My doctors don't believe in it either. They say if you eat right, lots of veggies and fruits, you will not need supplements. AND some supplements add herbs that are not good for your kidneys. I discovered this by taking the supplements to my doctor's office and they read the label and explained this to me.

I've never taken supplements. My nephro said she didn't believe in taking any - regardless of kidney disease - unless blood tests prove the nutrient is out of normal range. Mine are all normal.

However, I have osteoporosis which - like everything else it seems - needs therapy that is in conflict with CKD treatment. Kill my kidneys or break my bones from sneezing. Lovely choices.

It is vital that each time any medical person says you should do anything, take something, or have any procedure that you say LOUDLY "I have kidney disease; how involved with my kidneys be in this therapy?" at least 3 times and until you see them really think about the kidney impact. The 1st few times, they usually do a "yeah yeah" and blow past the caution.

That was the old Nephrologist. He did not tell me what the numbers mean on my lab results and did not remember that I was originally there for Primary Aldosteronism. So I am changing to another Neph Dr. and have not seen him yet. It will be August 20.
I have to be especially careful of what I eat with PA and low kidney function.

good for you, I get these notifications all the time and will continue to pass them on. I am very cautious about anything I take now. I thought you were still waiting on your visit with the nephrologist. What did he/she say if you don't mind me asking

I just received information from the AMA website which I belong to as a nurse practioner; it was a long article about how dangerous it is to use diet supplements if you might have or be in danger of developing kidney disease. It included anything from Ginseng to vitamin preparations. I myself wont take anything but the renal gelcaps prescribed by my doctor and the Vitamin D ordered by him. With kidney problems your kidneys can't process Vitamin D so it usually ends up low as does iron. Anyway, if you know you have kidney disease don't take any supplements without checking with your nephrologist. I'm not sure your regular doctor would be as aware of the dangers.
