Well they did the procedure and now their wondering if its an impacted sinus as I'm not able to swallow again and she did not see a thing wrong but she had to stretch it again and did biopsies but they won't know anything for 7 days, but they said go home eat soft foods and I did an my mouth swelled up and I can't swallow again, so I'm not able to get any food down and jello was bad so I'm not able to eat, so tried to call my ear nose and throat guy last night but they had gone home, whatever pressure is in my head has me not able to clear my throat, I tried saltwater thats all I have here it wont' clear it so I keep trying to clear it and it wont' clear, so I got to wait till 8 till he comes in and hope if he can't see me he would at least call something in for me.

Had I known it was sinus and not esophageal like they thought I would have gone for help sooner but they thought it was a dismotility spasms and it is but it can be sinus related too, what a mess, huh?

My doc called their doing a down the throat scope tomorrow, I'm having chest pain and when I Pull in air its hurting, so this might not be fun, but because it even hurts when I try to eat jello my whole face swells up and my throat hurts, they said it can't be put off as Im not eating, I"m losing weight but the hard way, I don't think she knows what it is as I don't I just don't want to eat a thing as it hurts and it hurts now when I take in air, I wonder if your mom and I had the same thing?

I'm just a wee bit worried when they fill you up with that gas or air whats it going to do to my lungs? They already hurt, might be a tough day, thanks for the info, have a good night, and I hope they find out what this is its painful!

ERG! I had 3 paragraphs written and my phone blew the window away so I have to start over. This just goes along with what I was writing anyway! For some reason, I stopped getting SP emails some weeks ago. I was busy enough I didn't notice. Plus, sometimes thread go dormant for awhile. Under Email Settings, I've gone through all the people's blogs that got marked unsubscribed (WHY??) and re-subscribed. That was most of the folks I follow. I'm now going through all the message threads marked inactive to do the same. I can't believe how much I've missed! I've checked all my team settings and they appear to be right. I changed a few to force SP to look at that page again, so we'll see. Any other ideas welcome!

Anyway: Mom had esophagus problems, too (in addition to a hiatal hernia - a hole in your diaphragm that parts of your stomach can balloon through). Her little flap thingy that closes of either breathing or eating didn't fit tight and that's what caused the acid to leak into her esophagus. They tightened that up for her, BUT that meant she couldn't vomit without permanently damaging that fix.

Perhaps something like this is in your future, Dakota.

Hi Jean! I was wondering where people are, hope I did not scare them all away. My primary doc is a doctor of intenral medicine and my gastro doc is a gastro and I have a kidney doc and a neurolgist too, Gastro docs usually make you take more meds, of which I think Im on enough, but not sure what they do, other than urgent care nurse said surgery, and surgery on my esophagus does not sound like fun to me.Thank you ! I hope the outcome is good, just not sure what she's doing to try to do.

Hi Ellen, I am curious if you see a DO or an MD doctor. It makes a HUGE difference in your care. An MD wants to take care of things with pills mostly and an Do wants to take care of the entire body as a whole.

I wish you the best!

I am sorry I have been MIA team - Last week was a crazy week for me!
Dad was in the hospital, I was still recovering from being sick, untop of school I had job testing.

This week is no better.
I hope everyone is loving their kidneys!
Continue to take care of you!

I had to call urgent care, the acute care nurse looked up my report said I can't come to urgent care they can't help me I would have to go to the main hospital and they would have to call my doc, she said I have something where your hiatal hernia slides up and lays or something on the esopahgus and cuts out your ability to eat solids and it may be you can't get liquids down eiither and its an er run by ambulance if you can't get someone to go with you, its called esophageal dismobility or something like that, the bad thing is I just took a pill and it felt like the pill go stuck and is burning, so this is going to be a tough weekend, she said it usually requires surgery but I got so much scar tissue from acid that that might not be an option.

Doctor never called back never called in any medication so I have nothing to take all weekend, finding a new gastro next week, can't handle this garbage anymore, they do this to me every time and leave me without meds and lose charts and can't find reports and I could do their job better than them, so now I got to call the answer service and tell them I got no meds and then the docs get mad at me and its their fault, am going hunting in the yellow pages for a new doc hopefully not assoicated with either hospital, an independent one I hope. Gonna be a rough weekend, but its been like this since the 4th of the month.

I don't know what an Egd is but I had a down the throat into the esopagus scope done a year ago in march, and I'm sorry you have barretts, they told me I might get it one day as my reflux is not in control, but this acid reflux plays havoc on our lives, I hate it, no one understands either unless they have it or choke too. I never get heartburn never, I get the choky spells and I'm still waiting for the docs office to call me. They probably wont' till next tuesday but I have no acid reflux pills to take so this is going to be another bad weekend, the aciphex does not work anymore they gave me dexilant and it caused a reaction so now I'm without any.

They give me a scope every 5 years, and they always tell me the inflammation is worse and the last time last march the stretched it, but it looks like it did not do any good, I don't know?!

Hi Darlene, they never called me yet, so I don't know, my bed is raised or elevated at the head too and I sleep on a wedge. A friend told me her sister had it so bad they did something called an esophgeal wrap, so I'm not sure what that is but if they ever call me I'm going to ask them about it, I think its surgery but it might be worth it so you don't feel like your choking when you eat or just choking.

Normally at the ER they would give me the gi cocktail to open the passageway but they did that the day I went to ER when the docs would not see me and it did not work, so he thought I had a stricture, and then he gave me a nitro as thats suppose to relax it and open it and it did not work, so he called the gastro and they gave me carafate to take but its hard to get that in as you have to take it 3 hours after you eat and 2 hours after other pills and I take so many pills that you dont' fit the carafate in, and it causes some problems anyway.

If they ever call me and tell me what now I will let you know, on here ok? I'm calling them today as they failed to call me back yesterday and I have to know I dont' want to go thru the weekend choking again.

Ellen,
I used to have acid boil up and out my nose, and be so sick couldnt sleep for only
bits n pieces at a time. Husband bought us a bed that has a lift so I could sleep
sitting up.

I have a lump on my thyroid also and on meds.....but I am only guessing here, and
I am no dr. but I wonder if when you are struggling to swallow if it does not cause your
veins/arteries to get pinched and the blood flow in your head constricts(which is basically
what happens with a migraine) and thats why your head is irritated.

It is miserable to feel like a small bite of something is big as a baseball......

Let us know, chick, what you find out....

I have had acid reflux for almost 20 years now, its been bad the last 10, I try to eat right and its still bad, sohope they call me today and tell me what now, it just feels like you can't swallow anything solid and food gets stuck and then it irriated my head for some reason, probably the pressure you have in your throat makes your head act up, one friend thought I had thyroid cancer, but will wait and see what the doc says, thanks for your support, its tough to have it as you choke alot.

I have acid reflux or rather had it almost every day. When I started this new plan
from my nutritionist which is basically gluten free, my acid relux disappeared. Since
Sept. 3rd, I have had 2 flare ups with it, only because I ate something not on my food
list.

Hope you find out what is wrong.....

I ma still working on lesson plans. Going to do my last one either today or tomorrow. Have been doing them on science lessons. I like science because there are so many hands-on stuff you can do with it. Never thought I would love to do science even though I enjoyed it in highschool and college.

Hope everyone has a good day!!!

GM everyone, its going to get cold here next week, I spent all day yesterday in the ER at one of the local hospitals here, I have an esophegeal stricture, and I have to get a test done, I'm not able to swallow solid foods I have to puree everything and the poor ER doc really tried to help me more than I can say for avera gastro doc, she blew me off when I went to her for help so I had no choice but to go to the hospital, I could not swallow, scarey very scarey, so he really tried and he did send me home with some medicatiion but its not helping much, but he said he would try to help and then they set up this test on weds, to see why I can't swallow without pain and chest pain.

I have had bad acid reflux for 19 years so I think I know whats wrong, but I will wait and see what the tests show before I panic. I hope your all doing good, take care ok?

I still feel ya, Dakota! We all have different things based on our doctors advice. Like the raspberries - my nephrologist says I can eat all I want - that I don't have to worry about them at all unless I'm in end stage kidney disease!

Phosphorus is hard because it doesn't show on labels. Here's a list of the top 10 food high in phosphorus:
www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/
hi
gh-phosphorus-foods.php

You can see that if you stay away from seeds, nuts, and soy you will remove the worst offenders from your diet. I really miss peanut butter.

I went nuts trying to figure out how to balance out my daily potassium so I stopped trying. I just don't eat the things that are on the high potassium list: Here's a link to a list:
www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/
fo
od-sources-of-potassium.php

I don't eat beans, potatoes, bananas, mushrooms, I only eat iceberg lettuce.

FOR ME, that's been enough to keep my kidney function close to normal. I can't say that will be true for you. Just thought narrowing down the conversation to two lists to start out with might help.

I am going to encourage you to follow your doctors orders and your nutritionist's advice.
The information shared in our forums is research that I or a team member has done. Our goal is to share helpful information in things that affect our kidneys.

I think you are becoming upset about all of this information.

Sorry Ladies, I'm ready to pull my hair out as nothing is making sense to me, nothing, she said I can eat raspberries that is on the low list she said but now I can't get a hold of her and I wish they had a class for this, my math is poor and when it comes to new stuff at my age I hate new stuff, I hate to relearn stuff, so I'm sorry I really am, I don't mean to sound like a ninny though I feel like one right now!

Ellen,
I want to encourage you to figure out what your goals are with your health and (ckd) chronic kidney disease - this will then give you a guideline to work from. You obviously want to make changes to improve your health - you are on spark, you saw a nutritionist and you are on this team. Change is hard work! And Change in general is hard.

Maintaining ckd is no picnic, eating fruits and veggies there are even restrictions - raspberries is one of the highest antioxitant berries - but in ckd they are not good for the kidneys - as they chrystalize in the kidneys. Tomatoes is a high power food also that has to be limited or avoided.

I know this is challenging for you - but you have to choose if you want to really want to change your lifestyle to maintain this disease and be healthier. No one can do it for you.
You have to learn the terminology and learn how to read ingrediants. Only you have control what goes in your body.

Please hang in there. Once you figure it out and come up with a food plan it does get easier. Do not stop asking questions and do not stop reading, even when things seem confusing. Keep doing it for you.

Ok I"m sorry girls but this kidney diet thing is like starvation it seems like, I dont' know how to calculate this stuff, and % of this or that and I"m ready to pull my hair out, and oh oh they rolled an ambulance here again, every week we have an ambulance here, wow I need to move somehwere else I hate to see people get hauled off by the ambulance every week, or day, its sad, I better go cram for what I can have for lunch but to me this seems like a starvation diet or else I'm not figuring it right and how do you they don't put half this stuff on labels!

Thank you Claire!!

Just a reminder: what I posted is a healthy kidney diet for someone on dialysis! I follow this diet, but adjust it what fits my physical well being - as Claire stated, my phosphorous levels are pretty normal - (mostly low) because I do not eat high phosphorous foods - I LOVE cheese and dairy but limit them. At any rate - you will figure it out - keep asking questions, but most importantly you need to read and research what works for you.

Dakota, I feel your pain! I joined this group right after I was diagnosed and trying to figure this all out. I was so confused! It took several months before I was settled down and confident with my diet choices. Each of us has something slightly different about our food choices per our doc/nutritionist. For example, the generic kidney diet recommends eating no nuts or seeds or beans yet your doc says some are okay. The generic diet says to minimize dairy, but because my blood tests show normal phosphorus levels, I can have an extra dairy serving a day.

This is why you're gonna go bonzo for awhile. There is the generic kidney diet - that's all the stuff Jean is showing you - and then there are individual tweaks for each of us based on our individual needs. So, when yours doesn't match up with what someone says, try not to stress so much and instead, just make a note of the differences. The next time you see your doc you can ask why. For example, "I'm told the standard kidney disease diet doesn't recommend more than a very small amount of any beans a couple times a week yet you tell me there are some I can have without concern. Can you explain this for me?"

Hang tough. Keep asking questions. Give yourself permission to be totally confused for a few months. Google "kidney disease diet" and start reading. At first, I barely understood any of it - all the talk about potassium and phosphorus! But as I kept reading, I started recognizing the same info over and over and I started absorbing it. Then, I'd come back here and bounce more questions off our group.

Oh Jean she did not give me that list at all, she said I can have cottage cheese and lots of fruit and canned in fruit juice and white bread and pita and bagles and shrinp, oysters clams, split peas, peanuts no salt kind, soy milk, and then higher phosphorous but acceptable were shrimp beans black navy, pinto, chickpeas, and that does not look right after I read your list, she works out of the hospital too but at the markets their contracted out but she works for the hospital but this list she gave me is not like your list at all, I don't understand now?

Thanks for the info. I have not got to limit Phospherous yet but it is good to know that there is somewhere that I can look to see what foods to limit or avoid.

Here is the list from our informational forum - I can read how frustrated you are - once you get a routine going of what you can eat and buy it will get easier.

I"m going to find it hard reading labels and she told me how much sodium or phosphorous you can have in a day, but most labels dont' put phosporous on them so how do I know and I'll spend hours in the grocery store just reading labels and I don't like to cook or shop! Its going to be a challenge thats for sure, any help you can give me is much appreciated, she gave me sample meal but its more food than I eat now, so I'm surprised, and she said she had to kick my intake of calories up and I can't lose weight on so many calories I can't even lose weight on 1200 now, so thats going to be a big problem, and she told me no chocolate which I was already told and fresh this and that or frozen, she even said canned but I have to rinse off the juice or liquid and then eat it plain or bland.

I think my biggest challenge is reading food labels I breeze in and out of the store so fast as I hate to grcoery shop, its my worst chore, so I'm going to be there for hours, and its a huge store so I don't think this is good but I have no choice I have to do it.

I RP - reposted some nutritional articles - the reason I posted the ones for a dialysis diet, is because this is the guideline I use to maintain my CKD.

Hi Dakota,

Things that are healthy and good like whole grains and wheat are not good for diseased kidneys. To make it easier on yourself, I want to encourage you to stay away from processed foods, limit dairy and if you have to buy stuff pre-mixed - buy the one with the least amount of ingrediants. It is work to learn all of the terminology of ingrediants and it would be so nice if they would put all of the info on the box.
I am going to try to update some nutrional info in the information forum this week.

Today I am doing much homework, my work out and going to mom and dads.

Love your kidneys!

Welcome back everyone, and good news on he weight loss! I am up early as flashing blue and red lights woke me up coming thru the bedroom window, they had rolled an ambulance to the fancy elderly apts behind me, at that time of the morning that can't be good, every week they roll and ambulance up there, I think some of the elderly people really belong in assisted living by the amount of ambulances that go up there every week, but in the night thats not a good sign.

I finally got to see a renal dietican yesterday, it only cost me $30.00 so that was not bad, and she gave me a sample menu and then what foods to avoid and what I can eat, and it means cooking and I hate cooking, I hate to be in the kitchen but for this I guess I will have to do and she told me I probably wont' be able to take my noon meals here anymore, as it did not sound all that healthy for me. What I was surprised about is I always was lead to believe whole wheat and multi grain breads were good now she 's telling me I have to eat white, so that was a real eye openener, and I can have diet soda only not dark ones and no potatoes which I love potatos so thats gonna be tough and no chocolate at all which is even tougher, but she thinks I can lose weight on it and I reallly have no choice, so she spent about an hour with me and it was good, and I got printouts I thought that were interesting, but what I think is going to be tough is reading labels as they don't put phosphours on labels so how do you know, its going to take me forever int he grocery store!

Hello from me, too! We've all been off doing our own things the past several months. So, I'm back to tracking my food again (but, I admit I'm not measuring) and I got on the treadmill again for the first time in months. I, too, joined the Jan Jumpstart, although I'm already a couple days behind.

Welcome back Caroline. They say that windows 8 is alot of fun. I rather stay where I am at (windows 7). I continue to do the things that need to be done (exercise, diet, liquids,etc.). I am still at stage 3 but thank goodness it hasn't progressed.

I ordered Body Gospel from beachbody yesterday, I'm not into pilates and its hard for me to get off the floor, this workout looks good but I did P90X last year and it was too hard for someone my age but I wanted something along a christian theme so I chose body gospel, and maybe later I can do something else, but I have to even build back up to this, so I guess I will try this for now, but don't give up on me ok?

Dakota go to sparkstreaks and you can reset your trackers there. You will not lose your streak progress, it will show your longest streak, consistency and current streak.

I have posted an announcement for the challenge - if you check it out there is a link to that teams page.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

I was going to use spark coach this week, not sure what jumpstart challenge is, there are some exercises I can't do or won't do, so I will have to go check this jumpstart out, and see what it is all about, how do you reset your trackers?

Oh yes Happy New Year everyone, thanks Jean for the message, I did call the place and they said they have to get those medical records from my doctor as its run by a doctor and they have to get information about me before they can see if they can work with me in their program, and the kidney doc called too, so I got to talk to his nurse. Happy New Year everyone, may 2013 be a good year for all of us! emoticon
