Good thing like others have mentioned, it does count inclines when you are outside as steps. Others have experienced this when hiking and there were no steps around.

Figured out that if I am carrying laundry upstairs and my FB is on my left side it will not count the steps but it will if on my right side due to me keeping my hand on the railing more as I go up.

Everybody tells me that they would love to knit, but they don't have time. I look at people's lives and I can see opportunity and time for knitting all over the place. The time spent riding the bus each day? That's a pair of socks over a month. Waiting in line? Mittens. Watching TV? Buckets of wasted time that could be an exquisite lace shawl. ~Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, At Knit's End: Meditations for Women Who Knit Too Much

10 feet is probably accurate because 10 feet is considered a flight. My house is only only one floor and except for apartment buildings, only two other places even have more than one floor, so there is not much activity on the step aspect of our fitbits but I believe it counts actual flights not actual steps so until you are doing a flight (about 10 steps, it isn't going to count.)

New low reached 149.2 lbs on 5/6/11. Made my weight watcher goal on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.
New walk record 9/9/11, 4 miles in 58 minutes.

same here. It would be nice if it was more consistent

for me at times with my knee I have to take perhaps one or two steps one at a time and then the whole thing does not count.

It missed another one this morning! It's very obvious when you've only done one (down two and up one) and it doesn't show!

Wow, I had no idea a small pause would make it not count a flight..thanks for that info! 30 minutes ago I went up and down 2 flights...but only one counted. I had phone in hand and may have been walking slowly .. but for it not to count..weird, but apparently true. I will try to fly up those stairs!
I never would have noticed that until we got the new dashboard that shows the timing of the flights.
And yes, Kudos to Jean, you are a great role model!!

Jean - kudos to you for being so active! Some people I know, as they "mature", become LESS active and healthy. Good luck reaching your goal weight. My original goal was 124 and I reached it but 120 just seems like shooting for the moon these days - some stubborn pounds.

Thanks to everyone who suggested stopping while climbing could mess with the Fitbit step counting. As I mentioned previously it's not steps I climb but hills. Today I managed 25 flights, whereas on a typical day I manage 4-8...I am now realizing I was running late a few times today and the speed of my walking was increased. I am always with my kids when I am out and about so I have to stop this hand this one a snack or tie that one's shoe...that would make sense for ME at least that on the days I stop I only get the 4-8 but today I was go, go, going and I managed 25...very interesting, thank you!

USMA - sorry you're having a problem with it - hope it gets sorted out soon!

I have found the time I carried my laptop upstairs it did not count. almost like the laptop was blocking FB's internal radar. I know about stopping on the step but this is crazy. It just has a mind of it's own

Yes, I learned the hard way not to stop as I climbed.
I habitually toss things [fabric, yarn, projects] on the stairs to take up with me later, but if I pause mid-way up to grab something, zilch. Ar-g-g-g-g-h-h-h-h

Also make sure you don't stop as you climb. I occasionally will pause on a landing for some reason, and it will not count it as a flight.

That said, it does seem as though there are days when everyone seems to have flight problems - maybe it has something to do with the moon..... emoticon

Wow! I am stumped then.
Did you walk around before climbing the stairs when it registered?
Was your heart rate already up before you climbed the stairs on the days it did register?
I have wondered if my heart rate has anything to do with the height of the stairs, too, but have not figured that out either.

Climbing stairs seems to make a difference in my weight plateau, as it pushes my weight down when my food intake is "normal" for me. Salt does affect me every time, but portion control with lots of climbing makes the weight melt off.

I like that a bunch!

Jean, these are the same steps I take everyday and some days it works some it does not. Their are 25 steps in total of standard base to base height for inside homes. When I sent upstairs just before writing this, it measured as a flight of steps.

Our goals are close, and so is our current weight. I am not a young Mom, but a "mature" great grandma at 75 years old. [Birthday this August reaches 76.] I love my Fitbit and have seen the way it encourages, prods, and keeps me active.

That's my only complaint with the Fitbit! Today I did zero steps and I have apparently climbed 16 flights already! LOL I live in a very hilly neighborhood, BUT I took my usual route this AM and it usually registers 2-4 flights so not sure how I managed 16, lol.

Yes! Apparently the steps are not high enough from the base floor to the top of the flight. They have to have a certain elevation bottom to top for the flight of stairs to count. I heard somewhere that it needs to be ten feet, not sure that is accurate.

At school the exterior flight of stairs is 24 risers, but only counts as one flight. At home I have 15 risers and that counts as one flight. So I have to climb many more steps at school to get the same one floor count. The interior flights of stairs at school are less risers to reach the same second floor. The algorithm in the Fitbit goes by the height between floors, not the number of steps.

Wed I went up the steps 7 times, yet it only registered 2

Yesterday I went up 5 times, registered ZERO

this morning I went up one time registered ZERO

Does this dislike the steps in my house? LOL
