How long have you been natural? I'm just beginning my transition.

Why did you decide to go natural? I've been "deciding" for a few years! My daughter has been trying to get me to transition for a very long time. Now that I'm older, I do not want to subject my hair to the brutal punishment of relaxing my hair anymore. My hair also sheds a lot! Enough so that my son asked if I had cancer!

Are you locking your hair? I'm not really sure if I will lock my hair.

What current length are you at now? shoulder length

What are your length goals? To remain the same

Have you found a regimen that works for you? No, not yet

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? Still learning

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? Protective styling

How long have you been natural? December 2007

Why did you decide to go natural? Wasn't trying to go natural at the time. I cut all my hair off because I wanted to wear a fade look as a style. As my hair started to grow in I liked the way it looked and simply never relaxed it again.

Are you locking your hair? Yep. Started in July 2013. Sometimes I cover them in yarn braids though. It helps while they grow out

What current length are you at now? A stretched loc reaches my nose tip and the top of my back
What are your length goals? Let them grow loll

Have you found a regimen that works for you? Yes I don't like the look of neat twisted locs on myself so I don't twist. I just wash and let them grow how they want. Same when I cover them in yarn braids. I just wash, oil, no twisting.

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? I grows fast. Because I know my hair grows so fast I have been able to cut and style in any way I please since going natural. When my hair was relaxed it always seemed to never be able to grow past a certain length.

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? Before locking I would just go with the flow. No real protective styling I just did what I liked or what I thought was cute n

Not exactly sure how long; almost two years.

I decided to go natural at first because my husband was tired of my wigs. Now I am happy I did.

I do no have locs; my hair is mostly two strand or comb twist. I prefer two strand in different styles. My favorite is a mohawk hair style.

My length is almost to my shoulders at the end of my neck. I intend to let it continue to grow only clipping the ends occasionally.

I use olive oil or a natural moisturizer every few days. I cannot do my own hair. I have a friend who is a stylist and she takes care of my hair at least once or twice a month.

I actually like the style the older it gets. I just start flaking after about 3 weeks. I do love my hair; only wish I could style it myself.

PS: I do miss my wigs at times

I have been natural for about 7 years

I decided to go natural because I was tired of all the hair drama

My hair is locked Sister Locs and I love them! I have had my locs less than two years. I wore a short afro before.

My hair lays on my neck . I plan to grow it as long as its not too heavy. I can put it up in a ponytail and look cute

I usually just use water with a few drops of oil but on occasion my loctian will use other products

I ve learned that I love my hair ! not sure what protective styles are but I just let my hair flow.

How long have you been natural?
Since 2003

Why did you decide to go natural?
I have never been one to fool with my hair nor desire to spend HOURS in a salon to get my hair done.

Are you locking your hair?
YES!!!! I am on my 3rd set..1st was 2st by a loctian, 2nd was interlocked by a loctian and (hopefully) the final set, by my lil ole hands ;-)

What current length are you at now?
Past my ears but not to the shoulders.

What are your length goals?
I would like to be able to put my locs in a ponytail, I don't really focus on length.

Have you found a regimen that works for you?
Kinda. I rotate between oils and water soluble butters. I try to use very few products and I shy away from products that have ingredients that are not good for my hair, like sulfates, phlates and parabens.

What is your current regimen?
Rinse w/water every morning, wash 1x week (when not swimming), apply oils and sometimes braidouts.

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair?
That it can only continue to amaze me with its' beauty.

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow?
Just go with the flow.

How long have you been natural? 11 months since big chop- 1 yr. 4 mos. since last relaxer

Why did you decide to go natural? had been relaxed for nearly 40 yrs, scalp and hair was unhealthy, heard about relaxers poss. causing fibroids in Afro Amer. women

Are you locking your hair? No

What current length are you at now? About 6-7 inches

What are your length goals? Shoulder length by Nov. 2014

Have you found a regimen that works for you? Yes, I think so. Still learning, but my hair & scalp seem to be doing well.

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? So much...PH balance, I'm protein sensitive, I have low porosity hair, that is "O" and fine low density. I now know what to put on my hair and how to handle it. Although I am sure there's plenty more to learn

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? Protective Styling most of the time with wigs. I want to start wearing my hair out more, but I need length to do most styles I like. Right now on the weekends I wear my hair in an afro puff. Experimenting with the fro,

Hi Everyone,
My name is Jen and I am 38 yrs old. I am married and we have 5 children.

How long have you been natural? I put the last chemical relaxer in my hair on 12/24/2011

Why did you decide to go natural? I have been noticing for years that the relaxers were weakening and killing my hair. I now have very thin and weak hair. I decided to stop relaxing to allow my hair to breathe when I ran into CurlyNikki.com and realized I wasn't alone.

Are you locking your hair? No

What current length are you at now? My hair was down my back, but I did the "Big Chop" 2 weeks ago and now it's a little under my ears.

What are your length goals? I only plan on cutting to get rid of my relaxer. When it's completely gone, I will allow my hair to grow as much as possible.

Have you found a regimen that works for you? Not yet. I did start Hennaing and really love that.

What is your current regimen? Very eclectic. Still trying to find what works with my hair.

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? Protein and Moisture.

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? Protective Styling

How long have you been natural? since October 2001
Why did you decide to go natural? It just seemed "right". (No other ethnic group that I saw spent time or money on chemicals and other processes to change their hair!)
Are you locking your hair? Yep!
What current length are you at now? My hair reached below my hips. I cut it back to chin length two years ago. It is now down to my breasts.
What are your length goals? Not much longer. I prefer it shorter.
Have you found a regimen that works for you? Yes.
What is your current regimen? Keeping it simple. Shampoo, condition, jojoba oil.
What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? To let it be--and do it's own thing naturaly; not to have preconceived notions of how my locs should be and not to compare mine with anyone else's. Also great life lessons!
Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? Not sure what protective styling is. I care for my locs and don't let them just go wild---but I do as little as possible.

How long have you been natural?
First BC was 98' then 99' and last one 05'

Why did you decide to go natural?
My best hair days as a little girl before I got "treated" was getting my natural hair braided with beads and foil on the ends. After being "treated," I never could do anything with my permed hair. Middle and high school days were hell; sadly. I got to college and said to hell with it all. It was the best decision I've made yet.

Are you locking your hair?
No, I did but cut them in 05'

What current length are you at now?
I have no idea (~_^)

What are your length goals?
I feel as though my hair is not thick enough but I chop that to genetics so I do not think I can change that. I am not sure if length is a goal although I would love a lot of hair. I pretty much want it to be healthy. To me healthy = length.

Have you found a regimen that works for you? Yes

What is your current regimen?
1) I co-wash at least 2x a week and add my leave-in conditioner mix.
2) I do a full out wash (hot oil treatment, shampoo, conditioner, deep-conditioner and leave-conditioner set) once a month.
3) I seal my ends with moisture every night before bed.
4) I am a CURLBOX subscriber and love some their products. I have products I will never stop using but am always open to trying some new things on my hair.

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair?
It will tell me when it is unhealthy or does not like something I am doing to it whether it is something I ate/didn't eat/drink or a product applied to it.

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow?
Yes, I try my hardest to keep it protected! Because I love my hair so much, I would play in it all day so protective styling is the only way to keep my hands out of it. You know a SISTAH ain't go mess up her fresh hair-do!

I can simplify my life and lighten my burdens by deciding realistically what I want to do and what I have time to do. (~_^)

How long have you been natural: Two Years

Why did you decide to go natural? I was tired of perming my hair and wanted a chemical free altrenative.

Are you locking your hair? No

What current length are you at now? Right at my shoulders.

What are your length goals? As long as it will grow and is still healthy and manageable!

Have you found a regimen that works for you? Yes.

What is your current regimen? I opted to press my hair every 3-4 weeks. I use Carol's Daughter products almost exclusively. I love the hair butter and oils to keep my hair shiny, healthy and moisturized.

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? It has grown faster without chemicals and looks so much more shiny without a perm!

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? I would like to try a weave, but I am apprehensive about what my natural hair will look like once I take the weave out. I'm happy with my hair's health and don't want to do anything to damage it. Since I work out 4-5 times a week, braids or a weave would help but I'm able to manage without them.

How long have you been natural? Since October 2001 - almost 11 years
Why did you decide to go natural? I prefer natural in ALL things. Tired of trying to make my hair do what it was never intended to do. Wanted to embrace my own beauty.
Are you locking your hair? yes
What current length are you at now? locs were down to my hips, cut them 2 yrs ago, now back to my shoulder.
What are your length goals? I prefer them shoulder length or shorter
Have you found a regimen that works for you? my locs don't require much of a regimen--just basic cleanliness and taking care of my scalp
What is your current regimen? regular shampoos by a professional loctitian
What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? it's beautiful just as it is--and completely unique--just as I am
Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? I don't know what protective styling is. I don't consider my locs a "style"--

How long have you been natural?
It's been so long I honestly can't remember. I believe it's been more than 20 years.

Why did you decide to go natural?
When the beautiful curly perm I had began to turn on me, my beautician and I decided that my body would no longer tolerate any kind of chemicals

Are you locking your hair? - Yes

What current length are you at now? - It's about shoulder length now. It was half way down my back, but I cut them back.

What are your length goals? - I don't really have a length goal. My hair has always grown long if I let it. Tha's probably why I've never had a problem with cutting it.

Have you found a regimen that works for you? - My regimen is simple.

What is your current regimen? - I visit my loctician every 4-6 weeks for shampoo, condition, color etc. In bwtween visits to the loctician, I shampoo and condition at home about every 3 weeks. I regulary massage my scalp and I use shea butter, olive oil (infused with tea tree and peppermint oils) to oil and moisturize my scalp and hair.

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? - I cannot tolerate gels at all - my locs are maintained with just shea butter and olive oil.

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? - I go with the flow.

How long have you been natural? - I have been relaxer free for 13 months. Still have about two inches of relaxed ends, but plan to cut them in December.

Why did you decide to go natural? - Different styling option, frustration with salons.

Are you locking your hair? - No.

What current length are you at now? - About 3.5 inches of natural hair, 2 inches of soon to be clipped relaxed hair.

What are your length goals? - mid back length when stretched.

Have you found a regimen that works for you? - I'm getting there. I'm constantly trying to simplify things.

What is your current regimen?
Weekly routine:
Wash with any sulfate shampoo.
Condition with Tresemme naturals.
Deep condition with either Aussie 3 minute miracle (protein free) or Redken Heavy Cream(light protein)
Kinky Curly Knot Today mixed with coconut oil as a leave-in.
SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque as a moisturizer.

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair?

I've found that I must use a shampoo containing sulfates to thoroughly cleanse my scalp and that my hair tolerates protein well in small amounts. I've slowly lost the need to obsess over growth like in the beginning of my transition and am focusing more on being gentle and retaining length.

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow?

My current style of choice is a no heat rollerset. After washing and conditioning, I apply the leave-in and moisturizer mentioned above and set my hair on small perm rods. I leave the rods in overnight, remove them in the morning, separate the curls and go. The style last 2-4 days depending on how much I work out. If I need to re-do before wash day, I just spritz the hair with a spray bottle to rewet it. Photo can be found in the profile pic on my Spark page.

I looove to talk hair so feel free to leave me a msg on my page or inbox me!

1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN NATURAL? Loc'd from 1997 to present.

2. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO NATURAL? I got tired of sitting in the salon ALL day.

3. ARE YOU LOCKING YOUR HAIR? No, Big Chopped March 2011

4. WHAT CURRENT LENGTH ARE YOU AT NOW? My TWA is about 5 inches (pulled).

5. WHAT ARE YOUR LENGTH GOALS? At least shoulder length … enough to put in a bun

6. HAVE YOU FOUND A REGIMEN THAT WORKS FOR YOU? Not yet, still a work in progress and feeling my way. Currently, it wash bi-weekly.

7. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT REGIMEN? When I first BC'd I did not wash or co-wash daily, wore a wig because I was not sure what to do with my hair. I did attempt to co-wash daily, but it was not good to do, nor did I have time for that. With the help of youtube, I think I'm finally finding my way.

a) I shampoo every other week and twist. Before shampooing, I apply a conditioner mixed with a few drops of rosemary oil, cover with a cap for heating effect for at least 30 minutes to whenever I stop doing what I'm doing, and then I rinse and apply a little shampoo. My current conditioner of choice is Herbal Essences' Hello Hydration. My shampoo is Suave Almond & Shea (I wish I'd seen the shampoo with the Rosemary – next time). I have the Suave conditional too, but I find the HEHH works better. The only time I detangle is when I condition my hair, and I use my hands/fingers instead of a comb. MY TWIST REGIMENT – I use a mixture of Eco Styler Gel, Roots of Nature Whipped Coil Cream, Castor Oil and Olive Oil, and apply small amounts as I twist.

b) Daily, upon waking I spritz my hair/scalp with water that is mixed rosemary oil. (Think I'll use peppermint oil next time).

c) Apply olive oil or (hair growth mixture of almond oil, vitamin E oil, rosemary oil and peppermint) around my hairline before putting on my wig cap and wig. (From wearing the locs and them becoming heavy, I have a few spots at the top of my scalp. I found the above mixture online – massaged in once daily, it is supposed to help stipulate hair growth). I also like it around my hair hairline, as the wig cap tends to pull moisture away

d) When I return home, I spritz again after removing the wig. This feels sooo good, especially if it was a "hot" day … it's nice, cool and refreshing to my scalp. I also find the spritzting just as effective as co-washing. It's been said that water is our friend, but co-washing daily is counter-productive for me.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT YOUR HAIR? I need to tend to it daily, especially my scalp. Working on getting DH to massage my scalp for me. It feels so much better when someone else does it.

ARE YOU BIG ON PROTECTIVE STYLING OR DO YOU JUST GO WITH THE FLOW? I attempted to go with the flow, but my hair was not growing, so I started protective styling with 2-strand twist, and then wear a wig. On weekends, I try to take a break and not wear wig.

How long have you been natural? I have been natural about 2 1/2 years.

Why did you decide to go natural? Because I tired of perms and was never able to grow my hair past shoulder length due to damage and breakage caused by perms.

Are you locking your hair? No.

What current length are you at now? The longest part of my hair (middle to back of head) is arm pit length

What are your length goals? I would love to one day reach mid back length.

Have you found a regimen that works for you? I am still workin on it and tweaking it.

What is your current regimen?
Wash/Condition hair every 7-10 days
Deep Condition every 2-3 weeks
Protective style 80% of the time
No Heat
No Chemicals
Low Manipulation Styles

What is the most important thing you have learned about your hair? That it is not as unmanageable as I used to think; also that my hair does not like too much protein and needs lots of moisture.

Are you big on protective styling or do you just go with the flow? Yes and no. Lately I have been doing a lot of wash n gos, but yes I think protective styling is important to maintain length.
