allowance is at the bottom of my spark allowance, on a very active day it is slightly above or at the top. Now I just need to work on being more consistent with my food logging again!

Moonstream, I wouldn't remove any of the steps Fitbit gives you even though it is outside your definition of "activity time" spent during the day. If you notice in the morning when you first grab your Fitbit it already has given you credit for calories burned. That is because our bodies do that for us. We burn x-amount of calories by just sleeping during the night and breathing during the day. So I would just leave your data as is and enjoy the ride.

QUESTION: I am tracking my fitness minutes but only count when I actually do exercise like take a fitness class, walk around my neighborhood, get on the elliptical, etc. FITBIT enters in my steps/minutes as fitness minutes so I've been deleting those. I did play around with going into fitbit and changing the activity but that doesn't solve the problem of just walking around my house minutes counting as "fitness minutes" which I don't think they should. What are your thoughts on this??? Do you count all your steps as "fitness minutes"

I did wear my Fitbit to the wedding on my bra strap---so I did get some steps to count but did not do as much as usual---and today I have been recuperating from it---hoping to do better tomorrow.

I notice when fb syncs to sp it brings across more than just the 'very active;' minutes. Is there a way to get only the very active minutes to sync. Seems like we are taking credit for activity that is not really exercise for some of us.

OK, so you do want to put your weight in kilos? If that is the case then go to the START page on SP and click on the ACCOUNT/EMAIL PREFERENCES link on the upper left hand side and in the MY INFORMATION section in the first tab click on the box that reads USE METRIC SYSTEM. Hopefully this should fix your weight recording issue.

I'm wondering if that's the problem. On FB I put my height in feet and inches but my weight in kilos. Maybe FB is reading my kilos on SP as pounds and putting that into kilos. But the maths still doesn't seem to work out...

when I weigh in on SP, fitbit goes mad and puts my weight at something like 27 kilos. It does this every time and I have to correct it on fitbit. Support said reset fitbit (for lots of problems, including that one) and it solved the other problems but not the weight.

I set up an account on Fitbit then linked that with SparkPeople. I am syncing through my phone. In the beginning my Fitbit account and SparkPeople was receiving the information but neither is receiving it now. I am going to try emailing them again. It's only been a week but I am getting very frustrated and ready to return or stop using the Fitbit.

UPDATE: I think I have the problem solved. I had to set up my Fitbit One like I did when it was new. I had to be careful that I was using the correct account. It showed the steps for the last phone sync on my Fitbit page and my device is once again showing as connected to SparkPeople. Now I only have to try to get Fitbit Support to tell me how to record the missing steps on the Fitbit site.

Hmmm.....that is really weird that they are not responding. Their service for me has been amazing!!

Did you link through Fitbit or Sparkpeople?

Is your Fitbit account obtaining the correct information from your fitbit?

Oh, and are you only going through your phone?

I do everything through the Fitbit site

My Fitbit One is not syncing with my SP account. I checked my Fitbit profile page and access is authorized but on the SP Fitbit page it shows that my accounts are conneccted and sync is authorized but there is no device showing. I had an issue when my phone was not working and it was reset by Apple and when I tried setting up my Fitbit again it created a new account. I've written Fitbit a week an a half ago to have the second account deleted but have not heard from them. Anyone have suggestions on what I can do? This is frustrating me and making me sorry I purchased the Fitbit. Thanks in advance for any replies on what I can do to get back on track. I really enjoyed having the Fitbit track my exercise for me.

I just noticed that some of my info had not sync'd over from FB prior to the 8th of this month. Not sure if my battery had died or what. I usually see a place to sync to FB on my tracker but for time period of Jan 1-7 it does not show. Any tips on what to do about this?
I guess I can manually add my steps but of course this does not change my fitness minutes.

@ GRANDMAJO09:

If you are talking about the Flex it is not water-proof, rather it is water-resistant. It will be available in Spring 2013. The One is also water-resistant.

DIANALACAT59: I usually get around 14,000 but I wait tables 6 days per week at our cafe so I easily get 10,000 by 2 pm in the afternoon. Like LECATES said, if 5000 is good for you, way to go and keep trying to add a few more every day. Look for ways to add a few steps like parking farther from the store, etc.

Just found out today that FitBit will grab my weigh-in info from SP automatically. I went to post a weight on FitBit and found it already had my weigh-in from this morning that I did here!

FORDIE7: SP's required 660 calorie burn is just form exercise only. FitBit's is both actual exercise and what it sees as exercise (walking around but a a slightly fast rate). For example, today I only did 62 min/about 600 calories of actual exercise (52 min walking/jogging outside and then 10 min on the elliptical just to get my daily steps over 20,000!) but FitBit says I did 168 minutes today/1322 calories. I know the extra is just from walking at work.

Busy day today, DD and I went to college (schedules match to ride together), then stopped to get lunch (hot sour soup and garlic chicken), then took DH to VA Dr for antibiotics (bronchitis). Good thing I didn't work today. Walked 5000+ steps today and counting.

Thankful that we just had fog and not frozen stuff.

Wow have just hit the 500 klm mark. Not bad for 3 m onths. I am impressed.

I don't know if your Zip has a reset feature but you may want to reset the device.
If that does not fix your sync issue you may want to contact Customer Service for FB and see if they can either help you fix this issue or replace your current Zip.

I'm having trouble getting my Fitbit Zip to sync with my computer or my husband's I-pad but still writing down my steps, mileage and calories burned each night before going to bed. Today I was able to get over 15,000 steps. I'm really enjoying my fitbit, just frustrated with the sync problem.

Thanks for the correction! I thought it was waterproof and probably misread it. I definitely do not want to incorrect information, so I appreciate the correction.

Thanks for the info. Are you saying I should eat less each day based on the physical activity I do?

Rockman6797 - thanks so much that was what I was thinking but when I saw 130 steps this morning I was a bit surprised! My husband often tells me I am a restless sleeper - I guess this confirms it! emoticon

Again Thanks a bunch!!
