LAST TOM was October 17, 2013. I know that I have been quite lucky... the hot flashes have been minimal, compared with my poor mom. I think the toughest part is the fluid retention, and perhaps mood swings. I guess at this point, I am just wanting to get it overwith and become menupausal.

One entire month! Now I have 11 months left to go. LOL

First time it's been this long; and feeling hormonally yucky.

Went 3 month then 3 months again before started last week of July into /1st week of August and now another tom this week. Both of these last ones have been EXTREMELY heavy so if have this again in a short amount of time will have to call the doc in case there is an issue. I have not had any "female" problems at all in my life so these perimenopause issues have been very challenging.

I am in my 4th year with hot flashes and night sweats. Haven't worn sleeves since it started. tom was every 3 months first year, then 6 months and then every month second year, then every 6 months last year and now holding breath as 9/1/13 will be one year. Thinking hot flashes will diminish slowly, hoping. But so looking forward to no more birth control. Other than flashes and weight gain in tummy, no other symptoms. Now hoping to get back on track and re-lose those pesky 15 that reappeared and then move into next phase.

So far, the furthest apart mine have gotten is maybe 4 months. I just had one last week and I'm really not sure when the prior one was.

Its been a while since I've had more than one in a month but when I did I was definitely wiped out. It was really that feeling, more than being worried that anything was wrong, that made me go to the doctor and get tests to make sure it was perimenopause.

White noise helps me to sleep. This time of year I've got a fan going constantly and that helps a lot. When its not the fan, I turn the radio on just loud enough to have the low noise in the background. I still wouldn't say that I sleep well, but it does help.

A few months ago I moved into a basement apartment. If I don't turn lights on, its perpetually dusk or pitch black down here, depending on the weather and time of day. I didn't think that I was tired, until I moved here. Now that its dark and if I don't set the alarm there are days when I'll go to bed at 10 pm and sleep until 11 am, its made it really obvious how poorly I'm sleeping. (of course, sleep is a whole other topic...)

Hi BETMET1

emoticon I don't experience TOM's like that emoticon

I DO however have nights like you describe..............I hate 'em emoticon
Another member here posted 16 signs you are in peri and included on that list is sleep difficults..
I am tired all the time and do take naps though some people say that isn't good sleep hygiene but if I don't take naps I am cranky (already deal with mood swings so don't want to make things worse....LOL). My fatigue is so extreme that daily tasks are a chore, but I try to emoticon

HI TERACT10!

I have to say emoticon WOW! I thought once you went a yr. without a TOM that you didn't get anymore symptoms emoticon I have been in peri I think about a yr. now dealing with hot flashes and fatigue and newly have water retention, etc. Lately I have been very moody too emoticon

Ok, so today I have something that resembles TOM but so light don't know if I can count it emoticon
Maybe if it continues (?)

Congratulations! I'm counting the "years" before I can say I'm in post menopause. The rate I'm going, I'll be in peri-menopause for the whole 10 years! It's been 3 so far! Anytime it wants to stop is fine with me! LOL

This morning my poor husband went running out of the house. All he did was say good morning & I felt like smacking him in the head with a frying pan. Poor man. I think I love him more for putting up with my mood swings.

Happy day to everyone!

Every day I wake up on this side of the dirt is a good day!

HI all
My sister and I have been trading symptoms for about a year now...(1.5 yrs apart in age, I just turned 50)...she went the every 20 days route and my body just plain stopped...she ended up getting D&C after her blood counts would not come back up from the excess bleeding, even on vitamins. I get those monthly aches (and mood and fatigue and cravings and water weight...ugh) but then nothing happens. Now I am a year out from my last TOM, my sister is jealous, but I get sweats still and wake up at 2am wide awake then drag the rest of the day...I hope that part will stop soon!
Glad to find this group!

I am soooo happy to know someone else is dealing with this symptom too! emoticon emoticon I have never tried peppermint tea but willing to give it a shot! WELL, I try eating a few crackers and eat tums like candy sometimes emoticon I take Prilosec but Sub Doc said not managing my Acid reflux (Do you deal with that issue?) so going to try Nexium and if that doesn't help will have upper GI scope.......I wrote you another note under High Estrogen topic......I think that covers it emoticon
This is all new to me with peri symptoms.

Hi TINKKY!

emoticon emoticon
My first missed TOM was this yr. March 30th then whole month of April went by with nothing so called Doc in Middle of May then I started before I went to appointment emoticon So Now I had my TOM at around end of May and still waiting now for it to start again........Well, I wouldn't miss it if it never started again emoticon
I have been dealing with Hot flashes(embers? emoticon ) for about a yr. I went through checklist on a thread about 16 symptoms to know if you're in peri-menopause and I have 12 out of 16 right now! Recently I carry a piece of paper to fan myself as needed emoticon and moody a lot lately! Did you ever experience feeling sick/nauseous during peri or meno?

Again, CONGRATS!

Sherry--Perimeno can last several years, as it did with me, but each person is different.

It is official, after my appointment at the ob/gy she says I'm in post menopause as it has been more than a year since my last period, and I don't miss it!! Yahoo!! but she did warn me that if some spotting should happen(heaven forbid) that I should give her a call.]

Well I'm confused more than ever now I been going through peri menopause over a year now and I'm missing the understanding of how long it takes to go from peri to menopause how long it takes because I think I been going through it about 2-3 years I had a tubal in 2006 my dr. Said it threw me into early menopause but now I'm not so sure if she knew what she talking about it don't know she said it was in my test results but the odd thing is my hormones was in balance according to her test results but said I was in early peri menopause so I don't know what to think anymore

I do the best I can from now on my life is mine I want to be a healthy nana I can only control that I'm back And I'm doing the done girl and I am going to be a turbo fire hottie with the blazing blue team i am a positive thoghtful person who cares about others And my family sherry wilson

VK: Nope. TOMS arrive all over the place. It's normal as for as unbalanced hormones go.

PATRICE: As for as I know, one doesn't need to ovulate to have a TOM.

I'm a little confused because mother nature has decided to play with my system. My OBGYN confirmed that I was in perimenopause and I've been praying for the day that my cycle would get the message and stop.

Here's my predicament: I've had 3 periods in 40 days. They've started exactly 20 days apart. The last one was only light spotting....for now.

What gives? I thought they were supposed to stop not start?

Every day I wake up on this side of the dirt is a good day!

I've been charting my cycles since 2009 when they started becoming irregular. Prior to that, like many of you, they were like clockwork.

The past year, periods have been coming every two or three months, and I just keep shrugging when they arrive, wondering when the eggs will run out! Started again on Friday.

(I'm 54.5 and as long as my libido hangs in here, am ready for the bleeding to stop any time!)

Well, I went the longest I've ever done since I was a teenager.... 3 weeks! I think it was due to all the stress involved in FIL's surgery. Kept praying, tho that TOM wouldn't arrive. DRATS!

Heard back from my PA--she said all blood work was acceptable, except for the Estrogen level-still at 320, where 140 is considered in menopause....now what??? I have to make an appt with the gyno for my yearly----are there any pills to take, or surgery, or anything?

I'm 51 & still on a "regular" 26-27 cycle.

But....I'm thinking that the estrogen needed to keep this going is a GOOD thing (as annoying as TOM is!)

QUOTE:
"Estrogen is important to a woman’s health beyond just how it relates to her reproductive cycle. Although it can cause women to retain fluid, and early exposure through early menses can increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer, this hormone has significant benefits. It can contribute to increasing high density lipoprotein (HDL), which is considered the “good” cholesterol, and lower the low density lipoprotein (LDL), which is the “bad” cholesterol.

After menopause, women experience a reduction in estrogen. This can lead to vaginal dryness, memory problems, hot flashes, fatigue, irritability and possibly one of the most devastating problems, a decrease in bone density."

I'm sherry Wilson I been going through peri menopause for about a 3 years now. Ok sometime I cycle every 2 weeks then late or early the next cycle then it will be ok for a month or two but when I have the cycles that every 2 weeks I know ahead of time cause I get my total body aches and pains I cramp up so bad it's unreal my legs my back my arms and knees and ankles even hurt I feel like someone's literally burning a whole through my stomach it hurts so bad I just feel bad it hurts to walk it hurts to sit or even lay down I have to go through all that for 2 straight weeks but the weirdest thing of all is I never really cramped up till I started having periods twice a month other than walking to school when ground was wet my feet got tingles on my toes like I was being stabbed with needles all throughout my feet too and bottom my whole foot i either cycle the 15 20 or the 10 usually 20 if a normal cycle the other 15, and 10 are days I usually do my 2 week cycles my dr. Told me to take black cohosh for it but I haven't any changes or being its I took it for 2 years still have same symptoms she claim I'm going to be sensitive to estrogen why she put me on it but she was checking my levels every 3 months in blood work I got to where I couldn't afford going to dr. Anymore cause the fact I was spending my checks on dr. Bills my blood test run me 400 bucks a pop and I only make 450 every 2 weeks so I was left with nothing after I paid for food and electric and water bill so I had to quit going I even tried to explain this to her about the why I couldn't afford it I'm taking at the time add-Ritalin,-anxiety-lexapro- anxiety-Valium- then vitamins a&d low on them plus omega 3 and fish oil and potassium all was low on vitamin d 3 I had none of it by the time I got my meds filled and I just couldn't afford anything else cause my husband check covered a car payment and the rest of the bills like loans and credit cards from when he was sick with heart disease and had to have open heart surgery 10 years ago it was crazy mad we had 3 young children the oldest was 8 at that time then 4 and a 2 year old right before Christmas was his surgery on the 21st of dec. we got home to Oklahoma Christmas Eve night his surgery was in Missouri St. Louis Barnes-Jewish hospital they was great glad he went there they fixed him up all natural used his own skin and stuff to cover his whole in his heart plus his cleft valve too nothing was inserted to have to have additional surgeries it all went well thank god I would recommend them to everyone

I do the best I can from now on my life is mine I want to be a healthy nana I can only control that I'm back And I'm doing the done girl and I am going to be a turbo fire hottie with the blazing blue team i am a positive thoghtful person who cares about others And my family sherry wilson

I honestly thought I was all done with TOM. I told the DR so, even. It had been over a year. BUT, what I think has REALLY been happening?? I think I have had very, very slight TOMs that are not much more than a tiny pink spot on the toilet tissue. Not kidding. That is IT. It, of course, means that it's very easy to miss.....since they are nearly non existent. How long this has been going on, Idk. I had a TOM about a month ago. It was slightly more than the one spot. It was maybe 2 or 3 spots. That's why I noticed it. Good grief is all I got to say. How is a person supposed to figure out the beginning and end to these things if they are going on in secret? I give up, actually. I'll mention it to the DR next appt and he'll make some comment of non concern....cause he is very mellow and doesn't worry about anything. Guess that means that I shouldn't worry, either.

I'm on day 51 of my current "cycle", with 2 negative pregnancy tests. This is my first missed TOM.

Hi everybody, I havent been on for awhile because my TOM went back to every 27 days until this month. I am now on my 50th day and no symptoms in sight. I dont think that I am done yet but it would be nice. My mom completed peri and menopause by age 52 so I hope I am that lucky. I am 46 now and started peri about 7 years ago. My TOMs have been random this year, whereas for the past 3 years they have started earlier or later but I never missed one. I am having some vicious mood swings and cant seem to speak to my husband in a normal tone. But they may be because I have no patience and things are getting on my nerves easily. Did anyone else have problems with this?

Just got home from having a visit with my GYN for my yearly exam. He took plenty of time to listen to how I've been feeling this past year, since he last saw me after the surgery he did.

I rattled off my last 9 months of *odd ball* spotting and the few months of no periods. He said since my spotting was only happening during period times, then it was perfectly normal. No reason for concern over the no *red* bleeds, as the brown was perfectly normal. He was still impressed with the *natural* way I was managing my body with the vitamins/foods I consume. Told him of how I increased my Magnesium dosage, to cease the sleeping issue I had been having during those 2 months of no periods and that it all went away.

He said my body, with all the brown, instead of red, and skipping months, was how a near menopausal woman's body *should* be acting like. There should be *less bleeding*..not more of it, if all is going well. And that my, still remaining symptom free, is a perfect example of how well my body is adapting to any hormonal fluxes, it is getting.

Told him of my 2 breast cysts that, suddenly, appeared at the time my periods skipped those 2 months. He asked if they went away..I said they did, by the 3rd month. He said that it's normal for cysts to show up, towards this end of approaching Menopause. The breast exam resulted in finding ZERO evidence of anymore of the cysts. So I'm relieved about that!

I asked him if a woman *had to* take hormone replacement? He said no. He did say they have their positives and their negatives..but it is not something any woman *has to* take, unless her symptoms are causing her discomfort. We talked about *systemic* Estrogen, just in case my insides ever showed signs of drying up(which I'm not). He knows I would prefer to stay as natural with all this as I can. I was just covering all my bases, ahead of time.

No reason to do any hormone testing, since it's only my periods being affected. He assured me the no *red* was perfectly fine. No need to worry about it. It's only if the spotting occurs *outside* the period time frame, that we would need to become concerned with. Luckily, this is not happening.

One thing, though, that is new for me, was that during the pelvic he discovered 3 tiny Fibroids. Since they are so small and that I have never had any such thing, ever, and I didn't have them a year ago, it's clear my body IS making some womanly changes. I will go back in 3 months to check on their growth (if any). Other than it hurting, while he was manipulating, both internally and on my lower tummy, I would never have even known I had those new little additions. He is not alarmed and doesn't expect them to cause me any form of issues, either in discomfort or by bleeding.

So, that's MY Menopausal update! emoticon

Ok, here it is 6 days later and still nothing more than the same brown. Today a *touch* of red appeared, very briefly, but then nothing more. Today is day 40 in the count. I want to schedule my pap, soon, but with this ??? period stuff, I'm not too sure on how to go about doing that. My doctor is the one who did my surgery, so my appointment is also for confirmation that all my female parts are still UP where they belong, so I'm a bit anxious about that.

Does anyone have a clue on how to schedule for a pap test, when you are unclear just WHEN or IF a period is gonna start?

After my 3 week explosion in May, and the biopsy in June, I have not had anything for 4 months. Trust me, I don't miss it at 55 1/2 yr. I'm also hoping the provera pill have helped. I go see the gyno at the end of October again.

Looks like I'm back to *normal*. AF arrived, this morning, on day 32. So it is looking like my, prior missed periods, may just have been due to my low body composition and not eating enough calories. Who knows?? emoticon

Still think I am heading into the change, though, as my periods have been changing *in time frame*, since well into last year. This was when my weight was still in the upper/middle 120's, so my body was not going through any major weight loss shocks. Being where I am at, now, though, *is* a slippery slope...110lbs...under 15% body fat...so my system has a far greater chance of being thrown out of balance, hormonally.

Only time will tell, I guess. emoticon

I'm going to be 51 in Nov. and am STILL having regular cycles.
-- However, this month made a more noticeable arrival after 6 months of minor to no premenstrual issues. (My "history" has been that all my perimenopausal symptoms ramp up and make 7 or so days of each month YUCK.) ...everything that was "less" is now "more."

Hello, I'm new to this team. I went to the dr. Aug 20 and he said I was in the early stages of menopause. My periods have been messed up, like I will be 3 days early or 3 days late, they could be heavy and last 3 days or 8 days, or be very light. My last TOM was aug 2. I was 16 days late, I just started this morning.

I'm glad I found this team. I really don't know what to expect. I have heard the horror stories!!

Have a great day!!

Hi ladies,

I'm not quite sure about this month, with me. Been having a bit more water retention, so I'm thinking a period *should* show itself. I'm heading into day 27, tomorrow, so if it is gonna happen, it has to be close. Part of me wants it to start..so this bloat feeling will leave..but another part of me just wants the count to keep on climbing.

Oh, the games we play! emoticon

I went 8 months then got my TOM last week. very light, definately not what I got the couple times last year. Hoping because it was light it might be the last. I am definately ready to be done with it.

according to my gyno, anytime you TOM is longer than 1 week, you should contact the dr, as there could be something serious going on. I had a 3 week period last August, then nothing for several months, this past May I went for 3 weeks again and I saw the dr. Tomorrow night I start Provera for a 10 pill regiment. I did this in JUly also. I go see the dr again in October to report my findings.

Here I was thinking I was almost one year down because I remember last year in October on vacation I started up, and I hadn't had TOM for oh, 3-4 months at that point, all last summer. Then this year, I've maybe only had 3 or 4 cycles scattered through the year I guess, since Oct. 2011. I thought it was less than that, but they were at least 2-3 months apart. Then week before last, blam! had another TOM. So now I've had to restart the clock!!

Oddly... seems like when I eat a lot of low quality (milk chocolate, sugar, milk, lactose, the whole junky 9 yards!) chocolate, I'll start again... but when I try to eat better and only have dark chocolate with very little sugar, I don't seem to start again. What's up with that?

Kits ~ It sure would make sense about the new medicine *maybe* kick starting you right back into having cycles, again. Who knows, maybe your body was so out of alignment, hormonally, that you were never, truly, heading into menopause??

That's kinda where I'm sitting with my own self..Did my periods stop, due to my getting too lean and thin?? Or did they stop, due to my getting that much closer to menopause??

It's amazing how we are both living within the same mystery...yet for two different reasons! emoticon

Shawfan ~ As you can see, many of us are on that same *mystery* boat, to who knows where, or even WHEN we'll hit land! emoticon

As for me...I'm just treating this time, as a counting challenge, for the most part. Luckily, I'm remaining symptom free, so it's not much of a struggle, thankfully. Sure hope it stays that way. I was expecting to have some major bleeding, since that seems to be the norm among many women, after skipping, but my flow, when it finally shows itself, still is light.

Hi all,
I don't exactly know how to feel right now. For the past 2 months my TOM has come and was very light, almost non existant. The last time I had a "normal" flow was back in May and then it was super heavy and lasted for 8 days, heavy all 8 days, so I guess it wasn't really normal. I've been expecting it to happen to me, so I shouldn't be surprised that it is starting, but I just don't know how to feel about it.
Part of me is thankful that I don't have the expense of buying protection every month, part of me is scared of the mood swings that come and go, along with my depression, I don't know which to blame!! lol I know anything can happen every month from here on, so I'm not holding my breath that my body is really starting the whole process until I've gone a year without.
How did everyone else cope with the start of your time? I know everyone is different, so what I'm experiencing is unique to me alone. I just want to hear how everyone else coped with it all. Am I making sense? I hope so.

I wouldn't kid about this, that is for sure! lol I'm wondering if it has to do with being put on thyroid hormones back in May. I feel myself again....young again....since being on it. Now if I could only lose the weight I gained because of a failing thyroid.

Do you know what my doctor told me back in December when it had been 4 months since my last one? She said....well, if you do happen to get pregnant now, you'd probably miscarry anyway at this age. Nice. Not something I would want to go through.

Hubby wasn't happy today when he heard the news...lol

You have got to be kidding me! No freakin' way!! emoticon

I read, though, that once you reach an *official* year, you can still be classified, by a doctor, as fully menopausal. I bet your body is just kicking out one last blast of hormones. You should just go in and get the tests done and see what kind of numbers you're sitting at. I'm thinking you made it.

That's a nasty trick to play! emoticon

Scroll down to my last post. Exactly one year ago today I posted that I was back to square one. Today, mother nature is having a good laugh because, as of today, after exactly one year, I'm again back to square one!

Looks like you're gonna make it, Doc! You're almost there!! emoticon

It's good you can share this kind of info with your mom. My mom has dementia, so her recollection on stuff, is not too vivid. But her & I are polar opposites, when it comes to health & healthy lifestyles. She smoked, never exercised, ate poorly, and never monitored her weight. So, sometimes, our mothers might not be the best gauge to go by. She did say hers happened at age 50, so I'm spot on there!

I've never been a heavy bleeder, so don't expect that to change. I was always about 28 days, most of my life, till last year. Then it played around going shorter, for awhile, then back to the 28, then off into the lower 30's. Now I'm just skipping months. I was expecting the heavy flows to happen, once I started back, but still they're exactly as light as they always have been.

Finally got to talk to my mom yesterday. She said that she started peri at age 42 and the whole process took her 10 years. She had the same things that I am going thru now. Her heavy periods lasted 2 years and then the light ones lasted 2 years. She said she spotted alittle in 2002 and that was it. She was 52 years old. She didnt start the sporadic and heavy periods until she was 48 years old. I am 46 years old, have been in peri for probably 6 years and started the sporadic, heavy ones 3 months ago. Probably the thing I hate the most is losing my hair. Hers thinned out alot too.
I am on Day 26, no signs! I know it will come but please not until next Thursday please!! emoticon

emoticon You're funny, Doc! emoticon

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya. At least you're consistent! It turned out that I wasn't all the way finished, this round, after all. It decided to keep going till this evening, but nothing major, just a normal (for me) amount. So I can't complain.

I am on day 25 with no symptoms! I just hope I make it till next Thursday cause I am going to the beach this weekend for my anniversary! I was very mean on Sunday but felt very lovey yesterday so I dont know if that is hormones or just the fact that nobody did anything to p*** me off! For our last 4 anniversaries I have had my TOM! I wish mine was like yours!

Well the mystery is solved about the slight bloat that was happening with me...AF showed up on the morning of the 46th day.

It was very uneventful, yet again, and already made its departure, just 24 hours later. It was light, no clotting, no cramps, no PMS.

I'm still baffled how, after 113 days since the last real flow (3 days) on April 29th, that there would be almost hardly any blood accumulation??

Oh well, onto the next count down I go...... emoticon
