Food swap! Not a super-productive month, but I got some *great* apple butter and some baked goodies. And corned beef soup that made the husbeast happy.

Monday, I got two bushels of Goldrush apples, a scant peck of green beans to pickle, and about a peck each of acorn, butternut, and carnival squash. Veggies in the winter are my biggest struggle with eating locally, 'cause I don't like canned veggies and don't have a big freezer. I'm hoping to get by on winter squash, some pickled beans, some as-local-as-my-counter sprouts, and non-local spinach (I just can't go a whole week without spinach - I'm spoiled). Until we get a heavy snowcover, I still have collards producing, and still have high hopes that THIS year I'll get brussels sprouts from those plants (right now the sprouts are about the size of peas!) And of course I have starchy root vegetables in storage (carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, you get the idea...)

I'll be curious to hear what you do with your fennel - I love fennel seed, but I'm not a big fan of the fennel bulbs and I have a couple I need to use up. turnips I love in soup or just roasted like "fries".

This is the antithesis of local, I think. I drove a thousand miles from massachusetts to illinois to help my husband move his stuff back at the end of his sabbatical. He had gotten me some Thai eggplant at the Urbana farmers market (I can't buy them here in western Mass) but I left his apartment forgetting them in the fridge. So not only did I transport them 1000 miles from the Urbana market to my home, I turned around 45 miles out of town and drove back to pick them up! I think I need to buy carbon offsets for those eggplants, but it made for some really delicious green curry...

Yummy tomatoes. They grow them out of their house (they have a few acres). And they are great! Heirlooms, different varities. They finish up in Nov :) Great now! vvvvvvvvvv

Had my food swap tonight--always a blast. Highlight was water kefir grains. I've been coveting kefir grains for years, and am totally excited!

(And these are in fact local; the friend I got them from at the swap got her starters from a lady in town who's kept this culture going for over 30 years. Yipe. I am to be Very Good to them...)

The tomatoes are finally done! I made jelly to celebrate. (entirely non-local, though; commercial juice, sugar, and pectin. But it's cider season; I see some boiled cider in my future...)

(well, and also made pizza, with the not-enough-to-can bits of miscellaneous tomato products, and something that was probably local cheese but had long lost its label. Yum!)

Winter squash winter squash winter SQUAAAAAASH!

Yes, it will be less exciting in six months, when it's still in the market, but after a summer of those wimpy seedy things, a real solid squash (and pumpkin) is so thrilling. Stuffed squash for dinner tomorrow...

Salsa done, with added bonus strawberry-raspberry sauce. I still have tomatoes, but I've run out of peppers! Fortunately, I pick up my farmshare tomorrow, and guess what the required item is... (it's a one-required, pick the rest of the share on your own from the stand type of share. I highly recommend this style if you're a small household; lots of veggies, but unlikely to be lots that no one in the house will eat.) WIN!

Everyone was talking about the late season raspberries, now I know why!! They are delicious. The ones at the supermarket were selling for 3.99 a pint...local PYO 1.50lb. What a great day! I froze 1 lb and then made raspberry jam also picked peaches and grapes. I'll miss summer.

Our weekend meals consisted of veggies entirely from our garden. yummy roasted beets, carrots and potatoes. In addition I made broccoli soup and lavendar peach jam, and 2 kinds of bread and butter pickles. The neighbor donated peppers from his garden! Putting up tomato sauce today. Zuchinni pie for dinner. The harvest is getting ahead of me!!!

I missed the farmer's market this week, and then found the two summer squash from my farmshare had already gone soft, so they're in the compost - bummer. But I'll get my next share tomorrow. It's like Christmas, opening the box to see what I've gotten! Lotsa Greek salad from last week's cucumbers. Mmm...

Yesterday, neighbors gave me several branches from their red current bush. I have spend the the last couple hours pulling off the red balls. I had planned to freeze all of them, but, although the fruit is rather tart, the flavor is so good that I have eaten near as many as as left to freeze
