Went to bed last night with it snowing. Woke up to rain. It got to the high 30's, and it turned into a mud pit which will of course freeze and then snow tonight. I don't even want to get up in the morning to see what challenges await me. Tonight I had a grilled turkey burger, a baked 3oz potato, and some melon. Nell this time it sounds like your weather is worse than mine. Stay warm. Also looking forward to the report on Giada's restaurant. Barbara the chicken dish sounds great. Rita how has this winter treated you?

We are awaiting major snow overnight and tomorrow as Storm Thor hits. The next two days will be highs in the 20s, lows about 5. And about 10" of snow.

Tonight I made radiatore with basil, spinach and ricotta. One of my faves.

Been chilly here--relatively speaking, since the high was 59.

I'm making the chicken braised with onions, garlic, lemon and greek olives for dinner. I have made it twice before and love it. My son and his girlfriend are coming for dinner, so I made a chocolate cake, too.

We are expecting a major snow on Thursday, and temps below freezing both Thurs and Fri. We are expecting to break more cold records those days. We have already broken many records for cold this year. The Polar Bears could come here to live happily. I don't think I've ever been so ready for spring. The Park Service just announced that they aren't expecting peak cherry blossoms until mid April, very late this year.

Tonite we ate at Cracker Barrel, the one meal a month I eat out.

Well today felt like a long day. On the up side, I got a lot done. On the down side I discovered a number of potential problems that I need to deal with. Tonight I am making an open-faced brisket sandwich with a melon salad. I have the brisket left from Saturday night. Nell I think we are on the same weather path. We have the same forecast. I agree on the ice issues. That is much worse than the snow. It is also getting nasty as the snow gets dirtier every day.

We'll be getting more ice tomorrow, then more snow on Thursday. It's the sleet and freezing rain that really kills me. There is nothing you can do. If you try to treat with salt, it just washes away and ices over. I did my grocery shopping today so I'm good until Friday. I can't even imagine what you are going through up in New England, Sophie.

Tonight I made Kofta Curried Meatballs in yogurt sauce. One of the wonderful things about being on maintenance is that I can use full fat yogurt in cooking. The fat keeps it from breaking in heat.

OK a cold day with another 8 inches of snow. They say we will get more on Wednesday starting with rain which means ice and snow. Enough! Tonight I had a meeting so grilled another piece of the flank steak with roasted new potatoes and some leftover waldorf salad. Rita great to see you back.

We just got the southern edge of the storm, just ice pellets that make walking difficult. I see you have another storm coming in a couple of days, Sophie.

DH left early to beat the next storm. They are saying another 6 to 8 inches of snow. It has gotten very grey. I am beginning to think winter will never end. I have a flank steak marinating for dinner to have with a small baked potato and leftover Waldorf salad.

I am back on the island. The Spanish cooking class was great. Then I went to several places to pick up some more unusual ingredients. Met DH at ferry to come back. We don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent. So last night I made cod stuffed with crab, shrimp, and bay scallop stuffing topped with a light orange sauce that I got at the cooking class. I served it with cous cous cooked in Orange juice and Brussel sprout chiffanode cooked with a little butter and cumin. Today I am going to make a barbecued brisket in the slow cooker and serve as an open faced sandwich with a blue cheese Waldorf salad. The sun has been out for two days in a row. It has definitely improved my mood.

hi all,

Stopping by to say hi.....I can't complain about how cold it is because I live in Florida....but the wind.....with as much of that we have had I wish I had a windmill to make my power with.

If you go Panera to eat....remember that (or at least here) they feed the homeless. I do like some of the soups they have. I had never been in the restaurant itself till this week. I work with the one here thru my bakery feeding the homeless. during most of the year we feed 80+ families a day but its cold and holidays it can go up to as many as 250 a day. It can be a challenge at times but I will say thank goodness restaurant reject boxes of food, be it miss orders and such. We can get protiens to cook and feed them some nice meals. Smiles I do the dessert part lol..

I have a problem with food pantries giving homeless 10-20lbs of meat and dried beans I haven't figured out how to plug a freezer or slow cooker into a tree yet.

ok enough of my rant.

my honey made dinner tonight we had eggs, grits, and little breakfast stks. it was delish

everyone have a warm day and a happy day

Well I am on the mainland, and dealing with the snow debris. I am taking a Spanish Cooking Class tomorrow, having a meeting with the Health Department, and then getting groceries and going back. We are having grilled margarita pizza for dinner and doing Boyhood on demand.

Nell and Barbara I don't want to short servers. I really like when they are paid a living wage and don't accept tips. However I don't buy food I don't like, so I have something before I go and order a very small item or a beverage.

I never feel guilty about not ordering food. Many times I have eaten out and just had coffee when everyone eats. My bill is lower, but I do tip as if it were a higher amount. I have long since stopped caring about what other people think about what I eat. If they ask I'll say I already ate, or I had a big breakfast or lunch. They aren't the ones paying my bills or stepping on my scale in the morning.

Starbuck's cafes aren't large enough to accommodate even moderately sized groups.

I have my trivia group tonight. Another case of eating food because I feel guilty when I don't order anything! I have two things that I go between. I've tried several different sandwiches, etc. The food is not bad-bad, but just not good.

I have a book group which meets at a Panera once a month. None of us likes the food--in fact, more than half the group doesn't even get food at all--but they just leave us alone and don't seem to care. Everything I have ever had at Panera (in different locations) was disappointing, and, as said before, expensive for what it is.

Another really cold day here, but at least. The sun was shining and not much wind. Tonight I am having some leftover Vietnamese chicken curry over jasmine rice. One of the physicians is taking us all out to dinner tomorrow night, and then Thursay I am going to the mainland for a Friday Spanish Cooking class, and then a business meeting. Panera is probably better than other choices, but way too expensive for what it is.

Tonight I made noodles and sausage in a cottage cheese, egg and poppyseed custard. I so love the feeling of my kitchen when dinner is done and everything is cleaned. I have brushed my teeth and am finished with eating for the day.

It is so cold today. They just announced the average low at night was eight degrees. We have also set a record for number of days in a month that were zero or lower. Not an incentive to go for a nice long walk. Tonight I am having some leftover casserole of ground beef tomatoes, noodles, and Greek yogurt. I also want to plan my meals for next week and do the grocery list for DH to pick up. At least living on an Island forces me to be more organized. The groceries are really expense, in large part because of the cost of the cost of the freight.

Barbara temperature is all relative. If I were to move to Warm climate I would be miserable. I never even dream of air conditioning. Our summers are so cool I don't even use a fan.

Pasta and pork sound good at any time!

I made my chicken with onions, lemon and Greek olives last night, so I am set for a few days. The aroma in the house was amazing. Unfortunately, I also made some biscuits which are too delicious for my own good!!

As for the heat--well, it is for the bills, since I am on a very restricted budget and I have to be careful anyplace I have control, but also because when I am cold, it is still in the high 60's and I feel a little silly, when everyone on the other coast is having 0 degree weather!

Nell your pork and pepper spaghetti sounds really interesting. Nell to answer your question, last February I signed a two year extension to my contract. I kind of have a love hate relationship with the Island. For sure we cannot afford to retire here. Housing costs are off the charts. My apartment is only a few hundred dollars less than our mortgage for our three bedroom condo, and the apartment is tiny.

Barbara I agree with Nell. I turned my heat down when I left, and the first thing I did when I got home was run the heat up.

Stopped on my way to the ferry this afternoon and had 6 oysters on the half shell and a half order of linguine with clam sauce at a place we visit from time to time, and they always remember us. I am still tasting garlic. Then got the ferry. The parking lot was a slushy swamp. I just hope I can get out on Thurday when I leave again. I am afraid my car will be frozen in the mud pit. I do have kitty litter and a shovel in my trunk.

We had a little rain today, so it is dreary and cold (for us). I am feeling guilty about having the heat running but it is that rawness that makes the cold worse.

Sophie, having lived through this winter, will you extend your contract? Or have you served your time?

I was supposed to go to my son and granddaughter's joint birthday party yesterday, but there was no way I could get out. The cookies went to the plow guys, and we ate some of the deviled eggs for dinner last night, I dinner I hadn't planned on having here. The rest went down the disposal. A loss of good food, but better than the storms where we lost power for a week and had to throw everything out from two refrigerator freezers.

It's 36 now, positively balmy. The deep freeze returns tomorrow, though. Global warming, indeed!

I am so tired of snow. I've had snow every day except one this week. Thursday and Friday were bitterly cold and windy. It took my breath away. I have been in a really bad mood of late, and I suspect it is weather related, and being house bound. Came to the mainland Friday and hope I can get back as its snowing relatively heavy and has been since six this morning. We went to the symphony last night, and when we came out it was raining. Then we woke up to snow. I have made a few things that I can reheat for lunch or dinner because I don't feel like doing much cooking when I get home from work.

Matt, I'm with Nell. Cooking is fun and relaxing. And having go-to recipes doesn't mean it has to be boring. You really owe it to yourself to try to incorporate greens into your diet. I was never a vegetable eater and now I love them.

Sophie, I saw your storm moving in, and there is another one on the way Tues-Wed. We may get that one. I don't even want to leave the house, but I have to get to Walmart to pick up a prescription for my mother.

Matt, look at cooking as an adventure. It's a lot easier to make good choices when you sit down with a cookbook and a cup of coffee than it is to sit down in a restaurant and look at a menu. I have about 50 go-to recipes by now. My hubby won't eat chicken or fish in any form, and my son is allergic to tree nuts, mango, avocado, and the list goes on. I weigh and measure ingredients as they go into the dish, though. I love pasta, but 3/4 oz dry is one serving, and I weigh it out accordingly. Bread is 1 oz per serving, except for muffins or biscuits which is 3/4 oz. I discovered all the different Mexican dried chilis and how to cook with them, all the weird Asian vegetables and Indian spices. I had to learn to be creative, and it's been quite the adventure.

Well storm Neptune is on its way. They have already cancelled church for tomorrow. I was doing the coffee hour so now my Saturday baking day is going to plan B. I am going to make a small ginger bread cake for us. I can cut it into squares and freeze the leftovers. It is a new recipe that uses crystallized ginger and fresh ginger as well as ground ginger. Last night I made Armangac chicken with vegetables. Leftovers for lunch today. Hope everyone has a great Valentine's Day.

I have a confession to make....I lied by joining this group.

I don't love to cook. I use to love to cook and I need to find that mojo again.

For close to 20 years I did the majority of the cooking. During the past year, I had a job where I came home a few hours after my wife, so it fell on her to prepare and cook dinner. Let's make no mistake...she has never liked to cook.

I started a new job last this month, so we are starting to get back into a better schedule. But I find that cooking is just a chore. Our biggest problem is that we are just bored of eating, so we end up getting into a "meal" rut by eating the same things which also makes it easier to make bad choices.

One of the biggest obstacles is me. I am a picky eater, I won't eat greens, and so many of the "healthy" meals just gross me out. I like meat (beef, pork, chicken), but I love breads and pasta, which is probably the reason I look like I do...

Well, now that I have admitted that, I can start invoking change and get back into it.

Have a great week,

Matt

This is not going to be a great 3 day weekend, with the cold and wind chills the coldest of the year. At least it won't be like the Washington Birthday Storm of 1979, which buried DC. I was really sick during that storm and couldn't get to a doctor or a hospital, and couldn't even get medication. No stores were open.

In going through the miscellaneous recipes I have cut out of magazines and the paper over the last 4 or 5 years, I found a few to try. I did one last weekend--chicken in sauerkraut, which was pretty good. My next one is going to be a ground beef and rice dish which I am making tomorrow night.

It has been snowing all day, but it has warmed up to 35,and it's not sticking. It is actually pretty. The bad storm is supposed to hit Saturday. I ended up having roasted potatoes with the steak last night. I had gotten some spices from Penzeys and one was called a Chicago rub. I liked it. Tonight I had planned to have pasta, but may get something else to cook. I am just glad the weekend is fast approaching.

I think you have yet another storm coming over the weekend, Sophie. Did you read how some wacko "geoengineers" want to seed the atmosphere to reflect more sunlight away from earth to slow global warming? Warming?? We've had the two coldest winters ever. I look forward to warmth.

OK now they are saying more snow tomorrow. It is time for this to end. Last night I had vegetarian chile over half a baked sweet potato. Tonight I am. Going to grill a 4oz flank steak. Not sure what else I'll have with it.
