I am now. I've been in the hospital for colitis. Catching up on a lot of stuff, but will be back on Sparkpeople regularly. Thanks for asking, Caroline.

My doctor was specific only about calcium. I take 1200 mg (2 chews) a day, plus it has D3 at 800 IU. My multi has 500 IU. I will ask him what he thinks about more. I take a 1000 mg Omega 3 daily. I take chromium picolinate, B-12, CoQ10, fenugreek (for multiple metabolic benefits), 1 chocolate probiotic chew, alpha lipotic acid capsules and 2.5 tbles of joint juice.

This is a fairly new regimen for me, but the joint juice is helping and so is the probiotic.
I have IBS so with one yogurt a day, it is going well.

My Nephrologists put me on 5000 iu Vitamin D3 a day, last year.
I just read a article on heart disease, and Dr, want their heart patients to take the fish oil with omega3 and vit. D. they have found the Dis very good for the heart and the combination is better, so we can take this also, just dont go over the amount of D they tell you to take.
My other vitamin is Renal Caps a prescription for CKD patients. i do take the fish oil with the omega 3 in it..
Thanks Jen for the reminder.

I don't take any supplements of any kind. My Vitamin D level is in the normal range!

Thank's Jealyn and Aria. It looks like I need to get in touch with my nephrologist. I am so pleased with what vitamin D has done for me so far. I was placed on vitamin D in 2003 by my epileptologist due to a very low level. He said that 100 years ago they believed that low vitamin D could be the reason for seizures in some cases and they were taking a fresh look at it. I have not had a seizure since I began taking it 9 years ago. One of my fears when I learned that I have CKD was that I would no longer be able to take it, so I am pleased to learn that there is a possibility that large doses are also beneficial for CKD. It truly is a miracle vitamin.

My vitamin D tested low which is common in CKD patients. CKD need higher doses of Vit D, ask your doc what your specific need may be.

I did a post on Kidney Disease and Vitamin D.

Here is the info from that post:
There is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the chronic kidney disease population. Vitamin D is often administered to patients to mitigate detrimental effects on bone health and mineral metabolism, though this treatment may be limited by elevations in serum calcium and phosphorus. This article reviews the basic physiology of vitamin D, the survival data in patients receiving vitamin D, and the current quandary of whether vitamin D administration is beneficial in chronic kidney disease. entire article: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17293681

I am rx'd 50, 000 once a week. I have had my levels checked and I am beyond deficient.... So the dr added another 10k a week.... I have 5k pills cuz that was the highest I found (also at Sam's Club) and I take that 2x a week.

Interesting topic. I take 3000 a day which was approved by my nephrologist after checking my levels. I am curious as to why your nephrologist recommends 10,000 IU a day. Were your levels extremely low, or is there new research that we need to know about? Any information that you have will be appreciated. I am also interested in knowing if anyone else on the team is on a high dose of vitamin D. I have read that it is helpful to the kidneys, but the dose was not mentioned.

My Nephrologist recommends I take 10,000 IU a day - what does your doc recommend?

On a side note: I want to share that I found Vitamin D-3 in a 10,000 IU capsule - I do not have to take five pills a day anymore! I am so happy! I found them at Sam's club for about $11.00.
