emoticon WTG on the Girl Muscle!!

emoticon I did buy a set of 2 Resistance Bands with Handles because I got a Large, Unexpected Bonus at work. However, this morning I did the 20 Minute Seated Resistance Band Workout with Coach Nicole with the Purple Band (No Handles) that came with one of my Leslie Sansone DVDs.
emoticon My Thighs are STILL Crying, LOL!! Definitely saving that Video to My Favorites. The only move I just Could Not get right was (I think) the "Reverse Tricep Press"

LJ you may just need a "heavier" band.
The hospital/PT ones are usually pretty light, and stretch fairly easy.
The handled ones are best IMO and come in many different lengths to suit what you are working! When I had a desk job I would keep different sized jugs/bottles of water under my desk for lifting during breaks!

emoticon I am looking for something light weight and portable that I can take to work and use for Strength Training during "Downtime" I have some Resistance Bands similar to the PT Straps that they use at the Hospital and Nursing Homes. So far I have not been very impressed with them or with the Few Resistance Band Workouts that I have seen/tried.
I am wondering if the Resistance Bands with handles on them would be different enough to be worth the investment?
emoticon I also have some 2 pound weighted balls that I do like a lot. Do you have any ideas or suggestions for inexpensive Strength Training at work? I am also doing some Body Weight exercises like planks and push ups.

My sister in law is a team beach body coach.
I am thinking of buying a package from her. The Body Beast program looks like it is in line with my current goals. And it comes with protein powder and meal replacement, and supplements for a month.

Has anyone done the work out before?

I buy the powder and make it into smoothies. The quickest is to grab some leftover cold coffee + milk + choc. protein powder. It works to head out the door in the AM.

The cost of already-made shakes is pretty much outside my budget, and I haven't found anything of quality worth throwing money at. Just my 2 cents...

I use protein shakes as well. -- For the month of March I've had an issue w/ a tooth that put me on liquids and only occasional chewing on one side. (definitely a hassle)

I vary my protein source. Probably the best I used in the past was egg white. (Personally, I can't stand pea protein.) -- I haven't seen too much (or any) negatives w/ Apex proteins. It seems to be a quality company.

If you have one that works well for you, I'd be interested!

Jess,
I am not familiar with that one. I have done two Wii Sports 90 day programs and P90X. I know people that have done Insanity as well. None of my programs had any nutrition supplement as part of the exercise. For me, the way to be successful in completing one of these programs is to set aside a certain time of day, every day, to dedicate yourself to the program.

Has anyone tried Lee Labrada's Lean Body 12 week program on Bodybuilding.com?

Jeannie your exercises are a great start toward real pull ups. P90X has you take a chair and put one foot on it while doing pull ups if you can't do it without the chair.

emoticon I almost forgot, I have also been doing some "Leaning Pull Ups On The Smith Machine" There is a demonstration in the Spark Exercise Videos. Not sure if I really believe it is helping me or not, but I am hoping that it is a step toward a "Real Pull Up".

Jeannie the only thing stopping you is you and your mind. You can do more than you think. See the posts below. Once you get in a class make sure you cannot see a clock. Just enjoy the class and go at a pace that you are having fun at. I bet the time will fly and you will find it more fun than you imagined.

emoticon Thank You, Bob!! I knew I could count on you!!

emoticon I have added some Leslie Sansone Walking DVDs which I haven't done in a long time, and I added the Resistance Bands and Light Hand Weights to them. I am trying VERY Hard to make myself take a Zumba Class at the Gym. My Biggest reasons not to do it are that I was afraid it was High Impact which I can't handle and after watching Several Videos on YouTube, I think it is not nearly as High Impact as I thought. It kind of reminds me of the Leslie Sansone Videos, honestly.
I am also afraid that I can't do a whole class length (most of my Exercise is in 20 -30 minutes Chunks) or that I will make a fool of myself. I know that is just an Excuse.

To break through plateaus I always recommend change ups. With food do a calorie spike day. Eat and have fun eating for one day, then go back to the diet you were on before. Some people's bodies think that they are either starving or for another reason need to be in a fat conservation mode. The spike sometimes gets rid of this internal programming. With weight training it is a change as well. Try rotating through different body part workouts and changing what you lift. Try some new exercises that you don't usually do. I occasionally add in a fitness class. That pushes you to do some movements you might not always work into your program.

emoticon I have a question and I am posting it here because I think I am less likely to open myself to Criticism or Ridicule here than on an open Message Board or even in a Blog. I apologize if it is a Long Question, but I want you to have all the Information so you can give me an Informed Opinion.
emoticon I have been lifting as Heavy as I could since January. When a weight gets "Easy" I increase it.
emoticon For the first few months I was Not Eating as well as I should have been, but for the past 2 -3 months I think I have done pretty good -- Not aiming for "Perfect" or "Clean" eating, but for lots of Vegetables, Fruit, and Lean Protein. I also have Ice Cream or Dark Chocolate when I have the Calories available and in Right Portions.
I know that I get Too Much Sodium, and I am working at lowering that, and drinking plenty of Water to help flush it out. I have always had a Problem with Too Much Sodium, partly because I do not eat at home very often. That is not going to change.
emoticon My Weight and Measurements have NOT come down in several months. I tried Exercising Less since I suspected I was Burning Much More than I was eating -- and the Spark Tracker shows that I WAS Burning almost Twice the Calories I believed I was. Not sure if I completely trust that, though? I also tried increasing my Cardio and Decreasing my Strength Training (just the length of my Workouts, not the Weight I was Lifting).
emoticon My question is -- Would it be Logical to Decrease the Weight I am Lifting? I lost all my Weight doing Curves, which is more of a Cardio Workout than a Strength Training one. I lost consistently Every Month, and did Not hit a Plateau until I got to my Goal Weight.
emoticon I will appreciate any Advice or Opinion you can offer.

Completely agree that toughness is in the mind. Ask any Marine who has a can do attitude and they will tell you the mind gives in first.

Congrats on the deadlift. Keep up the strength training. It will help you bones as well as your muscles.

emoticon Fiddled around a bit with the Bars at the gym on Sunday. Did a Successful Straight Leg Deadlift with a 60 Pound Bar. Did not hurt my back or knees at all, to my Surprise. My knees were pretty sore last night, but that may have been from the "Foothills" on the Treadmill yesterday, LOL!

emoticon I increased the Lat Pull to 80 pounds and the Low Row to 75 pounds this week, but I had to decrease the Reps per set to 8 (from 10) in order to maintain Proper Form. It is Harder than it looks, LOL!!!

I think resistance training and weight training both have a similar effect, and you should probably look at them the same way:

The best weight for weight training, is a weight that you can do more than 8 reps of, but struggle to reach 15, as soon as you can (easily) reach 15, it's time to move on.

I think resistance bands are probably very similar, they can provide a nice workout, but if it's too easy to do they won't have any effect.

I own two levels of resistance bands and the heavier one is definitely giving my muscles a good burn, this tells me that they are really doing something for me.

I should add: I only use them in combination with weight training, usually near the end of my workout.

emoticon Now I am looking at those Resistance Bands. They seem to come in 3 Resistance Levels so I could give the Lighter Resistance ones to my Mother to do with her Chair Exercises and keep the Heavier Resistance for me.

Check out the KettleBell routines that were on a recent SparkPeople blog. There were some great exercises IMHO. I would like to try some of them and it seems like the weights you got are just right for those types of exercises. Good price for 3 kettlebells, plus DVD!

emoticon I used the Seated Dip Machine last week (once). Then today when I started to use it I noticed the Diagram on it and realized that I sat down on it BACKWARDS last week!

However, I looked at it on YOUTUBE just now and maybe you can sit down either Facing It OR Facing Away? I'm thinking if that is True, you would be working different muscles depending on how you sat down?

Congratulations on the lost inches. Sounds like you are gaining some muscle. Those are big changes for waist, abdomen, thinghs and arms.
Tuesday was lifting and core. Wednesday was lifting core and elliptical. Today might just be lifting and core. Trying to make sure I keep the routine mixed.

emoticon Walked 2.5 miles after work with my Oldest Son. He only recently decided that he "Needed" to get in shape and asked if he could walk with me. He is over 6 foot tall and I am just over 5 Foot tall. But I am keeping up with him -- Or he is slowing down for me, I really am not sure.

emoticon The Spark Tracker keeps telling me that I am "Exercising Too Much & Not Eating Enough." In the past 3 months I have Gained 10 pounds. I have not lost any inches that I am aware of, and my Body Fat actually went UP a little. Last week I tried cutting way back on my Cardio, but I still gained 2 pounds. This week I am going to try Cutting back --A Little! -- on the Lifting and keep the Cardio around 60 minutes on Non-Lifting days.

emoticon If I don't chicken out I am supposed to get Weighed & Measured this week and they will check my Body Fat again.

emoticon I increased the Weight on the Chest Press by 10 Pounds, and on the Leg Press by 5 Pounds. I did lower the Weight on the Pec Dec by 5 Pounds because the last several times I've worked out, it just didn't feel "Right". Watching myself in the mirror I think my Form is OK, and I have adjusted the seat and the position of the bars several ways, but I just couldn't get it where it felt "Right". It does feel better with the Lower Weight so I will try that for a few weeks, then try going Up again.

emoticon Interestingly, I have noticed during the last few weeks that my Heart Rate is getting elevated when I am Lifting. I don't think that has happened before. It doesn't feel Bad, or Scary or anything like that. It goes up to about what it is when I am doing a Long Walk and it goes down by the time I finish Stretching at the end of my Workout.

I think the SP article was focused on those people who only do aerobic type exercise. Great articles on the metabolism boost from weights. Most women will not gain a lot of muscle from lifting heavy. It is just the way they are made.
As for pink 100+ lb dumbells, there is always spray paint. emoticon

emoticon Thank You, Trinity!! I read the articles, and I think I understand that what I need to do is Heavy Lifting. I am not sure why my Body Fat and Inches have Gone Up in the 3 months I have been doing this. The inches could be because I was measured by a Different Trainer?

However, I knew of a Lady who got too big for her liking and reduced weights for a longer workout and higher reps so she could fit back into size 6 clothes, which will burn both fat and muscle. It really depends where we are at and what our goals are to determine our plan. We want to build muscle, so we need to lift heavy in the range of 8 to 12 reps.

emoticon I just read a Daily Spark Article - "20 Ways To Burn More Fat" - that recommended adding "Light Weights" to your workouts in order to boost your metabolism.
This might be a Silly Question, but wouldn't you get a Metabolism Boost from Lifting Heavy Weights, too? I have to admit I enjoy Lifting More weight as I get Stronger. My Goal is to eventually be Lifting/Pulling My own Body Weight and doing Pull Ups.
emoticon I am working on accepting that Lifting Heavy might make me 'Gain' Weight and being OK with that as long as my Body Fat% is going down.

hi everyone. I'm new to the team. It's finally dawned on me that being ultra vigilant with calorie counting isn't going to help me reduce my BF by 4% and I need to get off my butt and do strength training. This is only day 2.

Yes! You are right! I guess I should have said instead of abandoning exercise all together, that I could have done exercises that would not have effected my injury. When I sprainged my ankle, I could have done seated presses or something like that. I just gave up on it all together. I guess I am trying to change my attitude towards exercise and at least do something that I can do, because I learned that by not doing anything, took me even further away from feeling physicaly and mental better.

It is always a good idea to heal before you do serious exercise, but make sure you check with your doctor on what you can do. There are lots of opportunities for physical activity that may not be stressful on some injuries. Good to have you both on the team.

I am coming back to from taking some time off of training from injuries-bad mistake I just made my goals and wrote them on my blog. I think writing them on my blog with monthly progress reports will really help me get and stay on track. This is one way I can kick my own butt! I am sick of the weight and not having the physique I want. So, I am with you KATPAINE!

Welcome KATPAINE. I really vary my workouts. Today I did upper body on the circuit machines using a pyramid style lift (keep upping the weight and lowering the reps). I occasionally do the same for lower body. I also do P90X and core training. If I can get to a gym with free weights I will use them as well. I have done Cross Fit and do use some of the exercises on my own. I occasionally do Yoga. For cardio it varies between elliptical, treadmill, and running.

i did "Fitness Blender" Bodybuilding Leg Workout for Mass Dumbbell Mass Workout for Lower Body this morning. no injuries in lower body. was looking for a lower body dumbbell routine and found one that is suited to me right now. can't wait until upper body is healed so i can go up in weight again!!!

i subscribed to Al Kavadlo. love his stuff too. i also subscribed to ShaQxBB body building motivation. when i lived in KC MO in the early 90's, i was trained by a bunch of guys who competed and other who were professional wrestlers. Loved it. i'm so out of shape from several injuries, that i'm not training hard right now. the injuries were not from training. anyway, i'm on my way back!
