We're having a major shellfish shortage around here. The Chesapeake is frozen, so shellfish can't be harvested until the ice gives way.

I am back on the island. The Spanish cooking class was great. Then I went to several places to pick up some more unusual ingredients. Met DH at ferry to come back. We don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent. So last night I made cod stuued with crab, shrimp, and bay scallop stuffing topped with a light orange sauce that I got at the cooking class. I served it with cous cous cooked in Orange juice and Brussel sprout chiffanode cooked with a little butter and cumin. Today I am going to make a barbecued brisket in the slow cooker and serve as an open faced sandwich with a blue cheese Waldorf salad. The sun has been out for two days in a row. It has definitely improved my mood.

hi all,

Stopping by to say hi.....I can't complain about how cold it is because I live in Florida....but the wind.....with as much of that we have had I wish I had a windmill to make my power with.

If you go Panera to eat....remember that (or at least here) they feed the homeless. I do like some of the soups they have. I had never been in the restaurant itself till this week. I work with the one here thru my bakery feeding the homeless. during most of the year we feed 80+ families a day but its cold and holidays it can go up to as many as 250 a day. It can be a challenge at times but I will say thank goodness restaurant reject boxes of food, be it miss orders and such. We can get protiens to cook and feed them some nice meals. Smiles I do the dessert part lol..

I have a problem with food pantries giving homeless 10-20lbs of meat and dried beans I haven't figured out how to plug a freezer or slow cooker into a tree yet.

ok enough of my rant.

my honey made dinner tonight we had eggs, grits, and little breakfast stks. it was delish

everyone have a warm day and a happy day

Well I am on the mainland, and dealing with the snow debris. I am taking a Spanish Cooking Class tomorrow, having a meeting with the Health Department, and then getting groceries and going back. We are having grilled margarita pizza for dinner and doing Boyhood on demand.

Nell and Barbara I don't want to short servers. I really like when they are paid a living wage and don't accept tips. However I don't buy food I don't like, so I have something before I go and order a very small item or a beverage.

I never feel guilty about not ordering food. Many times I have eaten out and just had coffee when everyone eats. My bill is lower, but I do tip as if it were a higher amount. I have long since stopped caring about what other people think about what I eat. If they ask I'll say I already ate, or I had a big breakfast or lunch. They aren't the ones paying my bills or stepping on my scale in the morning.

Starbuck's cafes aren't large enough to accommodate even moderately sized groups.

I have my trivia group tonight. Another case of eating food because I feel guilty when I don't order anything! I have two things that I go between. I've tried several different sandwiches, etc. The food is not bad-bad, but just not good.

Barbara, can your book group meet at Starbucks? The coffee's better than at Panera.

Sophie, is it just snow this time, without the wind?

I had shrimp tonite. I keep the meatless Wednesdays and Fridays during Lent.

Another cold day, snow this morning, more forecast for tomorrow. Tonight one of the doctors who has been helping us took us all out to dinner. The food was wonderful and the conversation fun. It was truly a wonderful mid week. Tomorrow I am headed to the mainland.

I have a book group which meets at a Panera once a month. None of us likes the food--in fact, more than half the group doesn't even get food at all--but they just leave us alone and don't seem to care. Everything I have ever had at Panera (in different locations) was disappointing, and, as said before, expensive for what it is.

Another really cold day here, but at least. The sun was shining and not much wind. Tonight I am having some leftover Vietnamese chicken curry over jasmine rice. One of the physicians is taking us all out to dinner tomorrow night, and then Thursay I am going to the mainland for a Friday Spanish Cooking class, and then a business meeting. I'll get some groceries and come back with DH and the dog on Friday evening.

Panera is probably better than other choices, but way too expensive for what it is.

Tonight I made noodles and sausage in a cottage cheese, egg and poppyseed custard. I so love the feeling of my kitchen when dinner is done and everything is cleaned. I have brushed my teeth and am finished with eating for the day.

It is so cold today. They just announced the average low at night was eight degrees. We have also set a record for number of days in a month that were zero or lower. Not an incentive to go for a nice long walk. Tonight I am having some leftover casserole of ground beef tomatoes, noodles, and Greek yogurt. I also want to plan my meals for next week and do the grocery list for DH to pick up. At least living on an Island forces me to be more organized. The groceries are really expense, in large part because of the cost of the cost of the freight.

Barbara temperature is all relative. If I were to move to Warm climate I would be miserable. I never even dream of air conditioning. Our summers are so cool I don't even use a fan.

Pasta and pork sound good at any time!

I made my chicken with onions, lemon and Greek olives last night, so I am set for a few days. The aroma in the house was amazing. Unfortunately, I also made some biscuits which are too delicious for my own good!!

As for the heat--well, it is for the bills, since I am on a very restricted budget and I have to be careful anyplace I have control, but also because when I am cold, it is still in the high 60's and I feel a little silly, when everyone on the other coast is having 0 degree weather!

Nell your pork and pepper spaghetti sounds really interesting. Nell to answer your question, last February I signed a two year extension to my contract. I kind of have a love hate relationship with the Island. For sure we cannot afford to retire here. Housing costs are off the charts. My apartment is only a few hundred dollars less than our mortgage for our three bedroom condo, and the apartment is tiny.

Barbara I agree with Nell. I turned my heat down when I left, and the first thing I did when I got home was run the heat up.

Stopped on my way to the ferry this afternoon and had 6 oysters on the half shell and a half order of linguine with clam sauce at a place we visit from time to time, and they always remember us. I am still tasting garlic. Then got the ferry. The parking lot was a slushy swamp. I just hope I can get out on Thurday when I leave again. I am afraid my car will be frozen in the mud pit. I do have kitty litter and a shovel in my trunk.

Sophie, having lived through this winter, will you extend your contract? Or have you served your time?

I was supposed to go to my son and granddaughter's joint birthday party yesterday, but there was no way I could get out. The cookies went to the plow guys, and we ate some of the deviled eggs for dinner last night, I dinner I hadn't planned on having here. The rest went down the disposal. A loss of good food, but better than the storms where we lost power for a week and had to throw everything out from two refrigerator freezers.

It's 36 now, positively balmy. The deep freeze returns tomorrow, though. Global warming, indeed!

I am so tired of snow. I've had snow every day except one this week. Thursday and Friday were bitterly cold and windy. It took my breath away. I have been in a really bad mood of late, and I suspect it is weather related, and being house bound. Came to the mainland Friday and hope I can get back as its snowing relatively heavy and has been since six this morning. We went to the symphony last night, and when we came out it was raining. Then we woke up to snow. I have made a few things that I can reheat for lunch or dinner because I don't feel like doing much cooking when I get home from work.

Matt, I'm with Nell. Cooking is fun and relaxing. And having go-to recipes doesn't mean it has to be boring. You really owe it to yourself to try to incorporate greens into your diet. I was never a vegetable eater and now I love them.

Sophie, I saw your storm moving in, and there is another one on the way Tues-Wed. We may get that one. I don't even want to leave the house, but I have to get to Walmart to pick up a prescription for my mother.

Matt, look at cooking as an adventure. It's a lot easier to make good choices when you sit down with a cookbook and a cup of coffee than it is to sit down in a restaurant and look at a menu. I have about 50 go-to recipes by now. My hubby won't eat chicken or fish in any form, and my son is allergic to tree nuts, mango, avocado, and the list goes on. I weigh and measure ingredients as they go into the dish, though. I love pasta, but 3/4 oz dry is one serving, and I weigh it out accordingly. Bread is 1 oz per serving, except for muffins or biscuits which is 3/4 oz. I discovered all the different Mexican dried chilis and how to cook with them, all the weird Asian vegetables and Indian spices. I had to learn to be creative, and it's been quite the adventure.

Well storm Neptune is on its way. They have already cancelled church for tomorrow. I was doing the coffee hour so now my Saturday baking day is going to plan B. I am going to make a small ginger bread cake for us. I can cut it into squares and freeze the leftovers. It is a new recipe that uses crystallized ginger and fresh ginger as well as ground ginger. Last night I made Armangac chicken with vegetables. Leftovers for lunch today. Hope everyone has a great Valentine's Day.

I have a confession to make....I lied by joining this group.

I don't love to cook. I use to love to cook and I need to find that mojo again.

For close to 20 years I did the majority of the cooking. During the past year, I had a job where I came home a few hours after my wife, so it fell on her to prepare and cook dinner. Let's make no mistake...she has never liked to cook.

I started a new job last this month, so we are starting to get back into a better schedule. But I find that cooking is just a chore. Our biggest problem is that we are just bored of eating, so we end up getting into a "meal" rut by eating the same things which also makes it easier to make bad choices.

One of the biggest obstacles is me. I am a picky eater, I won't eat greens, and so many of the "healthy" meals just gross me out. I like meat (beef, pork, chicken), but I love breads and pasta, which is probably the reason I look like I do...

Well, now that I have admitted that, I can start invoking change and get back into it.

Have a great week,

Matt

This is not going to be a great 3 day weekend, with the cold and wind chills the coldest of the year. At least it won't be like the Washington Birthday Storm of 1979, which buried DC. I was really sick during that storm and couldn't get to a doctor or a hospital, and couldn't even get medication. No stores were open.

In going through the miscellaneous recipes I have cut out of magazines and the paper over the last 4 or 5 years, I found a few to try. I did one last weekend--chicken in sauerkraut, which was pretty good. My next one is going to be a ground beef and rice dish which I am making tomorrow night.

It has been snowing all day, but it has warmed up to 35,and it's not sticking. It is actually pretty. The bad storm is supposed to hit Saturday. I ended up having roasted potatoes with the steak last night. I had gotten some spices from Penzeys and one was called a Chicago rub. I liked it. Tonight I had planned to have pasta, but may get something else to cook. I am just glad the weekend is fast approaching.

I have a really bad condo meeting tonite so won't be eating dinner. I get so upset by contentiousness that I get sick if there is anything in my stomach.

I think you have yet another storm coming over the weekend, Sophie. Did you read how some wacko "geoengineers" want to seed the atmosphere to reflect more sunlight away from earth to slow global warming? Warming?? We've had the two coldest winters ever. I look forward to warmth.

OK now they are saying more snow tomorrow. It is time for this to end. Last night I had vegetarian chile over half a baked sweet potato. Tonight I am. Going to grill a 4oz flank steak. Not sure what else I'll have with it.

I am sipping coffee, waiting for the next storm before starting a stock for the seafood dish I preparing for dinner. I am sure many things that are important to me will be discarded by my children. Hopefully I won't have to see it.

I have a little glass pill bottle from 1963, the kind prescription pills came in back then. Our family went on a cross country camping trip that year, and my sister and I put some Pacific Ocean water in the little bottles. I still have that bottle. The water has long since gone, it's just an empty glass container with a plastic stopper now, but I can't get rid of it. Someday my kids will toss it without a thought, it brings back no memories for them. But its' small so not a storage issue, just an example of something bizarre that's hard to toss.

It is really cold today. They are saying more snow tomorrow. Tonight I am trying red wine and mushroom burgers with goat cheese served with melon salad. It is true about discarding things you have had forever. The things that are hardest for me are things that were my parents or grandparents.

It's hard to get rid of stuff. Too often the value isn't the item itself, but the fact that you've had it for so long. It can feel like throwing away your youth.

OK enough snow and cold. Still eating vegetable pot pie leftovers for lunch. Tonight leftover pasta sauce from Tuesday night with whole wheat linguine. Nell I think aging parents can present special problems, and now I am becoming one. We really need to sell our condo on the mainland, but figuring what to do with everything in it is overwhelming. Even if I go back to the mainland, we do not need all that space. It just keeps getting postponed. My husband has stuff he hasn't used in years he has skies, snow shoes, multiple back packs and multiple hiking boots he can't part with. Rita moving can be difficult, but it has its positives. I usually get rid of lots of things when I move. I also usually enjoy arranging things in a new setting. That said moving is not fun.

My MIL had lived in her house for 40 years when she broke her hip and had to go into assisted living. That's a house to one room. My parents had to move to a condo when Dad got cancer. That was big house to three rooms. In neither case were they able to do the job themselves, I had to do my MIL's move, and my brother, sister and I did our parents' move. It would have been easier if they had been renting because both times I had to deal with a real estate sale. I had to move Mom again into care from her condo after Dad died, and her dementia kept her from being able to help. Actually she was a hindrance. The move may be hard, but at least you are in control of what you keep and what you discard.

Sophie, you were very fortunate that you were allowed to stay. Some new owners prefer to have current tenants. They don't have to go looking for income that way.

Today it got warmer, and all the ice turned to mud. Tomorrow they are saying more snow. Tonight I am grilling a small piece of Flank steak and baking one half of a sweet potato topped with Greek Yogurt and peach salsa.

A number of years ago I was renting a wonderful apartment with water views, but was awakened one morning to an auctioneer in the driveway auctioning the building for bankruptcy. Fortunately the new owner let me stay. Your chile sounded good, and leftovers that can be frozen is a bonus.

Sophie, I actually put sweet potato in the chili. I was missing some of the ingredients for the stew so I improvised. I also put some kale in there. It was delicious and I have at least 4 more meals, probably 5.

Yes, that's one of the problems with renting. At least your landlord told you. All too many times back during the financial crisis, a landlord's rental unit would go into foreclosure, and the tenant wouldn't know about it until he came home from work and found a lock on the door. All their possessions then belonged to the bank.

It was really cod today. I had leftover vegetarian pot pie for lunch. Then I sautéed wild mushrooms, deglazed the pan with red wine, and added the leftover sauce without the sausage. Served it with whole wheat linguine. It was great. Nell glad to hear your Mother had no major eye problems. Barbara I love vegetarian chile, and also like it over a baked sweet potato. Rita stay warm.

We're heading out soon for our monthly motorcycle club dinner at Cracker Barrel.

I took Mom to the ophthalmologist and there is nothing wrong with her eye. Her brain disease causes her to feel pain for no reason. She lives in a continuing care community which is perfect for her. She has miles of halls to wander, and many eyes to watch. And she is happy there.

Is there anyone you can bring with you, to wrangle her while you park?

I think I am making vegetarian "chili" for dinner tonight. It's a recipe I found int he paper several years ago, and I really like it, but I haven't made it in quite a while. One of the best parts is that it makes enough for me to portion out and freeze for several quick lunches.

I'm off to go get Mom and bring her back to the doc. She is hard to deal with. She's on a walker so I have to drop her off at the door while I find a place to park and she wanders. I can put her inside on a seat, and she'll come out and wander around the parking lot looking for me.

I woke up to snow. By the time I left for work it was raining. Now it's snowing again. Had great time at the Super Bowl party. We left at half time and came home for the second half. Did not want to get up this morning. Made a vegetable pot pie for dinner tonight.

Sounds like you got back just in time, Sophie!

I just got back from a Ladies Church Tea. I didn't eat any of the little bites, or even drink the tea.

So I got off for the French cooking class and a haircut. Got back last night just in time. The storm coming has created cold temperatures and high winds. No boats or planes today. I made barbecued turkey burgers with cantaloupe salad last night. Tonight I'm making sausage and peppers and slaw made with yogurt dressing. Also will make some Asian chicken wings for a potluck Super Bowl party tomorrow.

I got off the Island and out of the lot. Going out for dinner, a new barbecue place in our neighborhood in Providence. Tomorrow is my cooking class and haircut. Then back to the Island. Should be a nice day. Rusty the new advertising sounds like it is working. Nell I am hoping New England will get a break for a change. Miss G glad you are back. Stay warm Rita.

Sophie I hope you can get out and get back. New Englanders are haven't a tough year this year.

Today is my hubby's 77th birthday. I made beef stroganoff for him, with a beef ribeye, real sour cream, and some exotic mushrooms from the Asian market. It was good but I couldn't eat much of something that fatty, but oh the fat was so good!

The storm is gone, but we are still shoveling out. More is expected Friday and again Monday. Hopefully not that much. Tonight I am having vegetarian chili. I am hoping to get off the island tomorrow to take a cooking class on French Comfort Food and get a haircut Friday. They say the lot on the other side, and I keep my good car there. So here's hoping I can get out.

We've had internet for about 20 years and life can't be normal without it anymore. I just saw an old Today Show segment with Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel from 1994 when they were asking what an internet is.

I made linguini with peanut sauce tonite. Filling and spicy and yummy. Now to clean it up.

All of Rhode Island is as well. Unless you have a badge from a hospital and are going to work you are not allowed to drive. They will not decide until 10 tonight if they will extend it or end it. It is still snowing but definitely winding down. I am staying home, staying warm and not doing much.

NYC is in total shut down. A bold move by the mayor but very likely a smart one.

It has been a busy day. I spent the day communicating with ths state health department on preparations for the island. That was followed by a meeting with all departments from the Town talking about who would be doing what pre during and post storm. The boats stopped running this morning, and the planes about 10. Then. I did paper work assessing our facility and generator before the storm arrives. I expect at some point I will lose power at my apartment. They are saying anyone on the roads after 8pm will be stopped. The wind all ready strong. I was here with Sandy. It was not too bad. There several areas where the roads were damaged, but it was warmer and the days were longer so there was more light. The power was only out a day. I am having leftover Mexican for dinner with melon salad and settling in to wait out the storm. I wish DH were here, but he works on the mainland.

Sophie, how is the island preparing for a snowstorm with hurricane force winds and a storm surge? Were you on the island during Sandy?
