Thank you so much emoticon . today was a good day, i made Potato Soup with veggies in it. Carrots, Peas, Onions, Green Beans, Flax Meal, Milk and chicken Broth. I use frozen veg. when fresh not available. I always soak my potato's all night to lessen the phosphorus in them. The chicken broth helps lessen the amount of dairy i use. Had to find a new way to make this soup after CKD. This way i get some veggies too.
Played with the dog out side, she is a walker and runner but me i am a walker , so she runs and i walk. I ordered my coffee from Amazon, no tax, no shipping charges.
Trying to get the apt. ready for Scott(son) to move into. Its down stairs, we built it for my Mom after my Dad passed away. She passed a few years ago. So i have been busy. emoticon

Just to clairfy: I want to make sure that the topic posts that are going in that forum are strictly kidney disease info that is pertinent to kidney care. Caroline you can post the same topic in forum above it for comments if you like.

If you read this before my edit... I had a lapse in memory... please forgive me and let it go. I do like the forum to be just the info - so new members do not have to go all the way to the bottom of the post. Thank you Claire!

Caroline please POST away.

Claire , i see what you are saying, i personally like reading the former articles, i understand what you are saying. I hope the "newbies" will ask questions and respond with what they know.
I think this new outline is good, every thing takes time to get use to, just like getting use to the idea I have CKD. sometimes i still dont want to believe it, but its a fact of life i have it.
I think sharing information is so good for our team. I will say a formum for no chatting will be hard for me, because i usually have a word or two to say. As my children use to call me chatter mouth. LOL
Every one please remember Faith in your prayers.

Claire, I very much appreciate your input. I understand what you are saying.

I appreciate all of your input and Caroline and I will be exchanging info and updating some things in our forums.

I do like the challenges and I do like the sharing of information - the info is the main reason I started this team - there was no team on spark that offered CKD info and I wanted to do that. I could have taken over one of the older teams, but chose to start from scratch. (I did join them all and eventually left)...

at any rate - There will be a few changes made - starting with a new chat room monthly. This will break up some of the chats. I will also implement a challenge forum - each challenge will be focused on the things that help maintain kidney disease, diet, exercise, tracking both and being accountable for it. I do like the idea of making a forum for NO chatting - just posting the info for reading. One forum can be for topics where members can post. Maybe a question related to the posting. I understand about the overwhelming volume of information - and not knowing where to start. It may take me a while to get the forums in order - please be patient, I do not have a lot of time to get this right now - but will each day work on changing one thing.

I need to chat with Caroline and we will work together..

Please note: Faith is very ill - please stop by her page and leave her an encouraging message or goodie.

I will send out an email regarding this info.

Jean

I don't think I said my thing very well. I'm suggesting a sticky thread called something that means "All yee read here first!" Then in it we put the type of stuff I put in the note below. To help get a new person started. I totally agree that we have posted these things over and over - I'm just saying, let's stop posting it over and over. Let's give a new person a place to get the basics and then point them elsewhere to gain more knowledge from there - including our own team forums. The pages of threads filled with words I've never heard was intimidating, is all. Could be just me, which would be a good thing.

We have posted these things, and i personally think it is good to review all these things. and also we have said we are not Dr.'s and each individual of CKD is different and has different needs. I think i know what you mean, but i am not sure, is this some of the things you are talking about, what i listed. Clair look at my post below, these are the things you mentioned, that we have done, but will do again, for new members and us (oldies).

When I first joined the team and started asking questions I was referred to the "loving our kidneys' forum because of all the resources you guys had already made available there. So, I went there - and was overwhelmed. So much there and I at that point didn't even know what I should be looking at first, 2nd, or 3rd.

It's unfortunate that you have to repost these things from the "loving our kidneys" forum, but that's really the only way we can learn this stuff is a bit at a time. Maybe it would be worth it to create a "Do Not Post in this thread"Sticky in that section that gives a user friendly generic overview - no techy garbel-de-gook. I'm not sure what I even mean. What comes to mind are things like (after the "we are not medical people and all these things might not apply to you blah blah" disclaimer):

These are the blood tests we should use to monitor our kidney health:
eGFR - it measures how well our kidneys are working.
Creatinine - blah blah
etc....

Here are the nutrients we should track daily because they damage our kidneys:
Potassium
Phosphorus
Sodium
etc....

There are foods high in the nutrients that can damage your kidneys. Here are links to threads/articles that list the foods that are damaging or healthy for your kidneys. Most importantly, your doctor should refer you to a renal dietician to tailor a diet just for you.
blah blah

Here are the organizations that we most often use as resources:
DaVita
aakp
...

and so on

I will post a few challenges this month and see how many we can get to participate. I am open to most anything -

Tracking nutrition, exercise, sleep, - posting - I will spend some time tomorrow thinking about this - I will continue to post and re-post info on Kidneys - that has always been a constant within our team.. as we have all shared info.

Thank YOU so much team!

Hi Caroline,
Thanks for the encouraging answer. Sounds like you and the other team leaders are doing
their work! Hope you can come up with some good challenges we can all work on together.
The information is great too, but we need to know how to apply it to our lives. That is where the challenges and check-ins come in.

I too did a lot of research when I first found out about the nephritis and then CKD.
I knew next to nothing and had to learn everything I know from the bottom up. With medical
science the way it is, there is no end in sight to the new information out there.

I do not know why my phosphorus has never been checked. I have all sorts of lab tests
done every six months as I have other issues I need to work on as well, but have never seen that one. I will ask about it when I see my nephrologist at the end of the month. Maybe she does check it, but I never see the numbers on my check sheet she sends me.

Thanks again for your good work! Hope you can come up with some great ideas for the team.

Sue

PS. My puppy takes me for a walk each day too!

Sue ,you are right and we have done every thing you are suggesting all stress Diet, especially Renal Diet, even if you are not on Dialysis,A Renal Dietitian, not a regular dietitian. always take your blood work to RENAL DIETITIAN. We have done articles on Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium, Protein, Dairy, Calories. Reading Labels, Artificial Sweeteners, Coke, Any kind of soda, diet soda, so many i cant even think of them now. Organic foods. Vitamins, Herbs, Dr's, Kidney Sites, Water, Exercise, Even the shoes you wear when you exercise, What exercise suits you the best. Cooking oils, different kinds of milk. Keeping a journal, Being good to yourself, Medication, Questions to ask your Dr. They are so many things we have done i can even post all of them but the more i think of them, i am so proud we did them. Your GFR, , the 5 stages of CKD. what the Kidneys do for our body. To repeat these are a good idea.
As far as Diet i am a big believer in diet, i had to learn the hard way, My first Neph. was not the best. I learned so much on this site from Jen. I did research on my own also.
I do not know why your Nephrologist does not check your Phosphorus, this should be a yes, yes, check me. I would really look into this, for you do need to know how much you need a day.
I could go on about other things we have posted, but the list is so long.
I am so glad you are interested in Diet for i truly believe it can keep your CKD from progressing. Thank you for your input, this is what we like. Please, please get your phosphorus checked. If you go to DaVita.Com they will tell you a lot about diet and you can have your own record on their site.
By the way my dog takes me for a walk every day. Glad you are with us on this team.

I have a different take on what our team needs.
We are a group that has a common disease or some form of it.
One of the things I learned when I first heard I had kidney problems was that I needed to
exercise, and to follow some rather specific dietary rules.
For the benefit of all, it would be good to review what we need to be watching in our diets
because of our kidney problems. It was hard at first for me to adjust and for those who
are new to this area, it would be a good thing to focus on nutrition.
I believe that having weekly challenges to help meet these goals and needs would be good.
Such as checking our daily sodium. I have had that one on my daily goals for awhile and it
helps to keep it in check. I have never checked my phosphorus and my doctors do not
check it when I have lab tests done.
Also, we all know that exercise helps to improve our health in many ways. If we had
a weekly challenge to help get us up and going it would be a good thing for all. It was
and is exercise that helps to keep me healthy.
Information or some encouragement to help me our health goals would be great too.

That's my take on the challenges and things to do.

So very true... all things make the world go around - thank you all for the input. What may motivate one or some does not motivate others. I think too Sparkpeople developed some tools to keep people interested and teams going. Many teams die from lack of participation. Some information may change over time - as they learn more about kidney disease new info is added, BUT a lot of the info I posted from two years ago - is still relevant today and many of our newer members have not either seen or read these posts, which is why I started re-posting them. And too, the games and goodies motivate others to participate in teams daily.

And always yes yes yes - we love input and information from everyone on the team. I always STICKY the new info - sometimes it may stay on the top for a week or two... sometimes a few days.

Thank you all for the input.

As always continue to love your kidneys.

What makes the world go round--different strokes for different folks as they say. Claire i can see where you are coming from, but also i think, other things we do help us from getting to bored. Yes i love when we post articles about our disease on here and i do believe we have done a lot of this, go back and look and you will see these articles.
Maybe and i know i have not posted a lot lately about CKD, but i have had some problems and i am solving them now, Their has been some illness also on the team, but we have kept it going and so far so good. They are some teams that are just inactive, but we are here for all of you.
I personally learned a lot from this team when i first joined, i hope every one will participate, for this is how we learn.
Lisa go for it, we love to have are members post.
I thank Jen ,in my mind every day for this team , as i said before i have learned so much here and it made me want to explore CKD even more, and learn more, and it has helped me so much.

I like to learn too about Kidneys too. I am relatively new at having a Kidney disease. So learning is always good.
If each of us could check out 1 web site that might have new info each week, then post the interesting new thing we have learned, this might be interesting.
Just a suggestion.

Emoticon based challenges don't do much for me, honestly. Is it going to compel me to log in every day? No Ditto the daily games. For me, I don't understand what the draw is to 'name a synonym' or all the other word games. What does any of this have to do with building a healthy life style? T

These different teams are built around a commonality whether it be cooking, age, type of exercise or health issue. To me, each team should be focusing on the reason the team was created. That's one of the reasons I decided to plan a face to face meet & greet with/for the Arizona team - if geography is the the point of the team, then we should be doing geography based things.

So, obviously, I think we should do challenges related to kidney disease. We've had challenges that are about tracking your potassium & phosphorus, which makes sense to me. The thing is, that's not something I ever do. I'm sure I'm not alone in not needing to do that yet. I don't think I've evercalculated my daily phosphorus. I just pretty much eliminate the hi phosphorus foods from my diet, rather than figuring out some way to fit them. My last eGFR was 59, so this method is working for me. In summary I think these are good challenges, but don't expect full team interest/need.

The only type I can think of that we should all need to do is to learn more. Read a new article a week and share the link? Would we we find enough unique articles weekly for the entire team? Comment on or blog (outside SP) about kidney specific articles weekly?

Welcome to February!

What are you doing to challenge yourself this month team?
I just joined the 28 day Bootcamp Team. www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_i
nd
ividual.asp?gid=42559

I am changing up the goodies this month - please log your emoticon for the day and your exercise emoticons.. I did a bit of this last month with the top members.

Please let us know if there is something else we can offer you in our forums. I will be seeking out some NEW info on CKD. On that note - I miss Maury terribly... he was not only my friend but he sent me information weekly for the team. (For those who do not know who Maury was, he was my contact at the Michigan Kidney Foundation).

The goodie game is still not that popular in our team.... LOL who doesnt like getting goodies?

Would you like to see a challenge or two again in the forums? These were not that popular either but they sure helped me get on track with my logging my nutrition daily.

Please drop me or Caroline a note and let us know how we are doing and give us your input.
Thank you.
Keep Loving Your Kidneys!
Jean

I am going to send out an team email with this info too.

My back feels strange some times. It is so hard to explain, I have never told anyone yet. It hurts, but only in the low ache way. I have to move it to keep comfortable. Oh, I can't really explain it. Anyway. Hope you are well. Hope this back thing just goes away at some point.

Sorry I went MIA. Carolyn, thanks for coming by to give me a poke.

I really want an exercise buddy if I can find one, so in one of the Arizona team forums I said I'd be willing to help put a rally together. I didn't expect much of a response because I figured most folks would be into their own thing. Five hours after I sent an "are you interested?" email I had 60 firm RSVPs! So, suddenly I've gone from a picnic in the park to an event with games to occupy kids and so forth! Between now and mid-April there is a lot to do.

I'll stop in again as soon as I get my eyes back up above water again!

Well, thanks for the care you guys. The spots turned out to not be a concern! Yea...
HSP is a form of vasculitis of the blood, (a blood disease) . It stands for a long name in German that I won't bore you with. It can move to the Kidney to shut down the Kidney. That is how I got my kidney disease.
These skin spots look exactly the same, but are of a different origin. Thankfully I was able to see a dermatologist right away, because this blood disease moves quickly if it had been restarting. I am so relieved.

It's possible!

My whole kidney disease (thing) started with HSP, some spots on my legs. I suddenly got some new spots on my arm yesterday! Not sure what they are, but they look the same as the HSP spots I had.
I hope to see my dermatologist soon to ask what it is. I hope this whole thing is not starting up again.

We are in central Illinois and got about 4 inches of snow. We have had such a mild winter, it is almost a shock to experience this now!
I agree - can't wait for spring to really get here!

My son says is snowing in Illinois...and there have been many accidents, 1 a schoolbus going
sideways....knowing where he said it is, I am THANKFUL God prevented the bus overturning.

Will likely hear from my SIL in Kansas City later.....bet they have snow too....

We have gloomy skies here, but no snow yet. Drat..................

Ya know Jean, I think you are on to something......we have been coughing the last two
months, ever since we really had to turn the furnace on. Wonder if a humidifier would
help???? Moisten the air????

We don't do the flu shots, but I do take high dosage of Vit. D-3 on advice of my Rheumatologist who has since retired, drat again.....he is an excellent dr.....but says he is
enjoying retirement....as I had an email from him this week. I told him if he went back to
work part-time we would be happy to drive the 65-70 miles to Hunstville to see him....I just
don't trust easily..........

What a day today. Cloudy, rain, thunderstorms, hail, size of dimes, nickles, quarters, built up on our back deck. My SUv was out side, and its to dark now to tell if any damage. Water running every where.
Made some soup., and a butter cake, the light way.
I am so sleepy, weak and tired all the time for about 4 weeks now. My son says its all the stress. I will be glad when i go to Neph. on the 24, of this month.. Better days to come. emoticon

To day i was thinking of when my children were small and growing up and the things we use to do together. there was not all the electronics then as now. My children were always out side playing and as they got older, it was baseball, football, soccer, cheerleading, gymnastics, Tie Quan Doe etc. But there was the other fun things, picnics, parades they were in, family gathering's i was active in things for my self as well. I am so glad my family is close, in heart and love. Just thinking how blessed i have been with my children. emoticon emoticon church, and church outings. emoticon

emoticon emoticon Claire that is great! Please let us know how it goes.

I stopped by an old doc office building the other day and saw that they have a dialysis center in the building - I think it was DaVita. I am always willing to learn more, too. Information is the key to knowledge. I am going to stop in when I am down that way next week and inquire about a class.

Claire, please share your experience with us. Thanks so much! Jean

Claire the classes here in Knoxville are free at DaVita and also so is the Renal Dietitian, but here she is usually on a different day than classes so you have to come in on the day she is here. Take your blood work with you just in case.

OK will do Jen.

FINALLY! DaVita is putting on some classes in the Valley and I just signed up for the "CKD Stage 3: Taking Control of Kidney Disease". It's 2 hours and they didn't say anything about a charge for the class and they didn't ask for any insurance info either, so I hope it's as free as it seems! I'm sure you've taught me all the major stuff, but I'm confident there is always more to learn and they are a great group from which to learn. It's next Thursday - I'll be sure to let you know all about it as soon as I can!

Jen, sounds like you are very busy, dont forget me time for your self.
Claire thanks for the info, i believe these drugs would be to strong for me. I need like a SSRI. I have been trying to find something natural that i could take with out hurting Kidneys.
My neck started hurting me yesterday, i can always tell when the stress really starts, and the neck is first on the list, and no sleep last night. Went to bed at 7:00 am and Lexy (dog) woke me up at 10:00 am , time for her to eat and go potty. Hpe every one has a good evening.

Im starting to take control of my life today. I will take care of me, love my self., be good to my self, I am strong, i can do this.

I hope everyone is on the mend... I am so sorry I have been so busy!

Don was home for 2 weeks and spent as much time as possible with him and family. I of course still went to mom and dad's 2 days a week.. I am very exhausted. I have been cleaning and putting away Christmas.

Shingles not fun! I am so sorry Faith!

Darlene, Sinus Infections are not a nice way to start the New Year - I am hoping you are feeling better. I cannot stand it when receptionists think the pain is OK to live with for any amount of time. I hope you are on the mend!

Claire, thank you for the info on anti-depressants!

Caroline, I do hope that you find relief sooner than soon! I am doing OK. Family time has helped to lift my spirits alot.

I am not sure that I am going to see the War Horse or not. I won free movied tickets - I want to go see a 3D Imax movie with them.

Take care all!
Love your kidneys~

Thanks Claire, Celexa made me sleepy, and when i took it at night i was sleepy all day. I have not heard of these 2 you are taking, i will look them up. Things in my life for about 8 months now, and with the death of my grandson and my mother ,plus i was her caretaker for about 14 years, i believe has finally taken its toll. But i know it will work out.

I'm sorry you're having difficulty with depression. Hopefully, it IS situational and subsides when your stress level improves. I've struggled with depression most of my life and it gets tiring trying to look through or around it. So, I stopped trying. When I recognize it's got hold of me, I acknowledge its impact on whatever is going on and imagine how I WOULD feel without it. Then I do the best I can to react like 'I should' and often it helps. I take Lamictal and Seroquel together and I've never ever felt better!

I hope you feel better soon, too.

I have had a nasty cough, started when i started Celexa, i did not like the way it made me feel so stopped it last week i still have cough guess i will have to go see Dr.. I guess i will have to fight my own depression for right now, never had it so did not know what to do. May be when my stress is out of my life i will be ok.
Let's drink some tea, settle on the sofa and watch a old movie, on TCM. OK emoticon to every one.

He had the girl call me back and said for me to go get some ZYRTEC-D...
Ok, I rather suspected that would not be on my list of approved otc meds
with kidney disease, but David went to Walmart and they have moved all of that stuff behind the counter now, apparently, and they take down your info and check with the police and
everything.............
OKAY, sounds like a HASSLE to me regardless of it says on the side, not for people
with KIDNEY or LIVER disease.

I am so sorry about your sinus infection and especially about your doctor's attitude. Many people don't realize how painful sinus infections can be. Been there, done that so I know how you feel. I hope you get better.
As for me, I was able to run 14 miles today. It was a very slow run but I was able to do it. I feel as if I am slowly resurrecting. It has not been a good month but I think I am over the worst of it. I am sorry everyone for being MIA. I was so sick.

Hi Faith, that makes two of us then.

I only have a sinus infection tho.....

Guess what?? I call the dr. this morning, bear in mind we have to go in tomorrow morning
for our bloodwork and so forth, and she says well he will probably just want you to wait til
tomorrow .............. DUH.....I said well, that may be fine for him, but my cheekbones feel like they are going to explode today.....so she said she would check with him and if I don't hear
from her then call the pharmacy....his compassion is sadly lacking.........
