Completed EMT-B recently. Looking for work as an EMT. Applying to the medic program this fall.

I was accepted to the medic program this past spring but turned it down to continue on the RN path but I have since decided to go the medic route.

My 20 year old daughter was a EMT until she joined the Army. She wanted to be a field medic, however because she is female,it was almost impossible to find an opening in any of the branches. After a year and a half. She went into the army as a helicopter mechanic. So far she loves it.When she completes her duty, she wants to work on life flight helicopters as a para medic. My bumper sticker-EMT daughter Army proud!I'm a proud mama as you can see. emoticon

I am a traveling resthome helper- this means I go with a work PDA and can be called to alarms.. All our clients live in own homes- and are equiped with necklace or wrist alarms..
My average day at work can be 8 up to 16 kms of walking.. I work in the middle of a city, the roads are narrow, old block have no elevators and it is faster to get around by feet..
I never know what I will find when I get a alarm call. Sometimes I am the first to phone a ambulance for someone whom may be in alot of trouble..
Our clients come home earlier from hospital, they are more sick- many are sent home to die..
I like to think efter being in this industry so many years people feel safe in my hands..
Sometimes I can have clients for many years, others are loving care.. Then there is our alcohol group whom need alot of understanding when everything goes to crap for them... No two days are ever the same.. The work is hard, but I would not change it for the world..

I am Pam I am a retired Police Officer of 21 years. I was also on a volunteer Fire Dept for 9 years just retired there also. Worked for Superior Ambulance on a rig for 3 years. I was then offered a job as an EMT and Medical Assistant at a Lowes Distribution Center with a nurse practitioner for more money. I am thinking about going back to fire again even though I am getting older...I miss it... emoticon

Hi, I'm Rebecca too. Haven't sparked for a lot of months. Lots of changes going on with me. I'm an EMT-I on an all-volunteer squad in Somerset, OH, though we have just a handful of our squad that really runs. We have three trucks, a ATV-type thing to rescue pts. and a rescue truck. We handled 535 runs last year if that's any indication of how busy we are. I'm trying to get back into getting my weight under control again. I'm good at making good food choices, but not controlling my portions. I go through times, I'm famished and others I could care less if I eat. I like to exercise on my Tony Little Gazelle and swim, weather permitting.

Hey guys!! I updated my Sparkpage with recent pics, new info, etc. I am turning my disappointment in taking 8-9 months to lose only 16 pounds into motivation for a total transformation. Project Lindsay-Reinvention is underway! All your support would be greatly appreciated! Best wishes, my rescuer loves! :-)

Hi! I'm Rebecca . . . and I'm just a lowly dispatcher . . . just kidding, I'm not lowly! Well, I am short. Anyway, I digress! I Dispatch for Southern Yavapai FD in Arizona and my hubby is Capitan of the department and is an EMT-B with all sorts of certs that he demands frames for. We are an all volunteer department and amazingly have lots of great people that volunteer their time and energy for dispatching, responding to calls, landing helicopters, meeting ambulances (we're a little on the rural side), and running the board. My sister-in-law has been a great grant writer and has gotten us two new trucks in the past 4 years and a new/used water tender as well.

Anyway, I'm mommy to one beautiful daughter who is the light of our lives and wife to my brave firefighter who scares me to death by going into burning buildings but I'll trust in his knowledge and hope he's safe. Thankfully, structure fires are few and far between.

Hi I am Erin and I am an EMT-B riding with a vol squad in NJ. We run about 1425 calls a year (nights and weekends, days are paid). I have been on this squad for four years and am currently president. I am married to a police officer who is a vol EMT-B and FF as well.

I love being an EMT and would love to become a paramedic or nurse, financially we just can't swing it though.

I'm an EMT-I on a volunteer squad in Somerset, OH, population, about 1500. We get around 550 runs/year. Also active in my church. Married 21 years this year. Born in California, raised in Hawaii (24 years), married to a local boy from Hawaii, then lived in Oregon 12 years. We have three kids, ages 23, 21 and 17 and one grandaughter, age 2. I don't work a regular job (except in a little village 25 miles south called Corning) when my husband's working away, but that's just when I sign up to do it. Graduated from Chaminade University degree in Criminal Justice 1991 and then University of Hawaii B.A. in Health Administration in 1992. I love to travel, swim, walk, crochet (simple stuff) and eat, which is what brought me to Spark People to help me find something to do besides that last hobby I listed.

Hi! I'm Angie and my DH has been a Volunteer FF for 15 years now (3rd generation). I tried to become a member of his dept. in July but they wouldn't let me on; because I'm a woman. So in Nov. I started going to meetings at our neighboring townships fire dept and on Dec. 5 I was officially voted on as a probie for 120 days, after which, I will be voted on as a full member with pager and gear. I will be taking the Indiana State Manditory class in early 2008 and FF I&II in Nov. After my FF training I will be taking the EMT class.
Update:
I became a Certified Fire Investigator in 2009 and joined our county's Fire Investigation taskforce. I became an EMT-B in March 2010 and I also became a certified Fire Instructor I in April of 2010.

I used to work in a Mission Hospital in the bush. Was in charge of the 'ambulance' (a simple Landrover). Didn't get many calls, but when someone knocked at your door to tell you that there is a patient somewhere you'd have to drive through some pretty rough terrain to whichever village or lonely manyatta (Local huts) the patient was and never knew what to expect.
Later I did Road and Air Rescues in Nairobi for a local HMO. Road Rescues were no fun, since a) people called you for coughs & colds, sicne they did not know how to use the services and b) you were always called out during rush hour and most drivers don't know what to do when an ambulance comes with sirenes blaring, or they suspect you want to go home quickly.... Air rescues were fun so since mostly you went to pick a stabilized patient from a small Hospital and mostly you took off in the late afternoon and flying over Africa in the late afternoon is so beautiful.
Gosh this sounds negative...
No I did love my job, only had its down sides.
Currently am working as a sChool Nurse and that has a lot of reue work involved as well. Tomorrow I have to cover a football tournament. But at least I do not have to work shifts anymore.

Hi, I'm new to this site and group. I am a full time paramedic for the city of Calgary (Alberta, Canada). I've been working in EMS since 96 and I love my job. I have also worked as a full time Medic fire fighter and been on several Volunteer fire departments as well. I'm here for support in dropping a few pounds, packed on some weight this past few months, while I was off work recovering from surgery.

I think I'll keep this short as it is almost midnight and I have to go back to work in the morning. Hope you all have a great day!

I recently became an EMT-B in Indiana (April/May of this year), and I've been working for a private service for about two months. I'm currently finishing out my prerequisites for the paramedic science program at IUPUI, which I hope to start in the spring. I would also like to join one of the fire departments in the area either as a firefighter/medic or civilian EMS.

This has been the perfect career choice for me, and I couldn't be happier with my decision to do it.

Hi

I'm a volunteer member of a USAR response team (structural collapse mostly) in New Zealand. General Rescue and High Angle Responder level certs. Because we're there for our city council in the case of major structural collapse (eg earthquake), we rarely get any kind of actual callouts, so we just train weekly for something that may never happen. We have been used on a couple of Land SAR searches as assistance.

I have always held mucho respect for "real" rescuers like fire and ambulance crews. You guys rock! I hope you don't mind if I come here and play with you. ;)

Good Afternoon to All -- I'm a K9 handler with a small volunteer search & rescue team here in central Indiana. My K9 partner is a 6-year old, female, yellow lab; trained & certified in wilderness searching (she's a live-find dog). Just found SP a week or so ago, and really love the tracking tools and support from other members. Later, Greg & K9 Tala (she could stand to lose a few pounds also)

Hey all,

I've been an EMT since 1990, started volunteer, also did part-time paid. Have held just about every title in several vollie squads - secretary, president, captain, chief, etc.

I've been a police officer for 7 years. I don't really run with the squad anymore, but have maintained my EMT as it comes in handy with work, even though our squad has quick response times.

It's bad when your Virtual Model can't compute the "skinny clothes" onto your before picture!! LOL!!

I am a volunteer firefighter with my FFI, FFII and Hazmat Ops certifications. I also have my EVOC I, II and III certs. Plus, I am an EMT-B, which I have to renew this fall.

I went to the same fire academy as the paid staff and the first question the recruits were asked by the instructors was, "What's the difference between a volunteer and a paid firefighter?"

One paid guy raised his hand and said, in all seriousness, "Paid firefighters are professionals."

To which the instructor said, "Wrong. All firefighters are professionals. The only difference between a paid firefighter and a volunteer firefighter is that a paid firefighter gets a paycheck."

Let's see...I'm new
-Recently voted as full-status active volunteer firefigher.
-Just started my EMT-B training, will test out in May, just started my 6 months' probation on the ambulance side. I run a 12-hour duty section once a week, plus respond when needed other days.
-Received operations level hazmat certification, may go for technician level depending on when the class is held. (I'm already an absentee member of my family with EMT class and various meetings. Its only 60 hours so I may suck it up and go.)

If you think of this world as a place intended simply for our happiness, you will find it quite intolerable. Think of it as a place of training and correction and its not so bad.
