About the Wii and the Wii Fit....I do not recommend it for a workout. It is too slow moving to really be considered a workout. If you are looking for something that is more as an low intensity fun way to get extra cardio then it is fine.
My suggestion to your orginial topic is break up the workout. If you watch TV. Workout during the commercials. For an hour long show that is about 15 mins right there. I also like to get in an additional 15 mins during lunch. I normally walk or use my resistant band. There is 30 mins right there.
For me personally it is a lot easier to get up a little earlier and get in a 30 min workout in the morning.
You said you have children....make it a family thing. My hubby and I walk for 30 mins after dinner with our dogs. It is something that we both really enjoy and plan to continue when we have children. You get it family time and you get in your workout. I don't know how old your children are, but you said something about playing with them on the floor, when was the last time you threw the ball around with them, or play chase and tag....that is also a workout. Just keep it up for 30 mins and you are good to go with a workout.
Just a thought.....
You can do anything you put your mind to!
I will be at 135 by January 17th 2010!

I found a great spin class and got myself a new pair of spin shoes. Changing up the exercise helps me. I also played some racquetball over Thanksgiving with my family and we have not done that in so long! It was fun and a great way to bring my teen and college kids together!

I can't remember if it was DailySpark or Health News that highlighted that the Wii Fit does not burn enough calaories to be considered an adequate workout. DVDs are great, and I love my stationary bike and free weights for TV time. Try Craigs list in your area - So Many people get rid of their barely used exercise equipment cheap (or even free - "curb alert"). You can also try breaking up your workouts - if you can't find a 30-45 min block, try grabbing 15 minutes a few times a day (may be easier with kids). Good luck everyone and Happy Thanksgiving.

Having almost fully recovered from a bad calf pull - I managed 4 miles two times this weekend at a good fast walking clip. Our weather was great and I didn't miss the opportunity. Free time on the long weekend means more exercise time - but the treadmill will be needed based on the weather forecast. Make it a great holiday - enjoy moderate portions - avoid the worst foods and be active.
Do well.

I have my elliptical that I use. I also use the WATP dvds. I have the Turbo Jam dvds but have yet to try to be able to stick to the program schedule with them long enough to get into it. I have the Wii with the Wii Fit and My Fitness coach games. I was really into them for while before but have fallen off track. I want to get the new Jillian Michaels game for the Wii but feel that I need to get more dedicated to working out again before spending the $40 for the game.

I have a variety of workout tapes (which include cardio, walking, strength training and yoga/tai chi) that I use on a daily basis (different type workouts vary my routine and keep me from getting bored doing the same thing). I also enjoy working out using the various videos offered on the SparkPeople site.
Taking my dog for daily walks is a great way for me to get exercise and spend time outdoors. I also have a Gazelle Air Walker that I enjoy using (I often spend time on it when watching the news or a favorite TV show).

I have NetFlix and they have tons of DVD's to choose from, get a few, decide what you like and then make an informed purchase.
Leslie Sansone "Walk Strong" is a 30 minute, 2 mile walk with ST. Her "Express" is 1 mile, then ST, 2 miles then a series of yoga like stretches - 60 minutes.

Any act often repeated soon forms a habit; a habit allowed, steadily gains in strength. At first it may be but as a spider's web, easily broken through, but if not resisted it soon binds us with chains of steel....Tryon Edwards
Take a look back to see how far you have come & how much you have changed your habits; not necessarily how far you have to go.
If it's economically feasable, I recommend a stationary bike or treadmill. You can watch whatever shows you like or listen to music, adding variety that videos simply cannot give you. This isn't to say that I don't like videos - I do! But, it seems like you can multi-task a little more with a cardio machine. I watch the morning news or a film for class, even listen to podcasts for school. Just a suggestion. :-) What's really important is that you find something that works for you.

I recommend video's well. They are inexpensive and there is a wide variety available. For a personal collection Leslie Sansone is a good place. But don't forget that SP has short (10 min) videos as well. You can also find free videos on YouTube and exercisetv.tv. If you have free video on demand you may have some there already. Personally, I get my videos from the library so I can check them out and be sure it is worth it before I buy.

I use a variety a DVDs and exercise TV. I do have an elliptical that I also use for the winter and when the weather is bad.
Try your local library to check out DVDs to see if you like them before you buy them.

I love the Walk away the pounds workouts, I do a 1 or 2 mile program (they are offered for free through my cable On Demand!) before strength training.
There are also tons of free videos on Sparkpeople, Hulu.com, and youtube that you can use if you have internet access.
I also like podcasts, there are lots of budding "fitness celebrities" that post step, strength, pilates, and yoga videos for free on itunes. There are also free Couch 2 5k podcasts for running, and Motiontraxx has created podcasts that sync up with Fitness Magazine workout programs (details are available free on their website, no need to subscribe to the monthlies!). If you get a lunch break, taking a brisk walk is helpful. If you are able to climb steps, that's another good way to get exercise on a tight schedule. When I lived in Center City Philadelphia, I was able to walk to/from work every day; don't know if that's possible for you.

Hi HEATHERREIF! The WATP videos are as brief as 15 minutes. She has DVD's that contain 1, 2, and 3 mile walks - some even have more. You chose the one you want to do depending on the time you have. She is a bit chatty but she is so warm and likeable too. Most larger bookstores have her DVD's and I've even seen them at Wal-Mart. Enjoy!

I have had great sucess with my Walk Away the Pounds video. I am currently walking/working out 2 miles of the 3 mile super fat burner video before I get ready for work in the morning. I have to get up earlier than I would like to, but if I get up and get it done, then I don't have to think about exercising the rest of the day and can do what I need to in the evenings without stressing. I have been doing this (getting up early) for about 2.5 weeks at this point. I was also suggested by my friends at work to reward my behavior (i.e. the exercising) rather than the results (weight loss) so that it would motivate me more to do the behavior. I have set a goal myself of exercising (and tracking it) for 18 days in November and if I meet that goal, I'm going to make a change to my hair color at the salon in December.

Hey everyone! I need some help. I have absolutlely no time to get to the gym, by the time I get home from work I have three kids and a hubby to spend time with. It is also dark by the time I get home. I am looking into exercise machines and or videos...anyone have any stories or products they could tell me about?? I really need to get on this routine before the holidays take ahold of me! Thanks in advance!
On World Vegetarian Day, most people aren't willing to trade in their turkey for tofurkey. Luckily, you can still reap the benefits of vegetarianism by trying flexitarianism on for size.
Chef Meg moves strawberries from the dessert course to the salad course. Fresh and juicy during spring and summer months, strawberries are delicious when combined with tender spinach and crunchy toasted almonds. This dish was inspired by a member-submitted recipe. She reduced the amount of sweetener used and then increased the vegetables to ensure you'd get a full cup of fruit and vegetables. TIP: Instead of slicing strawberries for the salad, quarter them. Quartered strawberries are easier to pick up with a fork!
