Here's a link to a short ditty that explains what they are in plain English. I try to read some of the stuff I find on-line and it's so techy medical gabble-dee-gook.
You'll have to cut and paste: my phone doesn't like the "add a link" feature. Hope this helps!

Hey guys! Can someone explain to me the relation between creatinine and Bun result - or is there one? My creatinine is 1.2 and has been for the last four years - which is ok for me with the 1 kidney. But the Bun result always seems to be at the high end of what they call normal. My current year blood work shows normal bun at 7-21 and mine is at 21. Any advice or explanation would be welcome.

I saw my nephrologist today. I was so anxious to hear my test results since I've consumed a river of sugar. I was expecting a lecture. I got pays on the back! My eGFR is 52. I've been between 50 & 53 for about 3 years. Everything else I eat is absolutely within my prescribed kidney diet - I'm definitely doing that part right. (I had a couple slices of banana for the first time I. 4 years the other day and it was so creamily lucious).
All my other blood levels are normal: phosphorus, potassium, creatinine EXCEPT not surprisingly my glucose, which is 140! Eek.
Instead of the lecture about candy etc she told me to put real cinnamon - buy the sticks and grind it, not the ground in a jar for cooking type - in a lot of my food. She says the cinnamon helps insulin work more effectively.
I'm smiling!

I've got my blood work order and I'm seeing my doc in a few weeks. I'm dreading the news - I've been off a proper diet since the last time I saw her in August.
How is everyone else doing with their tests?

Jean, no problem, i know how it goes, we all have other things going on. But our Kidneys our a priority (most of the time) meaning we all get caught up in other things in our life. I hope your new Dr. works out for you. I have been looking again for a new Neph. i do like this one but he doesnt spend much time with me or other patients, kinda wants you in and out. The one office girl is not very nice with people who come in. I think they should hire someone with CKD so they can relate to patients. My thinking any way. And they charge you so much, so you should be able to be with the Dr. at least more than 10 minutes. C

Caroline I have my blood work done every three months - I used to see my neph once a year due to keeping my numbers in good shape - then NOT at all due to my pcp... I just started with a new one - she wants to see me back in Oct - that will be a two month span - we will see -
Looking over my paper work I am maintaining stage 3 with stage 2 readings - she diagnosed me with stage 2... even though I told her I am in stage 3... we all know why that is!
At any rate - I have the itchy skin, tiredness all the time, kidney pain and other issues.. I have learned to live with it...
sorry for the late reply - geez I did not catch up at all this month - I am too busy with mom and dad Jean

I couldnt crunch on it, because my teeth won't take the pressure....too many fillings...lol
However, I see my Nephrologist in a couple weeks, so will ask him about the wheatgrass but my guess is he will look at me like I am crazy.
go ahead, if you don't mind and send the website and we shall see what they say and what he says...
Thanks for all your research and help, Darlene

I do believe the Iron meds are helping me. I am also taking Organic Wheatgrass in the form of frozen cubes. You can make it into a juice or put in a smoothie if you want. I really have gotten sort of use to it. I put it in a little bowl and crunch on it like a ice cube. I will take a sip of water or ice tea after each crunch.. Now i did check with my Renal Dietitian and she said it was ok. It is suppose to help with digestion and it has so far and helps with your energy and it has, and all over immune system. If any one is interested i do have the web site you can go to and check it out. Check with your Renal dietitian or Dr. before using.

Darlene, sorry im a little late on this. I always go to Amazon and check there prices with Swanson. I have found by comparing a few sites these 2 are the lowest in prices. Also i find that the products i use, you usually have to go to a health food store and the one we have locally is more expensive so its easier for me to order. Amazon has no shipping fee nor tax, so sometimes this is much mopre cheaper. I hope this helps. Caroline

I have to start taking Ferrous Tabs for iron. B12 and and continue on my Renal Caps The Ferrous Tabs at the drug store have Dicalcium phosphate in them, so i am going on line to check out the site where i get my D3 and E I have to take these for at least 3 months and then be checked again. I usually buy the brand of Jarrow, or Carlson----they do not have fillers in them, so you get the real thing. Caroline

That makes a big difference, too - I don't have these other issues or symptoms. If the doc didn't tell me I had something wrong, I would have no clue.

I am still in stage 3, and i think that's is to long to wait for me any way. I will see Neph this Wed. so i will know something i hope as to why i have been so weak and tired all the time. something has to be causing this, and I'm not use to feeling like this.

Just like our diet requirements, C, the frequency of our tests is individualized. When I first started seeing my nephrologist, I saw her every 3 months. As I moved my eGFR up out of the forties into the 50's and then 60's, she extended my visits to 4 months then 5 then 6 and this last time I was told not to come back for 8 months.
If my numbers drop again the next time I see her, I'm sure my she'll have me back more often.
I see my PCP every 6 months to check my sugar A1C and my thyroid since I have Hashimoto's.

My last one was 6 months, i think we with CKD shold at least have it done at least every 3 months. I do know if i dont feel that great my primary care Dr. will do blood work. I just think 6 months is to long to wait. My opinion any way.. C
