There are 3 simple steps to take after a bike crash. Remember it is not if but when you crash. Stay calm but act quickly and keep in mind these 3 tips.
1. Clear the Road: If the cyclist can walk, help them move away from traffic and clear bike and belongings off the road. If the cyclist is unconscious, block traffic and dial 911, perhaps flag down a vehicle for help?
2. Ask Questions: Examine the rider from head to toe and ask...Can you see me, anything blurry, follow my fingers, hurt with a deep breath, short of breath, abdominal pain, equal and reactive pupils, can you follow directions....etc. Injured riders often become very talkative and apologetic. Talk to them, reassure them, keep asking them questions and get help if needed.
3. Check the Helmet: If the helmet shows even tiny cracks or dents, the victim should be seen by a doctor. Better to suspect a head injury and transport for medical attention than to miss something and risk further damage.
